This is how I made my anvil almost a year ago. I love it! Extremely sturdy, cost effective and is holding up very well!! I paid $50 U.S. Dollars to have a welder join the forklift fork to the mild steel.
Forklift for FREE and mild steel $100.

Nice. Job, thanks for all the information. That’s a great idea to use old forks that are already hardened. They are sometimes available when they get sharp enough to be a safety hazard.

Nice one. Maybe someone can answer this for me:. Would there be any advantage to filling up that empty cavity with, say, sand or concrete or molten lead? Just an idea. I'd love to know if it would make any difference.

    • @SW-ii5gg

Often sand is packed inside of metal structures like that to absorb vibrations.

Cool project! I really like that you gave explanations and details. It gives it a classroom feel.
Tip for you.. a ball bearing is best (instead of a hammer) and will show you the true rebound.
    Thanks for the video..

Got my fork tine (takes a pair to make a fork) from an equipment rental place. They had emptied their metal bin the day before, but had a single tine in there. Let me have it for free.

I really like this build and will consider it for a flat surface anvil, my Peter Wright has quite a radius to the face.
Now we know Noah must have been something of a carpenter but might he have been a smith as well, just a thought.

when you welded the top plate you shouldn't have only welded the sides. it creates an air pocket like a cushion that may be why the rebound was so intense. beautiful work tho and gave me a great idea! I hope it works for you for a lone time!

  • @reverendbrothergenerik7976

So the striking Anvil usually has a fairly soft face, so it absorbs mis-blows, an idea I like. I think best is a solid anvil such as yours, but reversible so to present either face, soft or hard. You gonna mount it low? 24" or so?

Those wide kerf chop saws take much more effort than a 6" thin kerf cutting disc on an angle grinder. If you work metal and don't have a 6" grinder (9" are unwieldly while 4.5" limit wheel diameter and are underpowered) I recommend one. Happiness will result. I routinely cut heavy plate and stock with mine. I gave away my chop saw...

You have come as close as anyone in making an Striking anvil, but I was under the understanding that a striking anvil was made from mild steel.
Is the fork made from mild steel or low carbon structural steel ?

Those kind of deals only come along once in a lifetime, so no I will not sell them to you for 8.00$

Right, so I built this gorgeous control panel, complete with a $5000 PLC and I/O boards, when one day it didn't activate one of the solenoids to the on pos'n, causing the pump to run dry. Well, I got SO disappointed, that I burned down the entire complex of houses - complete with pets, my father, cousins & brothers annnd that's the end of the story. Print it.
Hey, I have a TON of open-ended stories for people to read and believe in -- they will NOT guarantee a better society, but if I SAY it will, you will adhere to the fables with collective societal pressure, the point of the sword and public beheadings, am I right?
Let us hear some more of this open-ended wisdom from which you blindfully quote..
