Hi, Cow Turtle, I just watched one of your Shorts about your eel pit. Do you have any videos of what one would need to start such a project like this??? I also Subscribed to your channel 😊 GREAT JOB 👏😇
This has quickly become one of my favorite things on this app. You’re clearly dedicated to these fish & doing everything in humane & safe conditions for you & the fish. Much success to you, good sir.
Cool setup! One suggestion. Put some sort of a lips/raised/sealed off area around the holes. That way you have some protection against someone spilling something (e.g. a container of bleach, overflowing washing machine, etc) and having it run down into the pit.
I used to enjoy posing this question to people - "If you had to create a video that would get a million views on RUclips, what would you do?" I thought I had a pretty good sense of what drove people's engagement. I never would have guessed that some dude building an eel pit in an underground cistern would have me so enraptured. These eels have taught me a lot of things, including, apparently, humility. Such wise creatures.
There’s a market for honest genuine relaxing content that you learn from and can also chill to. Just do the thing you do well. Don’t worry about the views.
Dunno about the livestream but the relaxing style is so refreshing. RUclipsrs always try to be “exciting” and it’s nice to have a chill and informative channel
Projects like these are always super interesting to me, as you said, there are plenty of ways to add and expand and I will be lookin forward to see what you end up doing with it!
I have some unique anxiety related to aquariums. I’m specifically talking about the big multi tank/habitat/enclosure facilities you can visit. Channels like this that feature people just talking in a relaxed manner help me essentially “treat” my anxiety without having to schedule trips to aquariums. Thanks for everything you do!
i'd actually pay to have access to a 24h underwater live stream of the eel pit and just put it on as a sort of ambiance stream while i work or when i just wanna watch that beautiful little ecosystem for some R&R. Maybe you could think about doing something like that Cow Turtle? edit: think of all the upgrades you would be able to afford with the extra revenue!
i will forver be profiling potential future homes as to whether they have a cistern that i can build an eel pit in, thank you for opening my eyes to this possibility
I love that you show us cool and informative stuff just to show it. I kept expecting the video to cut off to some “exciting” thing but it’s nice and mellow and cool. Thanks for just keeping going the same way you started. Such a cool journey this has been
@Cow Turtle, ifyou want to reduce the noise of your 'water fall'. Go for a ventur instead. Essentially, you have the pipe in the water, but in the centre of the pipe, you have a smaller hose that goes up to air. Essentially, creating a water vacuum that sucks air from another area and push it into the water. Increasing oxygen.
True marimo moss balls do well and high to little light. That would help with your oxygenation and pretty much nothing eats them (that I'm aware of or experienced) and they won't entirely take over or make a mess of your water like other moss varieties
@@entrippyZ For a concrete saw you're better off using water if possible, to keep the dust from flying around. It also helps keep the blade cool, especially helpful if you wind up cutting into rebar.
When buying a house it's important to consider if you have enough room for the Eel pit. I'm gonna be single forever but hey I'll have a workshop, an eel pit, a bass pond, a lab, and whatever else I learn from RUclips
If you make the upper part of your new filter airtight and well filled (so it won't collapse) you can achieve a much higher flow through it since then only the difference in inlet and outlet height counts. With all these fish and food in them a powerful filtration will be needed. A trickle filter on the way down might also be a very effective addition.
First of all, gotta love the sturgeons, I catch sturgeon in my river which is always nice, second of all, I would LOVE to see a sturgeon slurp a smelt from a view that we can see its mouth extended , do you think it is possible to make it happen?
What I love about these videos and this creator is the care and proper housing for these animals. Far to many fish and reptile channels on this platform are extremely disgusting. For example right on my street in nova Scotia there is a man with very large fish in tanks unfit for it. I'm sure you know who I'm talking about. He has many LARGE catfish and Asian arowana, can't spell it sorry. And he keeps them in basically a walk in closet sized tank. Keep being a decent role model my friend.
Nice setup, i like to watch your videos. But everytime i do i cant stop thinking about how you are not afraid of moisture building up in the foundation and into the concrete, special when i se that hose just dripping down the wall ? Is there any plastic at the buttom ? It just looks like the concrete is sponging up all the water, i would be pretty worried about that tbh.
I have a friend who has a pond and he has a awesome white sturgeon. He also has some Flounder muscles and crayfish but that got me thinking all those would look awesome in your pond. Seeing some flattish swimming around.
One note on filter socks. They have to run at a low pressure diffetential to be effective. The bioslime will just push right through that unwoven floss if you push any harder than a couple inches of water column.
I'd definitely recommend some kind of floor-anchored door jamb/block or something, to prevent that small door by the tubes in the garage from potentially striking and damaging them.
By far my favorite find on youtube this year. I am so curious as to what this thing could look like as your subscription base grows. Aside from upgrades to the tank itself, which I will get to, you could install Normal and IR cameras and potentially stream different sections of the pit. I recently watched an INSANE reality type show literally called fishtank where sam hyde stuck 8 people in a random house, installed multiple cameras in every room, and used a streaming service to stream the house 247 where the viewer had the ability to change cameras and watch andlisten to whichever room they pleased. Obviously that is something you COULD do when you get into the millions of subs (which you will, your channel is too unique and blows all others who make similar content out of the water), but this will be interesting to watch. As for upgrades to the pit itself, is rise in water level something you plan on doing? What other large fish could you put in that would jive well with the current occupants? I can't remember if there are shrimp, but would it be possible to find prawns large enough to survive? WIth all of the cinderblocks providing excellent cover, are there any large crustaceans you could add like crayfish or large freshwater lobster if those even exist?
Aquaponics would be awesome especially with the others you're gonna be stocking adding more nutrients, you can also tell people with a straight face you have plants in the eel pit system lol
Can you do a video explaining how the filtration works? I am used to seeing filter systems that force the water through media (I not familiar with large setups).
That water dropping is going to raise the oxygen level by a ton. What I would do is set aquaponic racks along that back wall inside the pit with some grow lights, have the water that’s flowing down feed the plants. The water feeds the plants and the plants filter the water
Never thought of fish breaking their bones before, but of course they do. What happened to Garlic that caused a bone to break? Bullied in the tank? Escape attempts?
I don’t think many tornadoes or hurricanes hit his part of the world, but if inclement weather did hit, the eel pit, which is rain cistern underground, below his garage, would probably come through ok. Honestly, if really bad weather hit, I want to be IN the eel pit.
simple as, i see eel pit update i click
Exactly love the content ❤️

