I'm glad you chose NOS, just like in the thumbnail. Just remember to reinforce the floorboards, we all know what happens when the manifold pressure gets too high.
I would like to see a budget build between you both where you both buy the same car and build it your own way then go head to head on the track to see who has the better build and better time under 5k including the car
S2kandtheAnt is the man. Good on you guys for giving him the shout out. Also thanks for giving me a rabbit hole to run down with that supercharger idea. Never new about that option and now......
For reals. It would have been easy to test to see if the motor was receiving power, but they're not professional mechanics so they're still learning the proper procedure.
@@sigmaprojects I reserve the right to be wrong, but I believe that is a stepper/encoder motor. the computer likely communicates with the motor controller and tells it what it wants it to do. It may be more complicated to diagnose if so.
I gotta say this channel keeps surprising me. Not only do you guys go way beyond what other channels would do for a "6K car challenge", you source used parts and if they don't work you fix them! So many other channels would just go buy a new part, its awesome to see you fix door and column motors. Between major engine work on the BMW and now your rebuilding a supercharger instead of buying new. This is great content.
At first, I wasn't sure on the wheels...I thought they looked a little too retro...but after a few episodes, they have grown on me, and now I think they look great!
In many cars you can swap the gauges from the cluster without swapping the circuit board. So by swapping the original circuit board to the jdm cluster (if possible in your specific cluster) the screen writing swould return back to English.
Yep people have already said the knob is for volume, the key button disables the smartkey system. It's intended to be used as like a "valet mode", but it also preserves the car battery if you aren't driving often by preventing the car from doing it's periodic pinging for the smart key.
The key button is indeed for the smart key. I had the same on my 2008 prius. A little tip, dont park the lexus close to a key for hours at a time with smart key on. If the key is close to the car, it will keep sending a ping to the key every 30 seconds and kill the car's battery. That's why i eventually turned the smart key off for my prius when i had it. It left me stranded at a cabin in the woods.
For the steering telescope I had to replace a rubber like bung/stopper to get the telescopic movement functional again. So that stopper is used to push on/off against as the motor turns this threaded rod. Mine was completely disintegrated so I had next to no movement but could hear the motor turning, sounds like your rubber stopper is almost on its way out.
I used to work at Lexus and my father used to own an '04 LS 430, they are notorious for the telescopic steering column motor failure. My fathers was also worn out.
I've owned 40 cars and currently have a decent garage, 911, loaded g20 3series, cayenne gts, Amarok.... I miss my LS430 so much, mistakes have been made! The best car ever made...could just be.
The LS400 did have plastic gears, I owned one and fixed the same issue, wheel would telescope but would not go up and down. Open the side of the column and stick a ziptie along the plastic gears and its fixed!
The reason why the cluster is inverted is because it’s a pure Japanese part hence the language. It’s inverted because it’s supposed to be on a right hand drive side. I absolutely love this car it’s my dream to someday own. LOVE IT. People just don’t seem to understand me when I say this is my favorite car. Either this and/or the L (Long wheelbase) are gorgeous.
I'm enjoying following your build. I picked up an 04 LS with 15k original miles back in May. I'm about 2 months ahead and have done alot of the same projects and lowered it on Fortunes as well! Pick up a tech stream CD and dongle on eBay and disable that auto exit tilt/telescope. That's what kills it.
I have an LS430. Tilt motors are a known weakness. I've heard the auto tilt/tele can be programmed out by the dealer to save wear/tear. I personally set the wheel where I wanted it and pulled the fuse.
Are you guys planning on forging the Internals on the 3UZ for the Super charger? You can go with 1990-1994 LS400/SC400 Piston Rods which are the thickest OEM ones that can handle a bunch of power! Be careful of the thin rods on 3uz's! Love watching this build, The wheels are beautiful!
Just a tip: To get rid of that horrid greasy shine on the leather portion of the steering wheel, use a Mr.Clean Magic Eraser and lightly scrub the surface until it's matte. Make sure to wring often and clean the sponge out for best results.
