Solid advice. Real Books helped a ton with getting me playing (and still do especially since there are more tunes than time) but, to be a better musician, I always try to hear the cadence and the chord qualities. And that does get easier over time as become more familiar with tunes and their structures. Applying substitutions to “color” it your own is the fun part based on what I hear. It’s taken years to stop and actually “listen” to a song vs simply “hear” it, for me at least.
Hi LT ! Thanks for the video. I have a question, in the minute 4:29 you said “Dominant 6th” is that correct? If it’s so, what’s that ? I know about dominant 7 chords. Maybe it is another way to call a dominant chord that comes from its family. Thanks
Sort of related...I'm learning a tune right now by ear. I have the melody and about 75% of the harmony I know I have right. There are a couple of spots where it's hard for me to hear the harmony . How did you get past this when you were learning and developing your ears? Listen to the bass? Just listen over and over and over, trial and error until you get it? I refuse to sneak a peak at the Real Book! Even if it takes me months! Thanks
@@LTJazzGuitarawesome, so in the situation of if I reharmonize the turn arounds it should in theory blend with whatever they do? I’ve never been in the situation but this year I’ve decided to take playing more seriously and hope to get to sit in at a jam or two.
In the hands of a great player, everything looks so effortless....sigh :). Nice!
Words I need to hear. Good stuff Larry.
Thx Mark ‼️ great hanging the other day
Excellent work.
Thanks Larry! Great as always - will pass on to my students 🎶🎸🔥
Hi thanks for share ... I keep hearing about turnarounds its a sign!

Another great lesson, thanx!
Sinatra recorded "All of Me" that kept it relevant also.
" there aren't many ppl named Gerald and Seymour anymore" lol
Philly Philly 2 5. Great info. So true. Thanks
Do you remember in the movie “round midnight” with john McLaughlin playing those cool suspended chords on “body and soul”? That was AwEsOME 😎

I think he means a dominant chord built on the 6th scale degree of the key of C, so an A7, or in this case, and A7+5.
I guess you could call a 13 chord a dominant 6 chord
I botched it! It was an A7#5

Have any lesson spots open my friend?
Yes!
So, you show up to a jazz jam, do you stick to the book or change the turn arounds? Note, I’m not good enough to show up at a jazz jam.
Always gotta apply

@@michaelbateman2019 it's a great way to really be interacting with the music and good players will always be listening 🎧
@@LTJazzGuitar awesome! Thanks! And that answer definitely proves that I’m not ready to go to a jam haha
