It's also why the buster deals more damage against Cut Man than any other Robot Master. Remember that in Japan, Mega Man's name is Rockman, and... well... you can put two and two together.
I think we've all fallen into that trap - when you have limited use of anything in a video game, the instinct is to save it for a boss! This game, and pretty much all of the Mega Mans, are MUCH easier if you get some good weapons early and use them liberally. Thanks for watching!
Same here, never used any weapon, including in stages where i knew it was useless against the boss. I also sucked at platforming so i used to start with cutman, then elecman, then i did elecman again because his weapon destroys throwable blocks so i could grab the magnet beam right away and use it to cross the gutsman moving platforms part.
My preferred strategy in Mega Man 2 was to do Quick Man and Metal Man first partly because those they give useful but low resource cost weapons. Even as conservative as I was with consumables, I knew I wouldn't run out of both of them. This hoarding behavior is funny, though, because it forces you to develop a higher skill level than you really need.
A tip for the clone MegaMan boss. He will always fire his weapon immediately, and you cannot dodge it....unless you switch to Gutsman's powers before dropping into the boss room. As there are no blocks, he cannot fire and simply backs up. Then switch to the Fireman's power and shoot away.
I cannot tell you how many times the Rock Monster made me cry. Please note, I did not note "as an adult." And yes, I watched the WHOLE video to arrive at the part I was so curious about. (I only beat this game once. I cleaned off my old NES, blew the hell outta the cartridge and played on, waiting for the game / system to inevitably start flashing and go down on me. It didn't. I finished Wily with one hit health remaining, screamed for joy, figured I'd try it again... and the magic ended with the flashing.) 11 years late, but that thank you this AND this channel!
The flying, mobile blasting platforms that are icy on Iceman's stage are the hardest platforming for me. I always use the magnet beam to get across that pit.
I used Cutman's weapon on Dr. Wily's second form because it can hit twice in one boomerang arc. This brings back childhood memories, it's the first game I bought with my saved up money in elementary school.
I really enjoy how even if you played these games before, there's a lot of personality to the commentary and lots of obscure things to learn that make it worth while. Learned a few tricks already to some games I have beat many times!
Beat this game for the first time yesterday. I took on Cutman and then went to Iceman after on my first run playing this game. Definitely glad I watched this video so I could get the boss order right and made playing this game a fair bit easier. Thanks Ucbvg!
Thanks for making this guide! I have gotten to the Yellow Devil several times but could never beat it and then gave up. With your strategy I think I could actually have success. I heard someone on Twitch mention this channel. The videos seem fun and useful
Thanks! I didn't know someone on Twitch mentioned me - that's awesome! If you beat the Yellow Devil, let me know - I love hearing about my viewer's successes!
Legit this is such a nice thing to have. I've always loved the aesthetic and concept of MegaMan but found the games VERY HARD. Seeing how you zoom through it is very helpful.
I used to start with Cutman and then follow the bosses weakness order from there* and I could never get the hang of the platforms in Gutsman's stage, so I'd always get the Magnet Beam first by retracing back into Elecman's stage and using the Elec Beam to clear a path to it. The Select-Trick can work with most the weapons, too, it's just easiest to use with the Elec Beam. *So I'd go Cutman, Elecman, Iceman, Fireman, Bombman, Gutsman.
Just came across this video today. Decided to play mega man on my original nes and after 30+ years finally beat this game. I gave up on it a few years ago, but thanks to your tips I finally did it. On to the next game!
I appreciate this channel because a casual player can follow this guide and beat the game. I've played these games so many times I can do it buster only, but not everyone has the time to learn enemy placement and patterns and hit boxes.
My first game I got as a kid. Never new about the Elec glitch. I beat that game forever ago as a kid. Tried to show my kids how to beat it and couldn't. Now the Elec/Fire man starter will help me through it. Thanks for the tips. Kudos to you kind sir.
