Thank you so much Lou for putting it was written and then infamous in your lists bro. Some of my personal favorites that don’t get talked about enough as entire projects
@@atribecalledlen3567not when people are talking about top 3 albums that year. A lot of people don't even know who prodigy and the group mobb deep were
90- idrk💀💀💀 91 - the low end theory 92 - the chronic 93 - enter the wu tang 94 - illmatic 95 - the infamous 96 - all eyez on me 97 - life after death 98 - aquemini 99 - 2001 or black on both sides
@@ashrdashrAll Eyez On Me is pretty overrated. The first is awesome but the 2nd while it also has standouts, is mostly filler. Makaveli is a better album he dropped that year in my opinion.
@@ashrdashrIt means I agree with you. Atilens and It Was Written are my favorite albums from 96. It Was Written in particular is my favorite Nas album.
@@BACKDOORBROWNIE710 ready to die in my opinion would also be a “correct” pick (even tho its all subjective so its not necessarily correct) Ready To Die also has amazing lyricism, amazing production, classic songs and you can even say the album is more diverse than illmatic thanks to its singles not being your traditional boom bap songs. Theres nothing wrong with choosing Ready To Die over Illmatic cause its just as good. Illmatic was a moment and i get it, but Biggie delivered a 10/10 too

Nice list, but Id go with the 1st tribe for 90 and 36 Chambers for 93. Makaveli is underrated, but AEOM was huge in 96. In 98, Id say it's a tie between aquemni and Black Star.
My faves 90: ATCQ - People’s Instinctive 91: Low End Theory 92: Pete Rock & CL Smooth - Mecca and the Soul Brother 93: Midnight Marauders 94: Illmatic 95: Pharcyde - Labcabincalifornia 96: ATLiens 97: Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus 98: Black Star - Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star 99: Mos Def - Black on Both Sides (Looking back I do have a bit of a bias for tribe)

for me liquid swords is easily the best album of 95, most I've ever been able to visualize the emcee's lyrics matched with RZA's complementary production. Genius

@second That's my favourite album of all time so not happening I'm afraid. I wasn't a fan of a lot of songs towards the end of 2001 like Some LA N*, Housewife, Ackrite and Bang Bang.
On the topic of Dr.Dre 'pioneering' g-funk, I think it is more accurate to say he more so popularised it. The Ruthless Records group 'Above the Law' particularly Big Hutch doesn't get enough credit for being a pioneer of the g-funk sound. Dre supposedly was inspired by observing Big Hutch's production on their album 'Black Mafia Life'. This album was released in 1993 due to delays with Dre's split from Ruthless, but most of this album was recorded in 1991. Would definitely suggest a listen. Loved this video and the discussion.

All Eyez on me…disc 2….I’m just saying. It’s ok but not great. Disc 1 is legendary Lyrically, Capital Punishment is cold. Musically, it’s good but can’t compete with other albums in 98

@tequilasunset87 I think Tupac has some great stuff, I find his albums to be good but inconsistent/flawed. And I tend to prefer grimey/dirty sounding records with more bite rather than super produced and mainstream sounding records with some obvious exceptions. Obviously All Eyez on Me and Me Against the World are great with some bad/okay tracks here and there, but I just prefer the more abstract and underground sounds of other artists.
Great video, although I wish there was more editing, when you talked about albums I didn't know, I couldn't even recognise them based of the album cover, some album cover pop ups would have been nice
Mine would be 1990 = Amerikkka’s Most Wanted 1991 = 2Pacalypse Now 1992 = The Chronic 1993 = Enter the Wu-Tang 1994 = Illmatic 1995 = Me Against the World 1996 = ATLiens 1997 = Life After Death 1998 = Aquemini 1999 = 2001
That’s a great list except for 91…cmon now, 2Pacalypse Now is ok. There’s 8 albums I’d pick in 91 before his album and 2Pac is one of my favorite favorite rappers
1990: Amerikka most wanted 1991: death certificate 1992: The chronic 1993: Doggystyle 1994: illmatic or ready to die ( can go either way ) 1995: me against the world or liquid swords 1996: all eyes on me 1997: life after death 1998: either dmx album that came out that year 1999: Slim shady Lp or 2001

