i know this theory is really old but.. an alicorn is _all_ of the races, not just a horn and some wings. they get earth pony magic too if they didn't have it already
my headcannon is that earth ponies do have a physical difference from the other two races, its just not as visible because its their back legs. in my headcannon earth ponies back legs have stronger bones, skin and muscle to support their increased physical strength. I imagine its harder for pegasi and unicorns to buck/kick trees like earth ponies because they don't have that added strength. in short, when a unicorn or pegasus becomes an alicorn, not only do they get wings/a horn, their back legs change too.
You're forgetting an important piece of evidence from the first episode. During the provolone, it is said that Celestia and Luna were "unicorn sisters". While you might be able to chalk that up to the fact that the term "Alicorn" was created by the fandom and didn't exist during the first episode, merchandise released afterwards still refers to them as unicorns when repeating the prologue(ie the phone app)
Well... I wouldn't put much stock into merchandise info (no pun intended), but I did go back to re-watch the prologue. It said that the two sisters "used their unicorn magic", which is something alicorns would have. The only other statement that may suggest they were born as unicorns was when Luna was referred to as "the younger unicorn", but that only provides evidence of Luna being born as a unicorn and we've seen before with the Cake Twins that siblings can be of different races. The only other argument I have is... the book Twilight Sparkle was reading wasn't all that accurate. I mean, if the Season 4 premiere is to be believed, the book got Celestia's hair colour wrong. :p
I agree with the brony notion (go check him out) in that the Alicorns are a race, but their children are born as the other races at random, getting their wings, horn or both at the same time as their cutie marks or a bit earlier.

I think you're forgetting one crucial fact. you can't know about something that happened when you were a baby. Of course Celestia and Luna would have no idea how an alicorn baby is because there hasn't been one since their own births. and they're definitely not going to remember their toddler years
But yet, wouldn't their parents have told about their births? Like, c'mon, my parents bring up at least ten times a year how I caused my mother to puke up her pizza on a family reunion, and made everyone scramble out of the house at midnight to go to the hospital.

Then, it wouldn't come up. Even if they had been born in Equestria to normal ponies, it may not have come up. At a certain point, they probably stopped seeing the sisters as Alicorns and would most likely spend their time with the sisters as natural foals. It happens. Like adaption and such. People get so used to seeing the kid around they don't tell them they adopted them.

My bet is that neither Luna or Celestia were ever anything beside alicorns... however, they had never been born either! Someone (like Starswirl) or something (like the Tree of Harmony) could have created them this way, alicorns yet not *born* alicorns. It would explain their immortality, which is something that has zero explanation thus far in the show...
BlueTeller In the Two Sisters Journal, Celestia and Luna were tracked down by the six founders (the six in the first Hearths Warming episode), to have the two of them lead since they were basically a mix of the three tribes. The two of them were apparently close to or fully adults without cutie marks when that happens. The event that lead to the two of them getting their marks, was an exhausted (and suddenly grey haired) Starswirl explaining that the unicorns fucked up raising the sun that morning, and so the two of them found their marks while rectifying the situation. The wiki that I read that from didn't say anything about their births or parents, but the book is supposed to be their journal from the beginnings of Equestria. It makes sense for them to NOT recap their own life from kindergarten age all the way to them starting the journal. The journal is supposed to be for themselves after all. Also, it kinda helps the writing team avoid early life details for the two of them, since the chance is too great that they'll fuck it up somehow, and the past of the sisters becomes the new midichlorians(sp?) of the overall nerd culture. Also, it maintains SOME mystery around the two sisters. Cadence starting as a Pegasus, is probably there to set a precedence for ascension to alicorn, explain why Cadence was nowhere to be found with early Equestria conflict, why Cadence was a teenager when Twilight Sparkle was a filly, and to say "Cadence and Shining Armor are about the same age. Cadence isn't cradle robbing with a vengeance, and Shining isn't married to someone that's significantly older than his grandparents".
Shame that it isn't exactly a canon anymore, despite that it was written by one of show designers (also it is quite old). Proves? In Tirek episode Celestia say that Tirek doesn't know about forth alicorn princess. But how he know about third one? Tirek was imprisoned thousand year ago so it mean that Cadence was there (also her real name is Mi Amora Cadenza.. so she is princes Amore). In fact possible explanation of her young age is simple.. she was still young back then (as she is clearly based on G3 Rarity) and turned in stone by Sombra (who was a legal ruler so stepfather?), but her seal break when all other start collapse what lead to most events in the show (worth to point out that all those seals were put by elements but start collapse due the seeds of chaos, so it suggest that Sombra also did use that power.. whet isn't so weird if you look on "alicorn powers" when Twilight made time sight potion..). After that Cadence was put in they distant family for safe-keep. I also add that interpretation form this book contradict several solid theories, so it is new midichlorians.. sort off. Most legends in the show are deliberately unreliable and it is sort of a legend. Comics on the other hand may exist somewhere in the MLP multiverse.
I think Celestia was born a unicorn, if not an alicorn. Just think about it, she seems to know all of these spells and seems to have supreme knowledge of magic. I mean sure she has been an alicorn princess for more than a thousand years, but so has Luna. Luna doesn't show that same knowledge as Celestia. And alicorns are a combination of earth pony, unicorn, and pegasi so Celestia is probably a part of an earth pony that has visions, not born an earth pony. Luna on the other hoof I think was born an earth pony. She always seems to be interested in what ponies are doing in smaller towns like Ponyville which were created by earth pony settlers. Why, because she was an earth pony, and she wants to help her own kind and remember what it was like before she had all of her responsibilties as princess of Equestria. Just a theory, but I think it might be possible.