The first game is a little different than the others. Most of the rest of the games have a very clear path mapped out. In the later games, there will be one boss who is particularly weak to the buster and you just use their power against the next boss, rinse and repeat. In this game, they hadn't really solidified that.
I usually did Gutsman first and then Cutsman, all the rest, seeing this makes me remember how short the stages were in the first game! I remember getting wrecked by Elecman before I knew which weapon to use, he's really hard without Cutsman's weapon! I don't think I used the magnet beam near enough either
Fun fact, the pause/resume trick isn't limited to just elecbeam but can be used with any weapon. Also, you don't need to mash, pause when it hits, wait for the enemy to stop flashing then resume and pause immediately. This limits movement of both the enemy and the shot, making it easier to say, hit the final form of Wily with the Cutter and taking him down way faster!
I've learned with the Pause Glitch that if you pause, wait 1 second, then quickly unpause and pause again, it's much faster since after at least 1 second the boss will lose it's invincibility frames, making fights like the Yellow Devil much faster.
14:23 Fun fact; because of the way screen-wrapping works, if you jump at the top of the upper ladder and press Up, you'll end up warping to the bottom ladder. It saves a ton of time and the hassle of the shell enemy there.
always enjoyed the mega man series (definitely never figured out the sequence of who to be first and so on in any game release, just figured it out as I went) .....for some reason the detail in the surprised look on his face when he jumps and the little foot scoot animation when he inches close to an edge of a platform before you jump still get me haha
I just now discovered this channel, and I really like it! I really like the intro to your videos that features the dog! By the way, I also always preferred to start with Fire Man first with Mega Man 1, for the reasons that you prefer (having Fire Storm early in the game makes the rest of the stages easier)
That alternate strategy in 28:50, 33:10 and 40:00 where you press Select rapidly and the boss take full damage with one hit just blew my mind. 🤯 You are a genious.
I love that you demonstrate using the special weapons in the stage. So many players stubbornly only use the basic weapon for everything which I feel is boring to watch. You show more content doing it this way. You’re great!
Such a difficult game, especially when no one in school knew any more than you did! The first time I saw someone beat the original levels and Dr. Wily popped up in the middle, It was insane. I've since beat it as an adult however as I'm doing with lots of these old games, many with your help and thanks to your guides aw ! Cheers !
I was able to beat Mega Man by the end of high school. As a youngster Yellow Boss got me 80% of the time, Mega Man clone the rest. This was one I was really proud of finally beating.
Easily my favourite NES series. I remember my Dad beating everyone with just the Mega Buster because we didn't know what the letters meant in the select screen haha. As a kid, I used to be scared of the Wily stages so I'd always hang back and go back into the levels and mess around with the weapons.
Getting fireman's weapon first really does help make the rest of the game easier. Also, the pattern you pointed out on the boss of Wily Stage 1 helped me finally beat it without using the pause trick. Also, Wily's 2nd form the cutman weapon works better.
You’re like the Bob Ross of walkthroughs. I often turn the sound down because the voice overs are so grating and irritating! You are calm and bring so much to the video! Thank you!!
Starting with fire is interesting, I usually start with elec man as he's easy and I also find his weapon really good (has less total ammo than fire though)
@@UCanBeatVideoGames Unless you learn the ladder glitch in order to get magnet beam without gutsman or elecmans weapon 😄 But that may be a bit overkill. That trick is hard and it’s easy to softlock the game.
That can totally work. Honestly, I'm surprised with how many commenters told me their strategy was to run Elec Man's stage twice. I never really considered that.
