Interesting as I have worked on very few at the GM dealer. I was surprised it did not fill the screen edge to edge and would be nice to see rear facing camera action. Thank you Dean! I'm waiting to receive the rear facing (and side mounted) cameras, will do another video for those soon! For the OBD port yes you are correct, it uses Bluetooth (video on that coming too) I will try not to hit any red flip cover switches in the meantime! LOL thanks for watching friend! (by the way I always wanted to get my SAE cert and never did went thru with it, congrats on achieving Master tech level!)
The Master tech level or any certification last 5 years. Like a dummy, I took all 8 test in the spring or fall but instead of 60 questions on each test, 40 questions on the re-certification test. It last five years and I have kept all mine by going back in 5 years, sometime 6. They don’t take it away. If you are current in all 8 test, you are allowed to take “L1” advanced emissions. It is 100 questions and I missed one. I passed “P2” and “B2” for parts & body/paint. But you have to have 2 years of actual work experience with a letter from the manager. There is only 5 types of questions so Master them and learn how to read in a test book and you can take pay & take 1 or 8 test. It is draining for one night but I don’t have to take them anymore. Not bad for a farm kid who never went to trade school and high school didn’t even have shop!
Awesome! yeah your are really gonna like it and will attrack plenty of attention from your passengers lol I get questions on it all the time since most people haven't experienced a HUD in real life..
Would definitely not recommend watching movies when driving LOL! but somehow I can see this becoming a normal practice as cars get closer to full autonomy with probably Tesla being closer to this goal..
Yeah I really think the software interface part of this HUD is what makes it's fun and special, others I played around with have little to no customization..
Hi Jock! it's coming bud, there are a couple players in the market developing this, I'm keeping a close eye on it so I can review them for you guys, stay tuned. Cheers!
Nice review, thank you. The form factor of the unit is large enough to clutter the top of the dash. Too bad they did not flatten out that big bulky projector or relocate most of the electronics to a remote location and just left the sensor, projector, and screen on top of the dash.
Thanks Missan! but yeah you know I think since this is the 1st generation of this device, we will probably see smaller and more sleek versions as they develop them further, one viewer even suggest making them in a few different colors to blend in with interiors that may not be black which I also think is a great idea. Thanks for watching and commenting bud!
@@AlexAutoFun Yes, technology moves fast and chances are they will. Looking back at the glass product, it was hard to keep the phone cool under the TX sun.
@@missaneido7417 Interesting I didn't think about that with the Glass one. I actually already get alerts of phone overheating because my phone mount places my phone under direct sunlight. I'm in California and we been getting hit with crazy heat lately and that's with the screen off ugh...
@@AlexAutoFun .. Have you tried tinting your windscreen with a ceramic or nano ceramic tint? That cuts heat significantly.. The nano ceramic cuts heat even more than the ceramic. Hi Jordan! yeah I think that we are going to see more and more HUDs on cars standard from factory or at least as an option. I have a stand alone full color HUD that does all this and cost under $50. It has worked great for the past two years... GPS too It has speed, direction, distance, time, voltage, and an over speed alarm.. Head up Displays are great, cops recommend them. Just don't buy into hype.
Hi Mark! that is awesome! I have other HUD's reviews coming but nothing close to the Hudway drive, glad to hear you found that that does all of this for that price, please share the make and model so I can add to my list to review? Thanks man!
I got it off Amazon. The only thing I found was a HUD that's identical as far as looks and function but only in blue and white colors. Mine says "Pyle" on it and I don't see it in their catalog. Look for L-1 at least that's what the blue and white one. My car is not OBD so I can't use a Hudway.
@@Discoworx Hi Robert, he is referring to the LCD type (think of the older LCD watches we used to have growing up) here are two versions of them amzn.to/3AuQRGo or amzn.to/3IvDMzF However they are definitely limited in capability (no phone mirroring, no turn by turn directions, no waze, no messaging, etc) however this type of HUD's are a good option for those that do not need all the bells and whistles of the Hudway. @@markmeeker2300 Hi Mark! thanks for sharing the info, yeah I seen this type of HUD's before, they are definitely limited in capability (no phone mirroring, no turn by turn directions, no waze, no messaging, etc) however I agree with you, this type of HUD's are a good option for those that do not need all the bells and whistles of the Hudway. If you ever decide to try the Hudway, it does not require OBD port, it connects to your phone using the APP to drive it. Hope this helps and thanks for watching bud!
@@AlexAutoFun Yes, the SL2 has everything I need for filming and photography. The only thing I kinda wish it had was a top LCD screen to quickly see settings. Great video!