I mean, sure Luna could not be as interested, but Equestria was in a weak state after the attack of Discord, and faced other dangers, as well as Equestria was forming new towns all the time. (Proven by how Granny smith was alive when Ponyville was made.) So Celestia would be really busy, especially if she was running her magic school then.
Another thing that supports Luna being an earth pony is the fact that she has a marking around her cutie mark, from what we have seen only earth ponies have markings/birth marks on their bodies. For example Pip and Trouble shoes (around his mouth and nose). I know this is a weak idea but i have literally not seen any unicorns and pegasi with them.
You can be an alicorn without being a princess. being an alicorn means you have extremely powerful magic. not every alicorn has to be a prinsses. there is a video somewhere or part of an episode or equestrian girls idk where sunset shimmer basic ly becomes an alicorn because she had a horn but she also had phoenix wings. a lot of people were saying she was a princess because she was an alicorn. but she still wasnt, she was just an alicorn. but a human alicorn witch don't make sense because when rarity an twilight ponied up they didn't have horns. wait, does this shape look like sunset to you? ^ (gasp) it looks like a unicorn horn and it's a triangle. do you know what that means?

I think lauren's words needs to be mentioned here. Keep in mind the crystalling was made years after she said that so that might have been forgotten or changed over time along with the fact that lauren wasn't the one who wrote the that episode. so the point is anyone can change the facts based on how they can make the story work. if the princesses were born alicorns then they would know how to handle flurry heart and that means the crystal heart wouldn't have been shattered, the barrier between the cold snow and the crystal empire wouldn't have been broken and they wouldn't have needed sunburst because the crystal heart never needed fixing, somewhere in the story at least 2 things could've happened, 1 lauren changed her mind to fit the story or 2 the writer for that episode forgot about that informatin.

Makes sense, even now with the new episode with Starswirl He was a magic teacher, specialized to training princesses/alicorns, and there's also the episode with Celestia's birthday, where the kids say, narrating the story, that there were six advanced unicorns to raise the sun before they found out celestia could do it, and that's how she got her cutie mark (don't know about Luna tho) and connect that with this theory and you'll get a very accurate story i guess

Whatever she says doesn't mean it's true because the people who are in charge of production can change anything they want to when they want to do so. With her no longer helping to write, and Hasbro carefully watching and correcting whatever is created, things can change ^^' after all, Lauren also stated that Luna and Celestia were to be the only princesses. And lo and behold we get Twilight, Cadence, and now Flurry Heart. So yeah, unfortunately her word doesn't really matter anymore because Hasbro is a toy business and will make decisions geared towards the toy business.
in my headcanon celestia and luna were born alicorns. but, if they WEREN'T born alicorns, i believe celestia would be born a unicorn and luna would be born as a pegasus.
I actually like this, altough the journal of the Two Sisters as main evidence is still questionable since it states that the Tree of Harmony is already there before StarSwirl went to limb and we know from Shadow Play that's not the case, it's still useful but it can't be the only evidence.

It said when they were really really young they would use there magic to make crowns out of gems and then fly up to a mountain and play princess with animals as there subjects! So yeh I'm 99.99 present sure that they were born alicorns.