Due to having a knockback mechanic, Elec Man is actually pretty easy to beat with the buster if you get the rhythm down. After being knocked back, he takes a step forward, throws his hands up, pauses, then fires. As long as you hit him soon after his i-frames wear off, he'll just keep doing the same thing over and over again. If your timing is good enough, he won't even fire, though it's best to jump while shooting so that you won't be hit by the beam if he does fire. You can also stand on the blocks. You still need to develop a rhythm to shoot him as he jumps, but you'll be safe from most of the cycle of the beams fired from ground level. Wily 3 (and probably other places) has some sort of glitch where you can spawn Guts blocks out of thin air where the previously thrown blocks used to be. I don't know how to exactly do it but I was able to do it reliably back when I was good at this game.
Thanks!! Honestly, there's not a lot of information out there about how to beat the Yellow Devil without cheating. Its one of the reasons I wanted to make this video! Glad you're enjoying the channel!
@ajre82 It can be beaten with the Plasma Buster only along with the dissue of the select button. The pattern goes like this, the alloy orbs can only be avoided by jumping. There are 19 alloy orbs to avoid but it requires extreme hand-eye coordination and more importantly, patience. The orbs you need to jump over is 1,3,6,9 and 10 overlaps,14, and 18. Just remember to be calm and take your time, should you have the sanity to do so. At full health(28 units total) you can only get hit 7 times(loses 4 units each).Remember the numerical pattern and stand your ground.
I rented this as a kid and I think I just got past the Yellow Devil before I had to take the game back. So I guess I did pretty good? It's so much fun to see someone complete the game though!
FINALLY BEAT IT! FINALLYY!!!!! Once you get the Yellow Devil down, the next hardest part is getting past Guts man and the 4-boss gauntlet. A few tries with Wily and you can learn that fight.
Although I've also beaten all Mega Man games as you have, I believe that you're the better player and you know all the useful tips to beat the game in a much easier way, because I used to struggle and beat all levels here as the basic/original mega man and I'd save the abilities of the defeated bosses only in boss fights. Given that I was a little surprised to see you lose a life during the Fire Man level. I'm a very big fan of your channel and I love to watch you play all these classics that I also used to play and show us all the tips and tricks along the way.
Jared Goff: The Blue Bomber. Yeah, that'd work. He still wears blue now that he's with my Lions. And he certainly bombed last week against the Niners. It was still the best season I've ever seen them play in my lifetime, but it's a good thing it's a long off-season, it's gonna take until September for the wound to heal.
Great video. One suggestion for Fireman: you can find a sweet spot and spam him with a predictable pattern and never get burned. It'll take you 2 minutes TOPS to master and you'll never take damage vs Fireman ever again.
The Hyper Bomb is another good weapon for the select trick, because the blast radius is huge, and it's pretty powerful, though I do agree that trying to use it hyper sucks; I always fight Guts Man first, just so I don't have to use it. Another good strategy for Elec Man is to get close when you throw the Rolling Cutter; it hits him on the way out, and again on the way back, because his invincibility will likely have ended by then, so you can actually kill him in just 2 shots, if you're lucky.
After playing MM2 in 1989 or so, I became slightly obsessed with playing the original. Not sure how I managed to track a cop y down back then but I did. Not sure I ever beat it though, this game was pretty tough!
I had no idea the yellow devil had pattern to it that called for specific jumps, I could never beat it legit and always had to use the pause buffer trick, 25 years later I think I'll go and try it legit now that you've shown the trick to it.
In the last 24 hours I watched your Mega Man 2 playthrough, then Mega Man 3, and now I'm most of the way through your Mega Man 1 playthrough. In watching 2 and 3 I was like...these are barely "games". And now, in watching 1, I'm like, ah yes, there's the brutality I grew up with. Now *this* is a game. *This* is something you will have to practice at in order to defeat. *This* will punish mistakes. lol!
When I rented this, I never knew about the magnet beam. Which made the game impossibly hard. I played the hell out of this game and managed to get to the end, but there was a section that REQUIRED the magnet beam that had me stumped.
Always liked MM games for the bright graphics, and in this game the ice- & bomb man backgrounds. Now I love the ending credits (those seem to rival very late game backrounds), and it looks like I might be able to get there to see them myself! Great series, loved the mega facts and alternate strategies!
