Seki Sensei's smile in these videos always makes my day. You can tell he is having a lot of fun sharing his art.
I love watching masters share their knowledge, and the joy it brings them to share. Even with the videos where his knowledge is challenged by the comments, and his ability to instantly create a practical move at any situation
Sensei is true, all joy no ego.
Dude if I can I give you a container full of likes!!
"Every time you you hold that long blade against your enemy, you must remember the short blade that is pointed near your heart"... that itself sounds like a philosophy!
It's like something General Iroh would say! 😄
"Zuko.. Every time you hold that long blade against your enemy,
you must remember the short blade that is pointed near your heart."
"-I don't have time for your proverbs, uncle!"
"It's no proverb- LOOK!" *unsheathes handle blade*
@@clarkb1900 as an Avatar fan who bought the entire first season on DVD, this made my day!
I don't have Iroh's brain, but give a couple of years, I would have his stomach.
@@kairinase 😂
You can tell that Seki Sensei had a lot of fun with this episode
He almost had his hand stab at 3:06 but Seki san took the blade back but said nothing, it very nice to see martial art person who is refine to no pointing it out.
*3:03
That sageo swing at 5:10 was like an inch from Sensei's face. Such skill and control with the trademark wily wide smile! Both are incredibly talented.
The sheath trick of being long but housing a shorter blade reminds me of Rurouni Kenshin's Shinomori Aoishi character. He uses a kodachi when we first meet him early on but after Kenshin defeats him he starts practicing a two sword style that uses two kodachi...that he hides by making it look like he's carrying a nodachi only the base of the saya actually hides a second, tsuba-less kodachi instead.
you may already know this, but kenshin means "real sword".
First thing I thought of too! Hey that's just Aoshi's sword with extra features.
I've never seen a sword like that. It's pretty amazing.
👍
This weapon seems like something out of a dream. Its so beautiful
I immediately knew there was something special about that sword while Seki sensei was mentioning that he had helped design the handle. I paused the video and noted the very unconventional wrapping that didn’t extend to the kashira. I didn’t see that almost-tanto coming though! Should have expected it with the mention of the ninja connection.
I was reminded of a debate between other sword-tubers about the fictional bat’leth used by Klingons in Star Trek. Almost all agreed that it would endanger the user upon swinging because of the sharp points on both ends. Clearly it just requires training and respect, same as with that sword.
Functionally, it is reminiscent of my Scottish Claymore, where the handle is longer and it's end is used to bludgeon(armor or skull of a person), but in your case, the handle on your katana is used for thrust, cutting, and reverse thrusting, if you were to get inside of a person's guard.
I remember this sword. It was first used by Azumi the MC of the manga of the same name. It's later used by some nobody Elite Mook in the Raijuta arc from Ruroni Kenshin.
Holly smokes Shogo!!! That sword is for fight and at the same time clean you belly button. Thanks Seki Sensei for sharing generously your knowledge, I can tell you're a man who enjoy teach and learn from the different styles of learning that your students have. We love Seki Sensei!!
I must say that, as someone who trains with something similar to this sword, you can get used to swinging in a way that your waist is protected, and in some cases, it can help the flow of momentum to move in such a way and thus be to your advantage.
This is an amazing weapon and the possible techniques and moves are even more amazing. I have completely fallen in love with Asayama Ichiden Ryu 😍
Very cool sword! I would also love to see more Tessen videos in the future!
Seki sensei is a real well educated master .. i can see from his movement and always smiling attitude
Absolutely Brilliant 😊 How cool is that Katana 👍Take care. Stay safe 🙏
John and Kate
great video as always. much love, from brazil!
Sus enseñanzas son un verdadero tesoro
Wow, the all-in-one combo weapon :D
Man... I don't know if I'd have the stones to test that sageo block against a real katana...
I'm actually curious why the removable kurikata never became more common, it seems very practical!
So cool to learn about this modified katana, and that our ryuha actually trained with this. Seems like something you'd expect a ninja to carry!
