  • Can-Am is possibly the best motorsport series of all time. Incredible lightweight cars with massive V8 engines. We've been lucky enough to have a lot of Can-Am cars at Goodwood at all three of our events. This year at the 81st Members' Meeting we will celebrate the whole history of Can-Am, and in advance, we wanted to look back at our favourite Goodwood Can-Am moments.
    Which is your favourite?

    I remember watching the orange McClarens (not sure the model) racing at a local airport track in 1968.
    The flames coming out of the exhaust when they backed off the throttle at the end of the straight was impressive to say the least.
    Watching them come down the straight was like watching an F-15 come at you at supersonic speed - no noise at all until they went past. Then BOOM!

    Love all these cars - Can Am may have been a bit one-sided in terms of which cars won in a season, but it was so spectacular. However… how did the Hepworth pass the regulatory requirements - I thought there needed to be room for a second seat?

    • @RespectableMayonnaise
      @RespectableMayonnaise Месяц назад +2

      After the original can-am / group 7 regulations died out in the early 70’s there was a second iteration of it which had some different regulations which allowed different styles including modified chassis from some formula series, so chances are the Hepworth is a modified F5000 chassis or similar that was allowed on those grounds

      I was lucky to see both series 1969 -1973 and 1977-1980 at Road America. When we evaluate series from the 60-80s, attention needs to be given as to just how unreliable these cars were! Great races on paper evaporated due to unreliablity. The 5.0L series produced much better and more competitive races. The cars were lithe looking too.

      @@Alexander_SnowdenAye, but mostly because it couldn't race in that configuration. Too enclosed meant it overheated massively so they opened it up & then stuck the massive wing on to gain some downforce as it wasn't any quicker in a straight line as had been intended.
      Works well enough after the reengineering nowadays tho for at least the short races and demo runs in full low profile form.