Hello there! As someone who's beaten the Classic Mega Man series so many times that i've lost count, I always enjoy watching these types of videos to see the different perspectives people have on the various games in the franchise. Overall this video was of pretty high quality and very well researched, but I do have a few minor criticisms: - The main thing which other commenters have pointed out is that the Pause Trick does work with every single weapon in the game, including the Mega Buster. You are correct that it is by far most useful with Thunder Beam, but it can also be used to say, take out Guts Man with one Hyper Bomb if done correctly, or destroy Cut Man with one Super Arm throw. - There are a few incorrect enemy names in the video. This is extremely minor but considering how accurately you described almost every enemy in the game I figured I'd let you know. These include Cuts Man -> Cut Man. Clone Mega Man -> Copy Robot. Bubble Boy -> CWU-01P (I know, weird name lol). Like I said, these are extremely minor critiques, the video overall is very well done! I will likely make similar comments on your other Mega Man videos if you find my feedback useful. Take care!
in the early 90's as kids we would make notes on what bosses to take out in a certain order, oh the fun, megaman was called rockman in our country of south africa
Finally, a game I beated as a kid. Before the final boss door at Fireman stage, you can farm several lives for the run (this was my cheat to beat it as a kid) I also used to start at cutman / bomberman stage. Great video as always
Funny. I always started with bomb man. That fire strategy is very nice. The elec beam trick works with any weapon though. I usually use cut blade with wilys 2nd form n it works well too. Didnt realize how powerful the fire storm is. Good show!
I start with Guts Man to get the magnet beam a little earlier. That, and having most of the weapons in Fire Man and Bomb Man's stages makes them almost too easy. For instance, you can hit a sniper joe with the ice slasher even with their shield up. If they drop their shield to shoot or jump and the freeze is still in effect, they'll still be frozen and vulnerable. If you can time the shot perfectly to when they would land just when they're first jumping onto the screen, they'll freeze in midair and you can switch to either your mega buster or fire storm to kill them without a problem. The ice slasher can also cause a very helpful break in Bomb Man's stage. The respawning shell enemy near the end was always a hassle for me, but if you freeze it and then ignore it, they won't respawn at all. You'll only have to deal with that first one. You have to move fairly quickly though. You have to get the first one off the screen while it's still frozen. Not jumping during the copy robot fight works, but another method is to do very small jumps and fire at a height roughly equal to where your head is on the ground. It's just high enough that the copy will usually screw up its jumps and get hit, or be on the ground and get hit. With some luck and good timing, you can lock him into a state of constantly getting hit, while barely ever getting hit yourself. Considering the first Mega Man is definitely harder than the second, I have to commend you on breaking it all down in an understandable way with strategies that most players can handle.
I like to start with Gutsman cause he's easy to win a damage race against, at least on the first fight. Then I can 2-shot Cutman and get the magnet beam on Elecman's stage. For canon fodder enemies, I use pause buffering to cancel the knockback. For example, in Gutsman stage, there's a Picketman on a two tile wide platform. I just jump into him, eat the damage and pause to avoid getting knocked into the pit, and then use the i-frames to move past him. This is way faster than shooting him, way more consistent because there is no risk of picking up an ammo or health pickup that will stutter the game and cause you to mis-time your jump (I have died so many times to this), and only costs a little bit of HP.
Tip truck for destroying the yellow boss..When you fire off Elec man bolt at his eye..keep hitting start off and on to extend the hit slowly and you can kill him with one bolt.
Something that's a little different about the Mega Man series (and this might just be me) is that all it takes is practice. I'll start off a new Mega Man game and if I haven't been recently playing a lot of them, it'll take me most of a day before I can manage to beat an entire stage and its Robot Master. But then, I'll just start knocking them out like it's nothing. I'll need every E-tank I can get at first but if I go ahead and work my way through the game a couple of times, I'll end up using maybe one or two of them if I make some bonehead moves. So, I guess what I'm saying is that if you're still having trouble with the game but you enjoy playing it, just keep grinding at it and soon you'll get the muscle memory and have the patterns memorized to the point where you can just murder jog your way through the whole game.