I was a teen during this decade (ya I'm old) and this really was the peak of hip hop. All the artists were trying to outdo eachother and we were the lucky ones that got to listen to it. Although I still listen to newer stuff I just haven't been into the genre like I was back then. Great lists tho fellas.
What's some newer stuff you've enjoyed? If you haven't heard I highly recommend Melt My Eyez See Your Future from Denzel, and The Forever Story from JID. Those were KY two favorite albums from last year
Thanks so much for this video guys. This is my favorite decade of rap for sure. I've never listened to any of these albums bc I don't really listen to that style of hip-hop (I very much stick to modern stuff), but I do want to be educated on it, so I'm hoping you guys'll do a live album reaction to some of these someday, that would be a lot of fun and a good excuse to listen
Super interesting video. Alot of W picks here. It would be really cool if you guys did reviews/dedicated videos for each of these classics. Would be great for new people getting into hiphop :-)

If Ready to die was in a different year it would be the best album of the year, it deserves more love,, listened to it a week ago, I can't decide my favorite song, and can't find a bad song
Now it's probably Everyday Struggle or Unbelievable, the title track, of the bangers I prefer the original One More Chance, because I heard Big poppa and Juicy too much in the past
For Me 90 America's Most Wanted 91 The Low End Theory 92 The Chronic 93 Wu-Tang 36 Chambers 94 Illmatic 95 Me Against The World 96 It Was Written 97 Life After Death 98 Aquemini 99 Things Fall Apart

This would be my list - I haven't heard every album ever, so recommendations would be clutch 1990 - ATCQ - People's Instinctive Travels & The Paths of Rhythm 1991 - ATCQ - The Low End Theory 1992 - Dr. Dre - The Chronic 1993 - Wu-Tang Clan - 36 Chambers / ATCQ - Midnight Marauders 1994 - Nas - Illmatic 1995 - 2Pac - Me Against The World 1996 - Outkast - ATLiens 1997 - **Haven't Listened to Enough tbh 1998 - Lauryn Hill - Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 1999 - MF DOOM - Operation: Doomsday / Mos Def - Black on Both Sides
Such a casual list I literally predicted every one of Ants picks right, didn’t even mention Stress: The Extinction Agenda, 6 Feet Deep, Funcrusher Plus or Mystic Stylez. 90 - Fear Of A Black Planet (Runner-Up: People’s Instinctive Travels) 91 - The Low End Theory 92 - Bizarre Ride 2 The Pharcyde 93 - 36 Chambers 94 - Illmatic (Runner-Ups: Stress: The Extinction Agenda, 6 Feet Deep) 95 - The Infamous (Runner-Ups: Liquid Swords, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, Mystic Stylez) 96 - Ironman (Runner-Up: Reasonable Doubt) 97 - Funcrusher Plus 98 - Aquemini 99 - Operation: Doomsday Also 94 & 95>>96
Agree the first half but then 95: Only built 4 cuban linx 96: Reasonable doubt 98: Its dark and hell is hot or Capital punishment cant decide 99: Black on both sides
90: ATCQ - People's Instinctive Travels 91: ATCQ - Low End Theory 92: Dr Dre - The Chronic 93: Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu 94: Nas - Illmatic 95: Raekwon - OB4CL 96: Busta Rhymes - The Coming 97: Wu-Tang Clan - Wu-Tang Forever (Disc 1) 98: Lauryn Hill - Misseducation (Strongest year for me - love love love Black Star, Moment of Truth, Jurassic 5, Capital Punishment too) 99: Mos Def - Black on Both Sides Interestingly, 1990, 1996 and 1997 were the toughest for me in terms of not having stand-out candidates, even though 96/97 especially had LOTS of excellent albums, they just don't have albums that I know and LOVE in the same way the other years do. Hence why I picked WTF Side 1 (honestly so fire and underrated, but side 2 isn't quite on the same level for me), and Busta Rhymes is mostly recency bias because I've been enjoying that album recently and felt it is definitely up there for that year and deserves a mention.
90: Fear of a Black Planet 91: The Low End Theory 92: Rage Against the Machine 93: Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) 94: Illmatic 95: Mystic Stylez 96: ATLiens 97: Uptown Saturday Night 98: The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 99: Things Fall Apart

