As a penholder myself I’ve always admired his game. Not the best RPB. He learned it just to have it but as a “classic” penholder learned it late and it could be argued he was a better player in the twilight of his career without it. Best 3rd ball player in the game.
The one thing i admire about him is that he doesn't play the nice guy in front of the camera. And the way he reads the game even if his opponent is ahead of him, i re-watched a decade old video of his match and still learned so many new things
I wonder how the Ma/Wang/Wang team will stack up against another team anchored by Ma Long, Zhang Jike, and Fan Zhendong? I can see one problem. Wang Hao has the Dragon's #.
They converted to the 40mm ball and that took a lot out of Ma Lin's service game. If not for that, Ma Lin would have become the best player of all time. Ma Lin's serves were unreturnable. He lost 2 world championships to Wang Liqin. If they were playing with the 38mm ball and traditional TT rules, he would kill Wang.
@@benthekeeshond545 no, it's not a joke. In his era there are fast players like Ryu Seung Min, and his rival Wang Liqin has much better strength. In terms of elite athlete he never counted as athletically talented. Even the steps he used are not fancy footworks but sound fundamentally. If he choose to play using a style that relies on athletic abilities he would be destroyed. Instead he uses serve and return to control the opponent.
1. His pendholder style is strongest amongst all styles till date. Even other penholders cannot match up to his expertise of using it like the way he uses. He can choose what to do with the racket and ball in milliseconds. There is no time for the opponent to understand whats going to happen with the ball. 2. Neither of his shots were simple. All his shots are very powerfull and tricky to understand. Many players wont be able to understand what is happening. 3. No europian player were ever able to beat Ma Lin except a couple and that was also with a very small margin. Maybe he was out of form or was pre-decided he has to loose 4. Only chinese players who sparred with him on a regular basis and did training with him would be able to understand his game then eventually in his last years some chinese young blood began defeating him like Ma Long and Xu Xin. Western players were completely out of league for him. He made everybody cry blood tears. 5. Xu Xin's and Ma Lin's pen holder style was same but it had many differences. If Ma Lin (in his prime form) went against Xu Xin (In his prime form), Xu Xin stood no chance in defeating him. Ma Lin was so good.

imo Ma Lin is more of a hardworker than gifted. yes he's got talent but I heard he worked til his shoes worn off LOL (and apparently 20 buckets of balls per session as well🤯)
What i dont understand is why professional players just dont throw the ball to oposite side when they are in rally , always sending the ball at the exact place that his oponent is playing.
Ma Lin = Lost Art of Power Forehand, Wang Hao = Lost Art of RBH, XX / RSM / KTS= Lost art of footwork/cloud walk, LGL = lost Art of speedy pip attack with trick serves.
Strong forehand, amazing loop drive, best footwork ever, perfect service, chop block incredible, lob and shoto accurate... Ma Lin is complete!!!
Footwork is debatable

ma lin perhaps the first world class player who used BH Banana shots - at least way before shakehand players found it as a weapon.

Супер-пупер мега звезда, это наилучший наш Ма Лин. Мой кумир, ты лучший и непобедимый.

He’s mentally gifted but not athletically gifted. He’s neither fast nor explosive, but his mindgame and technique is top notch.
Is that a joke?

U fool
Can you beat Ma Lin, shut up & stay quiet dumb
@@yudistiraliem135 you're kidding. Penhold is more athletically intensive than shakehand. And he is as explosive as Ryu is with his third ball game

Prime xu xin is undoubtably more athletic than prime Ma Lin though. Xu Xin also developed very well mentally.
For me waldner is the most talented player for all time, he made play table tennis looks easy.