Hey, I get why Gutsman's weapon is so effective against Cutsman now. Rock beats scissors.
*MIND BLOWN*
My brain just exploded like Mega Man hitting spikes.
Thank you for this!
It's also why the buster deals more damage against Cut Man than any other Robot Master. Remember that in Japan, Mega Man's name is Rockman, and... well... you can put two and two together.
This is the best channel ever. You bring peace to my childhood pain.
Amen
Most of it .
WHAT HAPPENED WITH FATHER O'MALLY?!?!?!.
Childhood pain?
Hopefully it was video game-related.
I always have the bad habit of not using my special weapons in the stages. Looks à lot easier with the fire weapon. Might try this next time instead.

I literally never used the weapons in stages, the buster is enough to me, infinite ammo and decent shoot speed and range

Oh man. I had no idea Jared Goff was Mega Man. These videos really have so much information.
And now he's wearing the blue/silver/white of the Detroit Lions... You kind of have to wonder a little bit... 😆
Not true. I've been the clone without getting hit on multiple occasions.

The select button trick works with any boss weapon, specially Elecman's and Cutman's.
Yeah, that totally works! Obviously harder to get extra damage from weapons with a smaller hitbox, but if you mash that select button, it can be done!
and the first wiley boss the yellow devil
He also work on Guts Man too.
It works with standard shots too. Speedruns use it to kill first boss
I knew the Elecman weapon trick but I never knew you could do the same with Cutman's weapon.
The flying, mobile blasting platforms that are icy on Iceman's stage are the hardest platforming for me. I always use the magnet beam to get across that pit.
Yeah, that part is pretty mean, especially when the flying penguins come through!
They're especially difficult because if you get hit, you can get glitched right through those platforms even though you're still standing on it.
I used Cutman's weapon on Dr. Wily's second form because it can hit twice in one boomerang arc. This brings back childhood memories, it's the first game I bought with my saved up money in elementary school.
Amazing how you have simplified even the most difficult parts of this game. Well done! I Can’t get enough of these videos

The Elec Beam Yellow Devil trick actuality kept the fake fun for younger NES playing me.
I loved this game, the select trick is great, great video
I don't know how to exactly do it but I was able to do it reliably back when I was good at this game.
its funny how in the entire megaman series that cutman is the only boss whose weakness weapon can only be use before wily's castle
Thank you for making this video. Never liked the 1sr game much and finding it a chore to beat. This is a big help
BL3 has a weapon called the Cutsman and is a reference to a song that is in turn a reference to this game. It shreds too
I was never able to beat Yellow Devil without using the select cheat. Thanks for making it look easy. Been binging your videos, keep up the good work!
Definitely helps with different strategies, especially when the frustration kicks in lol
After watching a few classics on my own childhood, you got a new sub, sir ! :)
Starting off with a bang. That bit about Jared Goff had me rolling!
The first Mega Man game that I beat was Mega Man 8, and it's also one of my favorites.
I really enjoy the mega facts part. It would be nice to see those in other videos during downtime 👍🏻
FINALLY BEAT IT! FINALLYY!!!!! Once you get the Yellow Devil down, the next hardest part is getting past Guts man and the 4-boss gauntlet. A few tries with Wily and you can learn that fight.
Congratulations!!
It's Cut Man. I look forward to playing this again with your strategy.
Jared Goff: The Blue Bomber.
Yeah, that'd work. He still wears blue now that he's with my Lions. And he certainly bombed last week against the Niners.
