  • The ninja employed over 400 special weapons and tools to accomplish their missions, and the shuriken is undoubtedly one of the most famous. In this episode, we'll examine not just how the shuriken was thrown, but ninja techniques for throwing it with a string attached, and using it defensively. The ninja also devised various throwing techniques such as yoko-uchi, hon-uchi, and gyaku-uchi. We'll use cutting-edge science to examine their uses, and use the shuriken to draw closer to the ninja truth.

    I think it is pretty useless to kill someone except when they have poison on them. I think they are used like as distraction before pulling out the samurai sword to engage it is like how the romans legions used the javelin throw before engaging.

      They wre used as a distraction. Ancient black ops proved this on its review of a typical ninja assination attempt. When escaping from samurai, when they are about to draw their swords they would throw them as a distraction and then follow up with an attack of their own

      Well that's what ninja's were in real life. Assassins and spies. If you threw a couple of "poison darts" at a political figure which has a good chance to penetrate, you've done your job. Then you would use the leftover on yourself if capture was imminent. rofl

    • @cn4s490

      you're right it doesn't kill but it only gets injured but if it's poisoned it's a different story.
      they also throw knives, not just shuriken.
      if they throw a knife with great force, it will hit the head, throat and other places that will bleed a lot. it will definitely be deadly.

    They always get the overhead throw wrong. You don't throw it like a baseball pitch. You release the shuriken with the same leg and hand. So, right hand release, right leg forward on release. The overhead throw gets its power not just from body mechanics, but from simply releasing the shuriken from a high to low trajectory, where gravity helps it gain momentum.

    How did they keep the poison off their own hands??? Unless they dipped it in poison *after* retrieving it from their storage pockets (which they likely wouldn't have time to if they were using it on the run, which sounds like it was the main use case), they woulda had to have pre-dipped them and they don't have an obvious handle part to grab onto that doesn't contain a sharp edge that would need to be poison dipped.

    i think they missed the part that a shuriken doesnt and cannot necessary do an instant kill as it could barely cut no deeper that its contacting tip. however, a shuriken could cause a pain that distracts the victim opening an opportunity for the ninja to either attempt to create distance and run or dash in for a stab.

    I know it's not the
    "real deal" but on the movie enter the ninja the protagonist says when asked about how shurikens kill he said they are very sharp and if your good and you hit someone in the corner of your orbital eye socket it reaches your brain and drops you that way

    Stephen K. Hayes touches on the history of the shuriken in his book "The Ninja and their secret fighting art." They weren't often lethal, but instead thrown at the hands or face of an adversary, as to achieve the effect of an "invisible swordsman", slicing up the bad guy without being seen. Psychological warfare, yo.

    • @bryanmuster5662
      @bryanmuster5662 3 года назад +1

      It depends on the particular shuriken, how its thrown, and what it's aimed at. If a star hits straight on, sure it's gonna puncture and stick. If it's aimed to glance off someone's face, it would slice them open and then continue its trajectory off into the bushes, or wherever. Also, traditional shuriken were very sharp along the edges. This video we both watched wasn't super informative. I highly recommend reading Stephen K. Hayes' and Masaki Hatsumi's books on ninjitsu, they a great resource for historical info about ninjas and the part they played in Japan's history.

      @bryanmuster5662 You're pretty far off, with a lot of that; not unlike the people in this video, who seem to know almost nothing of historical shurikenjutsu. Take senban... a Togakure Ryu shaken... for example- They were pointy but not sharp along the edges, and were designed to cut and bounce out of that cut... meaning they didn't stick, and therefor, could not be plucked out and thrown back.
      All that said, historically, bushi used bo shuriken, almost exclusively. They hit much harder, were more difficult to see in the air, made a much deeper wound, were much easier and cheaper to manufacture, and were much easier to carry.

    I think shuriken are the least leathal thrown weapon in the world. Rather used to stun for a moment for escape because at the very most you might loose a eye or a minor cut.
    I think shuriken are so small to carry more. But the pocket stuff. I can see that being true. partial armor.
    The whole ninjas never kill bevause it was never documented....
    Why would assassination be documented. I think a true assassination would be along the lies of a cover up of our modern time. Making it look accidental or possible point the blame at a more suspecting enemy if the target.
    For kills in combat. I think its foolish to think its never happened ever simply because there is no documents.
    Samurai being shinobi I think is bit of both. Makes sense just another mission but shinobi training focus from youth.
    I think is possible. It would be beneficial to have a well trained spy rather than a samurai who's just happens to be a decent shinobi. And if samurai where shinobi... they definitely killed in combat if possible but never a major target... again politics. I just think it would be obvious if a ninja killed with a sword. No one claims the killing bunch of guards dead lol.. yeah. I think that defeats the purpose.
    Shinobi were just spys. Gather info. Create disorder. Kill if necessary. In that order of importance.

    I'm getting pretty good...check out my latest practice session: ruclips.net/video/ZXfssSJQ8FY/видео.html. Some definitely make good hand weapons, too; poisoning them would make them deadly...just be really careful, I guess! Mine deliver a devastating 2-inch wide cut when thrown--that'd make a bleeding wound for sure; and, sink 'em nearly an inch into tough plywood. However, I don't think it's going to kill someone outright...it'd be really distracting at best, and you could blind someone in one eye, have someone bleed to death, or perform an impromptu lobotomy at worst; it does look really cool when victims flip through the air, though.

    • @corinfletcher
      @corinfletcher 3 года назад

      @Jandy Win Bent? I don't know to what you're referring, but they're in perfect condition except for the blackening coming off from use at the points. The first one I got I hit a lot of rocks with, chipping the tips and bending them. With a little repair, it was still usable for quite a while, but I needed to get these as replacements. And, having gotten better by then, manage to hit the target more often. They're made with sword-quality steel and having one flat side makes them ideal for throwing in pairs.

    Square tsuba ninjato, dramatic posing and relaying on shuriken to finish off your opponent. All the usual clichés. Shameful display.
