- We got the Sportster running! I wanted to make the 2004+ motor run like a normal Harley and I think we got it!
Disclaimer: This is just an experiment for my own purposes. If you try some of these things and blow your motor up, its on you. Only let someone who knows what they are doing work on your bike!
Great video, no excessive rambling or unnecessary music ect.
Sportsters,,, Ironheads and Evos ....the best HD's!
Just some helpful advice on installing the intake. Some grease on the seal makes it easier for them to evenly fall into place without any pulling or stretching on the material. Also before torquing down the flange bolts, you're gonna want to mount the carburetor to the engine with the backing plate bolted to the motor. That way the intake will be aligned correctly before running the flange bolts all the way down. Without doing so, the intake can eventually crack. Lastly, the flanges need to be ran down evenly, or it could result in them warping and having intake leak issues. Just trying to help.
great video i love watching these types of videos as i am currently working on my 1988 sportster 1200 that i am hard tailing, watching channels like this one gives me more InSite as to what direction i want to go with my build.
Your videos are awesome and very helpful. Thanks for making them!
Hi there mate. Thankyou for the really great walk through video. Mi friend and I have been up against the same Tom foolery ignition trouble and looking to do the same. Now we know the solution. Many thanks and look forward to seeing the follow up. Best wishes, Jase.
I have a question If you don't mind answering it about the size was The veos... thanks for a great video and your time
Just found you.
Great video. No BS just taking care of business. Thanks.
Hey Man, This is fantastic, Just learned a hell of a lot, I'm running a Twinky 1450 and i have a new cam cone and kit for Dyna 2000i, no more sensors and all the shit that goes with em. YeeeHaa.
Hey great video, so do you tdc only front cylinder and hook wiring up as in video and it rumbled?
Thanks dude. You're the man.
Exactly the content i'm looking for in awhile. Cheers from Guadeloupe (French West Indies). 🤜🏼🤛🏼
i have been working on my 1988 sportster 1200 and thank god it's not fuel injected but doing a lot of upgrades and the ignition is going to be one of them,,great video 👍
A simple 'stand alone' ignition is the thunderheart one - it has preset maps and you can 'write your own.' if you want to, it also works with the crank sensor to eliminate the inaccuracies of cam driven timing ... it's cheap too !
Very impressive man!! Learn a ton. Love the channel! Keep it up
awesome, Thanks for watching!
Great video. Wow man, the commentary and the thought process made complete sense. The VOES would have escaped me, but you nailed it. Thanks for posting this sort of content. I’m in the market right now and this is precisely why I’m looking for a 99-03, plus the rigid mount. Thanks again.
It was kind of fun to figure out but If I ever build another sportster it will pre 03. Way easier to deal with.
Nice work Chuck! Will do that to mine!
Do you have an extra cover I could buy so I can do this to my bike?
Great video ! could i put a points/condenser plate in there instead of the electronics ? .
I had that (THAT EXECT BIKE) in my garage a few years ago. I recognize the turd on the cam cover anywhere. I didn’t know what to do with it since it was an 04 so I sold it to a guy in Charlotte. I like what you’ve done with it man. If you want I can send pictures of what it looked like when I had it
Haha cool, I bought it from a guy in Charlotte. Yeah, send me a picture.

I would like to eliminate the electronic ignition which seems to be very fallable to the old reliable points and condencer ignition system for a 2005 sportster 1200. Is there a way to get the points cam and a standard coil. This new stuff seems to be way over engineered. I like simple and works!
That’s what I’m going to try to do
Can i get the model number for the voes? Just want to make sure im matching up. Stoked to find this as my tssm went out. Found a 98 cover and running twin tec 1005 on my 2005 883
What cam cover did you use? Is it off a buell? What year can cover? I’m doing this same thing today.
-98
What ignition coil did you use and where did you get that black piece the module sits on?
Good man! Simplifying electronics takes no small amount of thinking through; this is a 2004.....now imagine the rubbish my late model Piaggio scooter needs to function?! Fortunately my 1995 FXD is reverse engineerable all the way back to points....not that Id want to do that. Rubber Sportsters are worth the effort IMHO lovely bikes. Best from NZ
At its core the rubber sportsters are the same as all of them. Just had to get rid of some unnecessary "upgrades", as the factory calls them.
