    • @stxrynn

      @@carpediemarts705 It's an anvil saver. When using a sledge hammer to do heavy work, if you miss, the striking anvil takes the hit, not the expensive, hardened anvil facel. Also is a bit lower so the striker can get some power into the swing. The striker being a human power hammer.... Or rat powered if this is a documentary: ruclips.net/video/8Gwty_y2J78/видео.html

    We like to see thinks being made machined things are best and this is a really nice tool taking shape here. This is nice a plate small in overall size (meaning not a whole dedicated table but something our small shop could use to beat on with sturdy results this is giving us a few ideas that might adapt well for our shop and future. Thank you for this share we are new and we subscribed to continue learning more much more (and applying it too). Lance & Patrick.

    Can you forge on it? Yes. And that's all you need. If you need a horn, make one that'll go into the hardy hole. A simple round bar forged to a point is all you need. (Or you could have it turned on a lathe if you don't like forging stuff for some strange reason). Well done.

    I'm an amateur machinist and welder but was wondering?
    1: layout of the hole. If 1.000 D then put it straight in the mill, find the center of the hole and x:0,y:0 then corner is x: 0.500,y: 0.500 , etc - the radius of the drill bit and no center punch needed if you start the hole with a center drill.
    2: why not use a radius end mill on the corners instead of a grinder?
    3: when it's still in the mill why not fly cut the top?
    4: loved that you hand filed but if you invest in a dyna file you will not regret it. There are knockoffs that are cheap but the dynabrade cannot be beat. It is for sure a buy once cry once tool.
    C: I wanted to see a ball bearing bounce. A good anvil needs good rebound.
    Also what were the materials? I'm guessing the legs and feet are mild but maybe m3 or h11 for the big chunk?
    Keep building. It's becoming a lost art.

    • @PaulPinto
      @PaulPinto  5 лет назад +2

      1 the piece of steel already had a hole in it when I bought it so I couldn’t really start from a center point and for this application the hole didn’t have to be that exact
      2 I don’t have a radius end mill
      3 it doesn’t matter
      4 I don’t have one lol
      5 people make striking anvils out of mild steel all the time because it’s just going to get beat up anyway and it’s a lot safer because if a striker misses and hits the edge it won’t chip off and turn into a projectile like a hardened anvil would

    Why grout the legs? Damping perhaps? Fully cured grout has similar elastic properties (but not the strength) to steel. I can't imagine much energy loss between their interface.
    I submit two bays trianglating the legs will have several times the effect of grouting provided the assembly is securely bolted to a solid floor.

    • @PaulPinto
      @PaulPinto  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks! I’ve never actually used one and this one is for a customer but I definitely see how they make sense because you can make the stand a lot lower which makes striking much easier and you risk damaging a real anvil if you are working with an inexperienced striker. I wouldn’t want to spend a bunch of money on a real anvil and put it on a stand that’s too short for regular use

      Jeff Strauser I use 4340, sometimes 4140. That’s chrome moly. These are particularly good for striking, as they work harden. They’re very tough. Standard A 36, which you find more cheaply, deforms. After a while, it’s all banged up, and needs a good grinding or milling to fix. If that doesn’t bother you, then fine. But I use this for sheet metal too, and a flat maintained surface is very important for that.