Though if you ask my about my overly complex crazy nerd theories.. they are in fact from future and it is least insane part of this theory. - Celestia is no one else then future Starlight Glimmer (G1 Star Gleamer ) as both were based on G1 Twilight and they even joke about that in the show.. twice (Celestia on "Italian Majesty" variant owned by Lauren). Plus both have Asperger. Possible names she also could use are also Mistmane (G1 Princess Misty), Star Cather (who is proto-alicorn) and Sky Wishes (G1 princess Skylark). Plus.. did no one notice that Starlight has exact same colors and heir as Flurry Heart? My guess is that she was turn into unicorn and send to the past, so she would learn friendship lesson before she turn in Daybreaker. - Luna is no one else then Trixie (G2 Princess Trixiebelle), her design name was also Serena (G1 Princess Serena). She was based on G1 Ember, who was earth pony sister of G1 Twilight, what they clearly retcon though she could be Mage Meadowbrook and hide fact that she is unicorn for some reason. - Cadence is no one else then Chrysalis (yup.. they even have similar accent). Mean 6 episode drop also huge clue that she could be Sombra (specifically his golem) wife as Empress (of curved horn unicorns.. who aren't obvious changelings) Sable Spirit. Though he still technically is a head of Royal Family as he adopt other princess into it (as alicorns don't get titles from nowhere). And well.. her parents act weirdly when Minotaur mention her being born "under the tree". More find.. - Starswirl the Bearded who is not a part of royal family despite being adopted brother of Starlight as Sunburst (seriously they parents clearly were together in the past). Not only botch are bearded wizards obsessed over books but with mediocre magical power, but Sunburst is only pony about who Starswirld show any care (usually he don't even referee to them by names). Still his name is based on G1 Princess Starburst, G1 Princess Sunbeam, and Princess Silver Swirl (seriously, no one did noticed that they names clearly reference G1/G2 Princess Ponies?). Plus there is enough proves to find out that Starswirl is not only Sunburst but also Discord when he try (based on G1 Mr. Moohick) including fact that Starswirl befriended originally Scorpan (who is prince of north in G1), but ponies get Scorpan pendent (what "coincidentally is also key to elements") from Moohick in G1 and in G4 Discord. Anyway comic mention Starswir being jealous of alicorns, and speal from Magical Mystery Cure was clearly designed to forcibly align someone with the elements.. but in his case it fail as he didn't have a friends, what is also the reason why she didn't become evil despite being as Starswirl affected by darkness, what affect emotions though. For same reason only main 6 can use elements now as tree is possessed by Lord of Midnight Empire (who was also Spike original boss). In end there is in fact 5-7 alicorns depending on counting (plus Sunset).
The only thing that goes against this theory is that their teacher was Starswirl. It could be possible that they were born into the royal status, were taught magic by Starswirl, were given a test, passed it, and became alicorns. Since Starswirl mostly knew about magic and friendship, it's possible he thought Celestia and Luna magic and friendship. I don't have the Journal of the two sisters, so this is mainly from the show.
Here's my theory. The Alicorn tribe mentioned in the journal (located in Canterlot, being the origin place of the ROYAL CANTERLOT VOICE) didn't have children to make more Alicorns, what they did do was select worthy foals from other tribes and trained them to become Alicorns. This explains Celestia and Luna not being born Alicorns (you could argue this but every argument I've seen has been really flimsy and doesn't make sense in the context.) but still having an Alicorn tribe and have them become Alicorns before getting their cutie marks, AND them not knowing Alicorns could be born.
If Celestia an Luna weren't born to Alicorn parents, it would explain why they aren't still around. I believe that Celestia and Luna were born of two powerful unicorns who used all of their magic to turn them into Alicorns in order to end the period of anarchy and bitterness that equestrian was in. It's also possible that Those two forementioned unicorns discovered the means of which to turn one into an alicorn, like the magic Celestia used on Twilight. From birth, after being turned into alicorns, the parents probably took the foals around with them, but since alicorn aging is different than normal, the parents probably died while they were toddlers, before they could remember anything.
Which would also bring up a suspicious question: how would the sun and the moon had been raised and lowered before they were able to control them? Would that mean that there were other alicorns before them that did? Or unicorns?
Lauren Faust no longer works for the show so what she says is no longer canon. Besides, if it's in the show then it doesn't matter what any of the producers or writers say.
But it is said IN THE SHOW. Lauren Faust had an image and idea for the show when she created it, but she left it open to change when she left. It no longer matters what she said because it is no longer canon. She is no longer involved with what the writers and producers say and do.
Lauren Faust no longer works with MLP, she left when season 2 ended or began, somewhere in season 2. In season six premiere, Lauren Faust was gone and I guess Hasbro decided to change what Lauren said. Celestia and Lina are based on two sisters from Rescue from Midnight Castle. If so that Luna born as Earth pony despite being Unicornian royalty would explain her jealousy toward sister and why they left in young age. I presume that is reason why they considered Cadence as Pegazi to fit the pattern.. except she was based on G3 Rarity who was unicorn and I doubt it is canon especially as she is Celesta and Luna niece. Celesia could also relate to G3 Star Coather who was pegazi.. though it was before reintroduction of unicorns so considering her unusual design she could be as well a alicorn.

Well, actually according to da book, when the two were fillies, they FLEW to find all the gems in the mountains to make crowns, so they must've been pegasi at least for them to do so. Also, they would've had to have said something about becoming alicorns in the book, besides, even if they DID start out as earth ponies, someone would've had to turn them into Alicorns. No, star swirled the bearded couldn't have done so, because A. He may not have enough magic, and B. Celestia and Luna didn't meet him until they became rulers

Possibly, Celestia and Luna are not truly the same type of pony as the Equestrians. We've seen ponies like the Maretonians, and they seem to be a different species or subspecies from the ponies we have been shown in Equestria. What if Celestia and Luna are from a similar type of pony to the Equestrians, yet they are all or mostly alicorns, or at least more prone to giving birth to them? It would make sense, as the only ponies we've seen become alicorns are Twilight and Cadence, Cadence being depicted in the book "Twilight and the Crystal Heart Spell" as being found in the woods as a pegasus by earth ponies, and it is possible she was not left there by Equestrians, but rather by a civilization of alicorns, and she was thrown out due to her birth as a pegasus. Hence, it was much easier for her to become an alicorn than it was for Twilight, who had to be put through magical tests and bear the elements of harmony. Actually, the fact that Cadence, who was possibly from this alicorn civilization, was the mother of Flurryheart lends more evidence to this theory, and could explain her birth as an alicorn rather than a normal pony.

