The fact that Beethoven was completely deaf by the time he composed this, the final and most famous movement in his renowned 9th Symphony, is beyond incredible. He wrote "Ode to Joy" to accompany the words of a poem by the same name by the German poet and philosopher, Friedrich Schiller. It's a lyrical paean to the miracle of brotherhood, and what happiness can spark when mankind gathers as brothers under the sheltering wings of joy. My thanks to the conductor, the wonderful Rubén Gimeno, and all the musicians and singers who made this happen. I plan to watch this as my daily "happiness pill" from now on.
@@imac610 , I think you are right. I believe that is probably exactly how Beethoven did it. He had to have heard all the instruments in his head in order to compose such a beautiful piece, with such dramatic changes in mood and pacing building to that glorious finale.
@@pmacc3557 , I am not a musician but used to sing in a choir and we would have been lost without our conductor. He kept everyone on the beat, let us know when to sing softly and when to belt it out...he really controlled everything about the performance and brought out our best. Think about what an orchestra is...dozens of people seated in a semi-circle playing many different types of instruments arranged in groups...brass, strings, rhythm...and often, as in this case, voices as well. They cannot all see each other, so without a conductor, even though they all have the same music, how would they know when to start? How could they all rise to a crescendo in unison if they were not following the rhythmic motion of a conductor's arms? I know that to some, conductors just look like a guy waving his arms around, but they are so much more than that. Think of them as the traffic cop at a busy intersection without lights. I never appreciated playing in an orchestra throughout my school years. Now I'm an middle-aged man working in the office and videos like these make me realize how much I miss playing a musical instrument with others. What pure joy.
Have you started learning to play an instrument yet since you posted this comment? I started trying to learn the piano when I turned 40 nine months ago. I'm still only able to play a few basic pop songs, but that’s way better than my ability nine months ago.
Over the years I find myself coming back to watch this video time after time. No matter what state I'm in I know that listening to this will bring a tear to my eye, and peace to my soul
This made me in tears. Such beauty in humanity making beautiful things together. Made me think that we shouldn't be living in isolation. No one should be living on its own.
To see the shine on people's eyes. That is our reward for the hours of practice we do as musicians. This is Beethoven's gift to the world, one of many. Such an effective composer, his ode to joy really makes people smile. :)
Johnny Lopez I couldn't give a shit less for them, what did they do other than gawk? No, this was a performance for the little girl that put the coin down to start it, this is HER music.
Thank you, Ludwig van Beethoven. I'm sure you had no way of knowing that centuries after writing this, you would be touching people's hearts, bringing tears of happiness to their eyes, and bringing smiles in a world that often feels sad. Me, I needed this today.
To La'man K & Knight, I remem playing Cello in 4th gr it was hard, but as Uncle Sam's Misguiled Child (wrong term intended), "if it's hard get harder"!!!

I just love watching this over and over. The delight on the faces of people stopping to watch! The curiosity and interest and even joy on the faces of the children! The children are stopping to listen!
I write this on May 7, 2020. Today is the anniversary of the world premiere of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (1824, Vienna). I have always loved this video, but it seems particularly poignant and relevant in these difficult times. I feel silly but when I watch this video it brings tears to my eyes as it I so evident that music unites, inspires, and brings us all together. Jimi Hendrix said " if there will be peace in the world music will have to be a part of it " I think music could be the cause of it.

Thank you for this. I knew I'd heard the piece a thousand times. But Shazam did not recognize it. Your comment was most timely and helpful.
All the best.
yes., but important is not languages. important is the message of " Ode to Joy " all People become Brothers. This is our Chance to fight against higher Authorities who will shut down the mankind ( sorry for my bad english )
Every single time I watch this video I cry joyful tears, and I thought it was weird. Then reading the comments I saw I’m not alone!! ❤ It brings peace to my soul.. “Happiness is only real when shared”

I never appreciated playing in an orchestra throughout my school years. Now I'm an middle-aged man working in the office and videos like these make me realize how much I miss playing a musical instrument with others. What pure joy.
Living in England, with the stupidity of Brexit,I share your joy……….but for the happiness and unity which music brings.
Have you started learning to play an instrument yet since you posted this comment? I started trying to learn the piano when I turned 40 nine months ago. I'm still only able to play a few basic pop songs, but that’s way better than my ability nine months ago.
do you know this pieces name ?
@@riahirihab2645 The piece in the video is called "Ode to Joy", from Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony.

