    Jeff, I've learned so much from your channels over the past 3 years (or more!!) Been a channel member for 2 years and 7 months. You taught me to patch up my drywall when I couldn't get anyone to show up to do the work for me. I'm really good at it now! You taught me basic wiring... flooring... pex...how to use a grinder on almost anything!! and how to mud walls to near perfection. When my sister died 4 years ago, she left me $5,000 to buy tools so I could set up a decent shop in the basement of a home we'd yet to buy. But here I am... in a 1965 ranch with a full 1800 square foot walk out basement that now has tools picked from the tools in your amazon store... and I'm nearly finished with the first bathroom after moving the washer and dryer upstairs (wiring and plumbing and drywall and tile). Have more rooms to do... the kitchen is next. I've purchased most of my supplies already. So I guess I'm saying thank you for the encouragement, the excellent advice, and videos that are clear enough and thorough enough that even this 60-year-old grandma can figure it out! Be encouraged and look forward to the changes to come in your life. Good luck on the work visa!

      I'm with you onemomsdrm. He has not only taught me a lot of what you referenced. But boy, has he saved us money. Talk about "that's money in the bank". It is. The man has been a blessing in our home. He even makes me want to move to Canada. I mean, America has been a circus for quite some time. Why not? Anyhow, I agree with you and I'm glad to see that there are many like us out there.

    The value of your channel is in actually watching you do the labor and your trial and tribulations through it all because you have the hands on experience and knowledge. Trouble sourcing material and labor is what we are all going through so it is helpful to see that side of it. And whether you are building a bathroom in a church, train station, home or brewery, it really doesn't matter - value is equal. There are many channels that just go around and critque what needs to be done or what the costs will be on X, Y or Z. But what sets you apart, is that you actually do the labor from start to finish. For me, watching a project from start to finish is what I want to see. The other stuff, just doesn't do it for me... So I for one, vote to see the church project through from zero to 100%. Thanks for all that you do!

      While I definitely agree I think people also need to keep in mind that this is his full time home. While it's more satisfying for *us* to see the long DIY process he may not be interested in living in a construction zone for several more years.
      Channel interest vs quality of life debate, I guess.

    I totally agree about working the weekends. I’m 23 and do side jobs outside of my regular job. I’ve done things from vinyl siding, lvp flooring, fencing, and kitchen cabinets. I tell them exactly what materials they need, they go buy it themselves, then I come install it. Easy as that. It’s all skills I learned from either work or your youtube.

      As a female who has been doing remodeling in homes for probably 50 years if you sit and overthink something pretty soon it becomes bigger and bigger and more harder and more scary. Find the thing that will take the least amount of time and the least amount of work and just jump in and do it. If you do it wrong rip it out and do it again that's the only way you learn. Don't overthink things it will get you in trouble.

    Jeff, all's I can say is that if there's anyone that can do it, it's YOU! I'm always tuned in, always learning, and love to send Aloha your way. Whatever decision you make, I know it will be the best one. Thank you for educating us on so much. It goes a long way for those who prefer to sweat and work over passing the job to someone else. It's because of your videos this is possible for so many of us. You do more than you get. So if anyone here on youtube is reading my post. Support Jeff and Crew. It doesn't get any more real than this.

    Good honest advice for people who were playing with idea of getting a cheap church especially with the high cost of parts and difficulty getting labor in 2022. Emotion (and love of tbe idea of living in a churchly mansion) instead of logic keeps trying to drag many of us in the wrong direction in a purchase like this.

    "Nobody wants to work anymore." Meanwhile, labor jobs pay relatively little, have crappy benefits, wear down a person's body, and did I mention the crappy pay? Step-dad is an electrical contractor and keeps a solid number of employees in a relatively small market because he pays enough above the baseline to make it worthwhile to be a journeyman. Exploiting labor isn't as easy as it was pre-pandemic.

    • @shoyrushoyru
      @shoyrushoyru 2 года назад +2

      exactly. people want to have interesting and fulfilling work and careers that keep them relatively safe and minimize the wear and tear on their bodies where they are treated to benefits, proper pay, and most importantly RESPECT. boomer generation tries to call everyone who doesnt want to be used and abused "lazy". poor work and poor worth ethic is promoted by the old generation's traps of low pay, overworking, cutting corners, scamming customers and lack of respect for the employees as well as the customers. they think because thats the world they inherited from their parents that thats the way everything HAS to be and are angry at the younger generations for not accepting it. the younger generation refuses to get abused and the businesses are quick to go to third world "slave" labor so they can treat their employees even more like dirt.

