- Here is the final video on the fireplace construction which was far easier and quicker than I thought it might be. Now it’s all about position of the stove itself.
The tiles are from Sarsen Stone Group

Hi James you have spoilt us today with 2 videos with excellent results. The fire place is truly spectacular and everyone would enjoy it, but its yours!! Well done. Also your investigation and research into every portion of the project, and passing it on to all of us is priceless, especially for those who want to follow in your footsteps, Many thanks for that cos I hope to be one of them. (PJ)
Carpenter, electrician, plumber, tile setter, can’t wait to see you become an engine mechanic
We’ll see......
Afternoon James. On it again lol 😆 Yes the fire on the angle is perfect 👌 Cleaning the boat reminded me when I clean my truck and trailer by hand lol 😆 Love the bit at the end when you sit on your seat opening parcels and explaining your next plan 😃 Keep safe as always cheers Stevie 😎
I think you really need to remove the drain at least temporarily. We call it a basket here in the US, and here we use flexible "plumber's putty" compressed between the basket and the rest of the sink. The problem is, it dries out and cracks over the years and will be a source of leaks into the cabinet below. Even if you don't replace the basket, you really need to undo it and scrape out the old dried plumber's putty and put in new fresh putty.
I agree. The stove looks a lot better at an angle James. Job well done.
I'm really enjoying watch this boat come to life. Definitely fire at an angle, not square. Fingers crossed that all progresses well.
A few more of those tiles around, here and there would really give you some continuity and a great accent.
Good idea! Could you use one as a trivet? 🤔
Good tip about some caravan stuff being cheaper than marine stuff. You might have saved me some money there for when I eventually start my fit-out. Nice one James.
You’re welcome. Not everything though. Some appliances won’t cope with marine vibrations, like boilers etc. Things like water systems though should be fine
Scrubs up well James 👍🏼👍🏼
it gives more room for fireside tools and a coal scuttle.
I am sure they are all upside down except for the ones which are perpendicular! x
It looks fabulous.
Well done as usual. Renovating a narrow boat is like eating an elephant, "do it a bit at a time". Your willingness to attack any project with planning, tenacity and and determination to overcome problem is an inspiration. Thanks for you program.
On an angle the fire would be like all other boats I follow. I have never seen a fire how you was planning to fix it.
Much better at angle. Really looks great when it's all trimmed 🥰it will look fantastic
I imagine the people commenting about upside down tiles are just having a joke at your expense.
I would normally not be a huge fan of patterned tiling like that, but if you’re gonna have it anywhere, a narrowboat hearth seems like a good place for it.
That’s exactly what I thought! If you can’t be a bit eccentric on a Narrowboat on the English canals then where can you hey?
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt and also, it’s relatively limited in area. That single square meter or so doesn’t get nearly as overwhelming as a whole hallway floor would, let alone anything bigger.
You are doing a fine job. Much better than I could for sure.
So glad you have chosen that way I was really hoping you would
To make cleaning jobs easier, you should see about getting a handheld steam-cleaner.
Greetings , Nicely done , really! I love the fact you have decided to go at an angle...Cheers mate
If you've any of the CS board left you can make yourself a pair of heat resistant shin guards.
Hi James. Notice Your old Tunnel lights are mounted in a vulnerable position. Those cabin corners are very exposed to bridge holes and tunnel walls.
Consider fitting the new ones on the bulkhead if you can ? Tiles look fabulous.
Really good point - hadn’t spotted that ! 👍🏼
The fireplace looks great. Have you considered putting the bed in the bow over the water tank as it will give you a great more space in the bedroom for draws and a wardrobe
I would second the suggestion, maybe having to build a small platform with steps up to the bed to compensate for raising the bed up so high. You could put dresser drawers into the sides of the platform and use the rest of the space for long-term storage (never enough of that on a narrow boat.)
I just don't know that there's space enough for two beds in that room.
Hi only a suggestion, EE is the best for internet. Used one of their small boxes, signal every day down to London, via GU, River Thames and Oxford Canal.
Also stove needs to be fixed to the floor. Have you got some of the box steel tube left ? Could then fit behind each foot under the stove. Screw that to the floor and then drill through each foot horizontally and into the box steel and fit nuts and bolts to secure each foot. Stove and hearth look great.
Looks better and better.
Love the tiles!! A lot to do but you will get it done. Take care. ❤👋
encaustic cement tiles are the best, even if they weigh a ton. They're all beautiful and highly patterned.
