    All my life as a singer, from alto to soprano, NO ONE... taught me this.
    All I always hear was of "breathing control" and "opening my mouth more". Not one person in my entire life has ever told me about this specific detail.
    Yawning, yes. Opening my mouth, yes. But this!
    THIS WAS THE MAIN DETAIL I NEVER KNEW OF!
    23 years of singing. I watch this video. I can pull off singing high and low without worrying of scratches at the throat, or forcing more air pushes from my stomach.
    I'm ready for the solo this Saturday. God bless this video 😭🙏❤

      This is crazy but I’m 23 and have been singing for as long as I can remember and in theatre school I could just never open my throat. I can sing well, but quietly and can’t project much. Every time I tried to sing louder and more open I’d lose the note. And literally today this changed everything! And yes, no teacher had ever told me that before :(

    No no no no. While, this is good background information, it’s counterproductive and potentially harmful advice. A lowered soft pallete is a symptom of a bigger problem. An improperly supported voice.
    Consciously trying to raise your soft pallete, only leads to tension, and frustration. Here’s the reality. Your soft pallete will raise on its own when your breath support is right.
    There’s a very easy way to know if the soft pallete is raised. Pinch your nose and sing any vowel. Did your tone change? Become more nasal? Your soft pallete isnt raised.
    The solution is to fix your breath support. Take a proper full breath and try again. Pinch your nose. Your tone shouldn’t change.
    But really, you’ll go much farther much faster, by addressing the underlying problem, rather than all the symptoms.
    Some advice.. as singers we are voice actors. What makes the difference between a good and bad actor? Their delivery. A bad actor comes across as fake, and forced.
    The same concept applies to singing. Learn to tap into the emotional context of the song. Tell the story with genuine emotion. Combine it with solid breath support, and everything falls into place.
    One final piece of advice. Pay attention to your speaking habits throughout the day. Singing is just speaking on melody and rhythm. Properly supporting your speaking voice throughout the day, will directly translate into proper singing habits.
    What I recommend:
    - Take a good deep breath ( no need to obsess over it though ).
    - Tap into the emotions of the song. The song is your monologue. Tell the story.
    - Maintain good posture.
    - Support your speaking voice throughout the day.
    - Practice every day. 10 mins a day is better than 1 hour every Sunday.

    • @theflamingphoenix6986
      @theflamingphoenix6986 4 года назад +21

      @@gibsonlauren5072 Chest voices are stronger and more powerful than a head voice, which has a breathy tone to it and is a lot higher. They're named so as they seem to vibrate inside your chest or head. I'd say both are important; a chest voice is good for powerful songs with a lot of emotion (take Into the Unknown from Frozen), while a head voice is used to hit very high notes, and often used in opera.

    Amateur singer here. I believe the arguments behind sounding “nasal” are completely backwards in this video.
    When do people sound the most nasal? When they have a cold. What happens to their nose? It gets blocked. Lemme say that again: people sound the most nasal when they have their nose blocked.
    So you want to fix “sounding nasal” by… blocking the nose?

    • @singgeek
      @singgeek  6 лет назад +125

      I'm happy to hear that the video was helpful! Flat singing can be very frustrating, especially when you are aware of it, and it can make you feel self conscious about your voice.
      It common for people, who feel timid about singing, to hold back on their natural sound volume which can make you sing flat. I'd recommend that you try singing out loud somewhere where you feel "safe" and see if you are still singing flat. Working on breath support can also help to get rid of flat singing. Hope that helps :)

    Pronounce vowels farther back and make them brighter. Automatically raises it. But dont use American vowels. American vowels sound like Aee, Eee, Aiee, Ouu, Yuuu. Those are useless.
    Instead use pure vowels and day Ah, Eh, Ih, Oh, Ooo.
    Watch your palate raise automatically

      Medo Fawzy Yes it is, I saw you asked about the larynx earlier. Inhaling with the "surprised face" often lowers the larynx a bit too, which is helpful when singing higher. At one point when you've practiced more, you should be able to raise the soft palate without making the face :)

    Great explanation!!
    I usually struggle at E4-F4 (I'm newbie baritone), but now with this position a-la-home-alone and with my soft palate raised to close my nasal passage I can reach C5 ... and loudly at that ... I sound like a horny seagull, but I hope I can work on it to put more mix and make it sound more natural.
    Also after trying this and hitting the notes from A4 to C5 several times, it's much easier to reach E4-F4 !

      Hi Dapper Dan, Thanks for your question! Yes that would be a good way to check it. Just be aware that the air will go in your nose when you sing words with 'm' or 'n' sounds. These sounds are natural nasal sounds which automatically lowers the soft palate. Hope this helps, otherwise please don't hesitate to ask again :)

    My last singing teacher did this with another student once. The ng-sound is the key. My eye trick is to try threatening someone with the eyes, so they know your voice is about to kill them. The bullets are not being changed from the throat, but from below the diaphrame; or more precisely, from the bottom 😅

  • @melregissings
    @melregissings 4 года назад +16

    The best advice I received for opening the soft palate is to completely allow the breathe you inhale to open it for you. As you press the breathe against the diaphragm it will keep the soft palate open for as long as you need. This really helps to prevent straining.

    Hi! Just a question: do you have any guidelines for when using a raised soft palate and when nót. I discovered this recently and have been practising a lot. My high notes sound a lot fuller, but now I’m also wondering how to finetune this technique. Is it advisable to keep your soft palate high as a default mode, orrrrr is it just for the really voluminous parts of a song?

    • @bonniesomedy1339
      @bonniesomedy1339 2 года назад +1

      I found this confusing. I hear the difference in sound that she demonstrates. But she implies that it is best to sing with your soft palate "raised" all the time. However, in my singing lessons, my teacher always emphasized what she called "free" singing, i.e., not forcing your muscles into held positions. She said singing should feel as natural and effortless as talking. But she also demonstrated the importance of both the nasal passage and the throat/mouth passage in singing. That "nasal" sound demonstrated by this teacher is not a "normal" one because it is created by blocking the mouth passage with the back of the tongue. It is best to keep both mouth and nose open and sound flowing freely through both.

    Great explanation! Are there any good exercises to do when you feel that your nose sometimes sound stuffed singing phrases in a song (i assume due to lack of control of the soft palate) when switching between say the consonant m and a vowel.
    I also found one thing that is really tricky to do if you don't raise the soft palate, and that is to do a normal whistle since all air escapes though the nose.

    Raising your soft palate blocks off a important resonator, your naval cavity which helps with resonance (and it doesn’t make you sound nasal) which helps and assist the vocal folds and helps you sound more resonant, freer larynx control, helps with agility, flexibility which helps you stretch and reach those higher notes with more ease and it encourages more ring etc. Idk I did this (raising my soft palate) and my voice sounds weird as heck and its harder to do stuff. It could just be me but idk I’d rather have a moderately lifted or moderately lowered soft palate imo.

    *Okay so I was once advised that singing in the bathroom makes my voice much better, and also I was sounded much better, you've earned yourself a new sub! But in your opinion where is the best place to sing in a house but no studio?*

    • @singgeek
      @singgeek  4 года назад +6

      Great question! The acoustics in the bathroom adds reverb (slight echo) to your voice which makes it fuller and more pleasant. In fact, this effect is usually added to voices on recordings artificially so you are most likely used to hearing voices this way and therefor it gives you confidence to sing in the bathroom. Confidence is great because it relaxes your voice. In conclusion, I'd say the bathroom is a prime place to practice singing :)
