I don’t think people understand the love we have for D White in Boston 💚 great episode JJ
And in San Antonio! Gives us a team to root for in the playoffs
D-white is probably my favorite player to watch in the league right now. Super stars are super stars, but seeing white grow into what he is today has been awesome, you can really see his confidence show this season and he has the skill for it. Super fun seeing him succeed
Amen brother ☘️
D.White for all star baby!! He prolly won’t get it but Ayy ima say it!!!
He's is what they wanted Avery Bradley to be imo

Right, I cannot believe people thought he would come off of the bench at the start of this season. He shouldn't have came off the bench last year.

JJ just realized a dream of his. Most mentioned name on the podcast, by far.
Derrick White has been on the pod before
JJ so fired up about the rules is hilarious 😂
And so wrong.
He’s not a tier a or b player in his day. JJ Barea was his peer.
He’s wrong on so many levels it ain’t funny.
Palming and traveling and no hand checking and spreading the 3 point line are just a few of the issues he ignored.
Multiple superstars have admitted this new NBA is not the business and the ratings show it.
Moored scoring 70 points and teams scoring 150 a night on the regular is proof the NBA is easier, despite the more talented base.
More proof? Look at what happens n the international competition when the USA gets best by supposedly weaker teams because those teams play actual defense based on the rules.
JJ is a clown on this one.

Love me a good JJ rant. Had my jaw dropped when he was yelling for the 3rd time 😭 like damn bro I’m just tryna get my Chick-fil-A breakfast
Still can’t believe Michael Jordan based his game on Derrick white
He is the definition of The Most Valuable Player. Everything on my Celtics runs through and flows through Derrick’s hands. His basketball is and decision making are the elite of elite . I still can’t believe the spurs let us get him man. Thank you San Antonio.
⏸️
There is a reason advanced analytics have been saying Derrick white is a top 15 player since his spurs days. Elite defender, amazing on or off ball as a playmaker/connector, never makes the wrong reads, elite shooter, unselfish player. He’s the best rim protecting/shot blocking guard ever. Restricting White to the flawed term of ‘role player’ is being oblivious to basketball as a whole. He has countless ‘roles’ and pulls out the right card in the right scenario. This player is extremely rare which is why it is very undervalued/misunderstood. A ‘role’ can also be someone who scores the most points. Why is Cam Thomas not a role player when he only does one thing which is look to score. We love the eye candy which biases our understanding of who’s impacting the game the most. White can score which we’ve been seeing but he has a multitude of other weapons in his arsenal that make him such a rare, impactful player. He should not be confined to the talks of other role players because we need to look at impact on winning rather than this flawed term and Whites impact on winning has been at an all-nba level.
I've never seen a guard get blocks as regularly as he does. Even against bigger players, his hands always seem to be in the right place. And the play he made in Game 6 against Miami will never be forgotten in Boston. Even though the Celtics didn't win it all, to come back from 3-0 down showed a lot of fight, and Derrick had one of the most iconic plays in Celtics history in that series. Imagine, if they had won it all, that last second offensive put-back would be up there with Bird's steal against the Pistons.
I say this ALL the time! “role player” is borderline disrespectful imo because everyone has a role even Steph, KD, Bron and Giannis. Some roles may be more impactful or high lighted but it’s still a role.
Analytics pretty sure didn’t show that when he was with spurs lol
Can you point to a single advanced metric that has White in the top 15 in his whole career? No? Thought not.
Derrick is a fine player but exaggerating does nothing to help your case.
@@ImBarryScottCSS raptor, epm, bpm and others all had white as an extremely impactful player when he was in SA.
JJ made some truthful, constructive points about bringing energy to a group, regarding the Warriors. I hope they turn it around, for the sake of good basketball.
Why you acting like they are the only team that has played good basketball?
@@TheGod2gowhy you searching for reasons to hate the team that violated your cheeks for years?
@@TheGod2go fair to say, but personally I think it’s great to see every team in the league play well. Just makes it better for us as fans every night.
Edit: also, given the recent passing within the Warriors organization, I think JJ’s point still stands when it comes to “bringing the right energy.”
So excited to finally listen after the tease yesterday. D White is a true Celtic! Hard nosed dude.
Those six "rules" were added because the leniency of the offensive whistle allowed exploits, like trae jumping backwards into defenders and a leg kick on a jumpshot, and these were put in place BECAUSE players understood the defenses are scrutinized and any little contact results in the offensive players getting the benefit of the doubt. So those rules have fixed exploits the offensive players found because they understand they're allowed to get away with more things.
You are correct about all that but what JJ is saying is that the rules dont favor offense, which they don't. The officiating might favor the offense, but not the rule book
Sad, very true. Scorin' is .ore entertainin' than defense. It's a slippery slope. Even on NBA 2k, they have most guys' tendencies to contest a shot at 40. That means most of the league is barely actually tryna contest every shot. You can tell the difference between the dudes that grew on playin' on the blacktop.
@@evanmcclure6212 The rulebook 100% favors the offense by not implementing additional rules to help the defense actually defend. JJ needs to look at both sides of the coin, not just act like because there's nothing written to deter the defense that it favors them. And that must be what he's implying or I don't understand the point he was trying to get across.
@@SylvesterLundgren so what rule deters the defense other than 3 seconds in the paint?
JJ is by far the best NBA media personality (not just because he interviews everyone on the Celtics!)

