In 2012, Tyler The Creator was blasted online (what else is new?) regarding an RIP tweet to the Columbine School Massacre shooters. He then wrote the song "Pigs" released two years later in his sophomore album. The song gives intriguing and potent insight into the epidemic in and of itself, and what we can do on an individual level to help contribute to positive change.
What do you think of this record? Let's talk about it in the comments!

I am a Christian and student and I made this channel when I was in high school. I started this channel because I love talking about music (specifically hip hop) and given that the genre seems to be going downhill, I want to be part of the community that preserves the expectation of great music and dissecting what makes a beautiful record. Dealing with a lack of friends to discuss these matters with, I hoped to start my own community that loves music just as I do, as well as to provide a unique perspective as a follower of Christ that also appreciates this community. I appreciate everyone who watches and I am truly happy to see anybody comment their thoughts on a project I talk about.
Put "99 PROBLEMS" as your comment if you read the description!
As always, thank you very much for watching and taking time out of your day to discuss music with me, God bless. Isaiah 55:8-12 - Видеоклипы
Around the last sentiment you gave felt like a kind of dismissal of guns in the problems of school shootings, while i do agree that people and how they are treated are a root to the problem that surrounds school shootings and we should be taking with more care like with the examples you gave at the end to help them, however you have to acknowledge that guns are another root of the issue because without them then there would be no such thing as school shootings. I think while we should look towards a way on figuring out what drives people to do them and ways to prevent someone from falling down that path, we shouldn't dismiss the accessibility of guns and the use of them to commit the act of school shootings.
I’m getting a lot of comments like this, so this is what I’ll say: I was dismissive (I think that was astutely described as for how I wanted to come off there) not because I don’t think action via gun laws could be productive - but because I think the debate surrounding school shootings gets funneled into a discussion about guns because it keeps things political. The polarized culture of the United States has gone away from using politics as a means of helping people and turned it into a way to be right and superior. This is an outdated, unproductive, and destructive mindset. So, when I am trying to turn heads away from that conversation, it is not to say I don’t believe a conversation there COULD create change, but because I think the debate in and of itself is not rooted in creating a better life for others (like the one Tyler wants to start), but is about asserting X and Y’s dominant opinion over the inferior (from their perspective) A and B. I really appreciate you guys thinking about this stuff critically and asking about it, and that is my perspective!
I understand what you mean. You could say Tyler the Creators thoughts on School shootings.

Tyler never “glorified” rape. He talked about a subject that most people don’t want to talk about because they’re scared to even bring it up. He was discussing intrusive thoughts via use of a character he created for those older albums, an alternate, darker version of himself that almost everyone has inside of us to a degree, that we don’t allow to take control. He’s allowing emotions and frustrations buried in his unconscious flow out into the music. It’s reflective of the state of his life and his emotions at the time.
say it again louder for the people in the back ‼‼‼‼
was gonna say, the people who do commit awful acts like that are the people who have no where to express these fucked up thoughts or feelings and eventually just go off the deep end because they just feel that ostracized by society that at that point the laws of society mean NOTHING to them
@@yeahright3901 that kinda makes it sound like you think tyler woulda been a rapist had he not made music, youre also just oversimplifying why rapists rape
@@drakebell5649 ...? yeah no shit people do weird shit and things in general for specific reasons. The reason why people lash out is because they have no where to self express themselves.
Yes tyler had the capacity to be a rapist, literally EVERYONE does. Tyler was in a shitty mindset while he was making these tracks but the beauty is he self expressed himself so he at least felt okay with being himself and being a part of society.
Obviously not everyone will become a rapist or whatever but not self expressing these fucked up thoughts CAN lead you down a shitty path depending on your lifestyle. You were not listening to what I was saying lmao
as someone with a disorder that revolves all around intrusive thoughts, Intrusive thoughts aren’t thoughts you actually want to do they’re called intrusive for a reason. They’re never something you want to do and it shouldn’t be seen as a darker side of ourselves everyone has inside Bc they’re nothing more than just thoughts that come and go, I don’t disagree with your point but I just think this is something people need to really understand
this is a crazy title
the thing i hate about sensitive topics like this, is if you dont 110% agree with the majority and be like yeah this is awful they are awful no need to look deeper into it, then people just talk shit and act like youre as bad as the thing it self.
Agreed, thanks for bringing that to light. It is important we continue to push the envelope on what is expected of someone when they contribute to conversations like this! The goal should never be to be right or agreed with, but to understand deeply and continue learning :)