I was engrossed throughout the whole video! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
this reminds me of a game called toribash. one of the dueling modes uses swords, but a bug made it such that the entire sword is considered sharp.
so the round starts and my opponent snaps into a stiff low guard position, the handle pressed right up against his abs. he then twists his torso to slash but then just falls over in two pieces
I wonder if this sword helped inspire the weapon the Rakuyo from Blood Born at all? Though I personally didn't see anything on the wiki at all, but seeing the sword in the video made me immediately think of it.
the first time i saw this type of sword was from a manga named "Samurai Deeper Kyo", held by Hotaru aka Keikoku, i never knew it exist in real life.
The best! I have started to incorporate teachings of Seki Sensei in my sons (7yrs) training.
This wakizashi reminds me of Aoshi Shinomori's dual kodachi from Rurouni Kenshin. His kodachi were each 1.47 shaku, and when they were both sheathed in the saya, the overall length was 4.69 shaku. It was designed so tightly that when both kodachi were in the saya, it looked like a nodachi. Such a badass covert set of weapons.
A sword like that seems almost like it would be more suited to a one-handed fighting style, varying into half-sword techniques as the battle dictates. It would make the short blade less of a danger to the wielder, in theory at least.
I am always intrigued by your videos on Japanese culture. I learned so much from them. Are you planning on doing a live video questionnaire with fans soon?
Shogo did a live video recently on his other channel.
I'd give anything to be able to sit down and speak with Seki Sensei. But my Japanese is atrocious. But I really enjoy these videos with the three of you. *Subscribed*
Cutting tatami itself isnt easy task. and seki sensei is doing that with that kind of sword in one try lol
This video is confirming that seki sensei has legit samurai swing
Great video 🙏
Nice Ninja Katana 👍🏻👍🏻
Awesome!!!!👏👏👏👍👍
So many facets and parts - like Frankenstein’s monster! 🗡️
What about the Shikomizue? (the sword famously used by Zatoichi the blind swordsman) Would be cool to hear Seki Sensei's opinion on it if he's interested...
Probably more information exists on the ninja side of swords as Shikomizue would probably be a "less" official self-defence and threatening Shirasaya to samurai or ronin caste.
My limited understanding is that the blind in feudal Japan typically used canes to navigate the world as is still done today, and that cane swords were not unknown in that time and place same as in medieval Europe. How common they were, I don’t know.
Also, to my (Western) eye, Zatoichi’s cane very closely resembles the unfinished, undecorated furniture put on katana blades for storage. Finally, Zatoichi’s unassuming manner would make most people he met for the first time not see his cane as potentially hiding a blade.
(I discovered Zatoichi while browsing late night TV many years ago. I consider Shintaro Katsu to be the “proper” Zatoichi.)
From what I know, shikomi-zue were used in general by people traveling around Edo period Japan as a way to defend themselves from bandits and robbers.
what unarmed combat styles does master Seki prefer, I'm curious?? master Seki is very difficult to read and anticipate. he really gives nothing up at all. even if I were to look at his face, it gives up nothing. no expression no blinking no unnecessary movement. exactly what I would expect from a truly dangerous man.
That was cool
Now thats a real shinobigatana!
This episode is interesting. Ninja is James Bond of the time
I suddenly had the image of Seki Sensei blowing through the sheathe to get the secret toothpick after a hearty meal.
Thing is you could use the weapon while still keeping one of the sheaths on, couldn't you? To get full length with the smaller blade or shorter length with a scabbard not to impale one's belly
Yes you can. I've actually never seen the "reverse bladed wakizashi" idea and the "wakizashi mounted as an uchigatana" idea both combined together before until this video.
I don’t know why they didn’t showcase it here but in the Japanese only channel they do actually use it like a spear lol
What a beautiful weapon
Kinda gotta say, the hidden knife in the hilt kinda puts a new spin on the old meme of "Ending him Rightly".
You just pull the "pummel" sheath off and throw it at them.
Failing that you can follow up by stabbing them with the knife.
Though, failing that too, you could then go into a iaido draw cut.
ooo Ninja! .... OOO!!! NINJA!!!
Hatsumi Soke has a similar katana with the shorter blade concealed with a normal length tsuka.
cool ninja weapons!
Great job men. If I used that sword I would probably end up doing seppuku.
