Thank you! This was so helpful in enabling me to identify what all the weird looking fittings in my hot water system were. I had drained my cold water pipes to repair a leaking toilet fitting and created an airlock which stopped all our hot taps flowing. After watching your video I understood that the shower must be fed off the same feed as the hot water cylinder, after the pressure reducing value. So all I needed to do to get water flowing through that part of the system again was to run the shower on cold for a few minutes. Hot water magically restored!

Fantastic. I've seen how you drain the heating side. Those white expansion vessels also need re-pressurising (and I need to do mine, which is similar system to video) and that systems needs draining. Would be great if you can show how that is done and re-pressurising the vessel - if a standing bicycle pump suffices . Thanks a lot.

Great video. I'm wondering which type of cylinder I have in the house I've just moved into. It's a Tribune HE model. I can see a pipe marked "primary coil" towards the bottom of the cylinder so I'm guessing it's an indirect cylinder. Should this be the case? I was told that the boiler provides the heating and the immersion heater provides the hot water but I've just realised I've used quite a bit of electricity in the first month so doing some investigating to try and economise.

Thanks for the great video... Quick question. I am about to purchase/have fitted an Unvented Indirect Hot water system in our two storey house, our current cold water mains feed to the old water tank in the loft is 15mm. The new 22mm feed we are looking to replace and relocate will run up into the loft first and then back down to the new tank in the airing cupboard. Do you see going up into the loft and then back down a problem? Thanks in advance..

    Hi,
Just had a new boiler with unvented cylinder installed...it is all working fine so far.
I have been scanning the installation documents that came with the Vaillant system and it shows the expansion vessel connected to the safety pressure reducing/pressure relief valve on the cold water inlet.
However, my installer has connected the expansion vessel to tee'd off connection from the hot water outlet. Apart from the fact that this is contrary to the instructions, is there a problem with this?

Hi... i liked the video and i have got a problem with my hot water tank... at first, the element in the tank had been broken a couple of days ago and i had turned the valves off, then i have replaced it with the new element. When i turned the valves on, no hot water coming through the system but hot water getting heated and no hot water coming... i can't figure it out... what is wrong with the hot water supply? Do you have any idea about it?
    Thanks a lot

Hi James, excellent video as always.
I need to remove a downstairs rad on my unvented system. Is it just a case of
    1. Both rad valves turned off.
    2. Heating system fused spur off.
    3. Drain rad and remove from wall.
    4. Crack open rad valve to release heating circuit pressure.
    5. Cut 10mm copper microbore and fit 10mm speedfit stop end.
    6. Repeat for other end rad pipe.
    7. Open filling loop and repressurize to 1 bar.
    8. Bleed rest of downstairs rads.
    9. Check for leaks.
    10. Fused spur back on.
Is there any problems having 2 8m dead legs after I've done this as no way I can get the pipes out to the tee.
    Have I missed anything?
    Many thanks,
    Carl 😊

Just a quick question for you, regarding direct unvented hot water cylinder, is the expansion vessel coming after the non-return/anti-contamination valve, am I right? Also, if I connect it to the hot water coming from the boiler, basically, just to put a 'Tee' on the 22mm pipe for hot water from the boiler and connect it to the outlet of the cylinder, is it going to be ok ? Would appreciate your help. Cheers !

technically the pressure relief blow off from the tundish should have 300mm before a bend or 90 degree, also a secondary domestic pump is mostly fitted to allow hot water from your taps to be more instant without a long draw off, this is either piped up with a tap in from the cylinder and tee'd into the last hot water outlet, or if no tap in, last tee into the cylinder cold feed :)

We have a corroded cold water compression valve and it appears that its dripping water into the tundish. We're losing about 12litres/day. I've had two plumbers around but they just want to replace the whole tank, and one who would only quote to replace the tank or completely strip it out and replace our aging system boiler.
I've decided just to do it myself with my uncles help. But as the boiler itself will need replacing in the next two years, I'm curious about whether we need the cylinder or would be better off with just a combi boiler instead. I've seen that a lot of people do this to save space, but I also saw that unvented cylinders are installed in a lot of 4bedroom new builds. I just don't know which way I should go when it comes to replacing the boiler.
    Any advice would be welcomed.

  • @mattkainicram
    @mattkainicram 10 лет назад

it may have a faulty pressure relief valve or the air bubble at top of tank has depleted, simply turn off mains into the tank, open hot water outlets around the house until its stopped, turn off the taps and open the supply you turned off. this will then purge the tank leaving an air bubble. air the hot water through the taps and turn off once all pulsating has occurred.

Great video. Question, so to turn off the hot & cold water to fit isolation valves before my taps in a bathroom, I turn off the main stop cock for the cold and then the hot water outlet on top of the tank. Also turn off the boiler. I then open the hot & cold taps at the lowest point in the house to drain the water. I fit the isolation valves. I then turn the cold main stop cock on, open the hot water outlet on top of the tank, turn on the boiler and vent any air in the taps?
    Or
Do I just turn off the mains stop cock, and open the hot & cold taps to drain any water. As the hot feed from the tank needs the cold water main to 'push' the hot water out top of the tank?
Sorry for the long question, but I have only previously plumbed on a combi system.

I don't understand why they put expansion vessel in main cold supply? The water expand when it's heated so the expanding would happen in hot water side not the cold, so how the expansion vessel would take the expansion while it's on cold side??
Sorry I'm not expert like you guys n might be funny question for you but really didn't get it :)

U could technically put it anywhere on the line after the composite valve , you put it directly on the valve so that you dont get random cold spots in your hot running water, regardless of whether or not the water in the exspansion vessell is hot or cold it doesn't matter as the heated water in the cylinder has expanded as it warmed up this taking up more space and intern creating more pressure

South sun There is a problem with the white board explanation relating to this which led to me being confused me too ( I love the white board stuff by the way ) and that is because it’s edited and it’s therefore jumpy as he’s drawing ,it misses out him actually drawing the 2nd expansion tank on the hot water side of the set up it just suddenly appears without any mention . I think it would be better if he spent longer on the white board and talked and drew it in real time without the editing as the white board stuff is really helpful especially if these videos are aimed at people trying to learn which I think they are .
