When small-time magician Oscar Diggs (James Franco) pulls one flimflam too many, he finds himself hurled into the fantastical Land of Oz where he must somehow transform himself into the great and powerful Wizard-and just maybe into a better man as well.
Starring James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, and Zach Braff and directed by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man). "Oz The Great and Powerful" arrives in UK cinemas March 2013.

I was in this movie as an Emerald City Kid. It was an incredible experience. Sam Raimi is an amazing director!
As I watched this in the theater I thought, 'what is this? a children's movie?' I almost walked out. But I stayed to the very end and was so glad I did. Finally Thomas Edison made sense. The ending of this film blew my mind. Absolutely loved it. Can't wait for it to come out on Blueray.
I love how they're going to make the Wicked Witch of the East seem so badass in this movie, yet we all know she get's killed by a house landing on her... Hahaha
0:44 please make a back ground like that I LOVE IT!
I grew up when The Wizard of Oz was a once a year broadcast (before cable TV, before VCR's, almost before electricity).
I can still remember being terrified of some specific scenes in the movie, and can still remember loving it and asking when it would be on again.
This has real potential.
Hoping, hoping, hoping.
I love the line Franco delivers in the beginning "...I don't want to be a good man. I want to be a great one!" Wow...true for us all, yes?
Love the change in Aspect Ratio from 0:40 to 0:47 ...very creative
This is a prequel ... she comes along, years later, in the movie we know and love:-)
the colours in this film look STUNNING
I love James Franco for his random career moves, heard he going to be a professor teaching short film class. Love this guy
Really pleased they're going from B&W to color on this film.
We might want to give this film a chance. A lot of talented people worked really hard on this movie. The least we can do is give them the benefit of doubt because of their talents. Kids will certainly enjoy this movie!
James Franco became one of my favorite actors after first watching Pineapple Express over a year ago..... Dude's awesome.
I love this!!
I love the way the witches hand scratches the table at the end
Love James. Honestly, he could make a movie about a mop and I'd be all like, "WE GOTTA WATCH THIS RIGHT NOW!"
Whoa... that little snippet near the end with the flying monkeys gave me a big burst of goosebumps
Love James Franco, Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis, pretty much everyone in this!!
despite the upgraded effects, nothing.. and i meen NOTHING will ever replace how crazy, scary, and amazing the movie "Return to Oz" was. that move was a trip.
More power to Disney for being the first to do an Oz backstory movie. Universal has been sitting on the rights to "Wicked" for years.
Kansas is notorious for it's Tornadoes...you know..Tornado Valley..anyways..I was a big fan of The Wizard of Oz growing up and I'm completely thrilled that they're making a prequel to it today. TWOO helped people right after the depression. It's colorful environment and acting was a sign of hope to all. It was much more than a movie back then. I'm proud to see it's been taken' a step further.
Its amazing how the trailer works so well without the dialogue...
I love James Franco random career moves
James Franco is the best actor and is very appropiate for a Disney movie...
It has James Franco, I'm sold. Can't wait.
Sort of reminds me of Wizard of Oz with a new twist can't wait to see this!
This is going to be so amazing, it's so much fun getting lost in such worlds. Out of the rabbit hole and into the tornado, ANOTHER ADVENTURE AWAITS!!!
Watching this and "Dorthy Of Oz" because ya know its a classic
I know right. I'm really excited about Oz because it's not overdone like batman or spiderman. It was the same way with Snow White and the Huntsmans and 2010's Alice in Wonderland. The original story wasn't remade into 10+ different versions so these movies were actually something to look forward to.
My new Favorite Movie... everything was well done... Fantastic effects... WORTH SEEING IN 3D!
I was actually like WOOOooooAAAaaaaHHH for a moment there when he went to oz and the screen widens with color
I like the unique angle and some original elements from the Dorothy Wizard I think it has potential.
i like how it apears it starts off black n white like the wizard of oz did
I think this looks great! Can't wait to watch it on a relaxing Sunday with a bucket of popcorn and my flip-flops.