Young elder Master teach awesome lessons
Very clever those Shinobi was & I see that Seki Sensei knows more about that Tanto/Wakizashi than he wants us to know...
That was cool 😎
I now understand where Bloodborne's Rakuyo Idea came from :o
Cool "kakushi buki" katana.
Theres been tons like that made back in the 80's.
If your ninja sword dont have a blowgun, snorkel, step ladder, hidden dagger, ninja star, climbing rope, u been ripped-off!
every time he uses someone as a demonstration i think of the extras on star trek that would die instantly lol. that katana is frikn amazing tho, thats awesome
Fun!
I'm wondering: If you leave the sword sheathed and only open the knife blade, wouldn't you basically have an improvised naginata/spear? That might give you really good crowd control capabilities against several enemies, or at least an element of surprise, to adjust your positioning.
If you come up with a sword fixer in a sheath, then it will be possible to use it like a short spear.
Really was scared to do the chiburi😂
The swiss army knife of japanese/ninja sword !
Question for Seki Sensei... Wouldn't it be better and less risky to use one handed techniques when using that sword? I feel like 2 hands using traditional kenjutsu movements might increase the risk of injury if you forget about the hidden tsuka blade.
It makes me think of the sword from
azumi
Excellent swordsmen ship confidence skill realizing the man is anything he does produces only the best of results by just simply protecting and defending one's self the mark battle to be the decisive factor striking from all positions being ready at all time all senses as one the way of the warrior and to put the enemy down without hesitation Mercy or restraint well done
So are the tsuka tanto and saya blowgun also parts of Asayama Ichiden ryu? And how is the kurikata attached (sliding dovetail?)?
No, only the Kurikata! It slides off when you pull it from the side!
What is this weapons name? @letsasksekisensei
I wonder about using that like a short naginata? You'd probably have to secure the main blade by means of the sageo, but it doesn't seem impossible by any means.
That was super cool
I wonder, would the sheathed sword work as a short spear with the handle knife? If anything, I figure you'd get quite a leverage on a cut if you hold it by the sheath
If the fight really get problematic you can do a quick sepukku in a pinch, with that pommel blade.
It's like a Swiss Army Sword 😅 so many functions....
ちなみにこの紐も『真田紐(サナダヒモ)』という絹を使った非常に堅牢な織り方で折った頑丈な紐です。
i love the vidos and i will i could be there in person
What I really want to know is that the original sword of a ninja? If so
How old is it?, who used it? , person or clan, who made it? Where was it used and or stored?
If this is a replica? When was this one made and by who?
Where is the original it's based on? Amd who made that one and where etc.
the most strategic weapon i’ve ever seen haha
Thank you for this video, which is even more interesting than usual. What is not exactly clera for me, how old is this sword? Is it antique or recently made in accordance with old teachings? And is there any documented evidence of it's connection with historical ninja?
Thank you for leaving a comment!
It was actually recently created by an Association that teaches Ninjutsu!
If the wakizashi blade were secured in its scabbard, the knife blade and long sheath could make a credible spear.
What people fail to understand about Shinobi, is that they really were just another type of Samurai until they became basically bandits in the Edo period. There were two provinces, whom had samurai who specialised as Shinobi. No offical record of Shinobi ever assassinating a target have been found, but we do know they were excellent scouts, had spy networks and were skilled in stealth and espionage. A good Sensei should always know a few Shinobi techniques.
Sincerely, a Korean martial artist.
Would it be possible to remove the end of the handle and use the weapon as a short spear?
I wonder if you still use the wakazashi without drawing the other blade. Perhaps it would've had a lock or something to keep the shorter blade sheathed so you can use the sword safely.
I had noticed too you could almost use it like a spear. Again, maybe something to lock the sword so it doesn't slip out. Sure is an interesting weapon. Not practical but if you're a ninja, it's something
Great video. I love this weapon. To me it means that the ninja were inventing such weapons long before the ninja fantasy weapons nowadays. In other words the ninja fantasy weapons were not original.
Episode of how to punish an opponent for simple mistakes would be great to see
Give it to Yushin-Sensei n see what he does with it too!
Thank you for the video.
This katana looks really uncomfortable to wield. I actually like the long sheath the most.
