- Alcohol inks are a great way to create quick drying, water color like designs on paper without soaking the paper. Unlike watercolors, alcohol inks will be less likely damage your surface. Since different inks have different concentrations of pigment, always test your ink before applying it onto your surface.
Please remember to work in a well ventilated are during this project! If you feel dizzy at anytime, take a break and get some fresh air! When you're working with alcohol inks, avoid working near any open flames or anything that may cause a fire since alcohol inks are flammable!!

I did this years ago and it was fun! If people really want to make a lot of their own ink, you should go to Lowes, Home Depot or any local hardware store and get denatured alcohol because the results will be better and for only are few bucks you can get a huge container that you can decant into smaller containers for all your inks at the ink solution will be closer to what Copics and alcohol inks are like. you can also buy an empty marker and fill it with denatured alcohol and use it as "blending solution".
I did all that and after makign several ink colors, I still have enough to last me a very long time. I even used the same method to make akcohok ink sprays to make backgrounds for some of my pieces. Lots of fun!
Why use denatured alcohol over rubbing alcohol? I have never seen anyone use that in all of the online tutorials. You say the results will be better but can you please be more specific as to HOW it is better? Thanks!
Well, first the price point since a quartz size container is only about $7 (at Lowes) and it last a very long time. Also, rubbing alcohol smells stronger than denatured alcohol. Rubbing alcohol is an antiseptic (although it can be used as a solvent) and meant for medical use, while denatured alcohol is a solvent (meant for industrial, hobbyist and artist use), it is a fuel for camping stoves and it is also used for cleaning (like industrial machinery). Rubbing alcohol comes from denatured alcohol or rather is a type of denatured alcohol, but is different (if I remember correctly from when I was doing my research a long time ago about it) because it's mixed with other additives (probably to aide with the antiseptic quality). And finally, you get better results with denatured alcohol because it is meant to be a solvent so it will do the same thing (and its qualities are close to those of) alcohol markers, which are solvent based (in most cases ethanol which is the denatured alcohol mix {poisoned} with methanol so dumb people can't drink it).
You can use rubbing alcohol by all means, and if that is all you have available; you will get a good result. However, I think that I'll keep mine in my bathroom cabinet to use as it was meant to and use the real deal in my studio to get smoother blends since it's basically the same thing that is inside of my markers and inks. I hope that explains it. It's more of a preference in the end because if you are content with the results and don't mind the smell you get with rubbing alcohol then go for it; remember that our art is all about personal preference and perspective. Anything (that is used safe and won't cause harm or mess with your art) is allowed in art.
aygo thank you so much for this info.
aliquot, not decant
aygo
You’re absolutely right about the denatured alcohol in inks. I also want to mix in some xylene, also from Home Depo, along with professional dye powder to see what happens. I’ll post my results on this thread.😊
I think these kind of inks would work really well with a simple pen and ink project. The muted colors like the one with just one marker filler would be perfect for something retro/vintage inspired. :3
His voice is so soothing
+Avina Vanis thank you =D
Avina Vanis
You should watch "maqaroon" her voice is even more relaxing than this👍
Very professional, thorough, clear, and helpful video clip. Thank you so much.

I'm looking for a diy permanent ink black marker. Do you think it would be okay to use these alcohol inks in the microwave on plastic shrink art?
Good technique! Do you think it would work with dry erase markers instead of sharpies?
There every lantern core logo and nice green lantern ring that you was wearing
Really good video.
Im so glad you made this video! Since it is sharpie ink, then can u make a video how to make a calligraphy pen? Or a fountain pen something like that?

Huh I wonder if you can use these with those envelope sponge bottles, that way you can use it like a marker? I wonder if it can be used as a caligraphy sponge pen then, that'd be very cool.

Cool just got another subscriber 😋😀
+Fabian Chavez awesome!! Welcome to the channel!! Stay crafty!!
Would squeezing the foamy bit help release more dye?
+toswingonastar it would but you end up having a good amount of ink on your fingers.
great voice... and i love how your hands "talk" LOL (i'm a "handsy" talker too sooo i have no room to talk)..
PS What kind of paper are you using? alcohol inks are created to work on NON-porous surfaces, sooo usually photopaper is a favorite. These papers you used looked like regular old copy paper or thick card stock...
Omg your so amazing ilysm!!!!❤️❤️
Kite Makers --- Am trying this, looks like a handy way to hand-paint coated ripstop. If it does not work for that like I think it will, I'll come back and update.
Hey Ray, I really love your videos. They're creative and neat to watch while I'm doing my homework. I noticed that you say the word "actually" quite a few times, maybe once every 2-3 sentences. It didn't bother me much, but I think it's a talking tick you might want to consider in your future videos. Again, really love and support your videos. Keep at it!
+Linda Wang haha no offense taken!! I noticed that as I was editing the video!!
4:24 love that sound
I bought the red sharpie and the result was clumsy? is that normal with some colors

Thanks for the info.
Can you use other types of markers or does it have to be sharpies
+FlamesGaming 81 I would probably try out any type of permanent marker with a similar spongy core.
+Get Crafty Crafty thank you this diy is helpful for me!
+FlamesGaming 81 i"m glad it can help!!
Would this work for a quill
Did it ?
These inks can be painted onto non-porous surfaces but how are they fixed ... does anyone know what varnish or fixative would work please?

LANTERN CORES!!
Can this be used for caligraphy
Your awesome!
+Sandy Robles you're awesome for watching!!
Actually the green lantern corp means will not power, but it's close enough, And you also missed the light and death corps!
It's close it's Will Power
look close as he shifts you can see will behind his head
Can you use this for stick and poke tattoos?
That's what I was gonna ask and I still see no answer😭 if you tried did it work?
Is the background green lantern?
Really??? For all of the people commenting on his hand gestures and how many times he used a certain word...get a life. If that's all you can find to complain about, that is pathetic. If it bothers you that much, don't watch his videos. I have never seen one of his videos...he gets straight to the point so we aren't sitting here for 25 minutes, has a soothing voice and most of all...knows what he is talking about. I watched it and immediately made 3 colors...at 2am. Nobody had to make a negative comment...you could have just moved on instead of being a jerk.
they are the green lantern core symbols
Are they green lantern core symbols?
+Simply Maddie yup!!
Knew it
+Get Crafty Crafty I knew it
The background is all the Lantern Corps in the DC comic Universe.
Did anyone else click on this vid under the impression that he was going to show us how to make inks to re-ink Sharpies?
muskndusk yup... only reason I clicked haha
