Earth shattering sounds from this 1972 McLaren M8F at the 2020 Oulton Park Gold cup!
Powered by a 800bhp 8.8 litre aluminium Chevrolet V8 engine and liveried in the traditional McLaren Papaya Orange, this is one of the highlights of my entire 2020 racing season!
Thanks for watching!

I was 15 when I watched Team McLaren at Laguna Seca. The Can-Am cars were so technically advanced and fast and LOUD! They literally shook the ground and your chest with Chevy thunder. It gave me goosebumps, my eyes watered, my hair stood on end - it was electric. No mufflers and you got close to the track. Just a 4 foot high wire fence, no double fences, no restricted areas, no tents and banners blocking the view. Back then you felt like you were part of the race, like the track and the racing was for you.
I was at Laguna Seca also and saw these. You are exactly right. To me it was the sound of rolling thunder. You feel the sound.
1:29 ….. the acceleration for its time period is just out right insane.
Pure American muscle right there. I love these Can Am cars.
It's a McLaren...
@@retrospace2150 Really? Thanks genius....with American Muscle. 😎
They use Chevy v8’s,probably why he said American muscle
@@hihi8977 That's exactly why....😎
Kiwi engineering with an American heart. The ultimate combo.
Thank you for NOT spoiling this with unnecessary background music. The V8 is quite adequate in that respect!
I'll never put music over my track action and that's a promise!
I can't stand when the ruin the engine sounds with music! 😖
Not sure who was driving this today, Maybe a JCB boy. Didn’t look like Andy Newall’s Helmet he normally drives it and it was close to 900hp with 850lbs torque when I used to work on it with Andy. It is a fantastically built car, My favorite of the cars we worked on. When it starts you need ear defenders or risk a burst eardrum. Testing at Donington once. I accidentally switched HT leads and it was lapping on 6 cylinders faster than some F1’s from the 70”s on track that day. It is an incredibly quick car.
It was a guy called Dean Forward in the car that particular day of the video. Very quick driver in a insanely fast car! I'm hoping 2021 gives me the opportunity to see it out on track again.
It’s owned by us at CS panda in dewsbury and dean forward drives it for us
There’s not much today in sports car racing that has that kind of massive throaty v8 sound. A sound to trigger an earthquake.
Heard it at Goodwood FOS this year - you literally feel it in your chest as it accelerates off the start. Amazing car - bloody quick too.
Even today there’s NO BETTER SOUNDING CLASS of race car !!!! 👍
I would have goosebumps, just being overtaken by one of these amazing beasts. Nevermind driving one...........;)
I wonder what the specs of the motor were? Cam lift, compression, heads etc?
Nice video. The M8F is an animal!
Not just saying this for the sake of the video but it's truly one of the loudest, most badass cars I've ever had the pleasure of seeing on track!
MW Race & Rally it’s epic, especially on a small track like Oulton Park.
It's a tight and bumpy track for most cars never mind a Can Am beast like this! 😅
These McLaren M8f cars are the most beautiful race cars ever to go on a track. Their stunning performance of 50 plus years ago is a tribute to the engineering skills of Bruce McLaren. Nothing compares except possibly the Porsche 930 of the same era. Kiwi ingenuity at its best.
537 cubic inches? really?
Wow the torque. And the down shifts it nearly sucks the track up .great to watch cheers perth wa
The best race cars ever Can Am cars
Agree; very few rules make for great design and innovation.
Nothing better than the GROWL of a big V8! Not even a 15,000+ RPM V8, V10, or V12! Just imagine these cars with a good gearbox!
Wow this driver knows how to drive it. Need a lot of confidence to push it like that :)
1:29 for example ^^
Yeah Dean Forward is a brilliant driver, always on the limit and always spectacular!
Can Am cars are back at Oulton this year 2023 instead of the F5000 cars but I will take it!
Nice! Is this for the Gold Cup again?
@@MWRaceRally Yes! HSCC Thundersports championship Oulton Park Gold Cup 28th - 30th July. Already booked time off work I have attended every Gold Cup since 2012 love it!
We were there all weekend and was gutted that he broke the gearbox and couldn't race on Sunday or Monday. It would have been epic!
I did originally plan a much bigger video about this car but with the gearbox issues I had to just go with these shots from the Saturday.
Hopefully I get to see it up close in future and can get some different angles of it on track too.
@@MWRaceRally It's a good compilation, my phone camera just can't do the sound the justice it deserves. Hopefully next time we get to see a bit more of it.
Oh i wonderfull ca i know this vrom a frend in aachen
nice (toy) to have....if you can afford it....
Do you know who was driving this monster? He for sure knows how to handle this marvel. 😁
He's called Dean Forward and I agree, he really does know how to drive it! 😎
I saw these incredible cars race at Riverside Raceway in California, in the early '70's. It was such an immense thrill to view and hear those powerful machines accelerating, decelerating, gearing down. Denny Hulme won the race. Bruce McLaren, running second, broke right in front of where I was standing, spun off course and hit a flagman. I never found out what became of that flagman. The memories of that race are still fresh in my mind all these years later.
I bet it was quite a sight seeing these cars back in the day! I hope the Flagman was okay!
My next video is the March 717 Can Am so you may want to keep an eye out for it 👍
What a beast.👍
