I mean him, she earned a lot of money from her other job so should have really done it for free as she obviously enjoyed making stuff like that, the audacity of that woman!

I had a 3rd shift job with a lot of down time.I would crochet to help stay awake. I was crocheting Care Bears that took 2 different kind of yarns plus stuffing. Co-workers would put in orders and paid, boss comes in said she wanted one. I told her the price and she said I have to pay? Co-workers would say they wanted a blanket, I had them pick it out from a book that gave the amount of yarn needed and said you buy the yarn, I make it for $10 on my time line. Most couldn't believe how much yarn cost. Now I sew a lot at home and you wouldn't believe the cost of fabric. If you get a home-made gift you're special, it's cheaper to buy ready-made.

My best choosing beggar story happened fairly recently. I got approved for a loan to buy my first home, and my younger sister is essentially couch hopping between friends, as she could not afford rent and all of our family lived too far away from her dental school. So, I offered her a room in my new house and only asked that she help with some of the utilities that would increase with more people in the house. She was ecstatic at first.
The place needs a bit of TLC, mostly just a fresh coat of paint and removal of some crappily applied wallpaper, some stain for the wooden ceiling, and other small things, which honestly wasn't bad because it gives me a great excuse to repaint every room whatever colors I desire, as well as the ceilings. And, as someone who's rented apartments that have only had a view of the blank side of another building for half a decade, I'm super excited that the main bedroom had windows overlooking the river that runs behind the house.
Well, My younger sister insisted that I didn't have the aesthetic prowess to pick the paint colors or the decorations and that she should pick them all, and on top of that, she said the main bedroom would be her room. Note, She didn't ask about any of this, she just strongly asserted that was how it was going to be. Example: "I'm doing the kitchen in an apple theme, and all the furniture will be rustic, like Mawmaw's barn aesthetic." etc.
Obviously, I laughed in her face because how could she be serious? But she was 100% dead serious.
When I told her no, she asserted that I would pick crazy paint colors and had no idea what I was doing when it came to picking paint colours that went well together(she is the only one out of all the siblings who isn't an artist, and we work almost exclusively with paint. So the idea that she would somehow know more about color theory than I would is absurd.
And then she proceeded to whine about how she always had a small bedroom growing up, and her one apartment only had a view of the hillside, so she should get the biggest room with the best view instead of having her choice between the two other bedrooms that were still twice the size or more of her room growing up.
She got mad and told me she didn't want to live with me anymore, to forget the $2k she was going to give me for closing costs. She never said anything about $2k. The only time we discussed money at all, she said she could probably give me $300 for closing costs if I needed it, but I had already negotiated for the seller to pay my closing costs at that point and told her it probably wouldn't be necessary.
I was confused and just said "Umm, okay then, well I guess good luck being homeless and all." To which she said "Yeah, well have fun renting for the rest of your life." Then hung up on me.
I was completely confused because not only had she been a choosing beggar, but she had made up an alternate reality where she was paying almost half my closing costs and without her, I wouldn't be able to get the loan. Which wasn't true in the slightest, as I didn't need her help at all to get the loan and was getting the house regardless of whether or not she wanted to stay there rent free.
Sent me a text too saying "That's the last time I ever do you a favour!" Then blocked me. I'm still completely dumbfounded as to how she thought that she was doing me a favor by living in my house rent free, or how she thought I was going to sign a purchase agreement knowing I was short 2 grand and having no idea where it was going to come from, as she never mentioned giving me anything more than $300, and even then I told her I probably wouldn't need it... and I didn't.
Since then, she's randomly texted me to say she's changed her mind, then at the drop of a hat, she's angrily telling me that she's not going to live with me and that she won't help me out, trying desperately to dangle her mooching over my head like I can't live without her in my house, though I've been renting on own for over 5 years and paying over $250 more in rent than I'll be paying in mortgage. So I had to block her because I was sick of her trying to use her imaginary leverage in attempts to, idk, hurt my feelings or something? I still have no idea. I mean, it does hurt my feelings that she's homeless, but I literally can't do anything about that if she won't accept my help, so it's a lost cause. You can bring a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.

You can't help someone who doesn't want help. You shouldn't beat yourself up over it. I am a long time crocheter (code for I am old - lol) and have had my fill of friends of friends asking me to make stuff for them on the cheap because "you like to do it". And I say yes I believe there are a lot of doctors and lawyers who "like" their work too but they don't do it for free. After years of looking for the perfect come-back for these entitled people I finally came up with the following: "Sure, I can make that blanket (scarf, sweater etc.) for you - I'm estimating that it will be $70 in yarn and 40 hours to make, so let me know when you would like to start your 40 hours of housework for me and I'll happily thrown in the yarn!". Trust me they go away quickly - and I no longer get upset. Works every time! Just saying. lol.

I'm currently not able to get a job due to health issues, meaning that I'm basically always broke. Aside from the point that I would never even dare to ask someone to make my stuff for free, if someone would notice that I would really like to get something they made but can't pay for and earnestly offered me that deal I would probably start crying out of gratitude. I'd happily do all the dishes, vacuuming, wiping the floors, dusting, take out the trash, clean the litter box, walk the dog, wash the car or whatever else needs doing for them.

What is wrong is when someone lies & uses a pity story to get something for free or discount. It's the lying that's wrong. And, now because a few dishonest people lied, a lot of good people will be less likely to give in the future.

The first Christmas that I was a single mother with 4 kids...I was terrified. The one thing that their Dad did was Christmas, and he was unavailable.. Santa was still real, and they were full of hope, I was so poor...I actually worried myself down to 82 lbs...I didn’t tell anyone how I was feeling, I was scared. A man I’d never met turned up at the door with a Christmas Tree. Another lady arrived late one evening with her mother, and clothes baskets of gifts that people had donated..some were pre-loved, but in great condition...people had even given things that matched my children’s separate interests..I was so grateful, and in some disbelief. There was one thing tho that I knew Santa couldn’t bring, and that was the bike that my daughter kept talking about. We attended a children’s Christmas Party at my Father’s work and there was a raffle, and Dad brought a ticket for each of the children. I didn’t know until driving home, ( and neither did my daughter) that she had won 2nd prize....and it was a bike. So, Santa delivered. And I cried. For all the awful people in the world, there are such good ones...and, for these reasons, despite all the hardships and setbacks that have been handed me in this life, I’ve never lost my faith. Peace to you.

My 90yo mother still does quilting. Neighbor of mine saw one of her quilts in my home. Asked me if my mother could " whip one out" by the weekend for her to bring as a gift for a friend. Told her it takes about 6 months( hand stitched) and cost about $300 just in fabric, batting etc. Neighbor stormed out. Thought I was lieing to her. No loss lol.
