People forget that Smooth by Rob Thomas and Santana briefly became the national anthem of the US in the early 2000s. I’ll never forget right after 9/11 they had a moment of silence at ground zero and then blasted Smooth over the loudspeakers

Dude it was a wack time. I'm never forgetting the BAFFLING image of bedroom-eyes, shirt-unbuttoning Enrique Inglesias singing "Hero" whispily as a 9/11 tribute while crowds cheer him on. It was nuts.

@@TheKeeperofChaos Damn I had forgotten about some of that. Those first few weeks right after 9/11 were indescribably weird in regards to pop culture and celebrities and just the amount of marketing. The evening of 9/11 Fred Meyer already had God Bless America shirts out and my mom bought some and made me and my sister wear them to school. Lol. Remember those safety pin beaded broach things everyone made at after school programs and youth groups and shit? People made so much money with 9/11 merch.

By the end of 2001 Daniel Jones was working full time on his doctorate degree in Maritime Law at UC Berkeley to complete his PhD. In an earlier interview on NPR from 1996 he expressed a fascination with modern shipping and what happens to shipping containers that fall off of ships in international waters. He wanted to know who was responsible for all those missing containers and decided to per-sue a career in litigating with admiralty procedure in the admiralty jurisdiction of the district courts. By the middle of 2001, Darren Hayes had moved himself and his boyfriend, including his boyfriends immediate family members to a ranch in northern Montana to start breeding miniature Yorkshire terriers and Australian Silky terriers for the upcoming Fédération Cynologique Internationale / World Dog Show in 2022. All of his time was devoted to raising an estimated 400+ pure bred terriers at his farm with no inbreeding. The music took a back seat to their new found hobbies and by the end of 2001 they had completely parted ways and haven’t talk to each other sense.

Exactly. In my opinion, MB20 is the quintessential pop rock band, from the era that defined pop rock. Their songs are extremely ear wormy but the lyrics and delivery are unique and interesting. And I love the guys voice. I never associated Rob's vocals with Post Grunge vocal sound. I feel like a lot of singers that do Kroeger or Daughtry voice are doing an impression of masculinity. Like "signaling" a gruffness and strength, and that's where the cringe comes from. Rob's not doing that. Rob's voice has this almost feminine and alien quality to it. It's weird in the best way. For being the most popular pop band in the world at one point, and having instrumental production that's mostly by the numbers, there is something off and delightfully strange about their sound that comes through in the lyrics and delivery. That's all Rob.

@@jamisonlamkin5576 I know right? I feel like Rob Thomas is one of the most underrated pop songwriters. Remembering the early 2000s, artists like Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, Bilal, Jill Scott, etc come to mind. One of the best eras for R+B/soul imo. It's a shame that the movement kind of became a caricature of itself when everybody including McDonald's tried to capitalize on it. I understand why a lot of people like Raphael Saadiq and Jaguar Wright ended up rejected the Neo soul label, but that's one of the most nostalgic times for me. R+B became a lot more bland after that.

Learning Fantano is a closet Savage Garden fan is honestly such a mindblowing fact to me. I would have never guessed it. They feel like the kind of act he would hate to be honest.
My mother was always playing her CDs in the house growing up and that SG CD was one of her faves so I have a lot of love for it. Honestly, they do have a lot of bangers, a lot of tracks much more interesting than IKILY. Gunning Down Romance went so hard to my little emo soul as a tween and Two Beds and a Coffee Machine remains an almost needlessly heartbreaking track about fleeing domestic abuse. Hell yeah we are very pro Savage Garden here.