If they were BORN Alicorns, they'd have to be BORN Princesses (like Princess Flury Heart). Twilight Sparkle BECAME a Princess when she BECAME an Alicorn (Grant it, they had to do the coronation, but that's just a formality to inform the kingdom). So if they became Princesses (like Cadence and Twilight). And they couldn't get their Cutie Mark until AFTER becoming Princesses (because they didn't have that kind of power). Then they had to BECOME Alicorns in order to find their calling.
quite a few of you do forget the fact that even if celestial and Luna were born alicorns they weren't born crystal ponies, meaning a crystaling would not be part of their culture. Also the aging difference between celestia and v.s twilight and cadence which is made quite clear. throughout the past seasons cadence aging has been shown as well as twilights, but celestia seem to remain immortal

Plot twist: they were born unicorns during the times of racism but originally didn’t care about the separation until their friend(who was in love with an earth pony) got them really thinking about the situation and together the three basically began a movement to unite the three tribes and after equestria was created, Celestia and Luna became alicorns and then the new rulers while their friend got with their lover and was the first pony to give birth to kids of a different race.

Maybe they have visions as an earth ponies ability because alicorns have all three types of magic (including earth ponies too?) ? If so, they could start off as any type of ponies and gain this ability when they became alicorns.
If Celestia was a Earth Pony, and Luna a pegasus, then the purple, blue, and white crystals in G5 could represent Twilight, Luna, and Celestia. Unicorn, Pegasus, Earth pony.
allicorns need the magic of earth ponies, pegasai, and unicorns to become an allicorn. Its not weird that luna and celestia have the abilies of the three tribes.
Based on Twilight's appearance in the last problem, i think it's safe to say the Sisters used to be unicorns since Cadance didn't have the same magically flowing hair that they do. Cozy Glow's didn't start magically flowing either when she became an Alicorn, but i initially assumed it was just because she didn't legitimately ascend like the princesses did, but the more I think about it....
I think it's more of an age thing rather than an types of ponies thing. Since Celestia and Luna are extremely old alicorns and Cadence and Twilight were younger, I think it's safe to say that the older an alicorn becomes, the more their appearance becomes.. More magical?
I know that this video was uploaded a while ago, but I have to comment now. I don’t think that Celestia and Luna were born earth pony’s. I think that they were born unicorns. Because their mentor was star swirl the bearded who is a unicorn. Celestia and Luna were born before unicorns, pesai and earth pony’s were friends. So if they were born earth pony’s Celestia and Luna would not have been star swirls students. I don’t know if this makes sense but it’s what I think.
Probably yes. In a season 8 episode about Celestia's 1111th year of raising the sun for the first time, they said before Celestia Star Swirl and 5 other unicorns raised the sun and moon, but then one day they found out a student named Celestia has the talent to do it herself. I assume then Celestia was still a unicorn, in fact Star Swirl's student. We can't know exactly how old she could have been back then, but if she was still a filly when she got her wings, it would make a lot of sense.

All of your questions is obvious if you think about it. I read the book where that quote came from. Time and time again it is applied that they where earth ponies. When my friends saw the episode, they flipped out, but when I saw it my only reaction to them not being born allicorns was " how did my friends not know this before hand? They read the book too."
i was thinking that they didnt get their cutie marks because, seriously, who would ever come to think that just one pony could rise the sun or moon when it had been done by dozens before. im pretty sure that it just took a loooooong time to figure out that they could do what was impossible at the time. when celestia said "the birth of an alicorn is something equestria has never seen" could mean that celestia and luna were not born in equestria, and when she said that, it seemed as if she was surprised because she did not think that a fake, spell-created alicorn could give birth to another alicorn

So following that logic Celestia and Luna must be considered most talentless ponies in whole Equestria as their "talents" dictated by celestial powers, not personal achievements. But if they were born as Alicorns, and you forget to mention their eternal dieties status, they had to overcome their problems like everyone else in their surroundings.
Friendship Is Magic Season 7, Episode 1 has established that Unicorns can also have that ability to have visions in dreams. Celestia and Luna being referred to as unicorns prior to the adoption of the term alicorn also help to disprove the idea that the two sisters were anything other then unicorns. Regarding the comics, there are so many inconsistencies in the comics do to bad writing that the comics really can't be used as a valid point of reference.
I believe that the *Book* that you mentioned is *Canon* I don’t know how to prove it.. But I know it’s canon! Because it says on the internet that Cadence was born a unicorn! (Just search it up!) I believe that Both princess Luna & Celestia were born as *Unicorns* Yes, they *did* mention that Flurry hearts birth (a birth of an Alicorn) has never happened before in Season 6 Episode 1: The crystalling Part 1.. *BUT* Somepony mentioned that you have to do something that proves you are ready to become a princess/alicorn.. So maybe the thing that Celestia did was raise the sun for her mother (Galaxia)! I only think.. And Luna raised the moon for her father (Cosmos)! I think.. But this is possible.. Why you ask? Because.. Who other pony have you seen that has raised/lower the sun and the moon! (Other than Twilight in season 4) It’s honestly almost impossible to raise the sun & the moon as a Pegasus.. Two points: 1. Their backstory says they CAME TO Equestria...meaning they were not born there. 2. If they were born alicorns that would make them seem more alien to their subjects which would drive a HUGE wedge between them and the common pony.
Well, alicorns are supposed to include Earth Pony magic, so even if they were not born earth ponies, they might have such senses. Celestia can teleport, and perform great feats of unicorn magic. So it is just as likely as the other races.
I have a fact to add to this theory. According to the books and shows,twilight was a unicorn and cadence was a pegasus. So I'm pretty sure that each alicorn has to be from a diffrent pony tribe, however since celestia and luna have the same blood they count as one princess. BTW this theory is unlikely the truth as it has only a tiny amount of evidence
I don't find the books to be cannon, and that in the season premiere, what was said was a continuity error. Or celestia, and luna were born alicorns but they were raised by normal pony's, like cadence.