Derrick white I love you keep rocking this season 🔥
Derrick White graduated from the role player tier already since last year's playoffs. Tommy Alter is the only casual in this pod that's full of ball-knowers.
Technically everyone is a role player it’s just sometimes players are in wrong role white is like manu for example and manu lead spurs to a chip but he didn’t always have huge counting stats and didn’t play a lot but he had mvp level impact at his peak and someone like Jaylen brown on Celtics isn’t a great overall player compared to white for example but has that star role .. it’s really mainly nba where it’s like that even with all analytics and what not
He is a role player lol wtf. You make it soune like role player is a bad thing. Everyone outside of your 1A/1B superstars, you are a role player. Your job is to fit a role that suits the offense and defense best lol.
@@user-hu2ed8oe8m so technically everyone are role players because being a star player is you playing a role lol

Well in Europe you can have your defensive Anker camp in the paint for rim protection but in the NBA the rules don't allow it, also they seem to be taking more and more steps with the gather step and things like that, not to mention how they constantly get their hands all around under the ball while dribbling

Spurs fan here, miss Derrick but he is thriving with a contender and I’m happy for him
Ja getting upset while being wrong is hilarious. It’s initiation of contact. It’s in the rule book that if the offense initiates the contact it’s an offensive foul but it’s been documented that the calls have been going the opposite way. All the rule changes that JJ name were just rules made to reinforce the original rule. That doesn’t mean defense has been getting new rules. That means they’ve been righting wrongs that’ve been over the course of time gradually leaning towards the offense.
We love Derrick White!
Wish he would add time stamps for the topics
Must be amazing for JJ to meet his favorite player of all time. He was acting very cool. I can only imagine if I met LeBron in person 😂

DW is great Nba player. He's a good shooter, scorer, dfndr, reader, communicater & he's also gud at being unselfish with e ball, playing w/out the ball and playmaking too.He has always been a top 15 player, but doesn't get enough credit. He's gonna be an All Star 2024 bc he's simply a great basketball head.#Role player.👍💯💯
i think more making this more of an interview and giving dwhite a platform to share thoughts freely rather than jj interrupting and getting on the soapbox and yelling sometimes would be more interesting. I want to hear white’s answer without feeling like you pressed him to give a certain type of answer. It’s fine if you want it to be a conversation and not an interview but since you already have a podcast we listen to, getting a chance to hear a new thought and perspective from the player is the appeal to me and it’s harder to get that when you’re not giving them that full chance to open up say their mind and have moments where they reveal something, and share their true thoughts and feelings in a way that doesn’t feel like a media trained answer. At your best that’s what your interview podcasts are and lately sometimes it feels like you’re not getting that and the vibe is a bit more tense, rather than relaxed.
I really like the question at 30:00 because I get insight into a question and dwhite’s thoughts that I wouldn’t get anywhere else.
Celtics fan here. We love D White!
something i dont see talked about apropo scoring, the 14 second shotclock change actually favored the defense but increased scoring

