How do you do anything without seeming awful? Should I not laugh because there is war in Ukraine? Not vacation because of wildfires in Texas? There are disasters everywhere. Some not even natural. How do you even smile when people can’t even visit or live in Florida or other states because they may not fit an agenda 🌈🤷‍♂️. So. I will vacation where I want. Not worry about who is suffering down the road because someone somewhere is always suffering. Is this your first time in America or even on the planet? 👽

When I first visited Maui in the 1970’s, they were just building the Sheraton, up the beach by Lahaina. Returning in the ‘80’s, the beach there was unrecognizable due to all of the resort hotels built up, bringing in dollars for sure, but even then, bringing frustration to native families being impacted by the overdevelopment and the draw on resources.
We wouldn’t think of going to Maui at this time. We are sending money to the Red Cross for the Maui Fire Victims and to the Maui Humane Society, and looking to see how much more we can send soon.
Please. Do not go to Lahaina and do no take pictures of what is now holy ground containing the remains of human beings. Enough pictures have been taken by the media. Offer the respect, help, and kindness that you would want shown to your family trying to survive through a tragedy like this.

It's tourism that built Lahaina town, and it's tourism that's going to build it back strong.
It's tourism that saved the Hawaiian culture.
I remember when I was a second grader, when they were teaching the Hawaiian culture in our schools. But the following year, they removed the teaching of the Hawaiian culture from our curriculum. It wasn't until I was in my early 20s that tourism started to grow once again, and it was the tourists that wanted to know more about the Hawaiian culture and to experience the Aloha Spirit of its people.
It's my opinion that it was tourism that saved the Hawaiian culture and helped it to thrive once again. With tourism, the economy grew, created many new jobs, and kept many of our children from moving away.
Let's face it, Maui needs tourism to survive; otherwise, Maui will die.
I grew up on Maui in the early fifties. It was wonderful to have experienced island life back then, but times have changed. Maui is truly a tropical paradise and it will remain to be that paradise for all who live there, and visit.

@@HawaiiSustainable Over Tourism is a new term to me. I used to live in a heavily touristed location, Door County in Wisconsin, by the way, so I think I understand where you are coming from. The place has been taken over by tourists and tourist oriented businesses, and all the scenic locations are condoed to death. I left. There are more tourists now because the economy is better, and people have more money. Just remember also that everyone in Hawaii is from someplace else, and people throughout history have resented newcomers for one reason or another. One answer is a visitor lottery system that regulates the number of tourists. Tourists will come, and the local government (you the people) have to make sure that enough resources are available for everyone. It is not easy. It takes a lot of people to overcome bags of money, but it can be done. Organize, vote, and become involved in your own future. Good Luck.

Totally understandable, but respect works both ways. People who are home to the island come first. And I understand why. I agree. And I respect it. I know now is not the time. People are grieving. I can see the pain Hawaiian people feel and prayers to all. Many in the past week have shown by how they talk that they dont want tourists. And Im sure unfortunately, they will lose a lot of business when people are still willing to help out. Ive noticed many have seen what I see, not feeling welcomed. But it isnt my land, it's the land of Hawaii and I respect the spirit of Hawaii and the people. I just know that tourism probably will drop a lot.

I’m not saying who is right locals or tourists but resentment is terrible. Locals and tourists died in those fires. Everybody matters. I don’t think people should vacation on Maui now. Healing and recovery first. Please have respect for all .that’s the biggest problem in the world. If you can’t see that there’s no hope for the

I'm so happy that Hawaii is making tourism money but even though Maui is being visited the scorched earth of Lahaina is still and active recovery town and a sacred area where loved ones are lost forever. I'm so sad. However, I'm so proud of the indigenous people who belong to their land are protecting their land, history, people and legacy. As with native Americans did with their land protection, I wonder if they can apply for indigenous citizens protection from the corporate greedy buttheads and have their own rights declared to this land/town. There should be some guidance from your mayor, Senator and Governor to pass a bill for this very meaningful rights to protect your land, life, legacy, history and maintain the Hawaiian way of life which is so beautiful. This is without question your land and you need to demand that everyone by law needs to understand and respect it! I pray that Hawaii and the federal government and local government will do exactly what you need to carry on with this type of protection and love that Hawaiian's people deserve. You beautiful people should have a meeting and as of now I believe that there should be free legal services to introduce this issue to your politicians to make this the law of the people's land. Can anyone else chime in as to how this can happen or if this is happening on any level?
