IMO, the hugest factor in mitigating pet smells is the flooring. A carpeted floor is just asking for odor retention no matter how many times it's vacuumed, cleaned deodorized, etc. With a carpet, there is often no way to tell until far too late when somebody has decided to turn one particular corner into a new relieving area, and the embedded odor only reinforces the behavior. I finally began getting rid of the old carpeting in 2018 once my wife died, and the difference is night and day. (I swear the old carpet should have been declared an EPA cleanup site!) Plus, on a solid floor, spills can be spotted and cleaned up relatively quickly and more easily deodorized to discourage further "accidents" and minimize smells. Temperature plays a big part as well. Right now, I don't perceive any odors but in summer, even with the AC on, the warmer air seems to promote evaporation of aromatic chemicals and once I become aware of an odor, I know it must be bad. Why? Nose-blindness. Your residence will always smell better to you than an outsider, and even when you smell nothing, a visitor might.
The 7 tips pretty much cover it. There is no Litter Genie here. My own health and disability sometimes get in the way of scooping daily. And that same health prevents use of scented litters. Deodorizer? I cover bottom of litterbox with baking soda before pouring litter in. There is a monthly swapping and washing of the 2 sets of 2 litter boxes for my 2 orange tabby rescue fellows. Wow, they will be 14 and 15 this year, where does the time go! 🙀😸 Diet: with the various cats who have shared my life since the 1990s diet has been found to really make a difference. These 2 fellows are both on a bladder crystal diet several years now and that seems to produce far less malodorous waste than some commercial foods. 🚽 There is one litterbox each side of toilet & a mix of 3 different kinds of scoobable litter is used. 😸😺 Sometimes the guys will follow me to the bathroom and we'll have a group "elimination event". So, is that a sign of imprinting? 🤔
Oddly, my cat was a feral from the street, who almost immediately taught himself to use the toilet to urinate. No idea how he picked up on the idea, maybe smell? Sadly, he didn't flush.
As a cat owner, I take a sense of pride in keeping my home smelling fresh. The game changer for me was switching to pine pellet litter. I don’t smell litter when it’s clean and it disguises the smell really well! If you have a cat in a dorm, try switching to pine litter and your roommates will thank you! 🙂
@@MaynardsSpaceship yes, we used pine pellets for our house bunnies and guinea pigs and now for our cats as well. We use equine pine pellets, much cheaper than feline pine. It's good to prevent odor, easy cleaning, healthier than clay litters, and the cheapest thing out there. They are tan colored little wood cylinders about and inch or so long that turn to sawdust when they get wet.
@@ColorMeConfused29 did you start using a different brand? Do you use equine or feline pine? Have you noticed this change on multiple bags of the pellets or just a single bag? It could be you got a bad batch, it is a natural product and can vary from bag to bag.
We rotate litter boxes to give each litter box time in the sun each day. We remove solids then place in full sun. This neutralises odour very effectively.
She’s absolutely right about the automatic litter boxes. Keeping them clean are definitely a chore. Something like the Tidycat Breeze is so much better and easier to keep clean if your cat will use it.
I have to agree about Dr Elsey's clumping litter. I and my cats were huge fans for years, but as you mentioned it got sticky and just wasn't the same quality as before. I used Garfield cat litter but it seemed to make my cat itch, switched to soft pine cobble. Once he got used to it he has no issue using the litter box. I use ModKat litter boxes/ Litter pans, I find them easy to use and I love the liners that keeps the box very clean. Of course, as you say, clean that box every single day do not let eliminations sit for a week and then wonder why your house smells. A simple sprinkle of baking soda works wonders. Thanks for the video.
I used a liner for years, but the cat I have now actually pulled the liner and its contents out of the box and dragged it through the house! Mercy! I've never seen a cat do that.
I used Dr. Elsey's litter and loved it until it started to creep up in price, dust, and hardened like cement. Also, I have fibromyalgia and carrying heavy litter up 2 flights of stairs to my apartment was getting harder and harder. I switched over to grass seed litter and will never use clay again. It's lightweight, clumps hard and contains odor well. Only downside is it tracks everywhere. But, putting litter mats and pet rugs by the boxes catch most of the litter. I have a hand dust brush and pan for quick clean up. I have 5 cats and there's very little to no odor. I do scoop whenever someone uses the boxes and first thing in the morning before feeding them. I also keep the soiled litter in a sealed box on the balcony behind my apartment. That contains the odor between trash days. It's possible to keep your home odor free while having multiple cats. It just takes commitment and upkeep.
Dr.Elsey's quality has gone down terribly. The last bag I got was brown and had weird shiny bits in it. And the odor control was nearly non-existent. I'm very disappointed because the clumping is still pretty good.
Thank you! You briefly touched on odor controllers can be problematic for cats health. It’s my understanding that enclosed boxes combined with airborne dust particles (of both litter and odor controlling agents) is a particularly bad combination for cat health.
that Litter-Lifter is awesome. i really didn't realize type of scooper matter until i got one. i'm able to easily pick up little break off pieces without them falling back in.