@@Greetings-r6fYOU ARE PROVING HIS POINT, and you don’t even realize it bro. You are the problem, you are a part of the reason why kids shoot up schools.
People just don't know how to really truly love one another. I used to know a kid that was so lonely depressed and distressed that his favorite quote was " I hate life id rather fuckin di3,but not mine,I'd rather homicide over suicide" people strayed away from him because he's was weird..but he just needed a friend and some TLC tender love and care.
I sat with him and just struck a conversation and let him unload his mind. It wasn't easy for him to actually trust me,he thought I was just trying to bully him. But after some time he understood that I just wanted to be around him bc I cared about what he had to say. We discussed many things..music, sexuality, art, growth, lifecycles, science, religion..and a lot of Fight Club, the conversations I had with him are the most meaningful conversations I've ever had with anyone. He opened up about how he was planning to do something very bad at our neighborhood grocery store, but he's said "I was going to start gathering the materials for my plan but then you started harassing me with friendship and I stopped thinking about the whole grocery list and just wanted to listen to Nickelback with you bc no on else likes them anymore" I laughed bc I got nervous and didn't know what to say.
I guess my point is this kind of thinking can happen to ANYONE and we need to take a closer look at all tragedies not just suicid3..when someone goes on a riot spree we need to approach them with the same delicateness as other tragedies.
I like what you said about gun laws..you're absolutely right it's not about who has them. It's about our social climate and how people feel in society esp the young ones? Good video m8
its def about who has them as well, as theyre so easily accessible
@@xenoza02 that's almost exactly my point. Firearms ARE very easy to get (in the US). Legally and illegally. So it doesn't matter who is allowed to have one or not bc if someone wants them they will get them. The guns arent the problem. I've never seen a M16 just stand up on its own and start shooting itself. The problem is ignoring mental health issues as if they will go away if society turns a blind eye. Then we get people that are upset and feeling unseen. Those people get a hold of a gun from their local gas station and then.. tragedy strikes.
I know that ANYONE can commit a horrible mass murd3r, but I also think adolescence have a higher probability because of their developing bodies and psyche. Maybe a annual mental health eval for people 18 below would help recognize the troubled kids faster.
I used to befriend people like that until they'd start making comments like "what if i kidnapped your family and tortured them and you had to choose which one i shot and didn't shoot?" another one started calling me a bitch and a whore for rejecting them romantically , its not as easy as just befriend people especially if you're a girl.
@@elliotstname2709 that's a classic one, growing feelings and then acting like a maniac. I'm gonna say something really controversial but sometimes I'm not so sure if many mentally ill people even deserve to live, like a lot of them just go through life causing damage, hurting others and also themselves in the process. I've dealt with so many people like this, dated one and honestly? I've developed a small hate towards the mentally ill, they didn't choose to be that way but at this point I see them as a walking danger you know? It doesn't help that many of these problems are also genetic, so now they can spread their disease even further into the future and create more miserable people.
Really controversial take from my part but after constantly dealing with people like this, you kinda just want them to disappear and you start seeing how bad a lot of them really are unconsciously.
@@elliotstname2709 literally. it's always "they just need a friend :(" but becoming their friend is impossible. i had a classmate like that, we tried to befriend him but he harassed girls, he was literally a raging misogynist so naturally my girl friends and i would be scared of him. then he somehow found out i was scared of him and purposely started to talk to me about shooting up our school, mind you, i never did anything to him, i was just scared of him because of how he treated people and women and particular. he was also fixated on hitler and nazis, made racist jokes no one laughed at for obvious reasons and ended up befriended my friend's sexually abusive ex boyfriend. how are we expected to love these people when they act like that?
Bro what the FUCK is that title
I don't think OP meant a complete resolution and halt of the school shooting issue, more that Tyler seems to have broken down, and either understood or found the root of the problem behind these school shootings, regardless of what comes after in local news and media such as topics on gun control or arming personnel