Looks nice but speedometer circles are pretty dumb when you have speed number already - it should be customizable tachometer instead. Customizable RPM bar + Speed number are the main things to see.
There is one view that I actually use quite a bit where are all you see is the speed (no circle) which makes it looks super clean, I don't think I showed that on this video. But I'm working on a follow up video showing more details (using the OBD dongle). Which should enable the Hudway drive to display the RPMs and other car stats (I track my cars, so I'm curious to see this thing in action next time I take out to autocross). One thing I noticed on the App, it appears to let you submit message to Hudway, so hopefully as more people get this thing we can ask for specific gages styles or my dream of being able to create and load your own gauge..
Most of these things are pretty meh, but this one actually looks really good. I was already digging it and then I saw the part about mirroring apps... :O
Yeah I agree AsleepAtTheKeys! It vert impressive in real life, not on the hud portion of it but like you said the capabilities that they are building into this device, I can't wait to see what else they add to it..
What is the difference between this device and placing my phone on the dashboard? You still have to look DOWN and away from the road to look at the information.
It is true, but at 3:04 it shows the driver's viewpoint. When looking through the display one would see the dashboard or the hood of the car, not the road. So even if the glass was not transparent it would not block the view of the road.
@@nikolaosberatlis3942 Hi Nikolaos! the view at 3:04 mark was shot with my Canon SL2 at about chin level so I could see while driving, the clear portion is adjustable to adjust to match your height so the display will be show over the road. But I do think this will vary from car to car, I know on some cars the seat height is adjustable so you can get the best view but on some cars the seat height it set limiting how much you can adjust your view if your too tall or too short..
I think you should add the infrared camera and give an honest review of that. It's expensive, but it's cheaper than other independent infrared camera set ups.
Hi C.S. Allsman! Yeah I plan to review that add on, I'm really curious to see how well it performs (will be the first true night vision system I review). I'm currently working on the side camera add ons, that video will be coming out soon and the night vision camera will be next. Stay tuned and thanks for watching bud!
You're welcome jon! ah regarding direction of travel and cost, no by default it does no unless you use the mirroring function and use it with an App like Waze or Google Maps. I imagine they could add those features without mirroring on the next APP update if enough people request them (the app has an option for requesting additional features) Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
You're welcome DonMANFREDI! Ah yes there are more affordable version like this two versions amzn.to/3AuQRGo or amzn.to/3IvDMzF They don't have the full capability of the Hudway Drive but I think this type of HUD's are a good option for those that do not need all the bells and whistles of the Hudway. I actually have some reviews coming up on those too. Hope this helps and thanks for watching bud!
Hi Franck! it does not, however there are 2 ways you can make it show it, one would be to use the mirror function so you can display Waze or Maps which do have the speed limit. The other way would be to submit that feature request using the app button for submitting requests, I imagine if enough people ask for that feature they may add it in the next update. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Hi allan! Ah yes I remember the Navdy, I really wanted one when it came out but I couldn't afford it at the time. It was a great idea and I think they were first on making an aftermarket HUD of this caliber, really wish they had been successful and still on the market..
Hi Andy! yes I'm able to run Android Auto at the same time (the Hudway app runs in the background) I can also use my phone while connected (previous versions of android auto locked you out of your phone). Hope this helps and thanks for watching bud!
That's actually a great idea, specially now that interior colors are more available than ever before, would definitely help it to blend in with the interior..
Hi Leafson! yeah that's probably the biggest advantage of an OEM HUD since it projects the image directly onto a prepared windshield (normal windshields not HUD ready suffer from double image and low reflective surface creating a dim image) well that and that is somewhat hidden from view since it's built on to the dash. Hopefully more car brands will start offering it as an option when ordering a new car you know. Cheers!
@@AlexAutoFun I hope so too, I would 100% option in for it. I have Ceramic Window Tint on my car and i think its super reflective. I just bought a Heads up Display that projects onto the windshield so I shouldnt have the double image right? Im not sure how it would work but if it doesnt work then oh well.
Hi Leafson! The double image happens from the construction of the windshield, however there are some films like this one amzn.to/3DjLZHN that some people have used to attempt to reduce it on DYI HUD projects. Hope this helps, Cheers!
@@AlexAutoFun oh Cool, Thanks for sending that link. Yeah i think the one I bought comes with one, I just hope i dont have to use it. I feel like it would stick out like a sore thumb