I think, between the long sheath and the way the katana is so uncomfortable to wield, it would probably only be drawn when absolutely necessary.
What if you kept the sheath and revealed only a knife effectively making it a short spear?
Fascinating sword!! Is there any documented instances or educated guesses of what kind of ninja mission this is useful for? The long sheath seems pretty cumbersome for solo indoors infiltration. But if it's a ninja group sneaking into a castle, it makes a lot of sense to have one person in the team carry this.
If you'll forgive me, it's more likely that a ninja disguised as a bushi might carry such a weapon. The idea of masked men breaking into castles by night is... more theatrical than historical.
@@RyanR-ty2nw "that a ninja disguised as a bushi"
It might be even more simple than that: a person can be a bushi (samurai) and a ninja at the same time.
Samurai did engage in espionage, following people covertly, etc. All that kind of activities.
Being a samurai is a social status. Being a ninja (shinobi-no-mono) is a job. They are not as clear-cut and distinct as people think and they are not mutually exclusive.
@ayrnovem9028 That's very well said. What I meant was... A shinobi disguised as a bushi other than himself. Or a bushi whom others didn't know was also an espionage agent. The point is- That's a big sword... or looks like one... and only a bushi would be like to carry something of that sort.
@@RyanR-ty2nw Haha true, that could be it. Though the sword's offensive capabilities is a bit unusual even for a one-off disguise mission, given the other many handy, concealable tools a ninja already has. The small blade would not be a hindrance when kept in its sheath, allowing for 2-handed grip for more strength, or longer reach for one-handed stabbing, as other comments have pointed out.
It could be a kind of everyday carry sword for someone who regularly needs to wear a longer katana, but maybe can't carry most of their ninja tools for some reason (e.g. to pass by checkpoints unnoticed? Maybe it was uncommon to inspect swords?). Also, said person would probably be more accustomed to fighting as a ninja than, say, as a bushi. So could be a ninja in bushi disguise, a bushi who's a ninja by night, a komusou who's also a ninja, maybe even a weapon merchant.
Another possible use could be in high-risk group missions like assassination or aiding a castle siege, where the chance of fighting multiple enemies is high. One ninja in the team could carry this sword for extra fighting power, similar to how some special force missions would require some soldiers in the team to carry specific equipment (e.g. big bolt cutter, explosives for door breaching etc.),
No documented case, but an educated guess: This could have been carried by a ninja if he were disguised as yamabushi, because yamabushi at the time often carried swords. It also could have been carried by a samurai's servant if the samurai himself was a ninja and brought his servant along with.
What's the history of this sword I'm interested in this
Whats Seki sensei thinks about Masaaki Hatsumi ?......... bujinkan is Iga ryu but is something left of Koga ryu whats he can sey any information about it ,??
👌💐
That's was amazing! ❤The sword was so interesting! I've never seen anything like it. Lo ed the mat cutting. I am sure I would have stabbed myself!😂
After watching this now I really wish that Fromsoftware make Sekiro 2 or Tenchu Remake.
i have seen a sword like that used as yari
Ninja themselves were akin to the CIA or FSB of their time so a weapon like this was probably used by someone of Samurai class or Ashigaru who was also a Ninja, as the Ninja was not a class in of itself. There could be Nin of various classes.
This sword is crazy, do you have any ninja kata with this awkward (to be honest) blade
You gotta be super careful not to accidentally stab yourself with that sword!
Going from the concept introduced by this sword, would there be any benefit to mounting a wakizashi length blade to a full length katana handle? In european swords (at least in a fantasy context), there is the concept of a "bastard sword", sometimes defined as a one handed sword blade mounted to a two handed longsword handle. Does Seki-sensei think there would be any benefit to applying this concept to japanese swords?
I want that sword
I would only hold it in one hand in order to avoid impaling myself. It should work with Messer techniques.
Hey look it’s lady Maria’s weapon the Rakuyo from bloodborne.
I'm surprised there wasn't a hidden throwing blade in the saiya.
Nice design, creative, but historically there were no Shinobi To.
Azumi sword
Yes from the Manga! But it was a real Katana size.😊
This ninja sword must be great for party’s lol
