Liquid Crystal Magic: The LCD Watch Story

  • Nothing screams retro like a classic digital watch LCD display.
The comforting 7 segmented glowing numbers combined with the noble electroluminescent backlight is such an omnipresent thing - mass produced in its millions - that you may underestimate the excitement of the original discoveries of liquid crystal’s almost magical qualities and how amazing the level of innovation is that originally drove its use in flat panel displays and its production at insane scales.
You’ll know of current advanced LCD tech in your latest big TV, smart phone and computer screen - all originating from its first use in watches and calculators - and we are now coming full circle with watches using OLEDs and in the future things such as Micro LED.
We cover RCA labs initial work to develop LCD displays, the original applications within dynamic scattering mode (DSM) watches of Optel, Microma and Texas Instruments, as well as the Twisted Nematic or Field Effect LCD display of the Gruen Teletime and others. We have a slight detour into TFTs and active matrix with the Seiko TV watch and some other innovations like pseudo analog, double layered LCD, Super twisted nematic LCD and more recently memory in pixel (MLCD), OLED and Micro LED displays for watches.
I hope you are electrically excited for this twisted thread of a story on the history of the LCD watch display.

Funnily enough, MIP is the electrical equivalent of how you would build a display in Minecraft, with Redstone. Has been a while since I played that but it's a fun connection.
Each pixel being controlled by it's own pixels removes the need for constantly scanning all the pixels with new data, which is what saves power on larger pixel count.
When drawing larger segments or especially in the MIP testing screen of the hidden service menu, can you see how it takes the watch a split second to update all the pixels.
Currently I'm closely observing how the display of my GBX-100 is slowly degrading from a hydro-mod I attempted on it, after having had a GBD-100 die to water damage but it's screen surviving.
It's quite educational to see the effects this has and later to repair it with new diffusing polariser films, or perhaps just replacing it with the spare to keep my main watch going.
Thought it'd be fun to share some of my observations on this style specifically, as it is a quite new and unexplored display style.
Overall the video seems well-researched and actually quite correct in it's terminology, at least to the degree of my hobby knowledge.

Another wow video. Amazing research and production work on a subject that I did not immediately think of as interesting, but was eventually deeply intrigued by. I love LCD screens on watches mainly because they remind of my childhood. It's really fascinating to learn about the history and development of the technology. Love it.

In the late 70's my dad bought me an LCD watch with a tritium backlight. It was reasonably bright and I loved it, unfortunately I can't remember the manufacturer.

Another amazing look at an aspect of watches that no other watch channel really covers (to my knowledge anyway). A fascinating and comprehensive look at LCDs and their use in watches presented in an easily digestible and engaging way. Just phenomenal work as always Gordon 👏👏👏👏 You also reminded me that I really want an MLCD G Shock 💸😂
