FINALLY!!!! Someone posted this most amazing performance of this song. I have this on vinyl but haven't put in the time to digitize it. I love Chuck's story of the song talking about how he wrote this for Gadd's recital back at Eastman School of Music. Apparently Steve hadn't played it in so long that he has to use the music for this performance. Cool! Thanks for posting this, man!!!

An amazing performance by Steve Gadd on drums, along with a great band headed by Chuck Mangione. Those two went to music school together (Eastman School Of Music), and Mangione wrote this piece for Gadd's recital in 1968. For a graded recital in music school, the piece a drummer plays has to include changes in tempo and rhythmic structure, and Mangione certainly provided them here, played with Gadd's usual virtuoso flair. In the full track from the album, there's an introduction by Mangione describing how the piece came to be written. Mangione included this song on a studio album, in a shorter version, but this one is just jaw-dropping. The album is called Tarantella, recorded live at a benefit concert for victims of an earthquake in Italy that year, and other guest performers include Chick Corea and Dizzy Gillespie. I bought the album on vinyl when it came out, in 1981, but I don't think it was ever re-released on CD, which is a real shame, because it's a fantastic live album.

In case you'd like the whole album that this recording came from you can look for the album that featured Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Gadd, and Chick Corea as guest artists. Also appearing were Kathryn Moses, Gap Mangione, and Sal Nistico.
That album was recorded at some hotel ballroom in ?Syracuse? New York in 1981 as a relief fundraiser for victims of an earthquake that happened earlier that year in Italy.

The album is called Tarantella. It was recorded at a live concert to benefit earthquake victims in Italy, album released around 1981. The album does not list Tony Levin on bass; it says Jeff d'Angelo and Charles Meeks. This is a truly great live album, with several great guest stars, including not only Steve Gadd, but also Chick Corea and Dizzy Gillespie. I don't believe it was ever re-released on CD, which is a shame. I digitized my copy of the vinyl many years ago.