When I do the weekly clean and change litter out completely,I spray odorban in box before washing it thoroughly with hot water. Then I sprinkle baking soda in bottom of box before adding clean litter. I also keep a box of baking soda sitting right next to the box. We have four cats and five boxes and have never had an odor problem. Of course,I scoop daily as well.
Litter Lifer scoop is fast, but leaves small pieces behind. iPrimio non-stick was your fav & I'm still using it, Tkx. Changing the litter & deep cleaning the box, after a set time, makes a difference too. You mentioned B4, to put some of the old litter on top of new, great suggestion. Some time ago, I started wearing a mask when scooping & pouring new litter. This not only helps for the dust, but the smell too. Probiotics can help too.
Another great video thanks for making it. I'm still happy with pine pellets for my kitty litter. $6 for 40lbs is hard to argue with. I just treat it like standard litter nowadays. I got a sifting litter box (that arm and hammer one) and messed with sifting out the sawdust after scooping for a while, but it's more trouble than it's worth. Now I just scoop the poo once per day (ish) and add a cup of pellets. Then once a week, or as needed, I dump the whole thing and add an inch of fresh pellets. I never notice a pee smell. One of my kittens is really bad at burying his poo, more incentive to scoop often I guess, so I smell that; but the other kitten is good about burying and I don't smell it as much. I do need to get a better place to scoop to, right now it's just a cheapo plastic can that grocery bags fit in nicely, but it leaks odors. The litter genie bugs me what with its DRM bags. Plus I think I could DIY something like that from some drainage pipe and a couple plastic plates. My kittens have only ever used pellets so I can't comment on whether many cats will take to it. That arm and hammer sifting litter box I have is kinda small now that they're 7 months old so I'm getting a new bigger one. The stainless steel one Mallory showed off looks neat, but it's a hundred bucks almost for an oversized baking pan. Ikea has a gigantic plastic tub for $5-15 that I've seen a few people on RUclips claim is great, but it's probably a bit too big. I'll just order a bigger cheap plastic one for now. That's what we used for my cat growing up and she made it over 21 so we must've been doing something right. Pellet litter scoop? I am intrigued, to the googles!
My tip is keeping the litter box in the bathroom can make it easier to clean more often rather than hidden away and out of site. Thank you for your recommendations. I have used that new litter that's out, but it's hard to find. I also like the unscented worlds best litter it is also a corn based litter.
My problem with the bathroom is that we also have the washing machine there (we live in an apartment) so I'm afraid kitty would be too stressed to go when the machine was on. I could maybe do laundry around her bathroom schedule (yes she has one lol) but at the moment I just have her toilet in my office and I don't mind it, as there's no smell.
I use pine pellets and they work great. I have 4 cats and it really helps the smell. When I pet sit a cat and they use clumping clay, the ammonia smell reinforces why I use pine.
I have two of the tuft and paw boxes. I get asked about them anytime someone visits the house. They aren't cheap, but the nested tools are handy and I was done with ugly cat boxes.
We started off with our cat using the litter box inside. As a courtesy to my family members (and queen Kitty herself), I'd scoop out anything the moment I saw something. A little overzealous, I know. Then our cat started spending more time outside. At first, she'd want to come in to use the box - which seemed cute and silly - but now, it's very rare that she goes inside. I bought a new bag of litter as the last one was getting towards the end and they're both still sitting in the "cat cupboard" a good 4 months later or more (originally, I'd get a pack a fortnight). I imagine cats prefer to go outside where they can choose where/when etc. I just love that we've always got a clean litter box now and she still goes in the right spot if there's an emergency. Who wouldn't love these little darlings?!!😸
I stopped using scented cat litter be ause I wasn't smelling pee or poop but when people would come over they could smell the litter . Now I use unsented and no more smell. Thanks for the tips
I use Petco's clumping litter. I can refill a 16lb jug for $8. Instead of filling the litter box, I make a mound in the middle. The cats naturally go there and I use much less litter. It clumps well. I scoop after each use. No odors and no damp litter sitting in the litter box. The only exception is, one cat likes to P in a particular corner of one of the boxes. I have to put some litter there for her. Good video, as always.
You might want to try pine pellets. $6 gets you 40lbs at tractor supply and similar stores in the US. It's a tossup whether your cats will take to it though, and you have to scoop the poo mostly on its own rather than with a nice 'breading' of litter on it which bugs some people.
Lol, Petco's clumping litter is pretty decent. . .Our only problem is despite having a pair of very good sized boxes: One cat will always pick a corner as close to the edge of the possible a good fifty percent of the time. . .the other will frequently dig to the bottom of the box. . . thanks cats.