Hi , Thanks for the detailed video. One question around mirroring. How do you keep the Device connected to Mobile Data when its using Hudway WiFi? The internet connectivity goes off for me and I am unable to navigate using Waze etc. Any guidance would be really helpful.
Hi Go Adi! My phone keeps connected to mobile data since that is a separate transmitter/receiver (4G) than the Wifi. So the internet comes from the Phone's connection with my service provider and the Hudway gets the Wifi from my phone. If are still having issues try contacting Hudway for tech support they may have other suggestions. Hope this helps and thanks for watching bud!
Hi randal! ahh not yet, but I imagine that may be next as the car version is selling really well, if they do end up producing a version for motorcycle I will let you know my friend!
Hi Agent Sony! I'm waiting on the OBD adapter, as soon as I get it and confirm it works good (I will have a video on it) I will add the link to the adapter. Stay tuned bud and thanks for watching!
Got mine about 2 years after pledging on indie gogo. Worked for a week then sporadically failed to turn on, then kept losing connection to the phone, then loop booting perpetually. Now only turns on if I press the projector part of the device down hard onto the base. Apparently power from the base is transfered to the projector via a connector (as seen early in the video above). Over time, the flexible base becomes its own Archiles heel as the connection between the base and projector becomes weak with time as the plastic warps. The designers should have just kept the base unpowered and plugged the microusb directly to the projector portion rather than having to interface with the base first.
Hi Ainur! sounds like your system should still be under warranty since it's fairly new, try contacting Hudway for support but I do think the idea of a having the cable go directly to the Hudway instead of the base (specially since I usually don't remove my display off and on, which seems to be the only advantage of having the cable plug into the base) Maybe they can offer two versions later one for those who want to remove it on and off and those that don't need that feature you know..
Hi ovinep96! ah interesting idea.. the screen has several special coatings so the device won't reflect the same on a windshield but there are some films like this one amzn.to/3DjLZHN that may be able to substitute for the original Hudway screen. Hope this helps, Cheers!
Hi pHD77! take a look at aprox the 2:35 mark where i cover installation, the HUD came with this little plastic clips with double sided tape to attach the cable to the dash but I just ran mine along the seams and edges of the Corolla dash so it blends in a little. Hope that make sense and thanks for watching bud!
Hi E. Warren! it's an add on optional device that is coming (I'm currently waiting for mine, once I get it I can test it out and let you guys know how it works and if it makes sense to add to the Hudway. Stay tuned bud!
Hi CB! Nope, Carplay or Android Auto use graphic interfaces that are not designed for HUD use so they are not compatible with the heads up display, but I think I would be need if later on either Google or Apple decide to make them compatible with HUD devices. Hope this helps, Cheers!

