  • Welcome to The Larson Garage!
    Today we're diagnosing a wobble in a rear wheel, is it a bent rim or another bent axle shaft on the Dana 44? We'll tear into the rear axle to find and fix the issue.

    Excellent video! I've got a 98 Toyota 4Runner two-wheel drive and I suspect that I've got a bent rear axle. Your diagnostic is crystal clear the way you explain it and show it in the video. Now I know where to start, thank you thank you thank you

    My Honda wheel passanger side bounces at 60 mph . I changed the axle but not the half shaft. I changed the control arm and links and joints shocks struts OEM , alignment. Nothing helped I didn't change the wheel hub spindle. Or the half axle. But jacking the car up then giving the car gas I see the wheel jumping. It looked like the axle half shaft. At the time I didn't no about the half shaft part I thought it was the axle. I bought the axle then put the old half shaft. Still bounces. The parts I changed was time to do that anyways it wasn't a waist like that. But. What do you think is could be the hub wheel adapter or half shaft. I guess I need to buy the whole spindle first. Cause it's cheaper but. Doing so and it not fix it then the half shaft is 250$. So I'm stuck. What do you think. The garage keeps saying the camber is off . Need a bolt. It with the vibration or something broken over there on that wheel they don't know about. Could be causing the camber to be leaning inward . Cause the tire is sitting half contact. Still. Something def bent

    I'm not nitpicking here, but I'm wondering why you chose white lithium versus high temperature axle grease? The reason I ask is, I know that white lithium degrades over time due to the carrier oil evaporating leaving a dry chunky paste. That seems to me to be a possibly of metal wearing. That being said, an inquiring mind would like to know.

    • @thelarsongarage
      @thelarsongarage  2 года назад +2

      Hi Brian, thanks for the question! I used white lithium grease on the seals because I've been told that it will "break down" and mix with the gear oil, where axle or chassis grease won't break down. It's mostly just to keep the seal lubricated during the assembly process so the seal isn't rubbing dry on the axle shaft.

    • @briansutton7764
      @briansutton7764 2 года назад

      @@thelarsongarage Grease is a petroleum product so there's no reason to think that it wont break down in gear oil. Infact if you have a 4 wheel drive you grease the CV axle splines before slipping them into the gear box. That also uses gear oil. Just like your rear differential. The problem I see with lithium grease it becomes chunky over time. Well that's my aspect anyway.

      @@almoen5412 I've been working from 8AM to midnight for weeks on end. Im afraid It's is all that I can do to keep up with that. It takes hours to get anywhere using both hands, I cannot imagine trying to film and edit on top of that. My trade set is home improvements anyway. I learned fixing vehicles as a necessity in my younger days. Now I fix my own to avoid getting screwed. I have to pull the upper intake plenum on my 2005 Toyota 4Runner in the near future due to a bad secondary air pump. I have an inspection coming up at the end of next month and I still haven't been able to squeeze it in. I appreciate the offer though.

    So possibly the shaft worked itself out of position, and when you reinstalled it square and flush, it did away with most of the wobble.

    • @thelarsongarage
      @thelarsongarage  2 года назад

      I'm not sure it's possible for the shaft to get out of position the way the splines and bearings hold them in place, unless the shaft is bent

    • @giveme10feet
      @giveme10feet 2 года назад

      @@thelarsongarage But as you showed, the shaft was slightly bent. You did replace the bearing and reinstalled the shaft, now it seems most of the wobble is gone. Not a coincidence. I'm thinking we should check the wheel bearing (hub) nut torque first maybe if we have a similar wobble.

      @thelarsongarage wouldn't a bent axle just cause a camber issue and not necessarily a wobble? I am just picturing in my head if the axle itself is bent then the wheel is going to spin with no wobble but it will affect camber

  • @memine3270
    @memine3270 2 года назад

    Can a slight bent axle shaft cause a humming noise in back end? Noise that increases with speed. No shaking. Differential gears etc. Are fine.

    • @thelarsongarage
      @thelarsongarage  2 года назад +1

      It's possible, or a bent axle tube that's creating some sort of sideload on the wheel bearing. It could also be a pinion or carrier bearing starting to wear.

    Could it cause vibration as well in the road at 65 mph especially with a gooseneck hooked on. I have a ram 3500 2015

    • @thelarsongarage
      @thelarsongarage  2 года назад

      Hi Armando, it's possible, I would think it's more likely an unbalanced wheel or possibly a bearing causing the vibration. I wouldn't expect a shaft to bend under "normal" driving or towing conditions

    I have a question about a back axel on a truck and say if there was something wrong with the axel and say that person was touching the axel to see if there was something wrong can he get shock or burnt by it if the car was turn on with motor running?
    My friend has a Dodge truck and he's always crawling under it to see if it's damage and i'm just worry that he might get burnt or shock by it and really I don't know anything about car repair so I thought my friend would get hurt while the car was running. In your video here I was talking about in the middle section is where I was asking not by the tires where you fix the axel so that middle black cover where yours has red writing is what i mean by touching it while the truck is on running.

    • @thelarsongarage
      @thelarsongarage  2 года назад

      Hi Frosty Mike, the rear axle could get pretty warm after a long drive but generally not hot enough to burn you if you touch it. The exhaust would usually be the only thing that gets hot enough to burn you if you touch it.
      Unless you're working on wiring or an electric part there's usually no risk of getting shocked by touching any of the drivetrain.