    • @CCOmoe
      @CCOmoe 2 года назад +4

      Absolutely agree- I was a little sad to hear him say this, I love the channel and videos. People DO want to work. "People don't want to work" is such a false narrative. People want to work for jobs that pay them fairly, are fulfilling, and safe! I know plenty of positions that have recently been filled because they are offering livable wages. He mentioned he didn't know what was up with "this" generation- well the generation is realizing corporations and other big employers are exploiting them and they are choosing to live life on their own terms- not the terms of a boss that doesn't care about them!

    Got really lucky on timing (although it didn't feel like it at the time!) on getting our 2nd story renovation done last year. This year I start my basement and I'm glad to hear you agree there is no sense holding off on that. Also, laughing at the comment on the competent zone. I renovated my first house entirely myself (2x bathrooms, basement, kitchen, patio, landscaping) and I'm already getting to the point where half those jobs I wouldn't do myself again.
    Also, totally seeing the side business. Already did $1500 in work and have offers for more and I wasn't even looking for it.

    Hi Jeff, although not a lot of us are likely to achieve a project as big as renovating a 4 bedrooms 4 bathrooms, we subscribers and viewers are here to follow you on this exciting journey which, trust me, will bring us a TON of value. I was really thrilled when you announced the project and so far, you going through the motion of permits, demolition and painting the exterior of the church has inspired me through my own 3 bedroom 2 bath gut and renovation. Although the investment you are facing in terms of time and money is quite big (especially given the current hike in material prices) the inflation on the real estate market will without a doubt be there to reward you. Finally, financing your project through a mortgage loan may be something worth considering to give you some flexibility. Cheers!

    • @TripleIllini
      @TripleIllini 2 года назад

      actual 3head takes on this. you hear that people with ptsd from war or childhood trauma? all you need is a Jeff approved purpose and your problems will go away!
      you're living in a world where your definition of mental health begins and ends at feeling down or a touch of anxiety. having purpose won't resolve schizophrenia or a borderline personality. it won't fix ocd or addiction. it won't treat an eating disorder or psychosis.
      purpose may help...somewhat...with some of these things. but the idea that it will fix everyone's problems because it worked out for you shows a deep lack of understanding of some aspects of mental health

Unfortunately, homeowners in the past have been bit by the "bad installer" who not only did a shitty job but may have caused other damage to the home and the cash up front doesn't cover it. It may be in innocent but expensive cost that could involve insurers.

    I feel pretty lucky that I was still able to get most materials to finish my basement at reasonable prices (US, North West Indiana). Subfloor/drywall was about $1k and all the 20 gauge metal stud/track came out to about $1k. I cut the bathroom from the scope of work, but I'm looking at paying about $3k total to finish about 900sqft of my basement with QUALITY material/soundproofing (excluding electrical.. more on that below). It's going to mostly be my office/recording studio with a nice lounge.
    In terms of contractors, I've been having similar issues. Part of my project has to move the well water pressure tank and softener system, but I can't find any plumber willing to do it because plumbers don't want to touch well stuff and well guys don't want to touch softener stuff. It's brass, so I've been hesitant to DIY.. (my family loves running water). I also have an issue where my town doesn't allow me to DIY my own electrical work. It's a huge pain in the ass because the inspector won't even look at it unless I can provide a license number. Forces me in a bad place to either finish this all unpermitted or pay hefty fees for electrical work I am perfectly capable of doing DIY.

    Inflation doesn’t matter as much if you’re a business owner or contractor in a hot market. You just pass on the costs. It’s the employees at the mercy of the employers that are in trouble. Back in the day there were a lot more business owners and contractor and you could be a lot more nimble with how you make your money. We need to get away from just working for somebody because big businesses are consolidating the labor market. Learn a skill and work for yourself. You really got me thinking, man. Great perspective.

  • @StanlocoInc

    Haha the title had me thinking from your faith, forgetting you are literally renovating a church 😂🤣
    Great stuff Jeff.
    I live in Michigan and I’m doing a little everything to fix up my tiny two bedroom house. It used to be a one room cinderblock cabin in 1952 and had additions poorly done in the early and mid 1970’s.
    Right now I have a 20 year old roof in need of replacing and windows are old and rotten wood. So new vinyl for them. I have to get those done this year or the house may not make it.
    I also wanna totally redo my bathroom which I know how to do, but permits are next to impossible to get in a speedy fashion and I live in a rural area. Its starting to scare the hell out of me with the cost of everything going up and whether the price of repairs and upgrades going above what the market will let me sell her for.
    P.s. I live 3 minutes walk down the road from a beautiful lake and a cute little park, you’d think my property value would be worth more.

    I personally would prefer seeing the start-to-finish of the church conversion. 'Individual project' videos are a dime-a-dozen on youtube, and I honestly think you might dilute your brand. If you look at the 40+ season success of This Old House, it's greatly helped by the studs-to-finish approach of each project. That said, your location, professional availability, and labour are absolutely factors, and it certainly sounds like you have done all applicable due diligence and come to the most viable conclusion for your situation.