An Oz prequel about how OZ became the great and powerful wizard, I'm down for that.
This is a prequel to a long awaited remake. Although I'm only going to see it tonight, it will be greatly appreciated to see the story behind Dorothy and even more exciting to await the film that may or may not take the place of the Original :)
Excited!
Everyone who's deliberately putting this film down isn't thinking straight. For one thing, Sam Raimi's favorite motion picture of all time is "The Wizard of Oz." He didn't even want to do this movie at first until he sat down and read the script. It is, in fact, faithful to Baum's original novels. Besides, since "Wizard" is Raimi's favorite movie, I trust his judgment and decisions as director of this movie. Let's just sit back and see how it goes.
the wizard of OZ books are like a series and the one with dorothy was only one of the books with OZ in it, so dorothy wasnt the main character and in the book with dorothy she actually went on to another part of the land of OZ after they met the wizard :)
Another re-hashed movie in 3D...just what we needed...
Why is James Franco so good at making facial expressions??
How is i just realize the existence of this upcoming movie? IT'S AMAZING!!!!
The Wizard of Oz is my favourite movie of all time. I think it's sad that the new movie will be so dark. I will miss the happiness and the cheering and the songs.
Well to answer your questions. 1. yes, I believe this is before dorthy comes to Oz because if you pay close attention this movie focuses on the man who will become the great and powerful Oz. 2. the person at 1:39 could be the wicked witch of the east. I could be wrong but that's just a thought.
Since the last Harry Potter every trailer has that "AAAAAAAAAWWWW" screaming in ti, over, and over, and over.
It's sort of like a title. Some rulers did change their names to match their country's or vice versa. They also went under sort of stage names within their kingship as well. They weren't all really namedd Louis and Peter and George. Those were just the names they ruled under.
this looks quite good. I'm impressed that they thought outside of the box on this one when filmmakers are copying and re-making these days. I'd definitely go see it. And IMO no one should remake the MGM Wizard of Oz; it was the right mix of directors, writers and actors at the right time that would likely never be repeated again!
I'm way more excited for this than I should be.
I demand more movies featuring James Franco .
I read negative reviews but decided to see for myself. This was just a little long in a couple scenes, but overall totally engaging, fun to watch, edge of your seat fun! I recommend it~
James Franco was perfect.
This is going to be beyond fantastic...I predict it will be a huge hit and I think James Franco is perfect as the young Oz...I don't want to be good - I want to be GREAT!
I hope this will be great. It comes out on my birthday so that what I'm planning on doing. I think it looks great.
Nothing compares to the Oz of 1939 with the charming elements of the old technical effects. But I am looking forward to see that movie, especially to see Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz :)
It's the Origins! The story of Oz, and how he came to be the great Oz
I'm glad this movie explores the arrival , of the Wizard too the land of OZ . Tthis will be great visual story telling
This looks amazing. It seems to follow the Oz books much better than the original.
I'm watching this because I love Zach Braff :)
I love the original Wizard of Oz. Even though this movie will definatley never be greater than W.O.Z, It looks like it will be good and I like the idea behind it, definatley going to see this when it comes out.
Here for Rachel Weisz...........OMG SHE'S AMAZING AND I'M HER BIG FAN :)))) I'M VERY CURIOUS ABOUT THIS MOVIE ....
re: 'What happened to Dorothy?'
- 'Oz the Great and Powerful' was cast as a prequel to 'The Wizard of Oz' (1939), rather than a remake of the film.
Danny Elfman did an amazing job on the music for this one! :D
I can't wait to see this movie!! i know it's not going to be like the original one!!! but looks like it's going to be an Awsum futuristic version of it! Wizard of Oz will always be my favorite all time movie!! i watched with my mom as a kid..now i watch it with my kids!!
it's set before the time Dorothy came to Kansas. this is when the wizard of oz is still being discovered :)
He doesn't want to be a great man... He wants to be WONDERFUL!
Surprisingly, I love this movie!!!! It is amazing!! I don't recremend this for kids probably under 10 years old...but it is really really amazing!
I can see an Oscar Win for Art Direction, cause wow these looks amazing!