"Flurry Heart" ≈ "F.H." ≈ "Face Hugger" is an inside joke) In My Little Pony: Equestria Girls' "Forgotten Friendship", Celestia mentioned EVERY DECISION Sunset Shimmer made, it proves that Sunset Shimmer has a "KIND HEART", no BUTs or IFs. A big departure from "CRUEL AND DISHONEST", but might be true if Sunset took a drastic measure to save the Crystal Empire. She might have to do forceful things and lie to save it. Some might say, "Oh, Celestia said the situation had changed. Oh, Celestia said Sunset is no longer that pony." Remember, Celestia said the situation line with Twilight Sparkle in the group. Celestia never said only the two of them (Celestia and Sunset). Want to include Twilight Sparkle in it? Because Sunset Shimmer is Twilight Sparkle's real mother, and Twilight was present when the Crystal Empire / Crystal Equestria was at its glory. Also in a much more distant past. Celestia got jealous over her older sister, the 'ancient Twilight' (aka Twilight Sparkle's ancient reincarnation). Celestia perceived their mother (the ancient reincarnation of Sunset Shimmer) to love Twilight more than Celestia (hinted with Celestia faking her angry 'Am I not a Great Teacher?' face). So Celestia turned into Day Breaker and attacked ancient Twilight, similar to the much later on when Luna turned into Nightmare Moon and attacked Celestia. A carving of 'Ancient Twilight' can be seen in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic's "Stranger than Fan Fiction". It makes sence. But some people say they would have needed to do something to deserve being an alicorn thus meaning they would have to be a unicorn. which is not completely true. Other ponies can do special things to. Also some say they would also need their cutie mark first. But not everything that is special is worth a cutie mark.

an alicorn is _all_ of the races, not just a horn and some wings. they get earth pony magic too if they didn't have it already
my headcannon is that earth ponies do have a physical difference from the other two races, its just not as visible because its their back legs. in my headcannon earth ponies back legs have stronger bones, skin and muscle to support their increased physical strength. I imagine its harder for pegasi and unicorns to buck/kick trees like earth ponies because they don't have that added strength. in short, when a unicorn or pegasus becomes an alicorn, not only do they get wings/a horn, their back legs change too.

You're forgetting an important piece of evidence from the first episode. During the provolone, it is said that Celestia and Luna were "unicorn sisters". While you might be able to chalk that up to the fact that the term "Alicorn" was created by the fandom and didn't exist during the first episode, merchandise released afterwards still refers to them as unicorns when repeating the prologue(ie the phone app)
Well... I wouldn't put much stock into merchandise info (no pun intended), but I did go back to re-watch the prologue. It said that the two sisters "used their unicorn magic", which is something alicorns would have. The only other statement that may suggest they were born as unicorns was when Luna was referred to as "the younger unicorn", but that only provides evidence of Luna being born as a unicorn and we've seen before with the Cake Twins that siblings can be of different races. The only other argument I have is... the book Twilight Sparkle was reading wasn't all that accurate. I mean, if the Season 4 premiere is to be believed, the book got Celestia's hair colour wrong. :p
I agree with the brony notion (go check him out) in that the Alicorns are a race, but their children are born as the other races at random, getting their wings, horn or both at the same time as their cutie marks or a bit earlier.

My bet is that neither Luna or Celestia were ever anything beside alicorns... however, they had never been born either! Someone (like Starswirl) or something (like the Tree of Harmony) could have created them this way, alicorns yet not *born* alicorns. It would explain their immortality, which is something that has zero explanation thus far in the show...

BlueTeller In the Two Sisters Journal, Celestia and Luna were tracked down by the six founders (the six in the first Hearths Warming episode), to have the two of them lead since they were basically a mix of the three tribes. The two of them were apparently close to or fully adults without cutie marks when that happens.
The event that lead to the two of them getting their marks, was an exhausted (and suddenly grey haired) Starswirl explaining that the unicorns fucked up raising the sun that morning, and so the two of them found their marks while rectifying the situation.
The wiki that I read that from didn't say anything about their births or parents, but the book is supposed to be their journal from the beginnings of Equestria. It makes sense for them to NOT recap their own life from kindergarten age all the way to them starting the journal. The journal is supposed to be for themselves after all.
Also, it kinda helps the writing team avoid early life details for the two of them, since the chance is too great that they'll fuck it up somehow, and the past of the sisters becomes the new midichlorians(sp?) of the overall nerd culture.
Also, it maintains SOME mystery around the two sisters.
Cadence starting as a Pegasus, is probably there to set a precedence for ascension to alicorn, explain why Cadence was nowhere to be found with early Equestria conflict, why Cadence was a teenager when Twilight Sparkle was a filly, and to say "Cadence and Shining Armor are about the same age. Cadence isn't cradle robbing with a vengeance, and Shining isn't married to someone that's significantly older than his grandparents".
Shame that it isn't exactly a canon anymore, despite that it was written by one of show designers (also it is quite old). Proves? In Tirek episode Celestia say that Tirek doesn't know about forth alicorn princess. But how he know about third one? Tirek was imprisoned thousand year ago so it mean that Cadence was there (also her real name is Mi Amora Cadenza.. so she is princes Amore). In fact possible explanation of her young age is simple.. she was still young back then (as she is clearly based on G3 Rarity) and turned in stone by Sombra (who was a legal ruler so stepfather?), but her seal break when all other start collapse what lead to most events in the show (worth to point out that all those seals were put by elements but start collapse due the seeds of chaos, so it suggest that Sombra also did use that power.. whet isn't so weird if you look on "alicorn powers" when Twilight made time sight potion..). After that Cadence was put in they distant family for safe-keep.
I also add that interpretation form this book contradict several solid theories, so it is new midichlorians.. sort off. Most legends in the show are deliberately unreliable and it is sort of a legend. Comics on the other hand may exist somewhere in the MLP multiverse.

