Fabulous song, but in the UK it was the first of a string of big hits. Inside Out was the final one in 1982. The current version of the group is based in the UK.
@@trickygoose2 While 1977's "Native New Yorker" was their only mainstream chart hit in the US, their subsequent releases were hits on the US R&B and dance charts, including this 1982 song.
@@spantle3888Great choices!! "Revival" is one of my all-time favorite songs by them. My road playlist has "Jessica," "Revival," and the Doobie Brothers' "Jesus Is Alright" consecutively. I've requested they respond to "Revival" many times. Gonna miss Dickey Betts. R.I.P. 🙏
In my humble opinion they were the funkiest band to come out of New York, absolutely loved they sound and they were definitely big in clubs over here in the UK.
They had more success in the UK than their native US. Between 1977 and 1982 they had 5 top ten hits. This song reached #3 in 1982. Their other hits were, "Native New Yorker" #5 in 1977, "Use It Up And Wear It Out" #1 in 1980, "Going Back To My Roots" #4 in 1981 and "If You're Looking For A Way Out" #6 in 1980. Loved dancing to Odyssey back then and still love the tunes today. Hope you check out these other tunes, they're all as great as this one. Much love ❤❤❤❤❤
Yes, they were never huge but they got a good amount of airplay in Europe. I love how diverse those years were, mainstream radio would play this and then some post punk band and then some synth pop.
Reminds me when I was in the hospital having a kidney operation in 1982, the hospital radio DJ came round to ack the patients what song they wanted played, I got this song played I loved it ❤
The bass guitarist is Steve Adams (RIP) who was also bassist for the noted Funk band Slave. I strongly suggest you check out some of Slave's music. They are from Dayton, Ohio, a city noted for its Funk musicians that came out of it: The Ohio Players, Bootsy & Catfish Collins (both of whom played for James Brown and P-Funk), the aforementioned Slave, as well as the legendary master of the Talkbox, Roger Troutman (RIP) and his band Zapp.
Great tune for your chair dancing! I live in the UK where there are still places where us oldies can go to relive our youth to these songs. If you have them in Oaklahoma then get a babysitter, have a date night and get yourself out there. 🕺
IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR A WAY OUT.. is the most mature love song EVER written. Subliminal. If you really love them...set them free. Odyssey were incredible.
I hadn't realised how much bass this song had until now! Amazing! For a more dancey Odyssey check out 'Use It Up and Wear It Out', and for their softer side, try 'If Youre Looking For A Way Out'.
I was so excited when I saw you were reacting to this amazing song. The backing track has so many wonderful elements which I'm surprised haven't been sampled yet in a mainstream track. The lead vocal contains a range of emotions including tenderness, longing, lust, warmth, and desperation; it's totally compelling.
Guys, if you or your parents ever watched the 70s TV show "Good Times", there's an episode where the daughter, Thelma performs a contemporary/lyrical dance to their big hit "Native New Yorker". I love that scene. It's from season 5, episode 24 "That's Entertainment, Evans Style".
Amber absolutely nailed this track. This was a couples dance groove, a little holding and touching while you twirled together, often played towards the end of the evening. ✌️
LOL, thinking of "Native New Yorker"-- "And, whoa, where did all those yesterdays go When you still believed Love could really be like a Broadway show? You were the star (you were the star), when did it close?"
Loved this group, Use It Up Where It Out…..Going Back To My Roots…..Native New Yorker……and one beautiful ballad…..If Your Looking For A Way Out……as disco was being shunned stateside they chose wisely to move their sound to UK and Europe and we loved them.
Love this at first listen. Has an easy-going early ‘80s groove with lots of disco strings. (And a little funk.). Her voice is so distinct! Totally reminds me of their hit, “Native New Yorker". (One of my fave disco songs ever.)
Hearing this for the first time in some years, I easily recognized the background music, the 🔥🔥🔥 signature sound of Steve Arrington and Slave, the punching groove with the funky slap bass! That means , yeah J and Amber, if y’all love this sound , you gotta get with some Slave- Snapshot, Watching You , Slide, Just A Touch Of Love, Wait For Me, Party Lites and more, get ready to jam! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎧🎧🎧
In the comments people have mentioned Steve Arrington, who produced this song. He had a great group called Slave, and the song I love is "Just A Touch of Love". HEAVY on the bass and Highly recommended!!
One of my favorite songs from the 80s. You can play it with Slave’s Watching You, they sound similar. Checkout Raw Silk’s Do It To The Music! Also Tom Browne’s Funkin For Jamaica. Can’t wait until they get to Raw Silk, Sharon Redd, France Joli and Atlantic Starr!
This was nice, but the really memorable Odyssey song from the disco era is "Native New Yorker". Other iconic stuff in the same vein include Randy Crawford and the Crusader's "Street Life", and of course a long list of hits from Hot Chocolate like "You Sexy Thing", "Everyone's a Winner", "So You Win Again" etc...