@@hallaloth3112 Cats definitely go out of their way to thwart our plans! I had a cat that did the same thing as yours, dig to the bottom. Then she would scratch at the litter endlessly, until we had to chase her out of the litter box! Good luck with your cats!
@@edschulhof6303 lol. . .our one that goes on the sides also 'cleans his paws' by slamming on the side of the box instead of covering it half the time. Annoying as heck at 7 in the morning, we've chased him out a few times. But it is what it is. . .as long as I keep on top of it it stays mostly clean.
Me? Walnut. Amazing stuff, quick clump, best, but pellets will do, three inches on the bottom. Quick clumping non scented litter on the top, about 4 inches. Any type will do. I have a 20 pound cat. I can’t even count how many cats I’ve had. Over 50 years. And this is the magical formula. My daughter came over one day and since he’s such a big cat, the box is big, and heavy, I asked her to help me do the ‘big clean” you know the complete dump and wash, she said man this doesn’t even smell bad. And it wasn’t fantastically clean, I’m older and he’s a bloody big cat 🙈. True story. I DO scoop regular. Ps. I had no idea my little rescue kitten was going to to turn out to be such a BEAST. Bit this works. And, the food. You gonna give them wet food, it STINKS. 🤷♀️
@@MissDanieller17 i tried that pine litter, and the cats hated it and when they used it the stuff emitted an awful odor. threw 35 lbs rest of it on the garden.
I've been using World's best flushable litter for over 3 years. I put the box in the bathroom, so it's easy to flush the dirty litter right away. It clumps really good and absorbs smell pretty good. It never caused any problem to the toilet system. If you don't like the idea of bagging dirty litters, I would say give it a try.
Hi I am brand new as my son moves to my place temporarily I do not know what to do with the smell. He goes to work not being able to keep up. My house is new but I do not want to smell anything. I started to watch videos hack to be able to help the house stays fresh.
Good tips. I have a nice spacious stainless steel litter box and a large metal scooper, and together, even though I still have to wear a mask because of the smell if I'm soon after one poops and for the dust, it's satisfying scooping out all the poop and pee, because I want my two cats to be comfortable and to use the box. My other litter box is plastic so I need to replace that but it's inside a cabinet so I need a smaller stainless steel box.
Thank you for the tip to use stainless steel litter boxes! I'll definitely be looking into them! Just to pass along another tip; both my vet and Jackson Galaxy agree that the best number of litter boxes to have is one more than the number of cats you have (and to spread them all out in different areas of your home), so in your case, it would be 3 boxes. I have 3 cats, so I have 4 litter boxes. 1 on the first and second floors, and 1 on either end of the basement, and nowhere near their feeding stations, any of their water bowls, or their cat beds/trees/scratching posts.
Yup I need to stay vigilant with daily cleaning, I bought gloves so that I can get at it with gusto. Right now she has diarrhea so clumping litter is essential. I use Dr. Elsey Ultra. Also I use a trash can with a cover. Her covered litter box is in the bathroom. I also keep a notebook which is a journal of what my cat eats daily, when she vomits hairballs or throws up food, and her response to different cat foods.
I use pine pellets so the urine just turns the pellets into dust, which fall through from the top pan, into the bottom pan, which is lined with a puppy pee pad. Its strange how that dust is pretty dry and has no odor. I remove the pee pad with the dust once or twice a week and throw it in the garbage. For the "solids" I use a pine pellet scoop to separate the solids from any nearby pellets, and put them into a doggy poop bag which I tie up. This bag is placed into something similar to the Litter Genie--the Litter Champ. With two cats, there really isn't much output when its only the solids that are going into it. Once a week, I'll change the Litter Champ bag. This is the only place there is ever any amount of smell and it is minimal. Usually I'll sprinkle in some scented litter baking soda into the Litter Champ just to freshen it up. Before I switched to pine pellets, my experience was that Slide always started to smell bad after a week--way faster than any other litter I used. I still have a giant bag of it in my garage.
Skip the puppy pee for a few days and try just putting a scoop of pellets in the bottom pan. Your wallet might thank you. Maybe with a sprinkle of baking soda if their pee is real stinky. I use pine pellets too and I don't even bother sifting anymore. Just scoop the poo daily, add a scoop of fresh pellets, and dump the whole thing at the end of the week or as needed.
@@Jcewazhere 100% this advice. I also put a small handfull of pellets in the bottom pan and there's no need for a bag or a puppy pad. You just scoop the poops daily, empty the bottom pan when needed and clean the whole thing once a week. Better for your wallet (and the environment) :)
can you tell me where you buy such cheap pine pellets? Feed store (like Tructor Supply)? Also, what kind of litter box do you use that is multi - level? And may be a scoop recommendation?