The bottom 373km translates to "possible travel distance" so it is telling you how far you can go before you need to fill it up again. The one above translate to driver side and passenger side door.
Love the LS 👍...I used some special lithium grease from the Lexus dealer on the steering column gears which helped the motor run smooth and quiet and never had problems since. Overtime the grease disintegrates especially for this car since it’s from Florida, where’s there’s a lot of warm weather.
Send the supercharger out to get ported, I believe Jokerz performance does it on what looks to be a ford style oem unit you have. That way you can get the most out of it if you guys change pulleys
Perhaps the splines on the telescoping steering shaft built up some corrosion making it harder for the motor? Seemed to move more smoothly once it had a few runs back and forth
For my 95 sc300 it had the same problem and i was able to fix it with 2 washers on the gear. However, the steering motor for this car looks completely different.
Are you planning on replacing the connecting rods? The 3UZ rods are very light and can't take much more. Also, the cylinder walls are very thin. This is a bored out version of the original engine, 1UZ, that was in the LS400.
For the cluster, I’m fairly certain you can open them up and swap the faces. I’ve never done this on Lexus before, but it’s a really common thing in BMW
Button key disable the smart key , le knob adjust ext beep lock sound level and the tmps , hold it to reset abs "tpms" system. Btw the can speedo goes to 260 and the tom's one to 320
Smart key disable the lock button on the door, and the metal strip behind the handle that unlock the car before you pull the handle and require you tu put the key fod inthe ignition
it's likely the motor has over-current protection built in, and it's just pulling too many amps to shift the column. As lubricants wear off it will be harder and harder to push/pull it. Would explain why it works when it frees up a little.
Great video. Enjoyed seeing the steering wheel motor rebuild. So many RUclips channels just throw $$$, but you do things write and do them on a budget.
@Speed academy you could install Germany imported ls430 speed dail, it will also in kilometers and English. What you installed was the Japanese dail you can know it by the speed 180Km.
There is a small bushing connected to the screw that the telescopic motor turns in order to move the steering column. This bushing commonly wears out and causes the screw to squeak and bind. The bushing is very cheap to get from the Lexus dealer. Replacing this bushing should fix the telescopic steering function.
For the JDM cluster, use a google phone and switch to your camera and turn on Google Lens so it can translate for you live in time; To at least get an idea of what it says. I'm not familiar with these cars but if it has menus to scroll through there might a language menu option?
The "key" button turns on/off the keyless system for entry at the trunk/door handles and and the keyless ignition start/stop function. The ABS label is in reference to the plastic used to make the panel. The large knob is the keyless "buzzer" volume control, allowing for the beeping to be loud or silent when the keyless remote functions are used
On my evo when I put in a US cluster instead of a JDM one, I had to put a resistor off the speed senor or it would still read in kilometers. You might test it out on the road to make sure it's reading properly.
It is crazy how much that steering repair cost ....I had one and sold it just because of the problem. It had something to do with one of the worm gears inside. I was quoted $2000 to fix. I unloaded it
It's NOT a big "lose" for Lexus, nor is it anything like a BMW. I have a 2001 LS430 with well over 204k miles on it, and everything on it works flawlessly. including the steering wheel adjustments.
You can't switch the display between metric and imperial? My 1996 Intrigue could be switched. I've also driven cars that simply had both systems on the speedometer (though not elsewhere). I'm also surprised you resorted to a cluster from JDM car rather than one from a Canadian car.
I never understood the "sun visor" windshield tint. Maybe it's because I'm tall and that's directly in my field of view, but I don't understand why it's there. Living in Las Vegas, I am a huge fan of ceramic tint and plan to use "clear" ceramic tint everywhere, including the windshield, when it comes time to make my Datsun 510 purty 😋

A simple lever which releases the steering column to manually adjust is still best. It never breaks down.
