The process of acquiring newer air fleet should've been initiated at least 2 decades back.
But, at that time, we were sleeping and ignoring Tejas. So much was the love for foreign fleet that we ignored Tejas.
Now, we blame HAL for slow deliveries etc.

except for the rafale, the sukois have new electronics but they won't last in a modern battle field. the hal tejas is a joke. when india was experienced in aircraft design during the cold war, the government didn't fund it thus the knowledge and experience is lost, and we end up with the tejas. I agree but the all aircraft are old in some way or the other.

Indian Air Force must be buying them for parts so that the present fleet of Jaguars & Mirage 2000 can be maintained TILL we do not have enough Tejas. The maintainance cost will only come to play ONLY IF we try to fly the purchased fighters ... They will never fly, they will be cannibalized to provide parts to our current fighter fleet , whose maintainance cost we are already bearing, anyway. That is why it is a wise deal.

We have been looking at the MMRCA fighter import for the last 15 years; we will probably waiting another 15 before we cancel and retender. Since Bofors India seems to have tied itself into so many knots that procurement of certain items through laid down procedures seems to have become impossible.

The pressure on IAF is created by IAF itself. If the MMRCA takes longer to materialize the IAF will have to keep looking at scrapyards of countries to maintain its fleet.

They are pushed by government to them so they have to accept the deal
You know why no other foreign country wants Tejas because it is assembled It have some kind of defects in it Look what Malaysia did they buy more expensive jet form korea than us eventhough we have to upgrade there Su 30 also in that deal

EU/Qatar jets are not utilized to max limit, they don't have vast and hostile borders....these acquisitions/additions will help maintaining uptime of existing total fleet of jaguar and mirage....

magic of indegenious system is that you can upgrade without any regulations from manufacturers abroad. Tejas will get upgrades throughout its lifetime because we own it.
We can't integrate Brahmos NG in Rafale but we can on Tejas.

*One SIMPLE suggestion :*
Take Tejas Mk1A and modify two things :
1. Use the GE 414 engine on it
2. Use CFT on Tejas Mk1A
You will get a far superior range, additional thrust and more power for radar/avionics...possibly higher payload capacity as well.
This solution will be cheaper and better than buying Mirages a similar solution can be used to get rid of the Jaguars. Don't be a junkyard collector for God's sakes.
If we use ge 414 engines on mk1A then this aircraft will fall in medium weight aircraft we need replacement of mig21.. we can’t replce mirage mig29 & jaguar with mk1a…. This will take again 5-6 years
I think India should let go of these old planes and invest in few more upgraded super sukhois till Tejas Mk1A is available in large numbers.

You are correct sir, but past is past, we can take lesson from it, so to not repeat it again in future and move ahead. The condition of IAF is not going to become good until atleast all Tejas mk1a will not get delivered. Seems like this condition will remain same or even get worse till 2030.

I think the same situation will be applicable on Su30 MKI in the future as well, if we don't think about the future.

The LCA Mk 2 should have been flight tested and in production by now in huge numbers. Can't expect that from our DPSUs. So we are buying antiques. Shows what IAF thinks of LCA and HAL.

Even in the MRFA (Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft) competition, India will only end up with fourth-generation fighters. Why, you ask?
1. The F-22? The Americans never sold it to anyone, not even their best friends.
2. The F-35? The Americans won't sell it to India because of the S-400 deal, just like with Turkey. And even if they did decide to sell, India would still have to wait years for delivery.
3. The Su-57? India won't touch that one.
4. The J-20? The Chinese wouldn't dream of selling it to any country.
5. The FC-31? Again, the Chinese wouldn't sell it to India.
6. The J-31? Yet another Chinese jet India won't get its hands on.
7. The KAAN? Turkey won't be selling that one either.
8. The KF-21? South Korea will prioritize their own needs and Indonesia's before even considering India.
9. The AMCA? Won't be ready anytime soon.
So, in the grand race for next-gen fighters, India is left scrambling for fourth-gen scraps, watching everyone else soar ahead.
HALs performance has been poor, can't produce aircraft engines, aircraft programmers only gets extended, India now reduced to buying second hand aircrafts for immediate survival.
Iaf is not taking decisions so they are themselves the reason

I have a second hand car and believe me maintaining a 2nd hand car is costly affaire especially when the car is not in production. How can gov be such naive?? if you don't have money then put 0.5% emergency defense cess on top of 18% GST (for temporary basis). In one year estimated collection will be approx $12B. (estimated GST collection for FY25 is INR 1.7T) - sufficient to buy 50 Rafale. Collection will be even more if you increase it to 1% for luxury items like expensive car, diamond, pubs and discos, cigarette and liquor etc. This will not hurt common ppl.

Even if Tejas induction had started in 2005 ( after 4 years of first flight ) ;
at a rate of 16 aircrafts per annum
for the 10 years we lost in its induction
we would have 160 more aircrafts i.e.
EIGHT more squadrons today ;
& that would have accelerated the mk2 program & probably we might have started mk2 induction by now.
I think IAF may be bought for spare parts to maintain existing fleets. He need to do this because of slow production of Tejas

The greed of our ' CHOSEN ' not the Elected leaders after 1947 and the continuation of Corruption by current leaders as well as ' Babus ' has brought us nothing but shame, on top of that our Jugaadu attitude towards everything and have kept us in this never ending cycle of not being able to achieve what other countries have been able to achieve. And this is not going to change, everyone who remotely sees any opportunity will leave this cesspool of a country and India will stay a developing country.
We are not acquiring Jaguar aircraft from the UK which have been decommissioned & not in flying condition. What is being considered is purchase of airframes so that spare parts of these to be used to keep IAF Jaguars in flying condition for the next few years.
On the other hand Mirage 2000 from Qatar are still in flying condition.
It is upto the skill of our officials to strike a good bargain with both these countries to our benefit.
Every country knows Jaguar is old and outdated and need to be scrapped rather than continuing with Jaguars is a Big Joke because their maximum and cruising speed is also ordinary and they can carry only ordinary payloads because their engines are Weak

French fighter jets are more than excellent in real time battlefield thats why Indian air force is still obsessed with upgrading mirage & Jaguar fleet , imagine how much advanced rafale is that in recent dogfight rafale beats su 35 & f22 raptor( few times )which showcases the technological superiority of French fighter jets

Delay in decision making, bureaucratic red tape is necessitating procurement of junks from other countries to keep old fighter jets operational. Nothing is changing in India despite china racing ahead. Definitely policy makers, ministers don't have technical or military background and this reflects in delay in decision making.
You certainly don’t have any clue about the cost and maintenance of fighter planes. Stop trying to fob off newspapers articles as experts opinion
Your argument here is flawed and biased, the systems which we are getting as second hand are readily available and can fly immediately, whereas new systems if given order today also will not be able to fly till 2028 and you don't factor in the inflation then for the new aircraft, also we already operate these aircraft and ours are also of same age so adding few extra will not make that much difference, then you get specific features, Indigenous Tejas can not offer you that much power and payload capacity, you have invaluable combat experience with these aircraft.

Indian Airforce becoming junk yards for the old aircraft. Even pakistan is doing better when it comes to inducting new aircraft. And delays in acquisition led to disaster in any battle scenarios with two of our nuclear armed neighbours. Not our government nor the Indian airforce is serious about these problems.
Looks like the Western defense industry has won again. And they did not even have to offer India latest technology gadgets. They just offered us an empty shell so that we can maintain our existing fleet. Who is to be lamed for this mess-the politicians, the bureaucrats or our armed forces?
We will never buy any jaguar or Mirage period. Mark my words.