@@yuliyak4117 Tractor Supply. They are marketed for horses as stall bedding. The bag is green and has a silhouette of a cat and rabbit (on the front towards the bottom). Edit: the litter box Look for a sifting litter box. The top part has slats so when the pellets turn into dust they can fall into the bottom pan. Most of the time I have to grab onto both sides and shake it like I'm panning for gold, but you can also take a litter scoop and drag it over the pellets to get the dust to go down to the bottom level. Scoop: I haven't found a great one yet for pellets. They all seem to be about the same.
I leave my kitties alone for a couple days at a time because of work and then sometimes I just forget. I keep 2 boxes for 2 cats, use crystal litter from fresh step, other brands are not as good. I use a Johnny Cat jumbo liner, and put an entire small box of arm & hammer baking soda under the liner for when they inevitably shred the liner and urine leaks into the pan. I end up scooping only 2-3 times per week and replace the litter when the color of the crystals start to look more than 25% green or yellow than clear and blue. This litter is expensive and after reading comments in tempted to try the pine. But I have to say the fresh step crystals are exceedingly good at trapping odor.
My cats used to eat clumping litter when they were kittens and it made me so mad and scared for their health but I’m so SO glad they don’t do it anymore 😭
Here's something I've learned having had many felines. Put a healthy layer of organic baking soda along the bottom of the box. Then add a thick layer of clumping litter. Then add a very thick layer of clay litter. Clean it out every 2 day's. Way less smell. The price of pine or shavings in pet stores is absolutely unaffordable for most people. Aa well I feel to share that I've purchased many brands of healthier wet catfood..but my girl's won't eat it. And for a few month's now they are also having a difficult time with the cheaper brand's. Clearly there is something in kitty food that is not safe. I'm considering making my own. Love to all 💚💌😽
I still use Boxie cat litter they have an unscented litter and an unscented spray. Although it does smell more in warmer weather, I still use Purina one wet and dry I think keeping the cats on their foods only helps with odor. For us as humans to completely eradicate their odors we can’t really. We might be tired to scoop out twice a day or busy at least once we should do it use the Litter Genie. Get a clay base clumping that’s the best!
Great video, but I noticed when I changed my cat's diet it cut out that smell and on occasion I had to use regular Arm & Hammer baking soda but I scoop his box once in the morning and once at night never had a odor problem unless I give them turkey cat food LOL and the other added thing is I keep a scented candle burning in my vanity bathroom I get the scented candle from the dollar store
I use pine pellets mixed 50/50 with non clumping clay, works perfect , I have 2 cats and scoop every time they use it, never any smell, when I scoop ,I put it in a ziplock sandwich bag, and then spray air freshener in the bag and put it in the trash !
Have you tried Catit's pea litter? Ever since I tried it I couldn't use anything else. Indeed the two products are all scented but the Vanilla smell one actually isn't off putting at all, after a long time it actually still smells a bit like a vanilla cake and cats do like it. On the "source" of the smell itself, if you try raw food feeding you'd notice the smell changed almost immediately. The more of the raw food the less of the smell especially when it comes to poop. :)
Fresh step, outstretched I've found to smell the best. Unfortunately my husband insists the arm and hammer one he buys is the best one. But I smell it all day even when its been scooped. So I'm trying to find a solution that would make us both happy.
Have you tried CatSpot coconut clumping litter? I've been using it for a while and think it's great. It clumps hard and really controls odor (with regular scooping and cleaning, of course). Unfortunately, it is expensive, but worth it if you can afford.
Really appreciate your insight and tips and tricks on this topic. We adore our cat. She is 6 years old and we did rescue her from our local humane society. We has a habit of peeing inside of the litter box, but she ends up peeing over the sides which causes urine to run down the outside of the box and onto the floor. We have tried high side boxes, boxes with dome lids but cat pee still tends to leak out. Any suggestions on what we could try?
Hey Cory, that's a great question. One tip is starting with a larger litter box to give her some more space, and then secondly, you may want to try a litter box with high sides that are made from one piece of material rather than a separate cover, like Frisco's high-sided box. Large storage bins can also work; you can cut open a hole in the side for her to walk through, and then the smooth, high walls will contain everything on the sides.
IDK if this has anything to do with the change in the quality of Dr Elsey's products, but per their website, they moved their manufacturing in 2020 "to a larger facility located in Cheyenne, WY for closer access to the source of silver sodium bentonite clay and better access to the railroad system used for product transportation".
Love this channel and very informative about cats 😃 thank you so much 🙏🏽 I have been using Pretty Litter for the last 1 year and my Arthur 🐱 loves it. It is a bit pricey but I feel it works for him and me. Doesn't smell and just need to only scoop out the poop and flush it down the toilet. Plus the litter needs to be changed only once every month.
I really wish they made stainless steel sifting litter boxes. If they're out there, I have yet to come across one. I've even tried to think of ways to get creative (add in a stainless steel grilling pan? Ah, not big enough...) but to no avail...
Send Cut Send and a metal bender? Be about as pricy as that fancy steel one they linked here I bet. Or get two cheaper steel pans and a dremel or drill and cut the slots in one of them yourself. It'd be a couple hours of work but probably worth it.