I think Celestia was born a unicorn, if not an alicorn. Just think about it, she seems to know all of these spells and seems to have supreme knowledge of magic. I mean sure she has been an alicorn princess for more than a thousand years, but so has Luna. Luna doesn't show that same knowledge as Celestia. And alicorns are a combination of earth pony, unicorn, and pegasi so Celestia is probably a part of an earth pony that has visions, not born an earth pony. Luna on the other hoof I think was born an earth pony. She always seems to be interested in what ponies are doing in smaller towns like Ponyville which were created by earth pony settlers. Why, because she was an earth pony, and she wants to help her own kind and remember what it was like before she had all of her responsibilties as princess of Equestria. Just a theory, but I think it might be possible.

Another thing that supports Luna being an earth pony is the fact that she has a marking around her cutie mark, from what we have seen only earth ponies have markings/birth marks on their bodies. For example Pip and Trouble shoes (around his mouth and nose). I know this is a weak idea but i have literally not seen any unicorns and pegasi with them.

I think lauren's words needs to be mentioned here. Keep in mind the crystalling was made years after she said that so that might have been forgotten or changed over time along with the fact that lauren wasn't the one who wrote the that episode. so the point is anyone can change the facts based on how they can make the story work. if the princesses were born alicorns then they would know how to handle flurry heart and that means the crystal heart wouldn't have been shattered, the barrier between the cold snow and the crystal empire wouldn't have been broken and they wouldn't have needed sunburst because the crystal heart never needed fixing, somewhere in the story at least 2 things could've happened, 1 lauren changed her mind to fit the story or 2 the writer for that episode forgot about that informatin.

Whatever she says doesn't mean it's true because the people who are in charge of production can change anything they want to when they want to do so. With her no longer helping to write, and Hasbro carefully watching and correcting whatever is created, things can change ^^' after all, Lauren also stated that Luna and Celestia were to be the only princesses. And lo and behold we get Twilight, Cadence, and now Flurry Heart. So yeah, unfortunately her word doesn't really matter anymore because Hasbro is a toy business and will make decisions geared towards the toy business.

Celestia and Luna were born alicorns! In the 2 sisters book. It said when they were really really young they would use there magic to make crowns out of gems and then fly up to a mountain and play princess with animals as there subjects! And they said that it is beyond there understanding because maybe there mentors didn't tell them about alicorn because they were young and there mentor didn't wanna spoil there young minds. So yeh I'm 99.99 present sure that they were born alicorns.

Possible names she also could use are also Mistmane (G1 Princess Misty), Star Cather (who is proto-alicorn) and Sky Wishes (G1 princess Skylark). Plus.. did no one notice that Starlight has exact same colors and heir as Flurry Heart? My guess is that she was turn into unicorn and send to the past, so she would learn friendship lesson before she turn in Daybreaker.
- Luna is no one else then Trixie (G2 Princess Trixiebelle), her design name was also Serena (G1 Princess Serena). She was based on G1 Ember, who was earth pony sister of G1 Twilight, what they clearly retcon though she could be Mage Meadowbrook and hide fact that she is unicorn for some reason.
- Cadence is no one else then Chrysalis (yup.. they even have similar accent). Mean 6 episode drop also huge clue that she could be Sombra (specifically his golem) wife as Empress (of curved horn unicorns.. who aren't obvious changelings) Sable Spirit. And well.. her parents act weirdly when Minotaur mention her being born "under the tree". More find..
- Starswirl the Bearded who is not a part of royal family despite being adopted brother of Starlight as Sunburst (seriously they parents clearly were together in the past). Not only botch are bearded wizards obsessed over books but with mediocre magical power, but Sunburst is only pony about who Starswirld show any care (usually he don't even referee to them by names). Still his name is based on G1 Princess Starburst, G1 Princess Sunbeam, and Princess Silver Swirl (seriously, no one did noticed that they names clearly reference G1/G2 Princess Ponies?). Plus there is enough proves to find out that Starswirl is not only Sunburst but also Discord when he try (based on G1 Mr. Moohick) including fact that Starswirl befriended originally Scorpan (who is prince of north in G1), but ponies get Scorpan pendent (what "coincidentally is also key to elements") from Moohick in G1 and in G4 Discord. Anyway comic mention Starswir being jealous of alicorns, and speal from Magical Mystery Cure was clearly designed to forcibly align someone with the elements.. but in his case it fail as he didn't have a friends, what is also the reason why she didn't become evil despite being as Starswirl affected by darkness, what affect emotions though. For same reason only main 6 can use elements now as tree is possessed by Lord of Midnight Empire (who was also Spike original boss).
In end there is in fact 5-7 alicorns depending on counting (plus Sunset).
The only thing that goes against this theory is that their teacher was Starswirl. It could be possible that they were born into the royal status, were taught magic by Starswirl, were given a test, passed it, and became alicorns. Since Starswirl mostly knew about magic and friendship, it's possible he thought Celestia and Luna magic and friendship. I don't have the Journal of the two sisters, so this is mainly from the show.
Here's my theory.
The Alicorn tribe mentioned in the journal (located in Canterlot, being the origin place of the ROYAL CANTERLOT VOICE) didn't have children to make more Alicorns, what they did do was select worthy foals from other tribes and trained them to become Alicorns. This explains Celestia and Luna not being born Alicorns (you could argue this but every argument I've seen has been really flimsy and doesn't make sense in the context.) but still having an Alicorn tribe and have them become Alicorns before getting their cutie marks, AND them not knowing Alicorns could be born.
If Celestia an Luna weren't born to Alicorn parents, it would explain why they aren't still around. I believe that Celestia and Luna were born of two powerful unicorns who used all of their magic to turn them into Alicorns in order to end the period of anarchy and bitterness that equestrian was in. It's also possible that Those two forementioned unicorns discovered the means of which to turn one into an alicorn, like the magic Celestia used on Twilight. From birth, after being turned into alicorns, the parents probably took the foals around with them, but since alicorn aging is different than normal, the parents probably died while they were toddlers, before they could remember anything.
When I think of groups of unicorns raising the sun and moon, I can't stop thinking of unicorns pulling a muscle while doing it. XD