I'm not from the US, so seeing all these school shooting incidents from the outside is truly shocking, but even more confusing. What could possibly create a wave of young murderers? And what is the solution to this issue? Is there even a solution in the first place? It's definetely hard for me to feel sympathy for a killer of any kind, but Tyler's (and your's) is an interesting perspective on this subject.
This reminded me of a song by two spanish rappers, Porta and Santaflow, 'voces en mi interior', where they depict the story of a bullied kid (portrayed by Santaflow) who gives into the voices inside his mind (portrayed by Porta) that tell him to set his classroom on fire and kill his classmates. I believe this song sparked little to no controversy tho, maybe because it isn't a sensitive subject over in spain, or at least not at that time, perhaps people didn't perceive the song as a messege in favor of murderers like in Pigs case. idk, I just thought I'd mention that.
Hopefully these incidents will come to an end someday. Great video
It's USA. The gun laws are fucked. In Finland we have super strict law, where if you have any gun (even simple pistol) any officer/other goverment personel can come into your house at any time to check that the gun is in a safe or in the same designated and agreed on place. For example if the gun is agreed to be in a safety locker, but the officer finds it on your bed, they can take your gun permission out for rest of your life. Also you need to have military service done before getting even a permission. I think in America they take guns too lightly and as an everyday object, while in other countries like Finland, you rarely ever even see people with guns (we hate when people come into our house uninvited lol)
@@prod.ajaton2 the gun laws aren't the root of the issues, the indulgence of media and how it affects young minds can be pinned, but rather its much more complex than that, i believe that the over indulgence of media an internet in the US is the real root of the problems, as the internet isnt a safe place. Theres online bullying etc, apart from that theres also issues that exist in their own lives that make the internet their escape, and if their escape from reality is filled with hatred, it further perpetuates the impulsive nature that young kids have with violence, if u live a life full of hate, ur gonna be quite hateful too. The narrative of gunlaws being a root issue is so sloppy and lazy, cause even if we banned guns and any weapon, it doesnt end the impulsive nature and anger that kids have. Theres a whole bigger picture :(
@@funkykong6144 gun control may not be the solution, but it can be a safety measure and the first step to find a solution. No doubt there's a societal/psychological issue underneath the surface that has to be dealt with, but the fact that guns are so easy to access is a problem in itself.
Where I live, the enforcement of the law may not be as strict as finland's, but many people desist from owning guns despite feeling unsafe in their homes because they feel they can become a danger to themselves. You are never safe around a firearm, no matter where it is
dude im from the US and we dont know either. Its probably a mix between the heavy gun culture here mixed with mental illness, and the internet. I knew a dude last year in my sophomore of high school and bro was literally a psychopath. This foo had hard home life and what ive known by foos who went to his middle school. Is that he was always being bullied endlessly. When i met him bro was always on his phone using shit like 4 chan n shi hella he was hella edgy too. he would spend 10s of hours every week to looking at gore vids and he would show people in the class i was in. We reported him hella times to the teachers and office but they never did anything besides take him to the counselor. i also remember he was huge on guns he would on stuff like offer up to look at guns for sell. And i remember the last day i saw him he told some of us in our group he was talking about how he could hurt someone and not feel anything and shit like that and he was talking about school shooters and he explained a story. on how if he would shoot up a school he would block the main exist and lure people out. we were all freaked out and told on him last thing i heard from the teachers is he was put in a hospital. Also mb for the spelling im exhausted.
It's a mental health issue
If I remember correctly, Tyler himself said he actually dislikes this song. I'll try to find where I saw this. But I do think this song is a good perspective on a real issue. It also ties very well with the WOLF album theme along with his trilogy ( BASTARD-WOLF).
he did say this once, might've been the result of the backlash making him think that his intentions with this song weren't delivered properly
Yeah, he said he hate “pigs” and “Buffalo”