We first used a non scented clay based clumping litter and had barely any smell with it but switched to Cats Best original as is made of wood and flushable, but now we can smell the poop for so long after the cats gone to the litterbox. Her diet is mostly the same and we live in a small apartment and she gets the after poop zoomies so she'll spread her poopy smell everywhere! Not sure what to do :(. We clean it daily but sometimes she'll poop around 10pm or so, right before we go to bed.
Pretty good! Personally, I don't use them because I find the pellet scatter a little annoying and haven't found a sifting litter box that really works for me (nor does scooping seem very easy), but the odor control is great, and they're so cheap!
Just some comments to take or leave: My vet says to avoid baking soda or products with baking soda because it is irritating to your cat's eyes. I've also read that cats hate litter box liners so don't use them. I don't use clay litters because clay is a non-renewable product, with all the issues that implies. I currently use Oko cat litter, a wood product that comes in original (pellets) or soft (sand-like texture). I have 8 cats & they all like it, though some prefer the soft texture. I've used a corn cob litter in the past that was really good, but I can't find it anymore. In my opinion, asking your cat to use a covered litter box is like asking a person to use a port-a-potty on a blazing hot day with the added bonus of breathing in used litter dust. Yuck. 🤔
Thank you. This is helpful. So we have Three cats and two litter boxes. However; one of the cats will pee on clothes, bath mats and blankets. She has access to the litter, but I'm getting frustrated on how to stop her.
Could be a couple of things 1) Could be the litter disagrees with her. Some cats are really fussy over their litter, and if she's in pain going to the bathroom isn't going to be fun. Check with your vet 2) Could be a territory/stress factor. If this is a new development, if anything 'new' has changed either in routine or in her 'territory' itself she could just be stressed over it 3) She may just want another litter box. It's usually recommended Number of cats +1 in terms of how many litter boxes you generally need (it does vary from household to household. . but if someone is ambushing her by a litter box she's not going to want to go near it).
I have Litter Genie, I like it except the price on refill bags. Do you have some good hack for replacement bags? I tried to recycle grocery bags, but it didn't work out.
I just use a kitchen bag and roll it a little; it doesn't get completely full, but it works. Floppycats also has an article suggesting several alternatives: www.floppycats.com/litter-genie-or-litter-locker-refill-alternative.html
Can you recommend a brand of wet cat food and dry cat food. My cat's poop stinks so bad and I cleaned the litter box everyday and use a high quality litter. I'm thinking it's their diet. I feed them. Rachel Ray cat food. I know it's not the highest quality but I can't afford top quality but I would like a better quality that I can try. I stopped giving them wet food because it seemed to make it worse, but I'm willing to try a better quality food if you have any suggestions. Thank you
Can you review the best dry cat food for cats with sensitive stomachs? I give my cats soft food during the day but sometimes a little hard food before bed in case I get up late. I have a new cat that has some stomach issues and I don't want to upset her tummy
I plan to do a video on the best cat food for sensitive stomachs soon! In the meantime, here's an article on the subject: cats.com/best-cat-food-for-sensitive-stomach
I’ve been trying to figure out why the litter smells so bad we use the disposal litter boxes and I put a new clean disposal litter box with new litter arm n hammer multiple cats litter and I can smell urine all the way out the bathroom where we have the litter box. Mind you we live in a apartment so we don’t have any other place to put the litter box so the smell Lingers out into the living room. Even with a clean litter box… I’m thinking maybe it’s the cat litter mat? And how often do we clean the cat litter mats?
About 5-6 months ago, I started using Dr. Lisa Pearson's recipe for my cats' food. Bo and Penny look Soooo good. so silky and happy, and less than half of the poop. they are glowing, I kid you not. The litter boxes do not stink like before. DO NOT FEED DRY FOOD! Or do, but it will make your cats sick in the long run. I cant afford to feed commercial wet food, but chicken thighs cost $1.99/l;b or less, which is cheaper, if you really want to feed your cats what they need. look it up.
I wish I could find them that cheap. I'm trying to find a place to source them in bulk (I'd rather do bigger batches in bulk and store than a batch every week) and not being able to find an agreeable price for a decent amount is one reason I haven't switch our two over from the canned wet food we're using. (Not having adequate storage space is the other currently).
Baking soda? Plain ol’ baking soda. Is it a bad idea for me to be adding it to my clump litter? Is it even helping? Normally just add a heavy dusting any time I add litter or replace it.
Are there wipes that are safe to use to wipe the litter box in between thorough washes? I use a double-bottom litter box with wood pellets and I'd love an easy way to clean the litter box after throwing away the sawdust in the bottom part. I wash the whole thing once a week but it'd be nice to give it a swipe every other day or so
As Cherry suggested, I also would advise using a basic baby wipe. I've also used biokleen's Bac-Out cleanser, which is has enzymatic cleansers and is supposed to be safe for cats.