But it is said IN THE SHOW. Lauren Faust had an image and idea for the show when she created it, but she left it open to change when she left. It no longer matters what she said because it is no longer canon. She is no longer involved with what the writers and producers say and do.
Lauren Faust no longer works with MLP, she left when season 2 ended or began, somewhere in season 2. In season six premiere, Lauren Faust was gone and I guess Hasbro decided to change what Lauren said. Celestia and Lina are based on two sisters from Rescue from Midnight Castle. If so that Luna born as Earth pony despite being Unicornian royalty would explain her jealousy toward sister and why they left in young age. I presume that is reason why they considered Cadence as Pegazi to fit the pattern.. except she was based on G3 Rarity who was unicorn and I doubt it is canon especially as she is Celesta and Luna niece. Celesia could also relate to G3 Star Coather who was pegazi.. though it was before reintroduction of unicorns so considering her unusual design she could be as well a alicorn.
TheRezro Very good point and Valid argument. Celestia does indeed resemble Star Catcher however it was said Celestia was based of a G1 pony named 'Majestic' who was infact a unicorn. I still either stand by alicorn or earth pony.
Well, actually according to da book, when the two were fillies, they FLEW to find all the gems in the mountains to make crowns, so they must've been pegasi at least for them to do so. Also, they would've had to have said something about becoming alicorns in the book, besides, even if they DID start out as earth ponies, someone would've had to turn them into Alicorns. No, star swirled the bearded couldn't have done so, because A. He may not have enough magic, and B. Celestia and Luna didn't meet him until they became rulers

Possibly, Celestia and Luna are not truly the same type of pony as the Equestrians. We've seen ponies like the Maretonians, and they seem to be a different species or subspecies from the ponies we have been shown in Equestria. What if Celestia and Luna are from a similar type of pony to the Equestrians, yet they are all or mostly alicorns, or at least more prone to giving birth to them? It would make sense, as the only ponies we've seen become alicorns are Twilight and Cadence, Cadence being depicted in the book "Twilight and the Crystal Heart Spell" as being found in the woods as a pegasus by earth ponies, and it is possible she was not left there by Equestrians, but rather by a civilization of alicorns, and she was thrown out due to her birth as a pegasus. Hence, it was much easier for her to become an alicorn than it was for Twilight, who had to be put through magical tests and bear the elements of harmony. Actually, the fact that Cadence, who was possibly from this alicorn civilization, was the mother of Flurryheart lends more evidence to this theory, and could explain her birth as an alicorn rather than a normal pony.

If they were BORN Alicorns, they'd have to be BORN Princesses (like Princess Flury Heart). Twilight Sparkle BECAME a Princess when she BECAME an Alicorn (Grant it, they had to do the coronation, but that's just a formality to inform the kingdom).
So if they became Princesses (like Cadence and Twilight). And they couldn't get their Cutie Mark until AFTER becoming Princesses (because they didn't have that kind of power). Then they had to BECOME Alicorns in order to find their calling.

Also the aging difference between celestia and v.s twilight and cadence which is made quite clear. throughout the past seasons cadence aging has been shown as well as twilights, but celestia seem to remain immortal

Plot twist: they were born unicorns during the times of racism but originally didn’t care about the separation until their friend(who was in love with an earth pony) got them really thinking about the situation and together the three basically began a movement to unite the three tribes and after equestria was created, Celestia and Luna became alicorns and then the new rulers while their friend got with their lover and was the first pony to give birth to kids of a different race.