Hi Bobby! You actually read my mind! I'm looking into the follow up video showing the other accessories for this HUD including one that works almost like what you are describing, stay tuned bud!
The Hudway people do have a proposed NightVision camera that plugs into their Hudway Drive. It is not cheap! The last time I happened to look at it, at that time it was over $800. But the real annoyance is that the actual Drive product is still not in my hands. I ordered it nearly 2 years ago! As I told the Hudway team, the WW2 Manhattan Project (the atomic bomb) took only 2 years to complete, grrrr, some idea of time relatively there!

Just by a new Mazda, this comes on a couple of trim levels for each vehicle. It's awesome.
Hi 85aircrew! Wow that is awesome, I didn't know that. I really hope more manufacturers start to offer this option from the factory...
Yeah but what if folks can't afford the higher trims? I could only afford up to the Select with my current credit

Awesome! yeah your are really gonna like it and will attrack plenty of attention from your passengers lol I get questions on it all the time since most people haven't experienced a HUD in real life..
You better be patient. I ordered it on Indiegogo on October 2019 and I still don't know when I'm going to get it after many delays

Hi your videos are great.Does it have a seperate wire harness to plug into the ignition wires instead of pluggin into the cig slot?
Thank you Oxfordnights! Ah there is no hardwire kit available for it yet, but I imagine if there is enough demand Hudway could release one. Cheers!
Screen mirroring looks nice. Now we can all watch movies while we drive. With the android hack I guess
Would definitely not recommend watching movies when driving LOL! but somehow I can see this becoming a normal practice as cars get closer to full autonomy with probably Tesla being closer to this goal..

Love how it’s customizable like an Apple Watch
Yeah I really think the software interface part of this HUD is what makes it's fun and special, others I played around with have little to no customization..
Good review!
Thanks jacorn01!
This type of technology would be awesome to see make its way into motorcycles. Instead of a dash, have a HUD on the windscreen
Hi Jock! it's coming bud, there are a couple players in the market developing this, I'm keeping a close eye on it so I can review them for you guys, stay tuned. Cheers!
You are vampire 😆
They also make a helmet mounted version for motorcycles
I put llumar air 80 (ceramic) you can't tell it's there. Since I put that up, my dashcam isn't as hot in direct sun. And I live in the tropics..
@@mpcp27 Hi mpcp27! I have applied ceramic to my car's paint but I haven't heard of ceramic tint for the windshield interesting, is it actual tint? here in California there are super restrictive on it, front windshield is a big no no, and for some reason they been enforcing that hard around my area ugh (not to mention their random checkpoints for Smog inspection and exhaust loudness) they joys of living in California LOL..
This is the next step in the right direction, but I promise people should wait for the next generation or atleast a price drop on these
Hi Jordan! yeah I think that we are going to see more and more HUDs on cars standard from factory or at least as an option. I remember when the Navdy came out a few years ago, I wanted one but at $799 it was out of my budget and now we have the Hudway Drive at half that price, so I can definitely see the technology getting cheaper and better with time. Thanks for watching bud!

Hello i love your videos and review are really helpful. I wanted to ask does the side camera record and can you review the video if in an accident.
Thank you Nisarg! Ah regarding recording, nope, the Hudway is just a display system. If you need recording capabilities with a side camera here are two good options ruclips.net/video/u7jhNVtxQdM/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/8i_CVpPj3Dg/видео.html Cheers!

That mustache wouldn't be allowed around my wife Ill tell you that right now. Great review.
Haha! thanks Ben!!
I have a stand alone full color HUD that does all this and cost under $50.
It has worked great for the past two years... GPS too
It has speed, direction, distance, time, voltage, and an over speed alarm..
Thanks man!
Please share a link. I'm interested.
Want this HUD. I have the SL2 as well. I love this model from canon.
Hi The Bear! Yeah I really like my SL2, I actually bought it refurbished of the canon website and was able to save some money that way too lol
@@AlexAutoFun Yes, the SL2 has everything I need for filming and photography. The only thing I kinda wish it had was a top LCD screen to quickly see settings. Great video!
nice handles
Thank you Ben! I appreciate that bud!
@@AlexAutoFun Yes 100%, do you think that it supports only OBD version of 2008+ year? or below as well
Holy Stache!!