Lots of complaints about this pod in the comments and rightly so. So much time wasted on gambling ads and chatter, JJ ranting like he's on first take and a lot of cutting up the guest and monologuing tired old points.
We came here to listen to the players, please let them speak.
jj just because they fixed some of the rules that unfairly favored the offense to rules that make more sense and are fair doesn’t mean those rules “favor defense”. It just means things are better now.
Just because they changed some rules also doesn’t mean there can’t be other rules currently enforced a certain way that might be changed for the better.
#1 is that it’s a blocking foul if either of your feet are in the air when the offensive player runs into you basically. you have to be ‘set’ but you see a possesion where the defensive player has basically beat an offensive player to a spot and then there’s chest to chest contact but if they’re not totally completely set and grounded or their body is at a bit of an angle it gets called a defensive foul and sometimes that can be a bit much. It happens a lot.
In general the offensive player is allowed to initiate a lot of contact and it’s often called a defensive foul. Watch giannas. This complex of rule enforcement alongside dribbling/carrying/traveling rules, and the amount of moving screens set game to game that often aren’t called, is what people are referring to when they talk about rules favoring offense, aside from often less on point complaining about hand checking crap.
Yes players are better now offensive schemes are better skill on the floor is up ALL OF THESE THINGS can be true, AND, there can be rules that favor offense that sometimes take the fun out of the game and can at least be looked at for potential changes or tweaks so there’s even less fouls more flow and the game feels even more fair. I would look mostly at the ones about contact initiated by an offensive player and the enforcement of blocking fouls. But some rules that “favor” offense are fine too if they make the game more fun.
I recommend thinking basketball’s youtube video on the evolution of rule enforcement in the nba. Offenses being better now AND rules can both be a part of the conversation.
Also embiid does flop A LOT i’m not saying that’s all but it’s part of his thing.
Was not expecting JJ dad stories but hey fun pod😅

According to DW, Celtics coach Joe's defense strategy might also have confused the opponent.
I really like this RUclips channel and I watch a lot of the long interviews. Wanted to start like that, because the rest of it is not so pleasant. Please, make the extra effort to go meet this guys, if they cannot make it to your studio. Listening 1+ hour of conversation, where the main guest has horrible, echoing sound is just PAINFUL. Think of something. If you cannot travel yourselves, send an intern to put a simple recorder infront of him and physically bring you the clear sound several hours later, so you can mix it with the video. Or think of something else, but it needs to be better. Cheers and Happy New Year to all of you.

While the rules may not favour the offence, I do believe the lack of calls for travels, discontinued dribbles, etc. cater to the offence, which are unwritten rules in a sense lol
I'm not sure JJ understands its not the actual rules that have changed but the way they're officiated that has changed.
Moving screens now vs 15 years ago are crazy different. Few players could get away with moving screens, now it's basically wreslting sometimes.
The gather step was fine for the most part but now with the ball handling rules being looser you can get basically get away with 2 extra steps.

Would love to see Giannis on the podcast🤔
They've probably tried already. Giannis has only gone on a small Milwaukee pod and he got Dame from it.
Did JJ really just say "people claim there are rules to help offensive players?" Are you kidding me? Yes. The rules were changed. I'm not sure how you don't remember. Hip checking rule? Landing spot foul? Did you really not know that? The stated goal of those rule changes was to get scoring up because the games were so low scoring at the time. That was the intention.
They still call the fouls that they made rules against. The calls trae young gets, he still gets. They stopped giving them those calls for a couple months. the nba refs have a rule enforcement problem.
@@Steeezzzzz well I agree with that but I remember when they changed the rules because you had to relearn how to play defense by the new rules. And it made it much harder to be effective on defense.
I like Derrick.
JJ talking about six rules that favor defense is just wrong... those are six rules that they FIXED because they favored the offense.. those are not the same thing..