Fantastic ! The Banco Sabadell's power of music not just draws crowds but bring great joys and happiness. Salute
I have watched many flashmob videos over the years but this one has never been bettered. Bravo to all who conjured up this magical performance.
Samhain Tollins Prat!!
I always, always cry at this. It's beautiful. So very beautiful. Thank you.

I agree your opinion.
I am still listening to this Ode Of Joy today, 6th Dec 2019. Still as spectacular as ever.
***** It means something when someone who has a trollface as there icon says something deep.
Amazing, isn't it? The longevity of his genius. Brought tears to my eyes too, and I've heard (and played!) this piece more times than I can count.
ZakuroVAarchive The power of good, old fashioned classical music.
anyway beethoven knew that his real reason to keep on living though he was often sad and angry was the gift and the task of giving us the joy of his music: through pain we can reach heaven!
I never get tired of this video. There’s something magical about music, if only for a short time it brings all people together.
I just love watching this over and over. The delight on the faces of people stopping to watch! The curiosity and interest and even joy on the faces of the children! The children are stopping to listen!

I come to this video time and again to restore my faith in humanity.
so true.......
You're not alone
👌
How does an ad for a bank restore your faith in humanity?
crazy10bears music itself dude, forget the fact bout ad whatsoever
I write this on May 7, 2020. Today is the anniversary of the world premiere of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (1824, Vienna). I have always loved this video, but it seems particularly poignant and relevant in these difficult times. I truly hope this kind of street life--full of innocence, wonder, exuberance and...well...joy--can return to Sabadell and everywhere else in the world.
Your comment shall be engraved in the ever lasting collection of digital media.
I too did this(left a digital time capsule) on Alan Silvestri's orchestra
Ey thats my birthday!
Then let's meet here and comment once again on May 7th, 2024 for 200th anniversary.
This is my favorite video on the internet. I was shown it last year by my music teacher and ever since I’m just so obsessed with classical music and orchestras. Oh and I’m a 14 year old girl from New Jersey.
From Minnesota in the U.S. I am grateful for this song, this performance, these beautiful faces expressing the joy we all need today. May the World be well, safe, and whole again, but most of all, join our hearts in joy.
Esa niña vivirá con ese recuerdo de por vida
This is maybe the umpteenth time I've watched this splendid video. I'll never tire of seeing it again and again and yet again. It just makes me feel so good inside. Thanks to Banco Sabadell for sponsoring this production.
I'm Italian. In these days we are fighting against corona virus. The battle is hard but we are strong people and we will go on! Greetings from Italy! ❤

This video means a lot to me. I give my thanks to all involved in this
video and wish I could express my gratitude.
😘
I come back to this video once in a while, and it never fails to put a smile to my face
This made me cry. I hope the day comes again where we can be together in public spaces to witness beautiful music that showcases what humans can do when they come together. My favourite part was the group eating a meal who left the table so fast when they heard the violins! I miss they joy and spontaneity I saw on their faces, I can’t remember the last time I saw that most human reaction. 🥺
It brings tears every time I hear this. Act cool.
watching it again in 2019, and my heart always melt when I hear this pieces. my tears just falling down,

