Being out in the middle of a desert with no one around, being a security guard at Black Mesa was probably a pretty cushy do-nothing job 99% of the time... Until the incident.
Exhibit A: Otis

Scary thing to note is that originally Guards were meant to be enemies, abusing their power and weapon possesion to threathen the Scientists because they were blaming them for the incident. There was even a point in the game where you were forced to kill a Guard and take his keycard to access the locked area. I am so glad we got the Guards we know and love today

The hostile guard concept later evolved into the HECU

Ironic how eventually the roles were flipped, since, as seen in Blue Shift, the scientists all seem to have some kind of superiority complex when it comes to the guards. They’re assholes to them lmao

I love the security guard in Half-Life 1, I don't know why but he looks so dead inside. And the 0.52 Alpha Security Guard, my god that face.. he seen some real shit.

I do like how the older models have a police belt, nightstick and imo a much better looking holster, wonder why they got rid of that. Also complete missed opportunity by Gearbox to bring back the nightstick as a unique melee weapon for Barney in Blue Shift.

Pre-release Otis is used for the final game's multiplayer Otis model!
No matter how much he has evolved he still owes us that beer
Otis is a character that needs to return in some form, possibly as a rebel in a rebel base somewhere next half-life game
Oh did you not play Black Mesa: Blue Shift? If not, I totally recommend it. Otis appears as a non-expected hero with good dialogues xDD
If the idea of hostile Barney would've been kept, Half-Life 2's start would go like this:

If only Valve added more variety with the security guards in Half-Life 1 just like they did with the scientists instead of seeing the same security guard every single time... But here we are. I think the Half-Life Extended mod fixed that issue or so I've been told.
Excellent video Rad and the Otis bonus at the end was pretty sweet.
Also Half-Life: MMod adds variety to Barneys. There's even BLACK BARNEY.

Yeah. We see the Gus engineers in the intro but they couldnt bother to just add some scientists with Maintenance worker clothes here and there in the game
Funfact: one of the original assasin/enemy models used the 0.52 Barney face texture for its face. You can find a render of it in RTB Uncorrected Proof

Aw, you didn't mention the HD models from Blue Shift and the PS2 and Dreamcast port. I really like these a lot more, they look much more like real people.

Aw man sorry. I was conflicted about what to include. I went the concept to retail route instead of concept to present route. Also will definitely make other evolution videos too, including Hgrunts :) Thanks for watching!

@@fojisan2398 I also personally prefer them, and the gun ammo discrepancy hasn't really bothered me, primarily because I know next to nothing about guns.
The original models are more stylized though, and there is something charming about them.
@@JoBot__ The LD NPC models look fine to me but a lotta the LD weapons look funky, like the MP5 and the fucking shotgun which honestly just looks straight up bad.
@@fojisan2398 I don't mind the weapon models themselves, but I think the SD hands are particularly unappealing. The HD hand models are really good in my opinion.

Pretty glad you talked about the concept art. I think it shows off some other barney's there as well but they're more as food for aliens to chew on in the concept art.
About the Ted Barney I really like to think the same about Ted being a Black Mesa Security Guard pre-HL2.

Multiplayer Barney isn't wearing red shirt and blue pants, he's wearing shirt and pants. The two colours are customizeable in multiplayer. I guess RadHaz is too young to have played the WON version of Half-Life.
Ive been playing since 2000. Never multiplayer since I had a bootleg CD.
Uhh, you can customize player colors in the Steam version of Half-Life too. It just doesn't update in the preview display for some reason.

E3 1998 barney has to be my favourite
Barney's HL1 deathmatch model didn't exactly have a red shirt. All the MP models had selectable colours, so you could make the clothing whatever colour you wanted. You can select the colours of Barney's shirt and pants separately, but the steam menu doesn't let you preview the changes like the original menu did.

I played a bit of Half-Life 2 and decided to get the first game to understand the story more. The security guard just came off as a generic character. Never would have guessed he was Barney.

Call me sacrilegious, but I kinda prefer the look of the "Ted Barney" guards over the final one, as well as the "HD" & PS2 security guards models. I wish the final guards had different looks to them for the sake of variety, just like with the scientists.
I just wish they got to keep the nightstick (don't understand why they cut that) and have it be useful instead of just being a cosmetic design

In terms of facial appearance, the model at 3:58 looks surprisingly good compared to the others, including the retail one.
