The way Ricki used to throw around that AIDS thing though SMH. I mean, it was a different time then and what she said was somewhat true, but the dramatic and insensitive delivery of it all. This is why to this day there’s still such a huge stigma with HIV and AIDS.
My thoughts exactly! I was soooo uncomfortable. I definitely thought they had more knowledge of HIV/AIDS in the 90's....Especially 96'! I guess not where Ricki was...
I’m not sure how old you are but during the 90s HIV/AIDS was a huge epidemic. Magic Johnson who was like the Kobe Bryant of his time (actually more popular) had contracted HIV, and Eazy E had died a year before the airing of this show. It’s way more different now (30 yrs later) with the advancement of treatments. The seriousness and attention was definitely warranted during this time.
Through a 2023 lens, Ricki's commentary seems pedantic, but it wasn't that hyperbolic for 1996. It's what everyone was saying about HIV/AIDS--from the medical community to those living with the virus. The mid-90s and earlier were much scarier times for those living the virus. Keep in mind that an HIV or AIDS diagnosis was still seen as a death sentence before the late 90s because the drugs that now allow modern patients to live normal, long, healthy lives with a single daily pill weren't yet available. In those days, an infected person was more likely to die from the disease than live decades with disease (which is what we often see today). The drugs that allow for people to live healthy lives hit the market the same year this show aired (1996), which was still too early to know the long-term positive effects of the drugs. Nowadays, many HIV patients who are successfully in treatment will typically have the same life expectancy as uninfected people and are unlikely to die of an AIDS-related illness when their time does come. This wasn't the reality of the mid-90s and earlier.
@@dl9786 .. I totally understand, AIDS more-so than HIV was headline news back in the mid 90’s, there was less understanding and that’s definitely reflected in the way Ricki would speak about it. She made AIDS sound icky and if you contracted it you would be a social pariah. I’m sure she would even cringe looking back at these shows because I know for a fact she knows better now. It’s just so awkward to watch in 2023.
If Ruby was 33 in 1996, she was born around 1963 which means she caught HIV in 1980 maybe 1981, she would’ve been one of the first people in the US to get it.
Back in the 60s it was normal nobody back in those decades had one night stands every one had just one partner in their life it was pretty normal back then there was marriage having a family after that it got messed up the 80s and 90s till today
@@albihysenaj5997 Nonsense. The sexual revolution was a big thing in the 60s and 70s. Not to mention the fact that there were little to no laws put in place to efficiently protect sexual assault victims until the mid90s. Clearly many of these girls are victims.
@@Spice99857this was filmed in 1996 the same year the cocktail became widely available. So she was probably on it at this time. So there’s still a good chance that she’s alive now. Especially since she didn’t have full blown AIDS at this time.

Too exaggerated. Traumatizing sex. Also going in a bus, staying around people can get you sick, so what they want to close everyone in the house like 2020 because of diseases? 🤦♂️ I just don't understand why all these girls wanted just one time for every man and some stable partners instead?

Well time was different back then today this stuff doesn’t happen there is zero bodies
Exactly but it was 1996
I’m not sure how old you are but during the 90s HIV/AIDS was a huge epidemic.
Dorothy should be a freaking comedian. She was cracking me TF up!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂
I was 3 years old when this episode aired.
@1:03 just hearing an audience member screaming "WHAT!"
😂😂😂😂😂
Watching this makes me wonder how all these people react to the music and standards today . Like have they met sexy redd and suki ???😂😂
I wish we could have updates on these guests.
@@Merrimantdm that be interesting
@talkshowrewind in the beggining you have it listed as 1993. But in this episode Ricki makes it clear that its 1996.
DADDY ISSUES IS REAL!!
If Ruby was 33 in 1996, she was born around 1963 which means she caught HIV in 1980 maybe 1981, she would’ve been one of the first people in the US to get it.
That or drugs cause it was still a “gay” disease. If only we had contained Patient Zero.
No shit, and she's most likely dead by now. R.I.P. Ruby
@@Spice99857this was filmed in 1996 the same year the cocktail became widely available. So she was probably on it at this time. So there’s still a good chance that she’s alive now. Especially since she didn’t have full blown AIDS at this time.
Dorothy missed her calling as a comedian or comedic writer. 🎭😆😆😆😆
Evonne, where are you?! We need an update!
Ricki Lake was my boo😍
We need a where are they now episode because 😮🤯
Yaaaaassssss I was thinking the same thing. I wanna know if the first guest changed her ways
20:19 when she told her to sit her ass down 😭😭😭
Evon obviously had something happen to her when she was younger cause she was 14 too young to be sexually active so yeah its easy to pick up on bad habits like that when something bad happens
“I was a virgin until I was 20” the way she said that, the way she says most shit is absolute mean girl energy.
😂 I completely agree! She’s always inserting herself to gain even more attention 😂🤦🏽♀️
This was back in the 90’s attitudes are different
Too exaggerated. Traumatizing sex. Also going in a bus, staying around people can get you sick, so what they want to close everyone in the house like 2020 because of diseases? 🤦♂️
I just don't understand why all these girls wanted just one time for every man and some stable partners instead?
This comment is absolute insecure girl energy lol.
