As a Brit, I kinda assumed that we were masters of the fryer. It wasn't until I had a couple of trips to Oz that I realised that the humble 'fish and chip' shop in Australia is worth 10 back in the UK.
I was blown away with the range and quality.

We used to have a place like this here in California that was really good. It had everything you listed and more and was really great quality. The best part is that the owner didn't care a whole lot about money since he retired at a young age and sold the food at a very good price. It was really a shame when he decided to finally close up shop so that he could enjoy his senior years. We need another place like it again.

As much as I like a battered sav, I always get potato scallops. Fair dinkum fish and chip shops will always add an extra potato scallop or two as well. I've got a favourite place in Canberra, when I ask for three potato scallops, I can almost always guarantee I'll come home with five of them.

Greg, In Kiwiland we call a battered Savaloy a Hotdog. To remove confusion we call the Frankfurter in a roll, an American Hotdog. The potato scallop is called a potato fritter. We also get curry rolls and battered meat patties that taste great too. Calamari rings are called Squid rings here. We don't tend to get those yummy looking dim sims or the prawn ones. I tried your Oz fish and chips (or should I say fush and chups) when I was in Melbourne last year. It was very noice. Of course it has to have a generous dollop of Watties Tomato sauce. You will have to come over to NZ one day and try our takeaways (or as we sometimes call it Taak e are ways to give it a local feel).

in buffalo ny our 'fish frys' come with a giant piece of battered haddock (some places offer broiled / blackened / cajun) , the side options are always french fries, coleslaw, potato salad, mac salad, or baked potato, and it always comes with a couple containers of tartar, a lemon wedge and sometimes bread : ) the australian version looks awesome! - cheers - !!!

that scollop part, there juicy. usually the juice is oil hahaha i love u greg u crack me up bro. also the fish has the skin on one side to hold it better while dipping in the batter and frying. you can ask for it to be fully skinned at my chippy but its a little more of a price. u can also ask for them to fry u a fresh fish. british fish and chips has mushy peas, i prefer backed beans or chip shop curry sauce. good tuck in mate lol.

Everyone loves Fish & chips. Here is my tip.
When up north where Greg is ask for a crumbed coral trout. (I am getting a little stiffy just thinking about it.)
Down south in Melbourne where I am ask for a battered piece of Flake. (Flake is normally Gummy shark.)
Oh yeah baby Fish & Chips for lunch.
I really like a hamburger in batter.
And just to throw a spanner in the works.
It is pronounced a Potato Cake, not a Potato scallop.
And you know when the Fish & Chips are good because you don't squeak for a month.

Nice video Greg. You descendants of our convicts should come back to the UK and try our fish and chip offerings. A lot of it is similar to what you get. The fish, potato scollops, saveloys. Plus Yorkshire fishcakes, pea fritters, meat pies etc. Should be fun for you and Bernice 👍🏼

For those who are not aware, chicken salt contains no chicken it is wholly vegetarian seasoning. The other thing in Australia be careful when buying calamari rings. There are 2 types, the real calamari that come from cutting it into rings and artificial ones that are made in a factory, usually from mince. Stick to the real ones.

Brilliant video Greg. Your fish and chips shops are awesome. Oysters in their shells in a fish and chip shop? The most exotic thing we get in the UK is Pickled cockles and mussels in jars!

Watching this most well presented and informative video has made me very hungry. It makes me wish I lived in Australia. Of course with me being British I'd have to have my tomato sauce with it.