Our cats have only ever been inside/outside felines. We've been fortunate to have not needed litter boxes much past the time when they were around six months of age - or there abouts. We live in a country where there is no natural predation that can harm cats, other than perhaps other cats. Dogs must be chained by law on a lead while be taken on a walk, but that must be rarely enforced because dog owners allow their dogs to run free at the park and on local playing fields. Our first cat, tigger, a tortoises shell female, was a frisky fighter so I guess that she went wherever she felt like but we never knew. Even now, Lenny, nearly three must go somewhere but we don't know where. I.'m uncertain where they do their business actually but perhaps it's in ours or a neighbours seldom cultivated vegetable garden. They, the neighbours, that is seem not to be green thumbed, mind you, neither are we, but generally the property is kept clean and tidy. Before we got our first family cat, gardening was unpleasant because neighbourhood cats used this for their lavatory, but when our first cat we owned showed up on the scene things changed-no more pooping in our garden. Ours must have used the neighbours garden, but they've never mentioned this to us so peace prevails. Thank goodness!
I think it must have been fate that brought me to this page. I have 3 cats. One cat is 14 years old and the other two are a year old. I love them, but battling litter odor is getting to be a big problem. Because the 14 year old has health problems, he stays inside now. Leaving 3 cats to use the litter box. I have always had a very fresh, clean smelling home. Well, not anymore. I add baking soda to the litter but I still smell the strong ammonia smell from the litter box, even though it is thoroughly cleaned. This is bothering me and my son. I need help. Please send me your suggestions. I’m going to look at the link provided and see if I can find better products. Thank you.
I’ve tried every litter and several automatic boxes (I had 5 cats, now 4). The ScoopFree automatic litter box with crystal litter is the best for multi-cat households. I switched from scoopable clay litter when I read the dust gets in the cat’s lungs when they dig.

@@anamaxa Maybe if there was some sort of *dry* enzyme cleaner you could add, but the water content itself would be a problem for almost every product out there, including clay. If you tried to soak it, the granules would break down and turn into sludge. You may be able to reuse that sludge and turn it back into granules, but I'm not familiar enough with the manufacturing process to say how that would work.
Surprised you didn't mention anything about enclosed catboxes. The one I use latches on each corner, with a little swinging door the cat walks through, and a pretty hefty carbon filter up top. Does wonders for keeping the smell under control.
The problem is that it keeps the odor out of your breathing air but locks it into your cat's bathroom. So the smell is definitely still there. It's just that only your cat gets the brunt of it.
@@AllAboutCatsYT Let 'em sit in there and think about that monster they just created for a bit eh? All joking aside, good point. Just gotta keep it cleaner more frequent then so they don't bask in it I suppose.
Geeze. Our two are on a grain free wet food (I'll get them to raw eventually, don't have ths space to store a good sized batch at the moment) and most of the time their poo doesn't smell. . .occasionally though. . .goodness, if Dry food is even worse I'm glad we started at wet! Our newer cat's pee is definitely pretty pungent, but its likely because he's still intact (Vax boosters are next week, than we set the date for THAT). . .our other cat's pee doesn't smell at all with the petco litter we use.
@@Sam-fg9lf It's probably their generic store brand. It's pretty decent, though I would say initial pours can in fact be dusty. . .we sometimes find paw prints around the litter box. It does clump very nicely though.
I guess it's a matter of preference. They have it in a bin and you scoop your cat litter in a container they provide or a cat litter container you bring It Clumps Very well and put a mat just under the entrance to catch the litter on their paws. You'll get that no matter what you use. I have been using it for 10+ years
Sadly, none of these would work with my 2 year old shorthair female. She pees standing up, the pee sprays right over the side. I've tried boxes with higher sides than any shown here, and it results in a huge mess every time. The only solution was a very tall (sides actually taller than she is), top-entry box. She's happy to climb in, do her business, and jump out. Yes - the sides need cleaning regularly, but the pee stays in the box.
I clean my cats litter box daily twice, I wash the litter boxes every month and I put new litter in every month. Both my cats are fixed and having to smell the litter when I walk into the room is disgusting.
Just wanna say thanks for ur litter robot video it convinced me to get one and i love it, got an awesome deal on a litter robot 3 connect only paid 200$ 👍 best investment in my cat owning life
We are litter box training kittens and it is making me a little crazy. I am up to five litter boxes because the female of the litter will lay in the box and not let others use it. I'm hoping as they get older it will get easier. But right now I'm scooping multiple times and day trying to keep the smell away.