Looking amazimg now, the fte looks better angled, great step by step for those who want to give a go, hopefully soon it be up and running keeping the boat nice and toasty in these cold days and night's. Keep them coming looking forward to more
Why not do the floor of the bathroom as a wet room? That way you won't need a shower tray. You can always use some ridge tiles if you want to define the shower area.
I think if looks better at an angle, but functionally it won't make the slightest difference. The heat will come primarily from convection, and will rise to the ceiling and then spread around the interior. The radiant heat MIGHT be a bit greater aligned, as it is, more closely with the longitudinal axis, but as a longtime owner of a wood heating stove, I think the perceived difference will be nil. It's that big hunk of hot iron that you will come to love, as pretty as the flickering light rays may be.
As someone who spent several years building his own house over several years, with no building experience whatever, let me assure you that there will be many little defects that stick out like dogs' balls to your eye while building them, but once done will be invisible to all who look. Don't obsess about them!
I like the look of your interior., which reminds me of my own: packets of nails, lengths of timber, tools everywhere. Your wife will hate it but it will all be just as organised and convenient as you could wish for.
As you say: a bit at a time, learning as you go, and in the end something to be proud of. Good luck and best wishes!
If possible recess the shower tray. Love the vlogs
Fireplace looks amazing 👌
Loving this series James a real inspiration to try something like this.
Thank you, very kind. If I’m honest, it’s all coming quite naturally for me given I have no clue what I’m actually doing !!
The best thing about a stove is the flames and the more places you can see the flames from, the warmer you'll feel. I can't take my eyes off those diagonal lines in the pattern on the hearth though. You can always mitre the hearth later.
I angled my stove in a similar fashion but I did mitre the front edge as you discussed which for me was better for foot flow through the boat..
Stove is spot on James...💙👊😎
Top job with that whole fireplace. Good choice on the orientation of the stove, it looks great. Omnidirectional antenna receives equally from all directions, unlike something like a TV aerial which needs to be pointed at the transmitter. Aim to minimise the length of cable from the outside antenna to the router. You lose signal in the cable so the shorter it is, the stronger the signal that the router sees and less chance of interference from things like solar panels, fridges and inverters. (and dont clip that cable directly to electrics for the same reason) .
Excellent points there, thanks
Good work James, enjoy your dinner.
Like the tiles. I went through much the same process a couple of years ago whilst fitting out my boat. Just a couple of points, some already mentioned.
1) You do need to secure the stove firmly or it will move when you get bumped around in a lock. Not sure just how without spoiling your tiling.
2) Shower tray, I originally bought a shallow one but changed it for a deeper (standard) one. Depending on how your boat is trimmed you may find the water spilling over the edge. Also I found I could use a standard height shower screen with a bit of fiddling at the foot level.
I like the look of the tiles and the angled stove. 😁 You're doing a great job!
ignore the trolls that tell you some tiles are the wrong way round, it's a wind up. they look great, nice job
Oh ok - good to know - ta
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt sorry, I thought you would have a laugh. I guess the humour missed it’s mark. Fireplace looks great
musictube250 I guess I’m just paranoid. I only recently discovered, rather embarrassingly that the Union flag also has an upside down. I thought it was symmetrical, so I’m a bit gullible when it comes to symmetry
It's your boat, you can put the stove any angle you want.
That chair by the stove is going to be incredibly cozy, and it will keep your cup of tea nice and warm when you rest it on the stove.
Judging by my fire vlog I do love a good air gap. Looks great Mr James.
Mate seeing that cargo boat being filled with aggregate was awesome. I felt your enthusiasm for that, and great to catch on film. Are you still cruising the Severn, are you in bore territory ?
Great Job and the stove looks great and I have ocd lol
Relief. Thanks 👍🏼
Looks good matey stay safe.
Looks great. Good choice!
I really like it u did a great job on a difficult design with tiles.
Brilliant job James. I love seeing you sitting next to the fireplace. Look how much work you've done! Liked the guitar playing sounded like Oasis?
Get in there !!!!!! I played something and someone recognised it !!!!!
Wonderwall
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt I hope you don't get dinged for the copyright if you decide to start monetizing the channel. You still can, but _Oasis_ will get 2/3 of the advertising revenue for this particular video (I speak from experience.)
Midwest Concert Video really, I’m sure Noel has better things to do. I’ll fight it at high court for publicity purposes only !!!
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt If it gets recognized, it will be automatically by RUclips's _Content ID_ system (hopefully the musicians themselves have better things to do.)
