  • Ed and Al finally return to their old teacher Izumi, where we get a look into the past of their alchemy training and how they got to know her! This episode revealed a lot about the nature of alchemy and Ed and Al's understanding of the world, as well as told us about the dark and tragic truth of why Izumi is sick and how she can transmute without a circle. With so much being explained, we can't WAIT to see what happens next!

Alchemy is an extreme science. If everyone wanted to use it, everyone would need to know chemistry, physics and various types of engineering. Nobody can just magically do it. On top of this, almost everyone who can needs a transmutation circle, which varies depending on what it is they're actually trying to do. So if they wanted to use alchemy to stop the flood, someone would have to understand those sciences AND know what transmutation circle to draw, which wouldn't be easy because there wasn't anywhere to actually draw it with all that water.

It even contradicts itself. Spoiler for Scar's backstory
How is scar educated enough to use his alchemy, but not enough to make heads or tails of his brothers notes? His brothers notes should be the only resource he has to learn how his tattoos work

    A bit of lore:
There's a concept mentioned a couple times but never explored as much in the show as in the manga and that's a rebound. Basically if you attempt a transmutation where your input and output are not equal the transmutation will rebound on you and take what is needed to balance the equation. This is why human transmutation is such a HUGE taboo, because no one has been able to balance that equation and most who attempt it die from the rebound.

I think the main reason more people don't use alchemy is that it is usually the kind of thing someone learns how to do through some form of advanced education, or through family connections or a private teacher, while the place Ed and Al grew up is kind of a nowhere town, so alchemy isn't something just anybody could perform or would even know that much about. If anything, it's kind of strange that someone who seemingly knew a lot about alchemy like their father lived out in the middle of nowhere like that.

The distrust of alchemists in general because of the Ishvalan war is an interesting point. The main thing, though is that alchemy is a highly advanced science (like in this world, they don't see it as magic at all). A lot of people forget that because our very young protagonists are very skilled at alcehmy. But the fact is they're *prodigies.* So yeah not everyone can perform alchemy let alone do really advanced alchemy.
Another thing for that flooding situation probably, regular alchemists usually use some sort of chalk to construct the transmutation circle (or just into the dirt), which would be washed away by the flood or rain before the circle could be finished

  • @Kaempfdog
    @Kaempfdog 2 года назад +16

This episode is ROUGH. So I’ll explain a few details as usual.
There’s the scene with Izumi making a dam for them. I’ll say that alchemists while incredibly well respected, also are a bit rarer than you might think. And they often stay in the city where there’s more work but also where they are more likely to get noticed and get the quick promotion to state alchemist if they prove themselves. Dr. Marcoh’s town also had little to no understanding of alchemy even though he used it to treat them. Same in Father Cornello’s town with his miracles. Hohenheim was the single alchemist of their home town, and it’s not like he went public with his research either. So that’s why Izumi blew them all away that she could do that. (Especially since she has the clap transmutation which even LESS people would understand since that baffles other alchemists.)
I won’t go into One is All and All is One. You got it right on the money. Can’t be an alchemist if you don’t understand your place. It’s not magic that puts you above everyone. It’s science. INCREDIBLY advanced science but science nonetheless.
Izumi’s taboo…while it’s true that Ed and Al didn’t get ill, what happened to them was in complete standing against their intention. Ed didn’t believe he could stand without his mother, so he was rendered unable to stand from leg loss. He IMMEDIATELY gave up his power he just earned to get Al back in the armor. (Until the auto mail arm was made, his clapping alchemy was cut off from him.)
Al wanted to see his mother smile again, feel her warmth. Now he can’t feel.
Izumi wanted her child to come back…but she ignored that she could have attempted to conceive again when she was ready. And instead got her reproductive organs torn out creating a HUGE problem with her blood flow in her body.
The Truth is cruel…but sadly when you look at the substance…it is technically fair. You desired to change the world beyond the rules the universe holds…and you got your wish. But the world physically can’t will what does not exist into the world. And you pay the price of losing your intention in the worst way possible.
And even despite all these terrible situations they threw themselves into…they all still do have what they want. Izumi has taken the role of their mother and they both gained what they thought they had lost. Whether they truly recognize it is harder to tell. As if the world balanced their losses.
Always hold on hope for the future. No matter what terrible thing happens. So long as you have one, you have the will to move forward. You can always find what you’re looking for if you know how to look. Just make sure you analyze yourself to find what you’re looking for. That’s the true key to all of it.