A very inexpensive aid for the litter box and odors within the box is Baking Soda! It is not offensive to my felines and I have used it for years. It does not smell but it does absorb nasty odors. I find my cats did not like the "aroma" of litter with a deoderant. Personally, I find them offensive as well--
8:11 this is what i do for my own diet. Exactly what you said is what I've experienced. Cutting out plants and getting zero fiber has completely changed my digestion for the better. I don't fart, my poops are smooth as fuck, and I poop much less because my body absorbs food much better when its plant-free. PS - I'm a human

Thank you so much for watching! How do you keep the litter smell down in your home? Please share your top tips in the comments!
@@whiteknightcat Great observations. Thank you!
@@whiteknightcat Great comment. I did the same. Because you can see the dirt & hair balls, it makes you clean the floor more often.
@@scottfw7169 Group elimination? OMG! LOL

Pretty sure that's what I've used for my bunny for years. The pellets are....about the size of the end segment of your pinky, yes?
I used to like pine pellet litter as well, but now it stinks. Not sure what is going on.
@@KatarinaS. how do you clean the litter box with pine pellets?
@@ColorMeConfused29 did you start using a different brand? Do you use equine or feline pine? Have you noticed this change on multiple bags of the pellets or just a single bag? It could be you got a bad batch, it is a natural product and can vary from bag to bag.
We rotate litter boxes to give each litter box time in the sun each day. We remove solids then place in full sun. This neutralises odour very effectively.
This is so smart…loved my litter robot but it stinks as is after a year 😢
She’s absolutely right about the automatic litter boxes. Keeping them clean are definitely a chore. Something like the Tidycat Breeze is so much better and easier to keep clean if your cat will use it.
That stuff is EXPENSIVE.
Ever Clean, deep litter box and litter Jeanie for 3 yrs now. Perfect combination.
Thank you! You briefly touched on odor controllers can be problematic for cats health. It’s my understanding that enclosed boxes combined with airborne dust particles (of both litter and odor controlling agents) is a particularly bad combination for cat health.
I open a window frequently for fresh air. That keeps the air more pleasant.
I have four cats and highly recommend the arm and hammer slide! Used with a litter genie for disposal I feel like I never smell the boxes in my home.
Do you know if it’s safe? Like it doesn’t have cancer causing agents?
that Litter-Lifter is awesome. i really didn't realize type of scooper matter until i got one. i'm able to easily pick up little break off pieces without them falling back in.
Thank you for the tips!! I hate having to keep my cats litter box in my room, but these tips made the smell less strong.
Thank you for the suggestion.
My tip is to switch to PINE LITTER. I scooped clay for 30 years. I will never go back. Now, I sift pine and I spend $5 for a 40 pound bag!!
It's a good idea!
This is definitely my future plan! Gonna try it in a few days and hopefully they take to it!
Did you find a good scooper to use with this? Mine still smells bad pretty quickly!
Tractor Supply?

The highest form of praise! Thank you!
Have 4 stainless steel xlg boxes myself. Smells n bacteria will never seep into them therefore having a forever litter box
@@begoodbebetterbeblessedix3766 Right? But I need one that's 20" or shorter as the second box inside a cute cabinet.
@@tiffanyodacrem5969 I am not having three litter boxes in my one bedroom apartment. Two is good and I clean them once a day.
Edit: the litter box
Look for a sifting litter box.
@@howellomaha thank you so much!
You leave them alone for a couple days at a time? How do they get fed?

I use sustainably yours litter with a similar litter box like tuft & paw & a mat & it’s been great ! T pleasing no smell & no tracking
I have had too buy deep litterbox cause my cats dig like they are digging to China sending some litter over to the floor
I love that cat pillow.
Not yet! Thanks for mentioning it.
Fresh step, outstretched I've found to smell the best. Unfortunately my husband insists the arm and hammer one he buys is the best one. But I smell it all day even when its been scooped. So I'm trying to find a solution that would make us both happy.
Definitely a healthy diet is the key. Grain-free, and especially no GMO corn
I have found that in Australia the wee kitty eco litter has been the game changer as someone who doesn't use clay based litter
Nice!
Still waiting on the comparison of non-clay clumping litters, Mallory!!!❤❤❤
Have you tried CatSpot coconut clumping litter? I've been using it for a while and think it's great. It clumps hard and really controls odor (with regular scooping and cleaning, of course). Unfortunately, it is expensive, but worth it if you can afford.
This has been helpful - thank you!
I have the litter box inside of a larger plastic box. It also helps to stop litter going out of box
Thanks for sharing.

I tried the worlds best cat litter too and it smells bad , going back to clay litter
Thoughts on wood pellets for litter? I’ve been using it for years now.
Pretty good! Personally, I don't use them because I find the pellet scatter a little annoying and haven't found a sifting litter box that really works for me (nor does scooping seem very easy), but the odor control is great, and they're so cheap!

My vet says to avoid baking soda or products with baking soda because it is irritating to your cat's eyes.
Yuck.
🤔
Thank you
You had mentioned canned food for cats. Which brands do you recommend?
