- Nine months. Four oceans, five continents. Over 40,000 nautical miles. There's a reason why they call the Volvo Ocean Race the world's toughest ocean challenge - and here it is. A trophy desired by so many, but lifted by so few, every three years, the best sailors on the planet step out of the comfort zone to truly test themselves against Mother Nature.
I come back to this video, again and again. Whenever I'm having a tough time with my studies, or social life, or in sailing. Without fail, it leaves me with a smile on my face and inspires me to do something greater than myself, and to leave everything behind and do something that I truly love. Thanks to this video, I've already raced from San Francisco to San Diego offshore, and am hoping to do it again this summer with the addition of the Pacific Cup or Transpac Tahiti race. And of course, I hope for an Ocean Race in my future.
Spectacular video. Bravo to whoever wrote the "unforgiving ocean" monologue... just about brings me to tears every time.
The onboard reporters did a masterful job of showing the land world why we sail, and the cruisers why we race. VOR set itself out to be about the sailors, the human story, and this masterfully edited piece shows that beautifully.
No argument Stuart....a wonderful video. I've been a sailing fanatic since childhood. Mind you, in rough seas shots......my thoughts immediately go out to the incredibly courageous heroes (made up of trained volunteers no less) of the RNLI. How they relentlessly perform rescues in the North Sea and around Great Britain.....for nary a dollar, let alone a prize dollar.....I feel is THE most admirable of sailors. If I may quote from the rescue helicopter pilot (unable to lift survivors due to violent waves) who was at the Penlee lifeboat disaster, of the Solomon Browne crew "The greatest act of courage that I have ever seen, and am ever likely to see, was the penultimate courage and dedication shown by the Penlee [crew] when it manoeuvred back alongside the casualty in over 60 ft breakers and rescued four people shortly after the Penlee had been bashed on top of the casualty's hatch covers. They were truly the bravest eight men I've ever seen, who were also totally dedicated to upholding the highest standards of the RNLI." If you are unaware of this disaster "both vessels were lost with all hands; in all, sixteen people died including eight volunteer lifeboatmen".Any sailor....worth his sea legs....donates....annually....to the RNLI. Bless them all !
So glad that we live in a modern age where coverage of such an event can happen.

I too would love to see it more often but considering the cost and the logistics I doubt it could be done so well. And yes I miss checking the race first on the computer. Roll on the next edition

This a good video? Guys, seriously, this is like Blender effect. Messing video bits and pieces. Random pics, too many cuts no real story in the images. Sorry, realy bad video this. Text is good, but please remix agian, now before the blender was turned on.