Finally found the correct Cam Cover and excited to convert it over. Do you happen to have a complete Wiring Diagram perhaps that I can follow please? I just want the bike to run. No turn signals or horn needed. Thanks in advance!
I think I pout up a wiring diagram at some point in the video.
Hello from the UK, I am building an 89 Evo in a Ironhead frame, did you use the stock coil as I have heard that the Compu-Fire ignition is Ohm sensitive. Great Video
Have a look at rawhide cycles they use a mechanical advance retard unit and a pick up with a 5 ohm coil 👍all electronic ignitions need to be matched to the coil👍
So do you like just use a system for a 2004 in earlier on my 2006 I'm trying to figure out which which ignition system forget can I just get one of them hundred dollar ones for a 2002?
I have bought three -98 cam covers and none of them have a open cone or all the journals. What am i doing wrong? No one seems to have the right answer. Thanks
I got mine off of eBay, but I made sure to study the pictures first to be sure it had all the required attributes.
@@ChucksCycles dud more research its a 98a witch came off beulls, they had the oil journals before the sportsters. Thanks for your videos, they have helped me alot.im doing a 08 to carb the same way
@@billynalley8357 Cool, Im glad you found the right one, If I remember right mine was a 98a also.
Nice work brother ,and thank you for being a oathtaker . 🇺🇸
Thank you! and thanks for watching.
@@ChucksCycles yea man , we gota stick together . ever in west tn holler brother 👊
Great video. What coil and voes did you use?
Hey man awesome vid, I have a 2007 efi sportster 1200 and I plan on converting it to a carb could I use the same cam cover on it?
When you installed the intake manifold, the rubber seals looked wet. What did you use on them? Some sort of oil?
I like to use some silicone spray just to ensure that the seals move into place and dont roll.
@@ChucksCycles someone told me to use dawn fish soap. I guess it didn’t work too well because I think I still have a slight leak. I thought it was interesting that you tightened the bolts down without having the carb on it.
Hi! What type of worktools you used in min 26:01 (the yellow one) thank you
Minuti 26:48 the little yellow
I like the big steaming pile of $h!+ somebody sharpie'd on the stock cam cover. Love the cam cover cut down as well. Very informative and a great vid!
Yeah, the turd seemed to fit the bike well so I left it. HAHA
hi man what about the lights ? how you make the lamp and light works with this ignition?
I can’t find that cam cover anywhere there ones I find don’t have the oil channels
Chuck is da man! Nice work my friend
Is there an old style cam cover fit on a 2017 883 sportster i know ill have to get a slotted cam to drive the points . Thanks i only have a crank sensor on this 2017 model and id like not to have to buy an expensive stand alone ignition ..thanks in advance
Ive done a carb conversation on mine. its a 2015 sportster xl1200 with canbus etc. There's an easy way to do this im using a Daytona twin tec ignition. It works with your stock crank sensor for trigger and uses stock map sensor for the timing adjustment under load conditions. Got rid of stock wiring BCM, ABS module etc etc. Daytona unit is very easy to wire if you know what u r doing.
@@noallegiances8676 thanks a million I'll sure look it up👍👍👍👍👍
nice work.. how it's been running since you did this video?
can you please post the names of those special tools you used? the depth meters and all those stuff.. what coils are you using, is it single fire or dual fire?
The guy has been riding it ever since, he says its doing well. I made the depth tool and then used a standard dial indicator.
Excellent video
would this work on a 2015 sporster seventy two?
Thanks for the références parts, and in the same idea, will it be possible to convert it for a much older "point" ignition? i know it could sound silly, but, as defective at it is, point ignition does not suffer from electromagnetics interferences...
Yes, you could put a mechanical advance and points in the cam cover. I dont see why it wouldnt work.
Hi BIG UPDATE : i tried to do the same operation, confidend about what i would find on my 2006, and unfortunately, mine had cams with no hole in an no dent for the ignition module...
I will use that as an excuse to put new cams in it but for some peoples it can become a dealbreaker, so probably the 04-05 get the older style cams, but my 06 has not the same luck.
Excellent video! I am thinking of picking up an 04 1200C, with a bad crank sensor I believe. Would be great to eliminate it all. Hell, maybe even points...lol.