I don't care that it's an ad
I don't care that only few know the lyrics
Fact is this piece of music alone being chosen as european hymn is one of the best decisions out of many europe ever made. It blows any national anthem out of the water being so epic. Not even the star spangled banner nor the marseillaise come up to it's knees of epicness
This is amazing. Some of us were born to play music, I was born to listen
I never get tired of watching and hearing this.
Every time I watch this I get chills ❤ the beauty, gracefulness and magnitude of the sound of music and voices joining generations!
Ten years ago, how time flies so fast. I watched this video days after it was uploaded. Many things have changed but the emotion I feel listening to this is still the same. Oh how I miss my youth.
This reminds us that music elevates. Music brings us together. Music inspires. The happiness on these peoples’ faces is heartwarming. When we work together and listen to each other, the result is magical.
I discovered this video only about a year ago, and the emotion it evoked then is still with me now. I watch this frequently and it never fails to move me. How I would have loved to have been there! I hope the children who clearly enjoyed the performance will keep that memory. Wonderful - and joyous!
I don't know why ... but it makes me cry ...
---
If I were that little girl, I would definitely be inspired by all the musicians over there and promise to myself that one day in the future I would also have such potential to give good things like this to the world ... and ignite people's dreams ...
Your tears are of JOY AND APPRECIATION...The best kind of tears !!!! XOXOXO
am not a good music listener but whenever I felt depressed I watch this fabulous performance, music makes me refreshed and end with happy tears, I am watching since 2013 from Tamil Nadu, India
I feel silly but when I watch this video it brings tears to my eyes as it I so evident that music unites, inspires, and brings us all together. Jimi Hendrix said " if there will be peace in the world music will have to be a part of it " I think music could be the cause of it.
thank you so much for sharing that quote of jimi...beautiful !! ~☆

They made me want to cry. It's so touching. And also, it warms my heart in some way.
one of my professors showed this to my class, and I literally had to contain myself from crying because I thought it was so beautiful, and I got so lost in the music. This is a beautiful thing, even if it was rehearsed. I can't get enough of this video.
Music so nice
I happened upon this by accident. It had me absolutely sobbing with joy. What a phenomenal thing to see in person. I wish I had been there!!!
This warmed my heart. My mother would have loved it god rest her soul. My dream was to take her to the last night of the proms , but she sadly passed away nearly 7 years ago. The last night of the proms in London is still my dream , in honour and respect of my mum.

Breath-taking! Amazing! Lovely! Joyous! Sensational! It brings tears. I have no other words. I just can't find any to express what I feel.
And this how life should be, people coming together in NO fear and enjoying a beautiful moment together.
❤️🙏🏻 looking back at this seems like a dream at a time like this when many are quarantined to fight the horrible virus. Praying that we can return to life like this that we used to take for granted. Praying for Italy and praying for all humanity.

I love this, that little girl in red, up the lamp post conducting then holding her mouth in awe is heart warming

Casa tanto me acuerdo de esta publi, la mejor campaña de mkt que he visto... la busco, y la veo 2 o 3 veces seguidas, siempre con la misma emoción...
The girl climbing up the lamp is my favorite
The two kids making believe they're doing the conducting....I remember doing that, almost 5 decades ago now.
Me too
Tha little girl who put a coin in tha hat in tha beginning had tha best seat in tha house. She must love music cause never moved from that same spot.
Mine too! She was conducting as well.
Here's to all the tomboys out there climbing and scraping their knees.

I admit, I've watched this video more than a dozen times! So moving and beautiful. WE NEED to BRING THIS BACK!!!
後にも先にも最高のフラッシュモブです、感動です
Did anyone else notice how the people WITHOUT cellphones blocking their faces seem to be enjoying this whole thing a lot more?
But yes, amazing video.
I was going to point out the exact same thing! So proud to be catalan!
And here I am again... so wonderful... and the tears still here... amazing.
To be honest, I don't care weather this flashmob was organised properly or not. The only thing which is important for me in this film is Music and the way it is performed. That was amazing! The reaction of passers-by and people sitting in the pavement cafes is priceless. Great job!!! Thank you for sharing
A méditer !!

One cannot listen to this amazing piece of art, music, divinity, without tearing up... at least I cannot. Just hearing the first few notes make me feel all choked up....
No words, too beautiful. And I wish all Britain people to listen before to go to referendum ...
They would be still in Europe...

I always watch this video over and over again because it's so powerfull, it touches people so deeply. And for a marketing person it's even more touching to see what communication and advertising can do. The concept of it was so simply perfect and strong. I always end un crying while watching it. This is art.
