  • This video is all about the white expansion vessel next to your unvented hot water cylinder. The potable or drinking water expansion vessel. We show you why they need to be installed, how they account for hot water expansion and what can happen when they fail.
We also introduce to you the new Global Water Solutions or GWS expansion vessel. Made with butyl rubber and thick metal wall, these beasts are at the top of their game in potable, drinking and standard water expansion. Remember you need to be G3 qualified to work on pressurised systems. Enjoy!

James, you said all expansion vessels have a 3/4male fitting, the last 3 I've fitted have been 22mm nut and olive! Absolute pain in the arse when I had the 3/4 female fittings ready! Incidentally, two of the EV's had been fitted to the balanced cold!! OMG!!! The temp & pressure relief valve stopped the cylinder from blowing!!

Thanks for this vid. Good explanation. My pressure vessel (potable, unvented system) fails regularly, causing the pressure relief to go. Plumber comes (I've used different ones for 2nd and 3rd opinions) and says, 'yep, I'll need to replace the pressure vessel'. This happens about once a year, and then low and behold, it lasts a while and fails again. I asked plumber after plumber why this keeps happening, perhaps another more systemic fault -with the multi valve perhaps?? But everyone just says replace the pressure vessel... Oh, and they tell me off for the pressure vessel not being mounted on the wall... it starts off on the wall but when its gets heavy with water (when it fails), it falls off. Also leaving on the floor makes it easy to feel how heavy it is and tell when its getting near needing replacing again!
Any ideas of what else could be causing the vessel to repeatedly fail please? Then I can suggest this to the next plumber (when they're available after Christmas!)

James only just latched on to your site, excellent, really great tips and love the way you cut through all the nonsense. Im retiring from my Job as a Mechanical Surport Engineer for a big Pharma company. I trained as a welder so Im handy with the blow touch, but im trying to get more clued up with the heating side of things, so when watching your video on Gravity Feed Heating Systems (The one with your symatic on the big piece of wood, what would have been handy for me in that Video would have been to draw in the doemestic water sytem side (The feed for the taps).ie where would the expansion go from the emersion heaterAlso when you were fitting the new GWS expansion vessel why did you choose to mount it on the floor ? and lastly the expansion vessel was white what is the Red vessel behind you used for.Cheers Bob P.S. Thanks for the video. Any reason why 15 mm speedfit couldn't be used instead for the feed to the expansion vessel? As for all the comments about Legionella, a simple answer is to make sure the water is heated to 63C at least once a week.

    • @L.C.Sweeney
      @L.C.Sweeney 2 года назад

You should never use plastic fittings near a boiler as they can fail under high heat and pressure circumstances.
You cannot simply heat your system to 63 degrees Celsius once a week. Legionella can develop quicker than that. Not to mention that the water may be 63 degrees when leaving the boiler but it won't be 63 degrees when it enters your and the water at the bottom of your HWC may never reach 63 degrees, even if you have set the boiler thermostat to 65 degrees.

Pressure vessels are best on the cold feed to the cylinder as it is cool there. Having one on the hot side directly off the top of the cylinder puts the vessel at higher temperatures. This reduces the life of the vessel.

when the expanpsion vessel is installed on the cold mains supply, in between the combination valve and the unvented cylinder inlet, the water temperature should be relatively low, and if it is installed vertical, with the pressurised air end at the top, will the water passing it cause a “Venturi effect” and change the water contents inside the expansion vessel ? and if the cold mains supply and the expansion vessel are insulated it should slow down the temperature increase from the ambient air, I am not an expert, so if any body can educate me, I am always happy to increase my knowledge, and for every body.

@@daibhiseaghdha153 even though on a main supply the length of the pipe work can still be considered a dead end. It should be as close as practicable. During a water services legionella risk assessment it will state that this needs to be upright too. This can be found in HSG274 supporting documents.

I've often wondered if the actual water in the expansion vessel ever changes, as it seems to be trapped in there with only a single 22mm pipe feeding the vessel ( and in this case, it's a fairly long pipe). If this is the case, how potable is that water after a long period of time. Is there any element of stagnation within the vessel and if so, does a larger vessel compound the problem? PS: Wasn't 'potable' replaced by 'wholesome'? Have a great weekend. Love the videos.

Since 2013 the UK’s Heath and Safety Executives HSG274 states that newly fitted expansion vessels should only be the flow through type and must be fitted vertically. Failing to do this will contravene their Approved Code of Practice L8 and ultimately the Health and Safety at Work etc. act 1974. This relates to the control of legionella bacteria in water systems. Couldn't care less about a crApple watch. I came here to learn about expansion vessels work and how old one failed.

Plumbers don't take into account that in this video you have created approximately a 2.5 metre dead leg on the cold mains that overtime will stagnate. Not all plumbers install the vessel onto the combi flow valve assembly, some vessels are installed off of a tee piece. Flow through expansion vessels up to 150 litres should be an option that the end user should be aware of. It's about time Heatrae, Geldhill and the rest took notice. Even the rubber lining of the flexi connector which appears in your video unless WRAS approved, have been found to harbor bacteria, maybe you should make installers aware of this when called out to replace a leaking flexi.

Good comment but what's the solution? The whole industry endorses these methods...

plumberparts L8 Legionella risk assessments highlight the dead legs on hot and cold water systems in which recommendations are made to clients which should result in buildings and systems becoming compliant. Ultimately these buildings are audited with the owners becoming responsible for all those that use the building. An outbreak of Legionella resulting in death could lead to a prison sentence for those negligible. WRAS and L8 need to become closer then that would lead manufacturers to produce WRAS/L8 approved components in all areas of installation. There are some which cross reference the two industries already such as category related double check valves/rpz valve's.

Yes Tony....as ever it's lovely to quote L8 etc....but what about the physical change to this install or the improvement of the products we as plumbers have to install? I'd say nearly every potable water expansion vessel is non-compliant under the stringent terms described above. Perhaps an internal feed pipe to the expansion vessel causing a small amount of flow could help... By the way I've measured the pipe run (as it's in my house) and it's under 2.5meters.....but still the problem is there industry wide!

plumberparts LOL, taking a guess at the dims, as far as the flow through one's are concerned these could become an additional option to your clients ? Easier to site and fit more than you think ! As a rule of thumb anything over 100mm is classed as a deadleg, although there are variants. Being a 30+ year plumber and 10 in the water treatment industry, L8 isn't really covered as much by manufacturer's and being honest it should run in line with WRAS approved installations. RPZ valve courses would be advantageous for you. Keep up the good work.

Solution is as simple as not creating 2,5 m long dead leg. At least run cold main nearby and do as short T-branch as possible, use "Reflex Flowjet" vent, or an in-line expansion vessel with two ports that will run water through it.