OMG I loved dancing to this band brings back such good memories out with the girls fri/sat nights. Good to hear this, it's been a while. You should check out their midtempo jam "Don't Tell Me Tell Her." This arrangement is almost identical to Slave's "Watching You," probably because the two group shared a bassist and a producer.
Yeah I remember playing this when I was a DJ when it came out. It worked well with tunes by The Jacksons 5, shalamar, stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, the ojs the Bee Gees and of course Donna Summer. There's probably many more but that was a little while ago:)
You could check out some Grace Jones from this era like I need a man, below the belt, do or die. Hi, you two! It's Andrew Erroch fae Paisley in Scotland here. Odyssey had some great disco songs and this isn't even the best of them. They had great success in the UK charts. I would suggest 'Back To My Roots' or the only No.1 they had in the UK, called 'Use It Up and Wear It Out'. Æx 🙏
Steve Arrington was the lead singer for Slave Mark Adams was the Bass player for Slave. That’s who was playing the bass. One of the best bass players to do it. Please do “Watching You” from Slave.
You've previously looked at Level 42 and commented on the Bass playing of Mark King ( who, by the way only took up the bass in Level 42 because he had to sell his drums and other members surpassed him at his original guitar playing role. Mark developed his bass style after witnessing America thumb slapping bass technique being used in funk and jazz funk. The Bass on Inside Out by Sandy Anderson really takes the sound up another level he is a truly great exponent of that style.
Native New Yorker was their big hit.
All I had to do was hear that beautiful voice and Native New Yorker hit me in the face. I love Native New Yorker!
Fabulous song, but in the UK it was the first of a string of big hits. Inside Out was the final one in 1982.

Odyssey - ‘ If you’re looking for a way out.’ Incredible song.
In my humble opinion they were the funkiest band to come out of New York, absolutely loved they sound and they were definitely big in clubs over here in the UK.
Another rollerskating jam. Very smooth, mellow but gets you on the dance floor skates or feet.

A few of those post-disco groups did better in the UK than the USA. Shalamar another, and George Benson's crossover period
Yes, they were never huge but they got a good amount of airplay in Europe. I love how diverse those years were, mainstream radio would play this and then some post punk band and then some synth pop.
Going Back To My Roots is my favourite. I know it’s a cover.
Disco was a bad word for a while in the very conservative US music scene. Remember "DIsco Sucks". So stupid.

(Samuel) Sandy Anderson on bass doing Mark Adams' "Watching You" bassline.
What a GREAT band! When you get back to them again can I suggest Native New Yorker as the next track? Love the reviews 😊👍

My absolute favourite song of theirs...... so nostalgic. I think they were very underated. ❤❤❤❤
Native New Yorker was a song I would sing at the top of my voice as a young girl. I still sing it loudly.
This beat sounds eerily similar to Slaves I've Been Watching You.. love this always have
This was such a fun period of my life. The dance clubs were so much fun! I love this song ❤
Oh yes, my wife and I loved dancing to this in the 80s. But the one by Odyssey that really got us dancing was Use It Up And Wear It Out.
Great song, great group! Great reaction! I read a comment the suggested “Native New Yorker”. I agree, another great song by Odyssey!
This and Back to my roots are absolute complete tunes
Early 80's post-Disco groove. RnB crossover - hello High School flashback. Full of technical ability and tons of layering.
A classic I love this song they also have a hit called "Native new Yorker" you should also check that song out, great reaction.
They did one of my favorite dance tunes, Use It Up and Wear It Out (1980).
Pat and Mick also did a great version in the 90s.
Second that - so cool!
