I was fortunate enough to be at a Can Am race at Laguna Seca in 1977. There were several Mclaren M8's racing. Laguna Seca kind of sits in a valley and the echo of those big block Chevy engines was like rolling thunder sounds off the hill sides. Once in a lifetime experience I'll never forget.

I was there with my father (‘68,’69,70) we would wait to cross the track between races and sit under a certain oak tree in our collapsible lawn chairs by the cork screw ,fond memories!, I think by ‘77 ? the series had run its coarse after Porsche showed up with unlimited horse power and budget. My view of the track was from the pit area. I was a mechanic and tire changer for one of the Winston West grand national stock cars racing that day also. So, my view of the track was the cork screw down the hill, around the sharp left turn onto the front straight and under the bridge and a ways past that. The Porsches were there too, but didn't impress me even though they were faster. Could hear the McLarens seemed like halfway around the track. They had some bark.

I saw them race back in the '70's. There is no bigger thrill than watching and listening to these beasts come roaring past. The big Chevrolet V8's had incredible, breathtaking exhaust notes. And we could watch the drivers at work due to the open cockpits. We've lost so much by not hearing those sounds anymore, and seeing how exotic these beautiful cars were.
One race at Riverside, California, Denny Hulme won, Bruce McClaren was running second when he spun off the course and smashed right into the wall where I and hundreds others were standing. He wasn't injured but a flag man was hit right before McClaren hit the wall. I never heard if he survived.

I'd argue that you had equally great series all the way up to the early 2000's.
      70's grp 5.
      70's - 80's IMSA.
      70's - 80's Trans Am.
      80's - 90's DTM.
      80's Group B.
      80's - 90's group A rally.
      90's BTCC.
80's - 90's Aussie Touring Cars and Supercars.
The death of a racing series is when things get too strict and you stifle creativity, though there are some strict racing series today that are good (WRC and Aussie Supercars come to mind), but generally speaking it was all just more interesting when you'd see anything from a turbo 4 to a flat 12 on the starting grid and they were all decently competitive with eachother.

There is an AVS Mk.1 in California and I've sat in it. Between the insane driving position(you have to place both feet to the right sideways as the tunnel is to narrow to have your feet pointing straight)and the fact there is absolutely nothing except that wedge nose in front of you, you'd have to be mental to want to race one of these. And it ran in 10 Can-Am races! Don Nichols never had to drive the thing because had he, he would've scraped it from the start.

I always loved the way Can-Am Cars sounded. The best way I can describe the way they sound to me is they sounded 'Angry'. They had their own sound. No other Cars in Auto Racing sounded that way to me. They 'Rev' so fast, like there was absolutely 'No' parasitic drag on the Engine what so ever. Probably Aluminum Flywheels and the Crank Dampeners (if they even had them) helped with that. They seemed to rev from an idle to 8-9,000 rpm and back to idle again in the blink of an eye....
It made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end every time I'd hear them Rev them while they were sitting still.....lol.

The Toyota 7 Race Car's appearance in GT4 immediately came to mind seeing these. Apparently Toyota cancelled their entry to the series in '70 due to a fatal accident (and subsequent coverup attempt) during a test at Suzuka. They were toying with a twin turbo V8 variant at the time.

Sadly a series like Can-Am can’t really happen today. It was a huge learning experience, without the help of computers, they tried every wacky idea they could come up with. Towards the end, most of the cars looked like early LMP1 cars, which makes total sense, as that basic profile is still in use today.