4:35 Alicorns, though, age much much slower than ponies of other races, so them not having their cutie marks while being way older than the ponies that surround them would be normal for them.
Maybe they have visions as an earth ponies ability because alicorns have all three types of magic (including earth ponies too?) ? If so, they could start off as any type of ponies and gain this ability when they became alicorns.
If Celestia was a Earth Pony, and Luna a pegasus, then the purple, blue, and white crystals in G5 could represent Twilight, Luna, and Celestia. Unicorn, Pegasus, Earth pony.

Based on Twilight's appearance in the last problem, i think it's safe to say the Sisters used to be unicorns since Cadance didn't have the same magically flowing hair that they do. Cozy Glow's didn't start magically flowing either when she became an Alicorn, but i initially assumed it was just because she didn't legitimately ascend like the princesses did, but the more I think about it....
I think it's more of an age thing rather than an types of ponies thing. Since Celestia and Luna are extremely old alicorns and Cadence and Twilight were younger, I think it's safe to say that the older an alicorn becomes, the more their appearance becomes.. More magical?

Because their mentor was star swirl the bearded who is a unicorn. Celestia and Luna were born before unicorns, pesai and earth pony’s were friends. So if they were born earth pony’s Celestia and Luna would not have been star swirls students. I don’t know if this makes sense but it’s what I think.

In a season 8 episode about Celestia's 1111th year of raising the sun for the first time, they said before Celestia Star Swirl and 5 other unicorns raised the sun and moon, but then one day they found out a student named Celestia has the talent to do it herself. I assume then Celestia was still a unicorn, in fact Star Swirl's student. We can't know exactly how old she could have been back then, but if she was still a filly when she got her wings, it would make a lot of sense.

When my friends saw the episode, they flipped out, but when I saw it my only reaction to them not being born allicorns was " how did my friends not know this before hand? They read the book too."

So following that logic Celestia and Luna must be considered most talentless ponies in whole Equestria as their "talents" dictated by celestial powers, not personal achievements. But if they were born as Alicorns, and you forget to mention their eternal dieties status, they had to overcome their problems like everyone else in their surroundings.
Friendship Is Magic Season 7, Episode 1 has established that Unicorns can also have that ability to have visions in dreams. Celestia and Luna being referred to as unicorns prior to the adoption of the term alicorn also help to disprove the idea that the two sisters were anything other then unicorns. Regarding the comics, there are so many inconsistencies in the comics do to bad writing that the comics really can't be used as a valid point of reference.

1. Their backstory says they CAME TO Equestria...meaning they were not born there.
2. If they were born alicorns that would make them seem more alien to their subjects which would drive a HUGE wedge between them and the common pony.
Well, alicorns are supposed to include Earth Pony magic, so even if they were not born earth ponies, they might have such senses. Celestia can teleport, and perform great feats of unicorn magic. So it is just as likely as the other races.
I have a fact to add to this theory. According to the books and shows,twilight was a unicorn and cadence was a pegasus. So I'm pretty sure that each alicorn has to be from a diffrent pony tribe, however since celestia and luna have the same blood they count as one princess. BTW this theory is unlikely the truth as it has only a tiny amount of evidence

Look at Celestia's worry face, along with Luna's 'you sure?' look. They did a similar thing in Equestria Girls when they 'badmouthed' Sunset Shimmer. Note that Sunset was and will be the Queen of the Crystal Empire. But if she returns, Cadance could be out of the job here, so Cadance might not want Sunset to come back.
She also wants to keep the image of her giving birth to Flurry Heart.
(Note during development Queen Chrysalis and Cadance are THE SAME PONY. "Flurry Heart" ≈ "F.H." ≈ "Face Hugger" is an inside joke)
In My Little Pony: Equestria Girls' "Forgotten Friendship", Celestia mentioned EVERY DECISION Sunset Shimmer made, it proves that Sunset Shimmer has a "KIND HEART", no BUTs or IFs. A big departure from "CRUEL AND DISHONEST", but might be true if Sunset took a drastic measure to save the Crystal Empire. She might have to do forceful things and lie to save it.
Some might say, "Oh, Celestia said the situation had changed. Oh, Celestia said Sunset is no longer that pony."
Remember, Celestia said the situation line with Twilight Sparkle in the group. Celestia never said only the two of them (Celestia and Sunset).
Want to include Twilight Sparkle in it? Because Sunset Shimmer is Twilight Sparkle's real mother, and Twilight was present when the Crystal Empire / Crystal Equestria was at its glory.
Also in a much more distant past. Celestia got jealous over her older sister, the 'ancient Twilight' (aka Twilight Sparkle's ancient reincarnation). Celestia perceived their mother (the ancient reincarnation of Sunset Shimmer) to love Twilight more than Celestia (hinted with Celestia faking her angry 'Am I not a Great Teacher?' face). So Celestia turned into Day Breaker and attacked ancient Twilight, similar to the much later on when Luna turned into Nightmare Moon and attacked Celestia.
A carving of 'Ancient Twilight' can be seen in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic's "Stranger than Fan Fiction". There she is potrayed as a benevolent Nightmare Moon-ish Alicorn.

It makes sence. But some people say they would have needed to do something to deserve being an alicorn thus meaning they would have to be a unicorn. which is not completely true. Other ponies can do special things to. Also some say they would also need their cutie mark first. But not everything that is special is worth a cutie mark.