Don't forget that you have to secure the stove. It will be much easier to drill the feet or fit brackets before you fit the flue rather than after! Good luck drilling into those beautiful thick tiles!
Check out Bar Keeper’s Friend double down.
Hi James, didn't notice any tile spacers being used, If the tiles were butted together there will be nothing to grout.
Look again, he did use tile spacers. James just pulled them out after the tiles were set.
Yes I used 2mm spacers - sorry for omitting that detail. Will address on next one !!
You can get a new drain ring for sin
Very nice!
Thank goodness you have decided to go with the stove at a diagonal. I didn't comment on your previous choice because a man should be allowed to have his stove however he likes but my inner feng shui is much happier now that you have chosen diagonal as a stove should always be directed at the centre of the room. Those thick cement tiles should act as a heat soak and so give back heat even after the fire has died down. Can I ask how long the boat is as I don't think you've ever mentioned it?
She’s a 42 footer !
Listen, your inner feng shui has dictated my hob orientation, my stove....come on!! Forward warning for you then......Im having my bed on starboard and I hope you can deal with that.
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt My feng shui has the bed in our planned narrowboat in the centre at the bow. That is less about feng shui and more about the fact that I'm quite wide and my girlfriend is quite wide and the average narrowboat linear or cross bed just doesn't cut it. Apart from the width neither of us wants to climb over the other to get to the toilet in the middle of the night! We have lived on a 33ft sailing boat (mainly in the Med) for sixteen years now and have kind of worked out what is important in a small space and what works and what doesn't work. P.S.(don't tell her that I said she was wide!)
warm water and white vinegar, or just neat white vinegar.
Fireplace is perfect. I'd keep some spare tiles (just in case someone is as clumsy as me). Does the stove need to be locked down somehow or is its weight and the chimney enough to keep it in place?
Love the hearth tiles. The sinks have a vintage industrial look about them - school or hosqital/vet and I think the drain will be good old fashioned brass. It may take a few treatments and the qassage of time to get them looking good again but try slathering them in brown sauce - yes - brown sauce, the acid in it gradually cuts through anything. I've seen a really nice coqqer fire qlace canoqy made out of an old airing cuqboard cylinder and brought to a high shine with some Daddies! ('not seen that brand lately but HR does just as well!)
I think you'll find sitting that close to a stove will cook your legs😁
Mine is about 4 feet from where I sit and it's frigging boiling!
I think the tiling looks cracking mate👍👍👍,I like the fire on the angle, not as boxy looking if you know what I mean lol
I do know what you mean - I agree. You scared me for a sec there saying tiling and cracking in the same sentence !!
🤣🤣🤣, oh about your 4g antenna, I would put it on one of those extendable poles cos the more they are in open air away from the roof the better the reception, I have one and just moving it up a few feet away from the roof made it go up 1 bar.iv seen aluminium ones cheap somewhere, about 1mtr,that extend up to nearly 3
Great job James ,that looks awesome .when is your planned date for getting her afloat?
I’m hoping for first week of Jan ideally. It’s still touch and go. The stern gland should be fixed this week hopefully
Your modem aerial should not travel through the same hole as electricity will give you a weaker signal I am a computer network engineer and I know my stuff hope this helps
Yes that really does help. Good man, cheers for the pointer 👍🏼
Hi from Canada,
Are you planning to add support for the edge tiles, as if they are left unsupported they are probably
going to fracture. Like the youtube very much, keep up the great work.
Hello from England !!
Yes, I’m adding trim which will support the tiles - I can’t see these fat things fracturing !!!
Cat6 it while you can ports everywhere.
Lol, I think someone is pulling your leg with the upside down tiles. They are asymetrical, I'm sure you must see that. Trolls will be trolls - they have nothing better to do.
The comments on some tiles being upside down on your last vlog were just meant as a joke :)
Couldn't you just slope the floor for shower like a wet room? And oh yeah I can see the one that's upside down aswell ;)
What??? Seriously?
Too much engineering involved with a sloping floor, plus I’m only 5”10 so I’m fine with a shower at that height. Taller guests can wait until they get home, or crouch
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt No it's not, Sorry I'm only joking I thought you knew people were pulling your leg, It looks great. Suppose it would be, sounds simple but suppose if think about it is quite technical.
This product may help with you sink, Go to amazon.co.uk and type in Bar Keepers Friend, Cleanser, 12oz. (340g). Just a thought. South Carolina
I’m going to buy it, purely cos I like the name. Even if you told me it was crap and made it worse !
Ha ha ha sink sorry