    Great video. I'm near the end of it, and I have to say something about the subject of plaster.
    First, you don't have to rip it out to renovate. We have an 1890's house with original plaster and lath.
    I rewired the whole house and didn't have to open any walls to do it. You just have to either fish wire up from the basement, or down from the attic. You use more wire and junction boxes but you don't have the mess, and you save the charm of the original textured plaster.
    Plumbing is a bit trickier, but anything on the first floor is easy from the basement. And almost every old house I have worked on has a decent chase to run new plumbing lines up to the second floor. Usually right next to the chimey.
    Second, quick-set will stick to it no problem. You just need to use a little wood glue. First, mix some wood glue in water. Brush that on whatever open holes or whatever you have to patch. The water will wet the plaster so it doesn't suck all the moisture out of your mud. The glue helps give it some 'stick'. Next, use your left over glue/water to mix your quickset.
    Gives it a bit more grab. (also makes it set up quicker, so keep that in mind)

      Where I'm from if you have junction boxes there has to either be an access door, or they have to be fully exposed.

      @@batmansdad3195 I am pretty sure that is code everywhere. Attached to joists in the attic is perfectly accessible.
      And I am not finishing a basement in an 1890's house. So. all the stuff up in the joists is in plain site and easy to access.

      @@batmansdad3195 Got rid of most of it.
      There are still some bits nailed inside the walls, that wouldn't come out. But no one would know unless they opened the walls to check.
      The house had everything from knob & tube, the old horse-hair two strand, and 12-2 no ground romex. Also had 4 fuse boxes.
      Now it has a nice big breaker box, and brand new romex.
      I'm just glad I got it done before the prices went crazy on wire. And that my best friend is a licensed electrician and did all the panel work for me.

    Hi Jeff my father also passed away 4 weeks ago at 64 with an instant heart attack. This video has given more wisdom than most people get in their lifetime with respect to time. You are 100% correct. Don't wait to get stuff done but also don't live in high debt. I've been a loyal follower since day 1 with you. I believe church conversation process might be full of great info but not entertaining/give you a return on investment. Variety is the spice of life. Coming up with spontaneous videos might make the channel more entertaining but at same time educational. Unfortunately everyone suffers from short attention span in 2022. All the best to you and the family. My dad also wasn't perfect but no one is. He sure was a hard worker and with that has gained my utmost respect. He worked 6 days a week his entire life as a mechanic and I have never seen him take a day off. Thank you for everything you have done for me and my family.

    When I met a friend, 21 years ago, she had bought a new condo and hated her kitchen. It was the first conversation we had over lunch. The kitchen is still the same, she is 62 years old. We have redesigned it 3 times. By the time we get it done, she might enjoy it for what, 4 years? Money is not the issue. I honestly don’t know what is.

    Sub flooring is over $80 dollars a sheet where I'm at. My wife and I were waiting for prices to go down, but not anymore. We purchased a fixer upper for our retirement home in the hopes of giving us something to do with our extra time. But no longer! I simply refuse to pay $80 dollars a sheet for flooring, let alone all the other building materials! We had a meeting with our financial advisor, and we are just going back to what we were doing. We have put our home on the market and have already received 2 offers over our asking price! So we are selling and buying a new home that is already finished to our liking! Will our decision make prices lower? Lol! Of course not! But ,personally, I just refuse! It's just that simple!! It's ridiculous!!

    This generation has seen "One income as a janitor bought a house, car, health insurance, pension, and put two kids through college" from our parents turn into "Maybe if we're married and both working we can afford a down payment when we're 75 if nothing gets worse? Kids are out of the question, but once we have a house maybe a puppy?" for us over the same span of time that we've grown inflation-adjusted GDP by 500% and the wealth of the top 0.1% by huge amounts. We have worse wealth inequality than at the French Revolution. Something is profoundly broken with the way we're distributing resources, and going from 40 hours a week to 60 hours a week certainly improves our lives personally in measurable material ways (while harming them in other measurable ways), but this whole system seems like an obvious scam when the value of our parents' basements literally increase by more per year than the wages we're making while living in them.

    Help us understand why it costs 50,000 to get started. Is septic part of that cost. Please tell me an engineer does not cost 50,000. I currently have plans to build in the country, only permit / inspection is septic I believe. I liked the idea of the Church reno, because it is unique and looks to have many challenges that could help DIY's.

    For anyone thinking about not claiming income on their taxes please consider it can really bite you later on. When lockdowns started there were countless servers unable to pay bills because their unemployment was based on their claimed income. Also banks look at your taxes to qualify you for a mortgage.