@@nikolaosberatlis3942 Your phone is not transparent
Thank you great info.... does the hudway give direction of travel ie north south etc and cost

Does this show the speed limit of the road your driving on (UK)
Hi Franck! it does not, however there are 2 ways you can make it show it, one would be to use the mirror function so you can display Waze or Maps which do have the speed limit. The other way would be to submit that feature request using the app button for submitting requests, I imagine if enough people ask for that feature they may add it in the next update. functions just like my old Navdy HUD. I wonder if Hudway bought the company.
Hi allan! Ah yes I remember the Navdy, I really wanted one when it came out but I couldn't afford it at the time. It was a great idea and I think they were first on making an aftermarket HUD of this caliber, really wish they had been successful and still on the market..
Question: can you simultaneously run HUDWAY DRIVE when your phone is connected to Android Auto/CarPlay?
Hi Andy! yes I'm able to run Android Auto at the same time (the Hudway app runs in the background) I can also use my phone while connected (previous versions of android auto locked you out of your phone). Hope this helps and thanks for watching bud!

Hi Mason! Yes you ca, remember the Bluetooth standard was developed to allow multiple devices to be connected at once. Cheers!
It ain’t cheap but it’s definitely at a reasonable price
It would be beneficial to order any color of base to match the interior any vehicle, it might save a side window, ..
That's actually a great idea, specially now that interior colors are more available than ever before, would definitely help it to blend in with the interior..
Looks good, I wish I wasnt able to see the glass panel. unlike Mercedes-Benz where its just the number on your window.
Hi Leafson! yeah that's probably the biggest advantage of an OEM HUD since it projects the image directly onto a prepared windshield (normal windshields not HUD ready suffer from double image and low reflective surface creating a dim image) well that and that is somewhat hidden from view since it's built on to the dash.

Great review..one question..do they make this for a motorcycle?? It would be awesome for such an application
Hi randal! ahh not yet, but I imagine that may be next as the car version is selling really well, if they do end up producing a version for motorcycle I will let you know my friend!
Was looking for the link for the OBDII adapter that will work with the HUD.
Hi Agent Sony! I'm waiting on the OBD adapter, as soon as I get it and confirm it works good (I will have a video on it) I will add the link to the adapter. Stay tuned bud and thanks for watching!
The mustache makes the review.
Thank you ironroad! I appreciate it bud!
Hi Ainur! sounds like your system should still be under warranty since it's fairly new, try contacting Hudway for support but I do think the idea of a having the cable go directly to the Hudway instead of the base (specially since I usually don't remove my display off and on, which seems to be the only advantage of having the cable plug into the base) Maybe they can offer two versions later one for those who want to remove it on and off and those that don't need that feature you know..
great if in the future can ad skins or design it in an app, or something
can be linked not to a phone, and put as an extension of an XTRONS sterero?
Wonder if its possible to remove the screen and reflect on the windshield. That would be cool for a restomod
Hi ovinep96! ah interesting idea.. the screen has several special coatings so the device won't reflect the same on a windshield but there are some films like this one amzn.to/3DjLZHN that may be able to substitute for the original Hudway screen. Hope this helps, Cheers!
Hi Does this give approximate speed without connecting to the obd plug. Thanks
Hi Rbta! yes it does (it gets the GPS speed from the App on your phone) Hope this helps, Cheers!
@@AlexAutoFun That’s great. Will order. Thx

So what have you done to "hide" the power cable for this HUD device?
Hi pHD77! take a look at aprox the 2:35 mark where i cover installation, the HUD came with this little plastic clips with double sided tape to attach the cable to the dash but I just ran mine along the seams and edges of the Corolla dash so it blends in a little. Hi Jose! I put the link to the HUD in the video description along with the discount code. Hope this helps, Cheers!
I wonder if it's possible to use that app through Android auto or Apple car play. So you can use the screen of the vehicle instead of the phone. 🤔🧐

Do you need to run the app each time you start the car or is connectivity automatic?
