@@lonewanderer_n7 It's so important to always be learning and growing or you'll never have a better life. We have the world's information at our fingertips but also take the time to put some real thought into it. Everyone seems to be looking for help, see if you can take a few days or a week off from work (vacation/sick days) and ask a carpenter if you can help him for free for a few days in exchange for some insight into what its like as a career. Or do that on your weekends (off days) and probably within a month you'll either realize you don't like it or be familiar enough its not so scary to switch careers.
I think Carpentry is a God-given gift and you either have it or not. I'm 42 years old, but would love to learn how to build homes and survival camps out in the woods. I've been told that the first step to becoming a Carpenter is learning how to use a measuring tape, which is harder than some may think. Just watching Carpenters build things eases my mind with peace and calms my soul. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome comment Derek. Thank you so much for sharing. One little step at a time my friend and I will definitely put out a how to use a measuring tape video.

I've been a carpenter for 25 years, and everything you said was correct, except the word smidge is fine, but most people say c-hair. (C stands for See You Next Tuesday.) Good video.

Very helpful video, I’m glad Blue Collar Handyman mentioned your channel. Please think about hearing protection...you will thank me when you are my age!👍
Great video. I love your easygoing 'vibe', and you have a lot of classic tips and tricks here. You make rough carpentry fun and accessible, so I love that. One thing that I wanna bring up. As a horseback riding instructor, I always have my students wear a training helmet, and I wear one too, (especially if I'm on a horse I don't know well.) In the past, safety equipment was looked down upon as 'amateurish' and unnecessary. But we all have accidents, amateurs and professionals. A cheap pair of safety goggles is better than spending the afternoon in an emergency room, with a big piece of wood in your cornea. Just a tip that you might want to add to your next vid. Thanks, Buddy! You're awesome!
God bless you my friend. I just came here because I wanted to find a video and see how a Carpenter holds a tape measure. Turns out I'm not crazy! You hold it in your left hand and mark with your right hand, just like me, a "non-carpenter". And I read it upside down, naturally. I would like to join an unruly mob of frustrated laymen, and storm the Stanley factory. Subdue all their left handed managers, and turn their tape measure machines around, so they only make right handed ones! Cheers!
If you turn your speed square to the other side of the board it will be easier to cut as you are pushing with your right arm and pulling with your left. Provided you are right handed.
hey dylan! awesome man....carpenter is a trade you just jump into..beware...not all carpenters are nice so the new guys learn pretty quick.lol..you may want to find a company that replaces rotted wood, installs baseboards, fence guys or framers....

Im just going into carpentry didnt realize how precise you have to be with your cutting and drilling could be a lil nerve wrecking because I struggle with anxiety its definitely not easy
Finish carpenters definitely go into the 32nds. Not with the math really but when I make cut lists I might say this cut is 12 3/4 strong or shy. Especially when I'm doing division of balusters. If I do the math for my layout with decimals I might get something like 3.8375 on center for my whole row of spindles which is a strong 13/16". If I didn't go into the 32nds then that error accumulates and over a span of 8ft that could add up to my last spindle being a whole half inch off. You just need to know when it matters to chase that kind of precision in your work.
Carpenters I come from a family of inventors, engineers, & carpenters. Carpentry is the science of manufacturing with wood. The process started with Surveyors, Loggers, & Sawyers. Some carpenters are joiners (see Japanese joinery), some cabinet makers. Cabinet makers need more precise measurements, so measurements of less than 1/64th inch are used. A cabinet maker can cut to a precision of less than 1/64th inch, and then sand or plane to perfection. Carpentry is good clean work. If you want to be a carpenter, best is to apprentice under a Master Carpenter, and /or do work on the job. Next is to learn about carpenters tools, and have a few important ones: good belt and apron bag, large metal square, small square/triangle & protractor, levels long & short, chisels of different sizes, electrical & hand planers, electrical drill & bits, brace, electrical & hand saws, possibly hammer & conforming tool, pencil/scribe, compass. Then you will need consumables: screws, pegs, nails, rods. Maybe goggles & gloves & first aid kit (read and be proficient at first aid). Watch your hands and feet! Hydrate! Contemplate different ways of design & construction. Measure and plan at least three times. Cut once, oversize if necessary, and plane, chisel, sand to fit, shim if you made a mistake or must use short wood. Learn types of wood & wood treatments: stain, glue, caulk, paint.
Great video Dustin! Love how good you are at explaining things! Although I am sure that Jesus would have used a Milwaukee circular saw not a Makita! ;)
30+ years making sawdust some of this is spot on some kinda so so. It's which side of the line to you cut on. 34 9/16 heavy or light is the lingo I learned. If you need an accurate rip use a table saw. I don't like battery circular saws, give me my corded Bosch every day. Always have more than one pencil, the lead will break at the worst moment so be prepared. Bet this guy doesn't know many if any framing square tricks, ;-) Now go make some sawdust.