I think we need to spend more time not empathizing with people who clearly don't have empathy skills. The fact is that we can not control how hard someone's life is. But we can try to help them before it is too late.
i hate the "americas gun laws are stupid" argument and im aussie, i just think its so dumb
reducing the problem to just bullying is just as dumb. america DOES have a gun problem and gun control should also be in peoples minds when these kids have access to weapons that easily. there's a reason why this is a topic that's only a thing in the US and everyone looks at you all crazy for it.
why shouldn't y'all talk about gun laws and instead about "banning social media" when so many of these massacres have nothing to do with that at all. so many of these massacres are hate crimes or have victims with absolutely no relation to the shooter's life, like sandy hook. how is this "loving one another" mentality gonna prevent a neo-nazi from shooting a church full of black people? a gay club?. so many of these people lack empathy for human lives yet they can buy something that can take them away with so much ease with barely any problems, how is that not a gun issue as well?
Gun control does more harm than good. the vast majority of gun crimes are committed with illegal guns.
the vast majority of self defense cases use legal guns.
Doesn’t take a genius to find out why banning guns or making them harder to get causes more problems

See thats something ive always never understood. People hate everyone who did horrible things. Okay, could make since... except for the fact that there are reasons, of course there arent any good reasons to take others lives, but shootings can be more prevented if we take a look into what is happening, we can be there for them before they do bad things. I feel like bad people still deserve more sympathy. Like, saying you want someone to rot in hell... its just as insane as what they did. Yes they did something wrong, so are people wishing on people to experience those things. I dont think anyone will ever agree with what im saying, thats okay. I do sometimes feel like people hate on bad people too much. We should be trying to understand what happened so we can stop it from happening and so less lives are lost and less people do bad things.
I feel like with pigs, it’s not meant to make you sympathize with school shooters, but instead empathize with them. Big difference.

20:15 Broski, guns ARE the problem. So is bullying, but two things can be true at the same time.. Guns should be harder to get ESPECIALLY for people in the 16-20 age range(avg. age of school shooters).

man i wana hug tyler as someone who’s been bullied and purposefully ostracized
my favorite tyler song never gets any attention it’s about time
the issue with solving mass shootings is that its not possible to solve from the root. the root of the problem is mass shootings are caused by either angry people (as in columbine) or people who enjoy watching others suffer. (as in sandy hook, parkland, and Uvalde) that's not something that is fixable. you cant force people to feel empathy if they don't, so where were at now is at least trying to find a way to limit the damage these people can do, sense there isnt anyway to stop them from wanting to do the damage. that's why Americas poor gun control is the perfect breeding grounds for mass shootings. our capitalistic greed of wanting materials leads us to be angry when its taken away, because now we have less stuff, so gun control essentially cant work until people feel so unsafe they no longer care about material possessions. then mass shootings will stop because you wont be able to kill as Meany people in such a short amount of time.
also the reason why people are mad about "pigs" is because art is viewed by the general public as a mockery of its subject matter. that why art is treated with un-importance is pop culture, and artists are viewed as either pretentious assholes or idiotic nobodies. so when people hear that someone (intentionally, mind you. "pumped up kicks" for example, while culturally viewed in the context of a school shooting, was intended to be an allegory about popularity by the band that made it. so its not viewed as distasteful.) made a song about a school shooting, it comes off as insensitive and cruel.
@@confinedbydigits what are you, steven universe?
they want to watch the world burn because they *have* no empathy
@@confinedbydigits hurt people hurt people, yes, but people who enjoy hurting people do it far more.
Uvalde, parkland, and sandy hook were all the product of mentally ill and psychological disturbed individuals, who simply wanted to just hurt people. nothing made them that way, they just wanted to do it, could do it, and had no one in there way and no process to stop them from doing it. yes, columbine was loosely the fault of the school because of the school culture looking down on anyone who wasn't hot, rich, and athletic, but both killers also presented mental illness so their likely enjoyment of the situation can not be ruled out. hurt people hurt people, but hurt people don't go to there old elementary school and shoot it up for fun. disturbed creatures do.
I'm all for anti bullying measures and improved mental health services, but gun control IS the root of the issue. Tons of countries, such as the UK and Ireland, are doing a pretty terrible job when it comes to mental health services for youth, and yet mass shootings are incredibly rare. I myself live in Ireland, where mental health services are considered inadequate and far behind other EU countries, but school shootings are a non-issue because of how stringent our gun laws are (licenses are required that only can be obtained for very specific purposes, like hunting or target shooting, and you have to receive approval from the police to obtain one). Acting incredulous as to why people would want to talk about gun control when school shootings occur is just unreasonable.