It was still the best season I've ever seen them play in my lifetime, but it's a good thing it's a long off-season, it's gonna take until September for the wound to heal.
thank you, friend. i beat the game for the first time today, completely glitchless, thanks to you :^)
Great video. One suggestion for Fireman: you can find a sweet spot and spam him with a predictable pattern and never get burned. It'll take you 2 minutes TOPS to master and you'll never take damage vs Fireman ever again.
That's a good tip - I feel like I've done it on accident a few times, but it wouldn't surprise me to be able to do it consistently.
Amazing video ❤ I’ve been watching your channel for a month and can’t get enough. Thank you for doing a whole lot of work. I really appreciate it. ❤
Followed this guide and beat the game last night!
*This* will punish mistakes. lol!
Been loving all your videos keep up with the good work
Good explanation on yellow devil, you made that pattern look easy. Next run gonna try without elec beam exploit. Big jump on 4! Got it!
I used the select button with the electric beam for all kinds of enemies. It was a fun glitch
I wasted so much of my parents money renting this game and failing getting any farther in this game. Thanks for the nostilgia
When I rented this, I never knew about the magnet beam. Which made the game impossibly hard. I played the hell out of this game and managed to get to the end, but there was a section that REQUIRED the magnet beam that had me stumped.
Yes kind of game breaking. The magnet beam should have automatically appeared in the wily stage if you don't collect it in the elecman stage
I watched NintendoComplete play this one before watching this one... it can be interesting to see how different your Playstyles can be. :)
Always liked MM games for the bright graphics, and in this game the ice- & bomb man backgrounds. Now I love the ending credits (those seem to rival very late game backrounds), and it looks like I might be able to get there to see them myself! Great series, loved the mega facts and alternate strategies!
Gotta love that elec beam pause trick.
Oh yeah, that trick is a classic!
Hello there! As someone who's beaten the Classic Mega Man series so many times that i've lost count, I always enjoy watching these types of videos to see the different perspectives people have on the various games in the franchise. Overall this video was of pretty high quality and very well researched, but I do have a few minor criticisms:
- The main thing which other commenters have pointed out is that the Pause Trick does work with every single weapon in the game, including the Mega Buster.
Take care!
Dang, all these years and I didn't realize that fire man was so easy to take out. I always did cut man first...
in the early 90's as kids we would make notes on what bosses to take out in a certain order, oh the fun, megaman was called rockman in our country of south africa
Just ruined my childhood in so many of your videos, but I do enjoy the flashbacks.... the good days before updates🥺🙌🤣
Finally, a game I beated as a kid.
Before the final boss door at Fireman stage, you can farm several lives for the run (this was my cheat to beat it as a kid)
I also used to start at cutman / bomberman stage.
Great video as always
Thanks Rodrigo!
When you said yellow devil was the hardest boss in the game, i laughed. Even i know the pause glitch, and i'm no expert at this game. Great video.
That pause glitch works on all the bosses, well its not super effective on Bubble Boy, but it does work!
2 is remembered for its music but I think 1's music is great too.
Funny. I always started with bomb man. That fire strategy is very nice. The elec beam trick works with any weapon though. I usually use cut blade with wilys 2nd form n it works well too. Didnt realize how powerful the fire storm is. Good show!
Very true! It's a little pit harder with weapons that have a smaller hit box, but works just the same! Good tip!
Always start with Gutsman … then Cutsman and so on … I love your channel - Might have to start one of my own. Have an awesome and blessed weekend!
I've never known about these little tips about this. So awesome bro!!!
Tip truck for destroying the yellow boss..When you fire off Elec man bolt at his eye..keep hitting start off and on to extend the hit slowly and you can kill him with one bolt.
Close - the button you have to press is SELECT - but yes, that totally works on him, and on a lot of other bosses, too!
Woo, coincidentally watching this on the first birthday of its upload!
Hi from Argentina. I have just found your Chanel and I am amazed by it. Watching all your videos.
I've played megaman 1 for over 20 years. I find it easy and fun.