Yeah, points would work well
Excellent video, thanks so much for all the concise detail, we have just replicated your idea on my son's 2007 in New Zealand- I have a question - did you leave the TSM and ignition module on the bike after this ? Can they still be used to power the lights and indicators for example, or do you need to rewire the whole lot? thanks
Thanks! I was building a chopper so I didn't have a TSSM or ignition module. No turn signals, etc. And I built my own simplified wring harness. I'm not sure if the absence of certain sensor signals will confuse the TSSM or not. The whole idea was to be able to get rid of all those computers.
@@ChucksCycles yes I am not sure either - we will continue with the project and I will keep you posted- it sure is a crazy system that they have put on a bike that was so simple - which is part of the charm of a Harley Davidson - space shuttle technology has ruined a great concept- thanks once again - your technical expertise is much appreciated
@@ianfitzwater7516 I second that. What they have done to harleys and continue to keep doing really puts me off.
@@ChucksCycles by chance do you have a draw out of the wiring schematic you used? I have an 01 sportster that I’m rewiring from scratch and it would be a real game changer if I had a reference that matches my bike. I’ve looked everywhere
@@taylorsippy6638 I put up a schematic in the wiring video. Check out the build series on my channel.
I am new to the newer bikes always had a shovel with basic kick only no signals . I recently purchased a 89 sportster and did not realize they had a control module and started tearing into to find out the control module is missing is there away around that
Just get a stand alone ignition module like I did. Ultima, Dyna S, etc…. Just like a if you were putting electronic ignition in your shovel. These do not need the stock module.
@@ChucksCycles awesome thank I have looked and looked and you are the only channel I found with the info I need look forward to more videos
Hi may i know what rigid rear end did you get? Thanks!
Led Sled
I live in Kingsport I work on Evo stuff do you know any one that does machine work around here
I will once I get my machine shop running.
Nice work.
Wow… this is way to much! Ive been wanting to convert my 2016… but im not buying cases and all this wild stuff haha!
All you got to swap is the cam cover, give it a go.!
Thanks dude. I learned a lot.
Yup! Got it, thanks!
I'm trying to find this cam cover so I can do the same however I can't find one if anyone can help that would be great or if someone has 1 for sale
I'm not convinced that this cam cover actually exists. None of the 25230-98 cam covers that I've found have the oil passages.
What about the 2014
What about the oil in cam chest won’t it Leah not having a seal
what seal are you talking about?
It looks like there no seal to keep the oil from getting in points area
@@dannyarendall5233 the seal is there, it has a metal case.
Don’t they make a waaaaaay simpler way to
Do this? Like a stand alone setup like they do for twin cam motors that just has a small
Module ?
I couldn't find one.
@@ChucksCycles I would think there has to be one somewhere
Yes. A company called thunder heart
Does anybody know where I can find one of these cover? I have an 05 xl1200c but I've scoured the internet for a cover like this but no luck. Am I over looking it somehow or are they just hard to find? Thanks!!
I think the cam cover is actually from a buell and has the ending of "98a" rather than "98"
"of course I'm keeping track where they go" 😂
Good vid.thanks
Im gonna do this to 2013 "72" that I'm gonna turn into hardtail chopper. Already found this bitchin gas tank I'm gonna mod. I wish I would have known that I was gonna down the chopper life I would have just bought a carb. bike from the start. But such is life and just keep going with it. Gonna be the most badass ugly chopper you have ever seen. Haha
Cool, good luck, thanks for watching. If you have any questions I’ll try to help if I can.
@@ChucksCycles did you just ebay your cam gear cover?
@@TheDorkKnight23 Not yet
I figured that I'd give some information to you that might help. Gixxer Foo has a video, about changing from fuel injected Harleys to carbureted. You might see if that helps you toward this modification.
@@ChucksCycles,
On that note, I was curious about a couple things, one being from his comment. Beside simplifying it, what is the purpose of doing all of this? I just wanted to be clear about it. Also, can it be done with fuel injected models? A buddy of mine just bought a 2015 Sporty. I don't know that he'd be able to do this, but if he found the help, I'm just wondering if it's possible and what the motivation is, for doing it.
Do you have an Instagram , wanting to do this to my bike just looking for some guidance
yeah, chuck_l86
Excellent video.
Thanks, it was definitely a learning experience.