I wanna see this for my birthday
Only problem I have with it is nothing except the people and few props look real. Part of why the Wizard of Oz still haunts my dreams is it ALL looked real. Painted backdrops, being physically there, beat CGI backgrounds in my opinion. They might as well have made this entire movie in animation.
Can't wait to watch this movie. If you already watched wizard of oz and Wicked the Musical, this one's a lot different. They made a lot of twists. So excited.
Like that there bringing another one of the stories to life.
Wow. Goosebumps much? I know i know its another remake (we are truly running out of ideas in this world) - but James Franco? Michelle Williams? Zach Braff? and the beautiful Rachel Weisz? And the woman who could turn me str8 cackling away as the wicked witch of the west - I worship Mila Kunis. This is going to be a fun ride - i knew alice was gonna suck before i saw it - Johnny deep even seemed rapey on the commercials - this just looks like a fun ride. and i welcome it.
this is when the wizard fist arrived in Oz... Dorothy came along years after! :)
come on, it's James Franco, he's fantastic man, give it a shot
I'm pretty sure it will be. That shot from 0:20 with the hat makes me think there will be.
I think so! I mean at the end of the trailer, it did show her hand! I hope so!!! :D
Ever heard of Return to Oz? It's actually a much darker "partial sequel" to Wizard of Oz, although it follows the books quite a bit closer than the 1939 musical. Definitely give it a watch!
This is taking place before Dorothy got to OZ. This is how the wizard of OZ got to OZ.
3 words for all of you people... GOOD JOD DISNEY!!!!!!
I'll watch any film with James Franco in
The great thing about this country is that if you don't wanna to watch it in 3d you don't have to watch it in 3d. You don't have to hope just don't watch in 3d! I myself will be watching it in glorious Imax 3d if possible.
its been what, about 80 years since the original film ? this remake i could accept :)
When The Wicked Witch of the West (Mila Kunis) cries near the beginning of the movie because she thinks Oz (James Franco) betrayed her you can see scars on her face where the tears rolled down her cheeks. This is because water makes her melt.
THIS IS GOING TO BE AWSOME!
Yeah, I know. It looks unreal, like it's from a storybook. It fits Oz so well, and recalls the 'unreal' look you see in the old movies.
I have read all the books....great movie trailer!! hope the movie is fantastic
They're including the china dolls!!!!!! That's my favorite part of the entire book!!
Oh her times coming! Dorothy's OZ ! comes out late this year , early next.
If you like the original Wizard of Oz, you will LOVE this movie. Go to it with an open mind. It's a really fun movie that will play on nostalgia.
Only in the film is Dorothy's journey to Oz a dream. In the book, it actually happened. Most other spin offs etc are not based on the MGM film but are based on the books.
I've read over 40 Oz Books, so I am skeptical, but hopeful. For those of you wishing for it to be more Wicked like, it's not get over it. They are not accepted to be part of the official Oz stories and Disney would not have the rights for it. Disney got the rights for the Oz Books in the 50s or 60s or so. They've held them since.
i sensed an oscar-awarded film.
this is a prequel, things that took place before she ever arrived.
nice to see Oz as not JUST a backdrop xD
The questions is not whether the movie will be good. The real question is what Bruce Campbell's cameo will be.
I think it's going to be a mix of the original Wizard of Oz and the 80s Return to Oz.
I hope you guys understand this isnt the Wizard of Oz everyone is used to. From the looks of it, this is a prequel showing how the Wizard came to Oz and how he became who he is (if that makes any sense).
This is a prequel, explaining how The Wizard got to Oz in the first place, and what the Land of Oz was like pre-Dorothy.
I think actors are often said to learn those kind of things... no, wait, it is quite extraordinary.
Its a prequel to the Wizard of Oz. This happened before Dorothy went to Oz, probably before Dorothy was even born. In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy meets the "wizard" Oz which is Oscar.
I promise that I will not miss.
it is and im glad this looks great for 3D
This looks incredibly beautiful (and highly entertaining). Definitely a must-see!