Absolutely 😅

I love how all your underwater shots look like they are being filmed in a wild river somewhere, so cool!

On one hand, I've always found eels fascinating and this is a lovely project. On the other hand, having an eel pit is some doctor evil stuff lol
These eel pit videos are relaxing AF. If you set up a camera with a 24 hour livestream, I'd put it on the TV once I get my own place.
Dunno about the livestream but the relaxing style is so refreshing. RUclipsrs always try to be “exciting” and it’s nice to have a chill and informative channel

This is some good RUclips my friend, always here for an eel pit update 👌

I love your eel pit and seeing it flourish.
Also quick tip, whenever you're drilling into concrete have a vacuum running right at the bit. Would save you from cleaning afterwards
would that work on a concrete saw too?
@@entrippyZ not sure tbh, wouldn't hurt to try though

It’s a rainwater cistern that’s held water since 1958 with no signs of issues yet.

You’re the eel pit guy!! I just found this channel from a 7 year old reddit post talking about keeping wild fish that’s so funny
I am curious how you figure out how much food to put in to maintain all the fish, given how many different species and sizes there are
A couple of plastic 55 gallon drums full of pea gravel would make great filters for the pit.
I'd definitely recommend some kind of floor-anchored door jamb/block or something, to prevent that small door by the tubes in the garage from potentially striking and damaging them.
Few shelves with some waterfall expanding foam and stone to direct the water could have a good ladder type fall
I love the crabs… always up to something
Absolutely love these eel pit vids, if possible you should try and catch a redear sunfish and add it to the pit, redears are one of my favorite fish
Awesome eel pit! Sorry if this is off putting but, do you eat them at all? Freshwater eel is really tasty meat...
These projects are interesting and fun to watch but one question can you add some plants?
Are you planning to get more sturgeons? They're amazing!!!
If you get another sturgeon, you’re gonna have to name it ‘Melba Toast’. Can’t have caviar without Melba toast.
9:00 amazing Crunchwrap supreme cameo
You have the best names for your fish :)
Really like the content. How do you clean the gravel of fecal mater?
How does a fish break its back? And what does the healing process look like? I cant imagine thats a pleasant experience.

Can you do a video explaining how the filtration works? I am used to seeing filter systems that force the water through media (I not familiar with large setups).
how did u get an australian lungfish when they are protected and nearly extinct?
Its usually just illegal to import these fish. If someone has been breeding them since restrictions started you can still own one.
Perhaps this question already answered but
How this fish get sun light??
It is ok for fish not get sun light for their metabolism ??
Man your a lucky guy! So jealous! 💯❤️🤙🏼
Is the eel pit fresh or salt water?😊
Have you thought about getting walleye or other types of fish?

Id agree to this. If it was practical would be great. Even just low light stuff.
Or in the IBC itself do floating grow beds.

Have you ever thought about spotted bass. I feel like they would do well, unlike smallmouth.
I've noticed that the gills are visible on the sturgeons. Is that normal or do they have some sort of gill plate defect?
I’m not 100% sure honestly I see lots of pictures of diamond sturgeons with gills like it though.
How can you tell the pit is getting too crowded?
When do you start throwing the bodies in?
You could do a hour stream of the tank and throw it on youtube I'd deffo watch it haha
I will always love CrunchWrap Supreme, such a cute name. 😂
You should install a trap door above the eel pit so you can pretend you're a James Bond villain with their shark tank.
And when he drops his enemies down into the eel pit, they'll be gently nibbled to death by eels (:
What are your major concerns with having the fish currently? How many days can they survive if like a tornado or hurricane came through?