Good list, but you’re really missing an essential album if you don’t acknowledge the existence of IAM - “l’école du micro d’argent” in the year 1997. For me the best hip hop album that year and a worldwide classic in the genre.
1990: AMW 1991: De La Soul Is Dead 1992: The Chronic 1993: 36 Chambers/Doggystyle I truly can’t choose. 1994: you have to say Illmatic but I would certainly have The Sun Rises In The East and Dare Iz A Darkside right up there too. 1995: E. 1999/Infamous/Me Against The World/Liquid Swords 1996: AEOM - there’s no other choice for album of the year IMO with everything that goes into it all 1997: Wu Tang Forever. Not much else to choose from that year 1998: Aquemini/400 Degreez 1999: 2001 no other choice for AOTY that year when everything is taken into consideration.
1990: People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm 1991: The Low End Theory 1992: The Chronic 1993: 36 Chambers; too many classics to pick from that year 1994: Illmatic, Ready to Die very close 2nd 1995: Me Against The World; tough year to pick had 3 classic Wu albums, Mobb Deep, Bone Thugs, etc 1996: Reasonable Doubt, All Eyez On Me and It Was Written close 2nd 1997: Life After Death 1998: Moment Of Truth 1999: The Chronic 2001; Black on both sides, Operation Doomsday, and Slim Shady LP are close though
Massive W Luca for having Nas - It Was written as the best album for 1996. Imo it’s a top 10 album of all time, I’ve never heard a rapper rap better than he did in 96. Only Biggie in 97 comes close imo
@@bennyjames7806 That’s your opinion. I think Nas was the far superior rapper to Tupac and if you listen to both albums you can easily tell who the better rapper is

Not a Tupac fan?
@tequilasunset87 I think Tupac has some great stuff, I find his albums to be good but inconsistent/flawed. And I tend to prefer grimey/dirty sounding records with more bite rather than super produced and mainstream sounding records with some obvious exceptions. Obviously All Eyez on Me and Me Against the World are great with some bad/okay tracks here and there, but I just prefer the more abstract and underground sounds of other artists.

Those were KY two favorite albums from last year
Mystic stylez by three 6 deserves an honourable mention for 1995
Thanks so much for this video guys. This is my favorite decade of rap for sure. My picks :

I would've liked to see UGK's Ridin' Dirty in the conversation for '96. Other than that, great list.
I've never listened to any of these albums bc I don't really listen to that style of hip-hop (I very much stick to modern stuff), but I do want to be educated on it, so I'm hoping you guys'll do a live album reaction to some of these someday, that would be a lot of fun and a good excuse to listen
Great video from the Not Only That Podcast.
Super interesting video. Alot of W picks here. It would be really cool if you guys did reviews/dedicated videos for each of these classics. Would be great for new people getting into hiphop :-)

1996 - Reasonable Doubt
1997 - In My Lifetime Vol. 1
1998 - Aquemini
1999 - The Slim Shady LP
If Ready to die was in a different year it would be the best album of the year, it deserves more love,, listened to it a week ago, I can't decide my favorite song, and can't find a bad song
Now it's probably Everyday Struggle or Unbelievable, the title track, of the bangers I prefer the original One More Chance, because I heard Big poppa and Juicy too much in the past
For Me
90 America's Most Wanted
91 The Low End Theory
92 The Chronic
93 Wu-Tang 36 Chambers
94 Illmatic
95 Me Against The World