We have a whole video on that! ruclips.net/video/dDJLsqWn9Lc/видео.html
Thank you
Hello. I love your videos. Can you tell me if the iPrimio stainless steel box that you recommend it the teflon coated one? Thanks so much.
Thank you. This is helpful. So we have Three cats and two litter boxes. However; one of the cats will pee on clothes, bath mats and blankets.
She has access to the litter, but I'm getting frustrated on how to stop her.
Could be a couple of things
1) Could be the litter disagrees with her. Some cats are really fussy over their litter, and if she's in pain going to the bathroom isn't going to be fun. Check with your vet
2) Could be a territory/stress factor. If this is a new development, if anything 'new' has changed either in routine or in her 'territory' itself she could just be stressed over it
3) She may just want another litter box. It's usually recommended Number of cats +1 in terms of how many litter boxes you generally need (it does vary from household to household. . but if someone is ambushing her by a litter box she's not going to want to go near it).
@@hallaloth3112 thank you.
@@hallaloth3112 Ideally you should have 3 or even 4 litter boxes. Your poor cats!
Thank you for your help.
I have Litter Genie, I like it except the price on refill bags. Do you have some good hack for replacement bags? I tried to recycle grocery bags, but it didn't work out.
i’ve seen adapters on amazon for the grocery bags to fit better in the litter genie! i believe i’ve also seen target brand refills for litter genie
I just use a kitchen bag and roll it a little; it doesn't get completely full, but it works. Floppycats also has an article suggesting several alternatives: www.floppycats.com/litter-genie-or-litter-locker-refill-alternative.html
thanks for this info

Mind you we live in a apartment so we don’t have any other place to put the litter box so the smell
Lingers out into the living room. Even with a clean litter box… I’m thinking maybe it’s the cat litter mat? And how often do we clean the cat litter mats?
Hi MALLORY, HAVE YOUR. SWEETIES TRIED HARDBALL CAT LITTER ? ITS NEW. COULD YOU DO A REVIEW ON THAT, PLEASE.
No, not yet! Putting it on the list. Thanks, Roxanne!
I wash the whole thing once a week but it'd be nice to give it a swipe every other day or so
I use baby wipes, I figure if they are safe for babies they'd be safe for cats
As Cherry suggested, I also would advise using a basic baby wipe. I've also used biokleen's Bac-Out cleanser, which is has enzymatic cleansers and is supposed to be safe for cats.
@@purrplecherry Thank you!
Would you recommend a plug in odor neutralizer/freshener?
No. They aren't even healthy for your use.
No.
I have an air filter fan that I keep in the same room as the litter box.
Not really-for one, they cover, rather than neutralize, odor, and secondly, they might be harmful to your cat, depending on what they're made of.
Could you tell me what kind of trash can you used in the video?

I've been wondering if it would be possible to clean and recycle the litter using a enzymatic cleaner by soaking.
Hmm, curious question. What kind of litter are you thinking of? Most litter would disintegrate after being soaked.
@@AllAboutCatsYT I think it would depend on the type of enzyme.
@@AllAboutCatsYT I think clay litter would work since it is a mineral.
@@AllAboutCatsYT "almost" is the key word here. There would have to be R&D
@@andy.bernard Exactly. Covered litter boxes aren't always bad, but you do need to make sure they're at least as clean as an uncovered one. :)
I use cat litter from PetCo. It is $10.99 for 30lbs. No dust and clumps nicely. I have used it for Years.
What’s it called
@@Sam-fg9lf It's probably their generic store brand. It's pretty decent, though I would say initial pours can in fact be dusty. . .we sometimes find paw prints around the litter box. It does clump very nicely though.
I guess it's a matter of preference. They have it in a bin and you scoop your cat litter in a container they provide or a cat litter container you bring
It Clumps Very well and put a mat just under the entrance to catch the litter on their paws. You'll get that no matter what you use.
I have been using it for 10+ years
@@starlightflores it’s petcos generic brand?
@@Sam-fg9lf it's Pet Co I'm not sure. But for the price you can't go wrong
No matter how clean, I won't touch the box, scooper, etc, without gloves. And I use a mask if scooping or changing it.
Me too!
I clean my cats litter box daily twice, I wash the litter boxes every month and I put new litter in every month. Both my cats are fixed and having to smell the litter when I walk into the room is disgusting.
your orange cat is so cute
Yes, he is! Thank you! ☺️
Just wanna say thanks for ur litter robot video it convinced me to get one and i love it, got an awesome deal on a litter robot 3 connect only paid 200$ 👍 best investment in my cat owning life
That's really cool! I'm so glad you like it.
I use unscented litter and clean it. Scoop out the poop and urine and it will not smell.
We are litter box training kittens and it is making me a little crazy. I am up to five litter boxes because the female of the litter will lay in the box and not let others use it. I'm hoping as they get older it will get easier. But right now I'm scooping multiple times and day trying to keep the smell away.
I clean my mom's cat litter alot. That's how it smells good.