mental health issues exist all across the world, but somehow its only america who has the most slack gun laws, who has all these tragedies. While poor mental health is obviously a cause for school shootings, no sane person is going to shoot up a school on a tuesday afternoon. It shoudln't be dissmissed that guns and americas slack gun laws do play a massive role. (also side note the little rant you made about "banning social media" but "having an online space where kids can express themselves" is very contradictive)
yeah idk, it’s a fact that countries without guns don’t have any school shootings, but Americans always get uptight when u say that shit but it’s statistically true. There have been 0 school shootings in the UK for instance since guns are outlawed, only a select few can have them and the ones that get it illegally do illegal shit with em they don’t go shoot schools up. It ain’t a full solution and yes ik the problem is mental beyond anything but the tools are definitely a factor too. You don’t NEED guns, plenty of countries are getting by and are statistically happier and safer than America and don’t have them
Reminds of how KoRn made the song "thoughtless" about the shooters perspective
Dude you should probably change the title
This is a great video. (Please change the title)
i love how you talked about how people dehumanize them after they do something so horrible and how we have to sympathize for how they feel and what they're going through and how we shouldn't sympathize for what they did
New video title now
Great video dude. This was awesome. I think the line when Tyler was talking about listening to music but they “wouldn’t let me on their team” is a reference to his actual life in high school. He wanted to join the high school band and orchestra but he got kicked out of both because the kids were making fun of him and thought he was annoying. I think it’s kind of a cool reference
There aint no way it’s that deep😂😂
i love wolf so much, pigs is definitely one of my fav songs tyler has ever made
4:12 close, tyler said in an interview wolf is who he wants to be
1 Educate properly your kids
2 stop selling guns to every one
3 LOVE and ATENTION
I love that you made this video. I have the same ideology. Yes it is wrong to do those things but why did you? My mom was scared that I was going to turn out to be a serial k1ller bc I was “fascinated” by them. I just really wanted to know why. And when I look inward and think “what is something crazy that I have thought about due to mistreatment?” And I encourage everyone to apply this question to themselves. Personally I have though about hurting someone who used to steal from me all the time. She doesn’t anymore only bc I moved out. That whole situation is long so I’ll just keep it as that. I am a very kind person, I’ve always been. This isn’t me tryna make myself look better, I just care deeply for everyone, even strangers and animals. My mother really drilled empathy into me, and empathy is so important. I feel bad for everyone who has done something bad. I’m not sorry for the consequences of their actions, I’m sorry for the fact that you had those thoughts and you had to live with them. No one is just telling their friend “I want to hurt someone” and expecting them to actually care, they CANT speak about those thoughts. Same with racists, I’m so sorry that you live with so much hatred in your heart. I’m just sorry for humans as a whole. We could be so great but .. yeah
8:27 ironic shoot down but also this is really cool and its great to raise awarness so if you know someone whos parents treat them wrong at home you can try n comfort them