There’s a conversation that points out the irony, but you can notice it for yourself if you’re looking for it. And both Ed and Al talked about it during the earlier episodes. Their regrets with Rose, the setup of their decision to commit the taboo, and various other scenes. Certain comments are things they could only understand if they come back and read it. That’s the trick.

For a lot of people, the irony behind the cost/punishment usually hits around when Roy became a victim, in fact many people never truly put 2 and 2 together and understand it was Izumi's reproductive organs that are taken away(partially because it's never explicitly mentioned in the anime), that's kinda why I normally avoid mentioning the reasoning behind the specific "costs" imposed on those attempting human transmutation. The irony behind the "h" deaths are also usually mention near the end of the anime. Just sharing my perspective

I know where people tend to pick up on it. And I suspect Montana and Kenny are no different. I do this VERY carefully. I think I’ve had…3 reactors that have actually noticed my foreshadowing. But not until the show answers the question for them specifically and they realize how I pulled a fast one. These shows are so detailed and throw so much information at you so fast. I have a very specific system in place of how I mix theorizing, explaining, and foreshadowing.
My comments are as much for the active fans that have seen it all as they are the blind viewer. I got over a year of this under my belt. FMA and MHA I DEFINITELY have the most experience with.
I will say this, me pointing out what happened to Ed and Al didn’t imply what happens to Izumi and knowing what happens to them won’t imply what happens to Mustang and Hohenheim. But when it DOES happen to them, they’ll be able to understand what happened not what will. And I do have a plan for how I’m going to talk about the Homunculus’ deaths. All of the general planning is done in advance.

That bit about "One is All and All is One" is important because _that's_ why human transmutation is taboo. You can't even consider trying it if you understand your place in the world. it's a complete rejection of that concept - and Truth is waiting to correct people on that.

  • @izukukageyama7552

Just so you know, for human transmutation the ingredients to make the body are the payment for the body, it just isn't possible so it fails. The arm was payment for the knowledge, he leaves with knowledge of the Truth and then uses that knowledge to sacrifice his leg to bind his brother's soul to the armor. The question of what Alphonse's entire body paid for is a pertinent one though...

The oldest surviving alchemical text in the western world is a single sheet known as the Chrysopeia of Cleopatra (which is by an Alexandrian alchemist named Cleopatra, not any of the queens of that name.) It contains a sketch of the Uroboros that is used in this show as a tattoo on the deadly sins, and around that is written a phrase that can be translated to "all is one, one is all."
The symbol on Izumi's chest, which is also on Al and on Ed's jacket, is known as the Cross of Flamel and appears in alchemical works falsely attributed to the medieval monk Nicolas Flamel. It is a stylized serpent wrapped around a cross, and represents the coming together of opposites, healing, eternity, and arcane knowledge.

The reason people don't call alchemist is cause they're fairly rare... in the show we see a lot (relatively speaking) cause Ed is in the military and the military recruits alchemist from all over the country, but their home town is considered a small town so there being no alchemist during that flood is normal.

9:33 the reason why people are doing manuel labor instead of alchemy is because alchemy is incredibly complex and only the smartest can use it’s power. To transmute your have to know by heart the physical makeup and compounds of whatever you’re transmuting to the last atom and then rearrange the atoms positions in order to create no structures. It’s not because being an alchemist is looked down upon, it’s simply because it’s way too hard for people to do

There are few alchemists in the population, much less notable and skilled in general alchemy. Also the vast majority need to either use symbols they carry for specific alchemy they are skilled at or draw symbols for case by case. Think of all the characters who use it and don't then compare that to military or special circumstances in their background. They even offered materials and drawing equipment to ed when he took the test. So you have to be born lucky and work your butt off for alchemy proficiency.

Out in the countryside it's rare to have any alchemists available to help. Their hometown is on the outskirts right by Ishval and have no alchemists mentioned. It would cost a lot of money and time for them to call one. That's what I think anyway considering the alchemists are mostly kept in central or in the military
In the original FMA anime they include the coal town where someone says 'I gave a crack at alchemy but had no talent for it' or along those lines which makes me believe it must be true more countryside towns don't have alchemists