1996 - All Eyez On Me
1997 - Life After Death
1998 - It's Dark, Hell is Hot
1999 - 2001
This would be my list - I haven't heard every album ever, so recommendations would be clutch
1990 - ATCQ - People's Instinctive Travels & The Paths of Rhythm
1991 - ATCQ - The Low End Theory
1992 - Dr. Dre - The Chronic
1993 - Wu-Tang Clan - 36 Chambers / ATCQ - Midnight Marauders
1994 - Nas - Illmatic
1995 - 2Pac - Me Against The World
1996 - Outkast - ATLiens
1997 - **Haven't Listened to Enough tbh
1998 - Lauryn Hill - Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
1999 - MF DOOM - Operation: Doomsday / Mos Def - Black on Both Sides
Such a casual list I literally predicted every one of Ants picks right, didn’t even mention Stress: The Extinction Agenda, 6 Feet Deep, Funcrusher Plus or Mystic Stylez.
90 - Fear Of A Black Planet (Runner-Up: People’s Instinctive Travels)
91 - The Low End Theory
92 - Bizarre Ride 2 The Pharcyde
93 - 36 Chambers
94 - Illmatic (Runner-Ups: Stress: The Extinction Agenda, 6 Feet Deep)
95 - The Infamous (Runner-Ups: Liquid Swords, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, Mystic Stylez)
96 - Ironman (Runner-Up: Reasonable Doubt)
97 - Funcrusher Plus
98 - Aquemini
99 - Operation: Doomsday
Also 94 & 95>>96
Agree the first half but then
95: Only built 4 cuban linx
96: Reasonable doubt
98: Its dark and hell is hot or Capital punishment cant decide
99: Black on both sides
90: ATCQ - People's Instinctive Travels
91: ATCQ - Low End Theory
92: Dr Dre - The Chronic
93: Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu
94: Nas - Illmatic
95: Raekwon - OB4CL
96: Busta Rhymes - The Coming
97: Wu-Tang Clan - Wu-Tang Forever (Disc 1)
98: Lauryn Hill - Misseducation (Strongest year for me - love love love Black Star, Moment of Truth, Jurassic 5, Capital Punishment too)
99: Mos Def - Black on Both Sides
Interestingly, 1990, 1996 and 1997 were the toughest for me in terms of not having stand-out candidates, even though 96/97 especially had LOTS of excellent albums, they just don't have albums that I know and LOVE in the same way the other years do. Hence why I picked WTF Side 1 (honestly so fire and underrated, but side 2 isn't quite on the same level for me), and Busta Rhymes is mostly recency bias because I've been enjoying that album recently and felt it is definitely up there for that year and deserves a mention.
Great video guys👌

Do You Want More by The Roots in 1995 is a solid contender as well. But I'm fine with Infamous
Good list, but you’re really missing an essential album if you don’t acknowledge the existence of IAM - “l’école du micro d’argent” in the year 1997. For me the best hip hop album that year and a worldwide classic in the genre.
I'd have gone for Me against the world too. Definitely top 10
1990: AMW
1991: De La Soul Is Dead
1992: The Chronic
1993: 36 Chambers/Doggystyle I truly can’t choose.
1994: you have to say Illmatic but I would certainly have The Sun Rises In The East and Dare Iz A Darkside right up there too.
1995: E. 1999/Infamous/Me Against The World/Liquid Swords
1996: AEOM - there’s no other choice for album of the year IMO with everything that goes into it all
1997: Wu Tang Forever. Not much else to choose from that year
1998: Aquemini/400 Degreez
1999: 2001 no other choice for AOTY that year when everything is taken into consideration.
1990: People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm
1991: The Low End Theory
1992: The Chronic
1993: 36 Chambers; too many classics to pick from that year
1994: Illmatic, Ready to Die very close 2nd
1995: Me Against The World; tough year to pick had 3 classic Wu albums, Mobb Deep, Bone Thugs, etc
1996: Reasonable Doubt, All Eyez On Me and It Was Written close 2nd
1997: Life After Death
1998: Moment Of Truth
1999: The Chronic 2001; Black on both sides, Operation Doomsday, and Slim Shady LP are close though
Big w you have but midnigth marauders is the Best album from 1993
Massive W Luca for having Nas - It Was written as the best album for 1996. Imo it’s a top 10 album of all time, I’ve never heard a rapper rap better than he did in 96. Only Biggie in 97 comes close imo
@@bennyjames7806 nah, too many skips in the second half of the album
@@bennyjames7806 That’s your opinion. I think Nas was the far superior rapper to Tupac and if you listen to both albums you can easily tell who the better rapper is
@@secondaccount6660I think Reaosnable doubt is better than illmatic, the lyrics in that album are untouched
For 1992, don't forget about Whut? Thee Album by Redman. Also, Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde by Pharcyde.
