- The Entire 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament | Dragon Ball
Following a three year timeskip after the events of the Fortune Teller Baba Arc, our heroes make their way to the 22nd World Tournament (Tenkaichi Budokai), expressing their hopes of demonstrating the fruits of their training in order to win the title of "Strongest Under the Heavens". However, their hard work doesn't come without a challenge, as Master Roshi's former rival, "Master Shen" of the "Crane School" is in attendance of the Tournament as well, introducing his two disciples "Tien" and Chiaotzu", who prove to be more of a challenge than the Turtle Hermit School could have prepared for. To make matters worse, the Crane school is out for the blood of Master Roshi and his students, due to the downfall of Mercenary Tao, otherwise known as Master Shen's younger brother. As the the matches heat up, Goku and his friends must fight for their masters honor, and their own lives.

I wish we could have had a few more arcs with Tien being Goku's rival before Piccolo and Vegeta were introduced. His story arc was so good, and he is one of the few characters in the DB universe that I was genuinely interested in seeing growing. He had the ambitions of a Sayian, but with his humanity allowing him to be more grounded and emotional instead of just lusting for battle. Would have loved to see him as Gohan's mentor instead of Piccolo. (Unpopular opinion, I know)

Finally got around to watching. That was fantastic! I mentioned this last time but seeing this after the tournament in Super, it's just so obvious that this is way more interesting. I know there's way less energy beams here but there far more character development.

I don't get people who prefer Super. Don't get me wrong, the fights are certainly flashy and intense. But where the character development?
One of my favorite scenes in DBZ is when Perfect Cell kills Trunks. Vegeta becomes enraged, attacks Cell but to no avail. Cell easily dispatches him as well. He would have been killed but Gohan rushes in that takes the blow, severely damaging his left arm in the process. Vegeta realizes that he hasn't really been of any help at all. Perfect Cell was able to transform because of him, he wasn't able to do anything except be a hindrance to Gohan. And he apologizes. Vegeta, one of the most prideful characters in all of anime, apologizes. The last time Gohan stepped in to save Vegeta was during the fight with Recoome and Vegeta just chastises Gohan for saving him instead of attacking. This time, he did nothing of the sort. It was just as shocking to the audience as it was to Gohan, for sure.
What does Super have that even compares to moments like this? It honestly feels like the creators read the Dragon Ball Z wiki and said "Ok, people fight and characters talk. We can do that." And sure, distilled to its basic components, that is what happens. But the heart is missing. It's just cold and sterile, without any emotion.

I love the 22nd TB so awesome! The old tournaments were so much fun, unlike a certain modern tournament who was nah in concept. 28:33 it wasn't their first ever battle, they briefly fought in the start of training with M. Roshi. You probably forgot about the Z rock challenge when you said that. The fight of Goku and Tenshinhan was one of the most epic ever, especially this round. Round 2 was less exciting because Goku was far superior to Ten at this point. There is a line Tenshinhan said in the English dub that I wish was in the manga. "The goal here is for you to die, how that happens I really don't care."
The choreography in this arc was absolutely insane

This was a great tournament. Both Krillin fights are awesome, Tenshinhan's character development is well done, and that ending was such a clever way to end a fight and keep the carrot dangling for Goku. It doesn't get too grim, but it works considering the very next thing that happens.

Tien was a beast in this Arc and he did alright for himself in the King piccolo arc tho he got owned and his 2nd Fight with Goku was great Tien is definitely underrated

I remember in the anime Shin tried to kill Goku in his sleep and Goku chased him until Tien told his Master that having Goku lost in the ring would be more satisfying then killing him at that momet

Damn, it always gets dark when you realize what happens at the very end of the saga.. if you remember how Goku reacted on Namek.. then you know something had to have happened to Krillin back then..

At first I thought I missed an arc then I remembered that the manga doesn't have the filler episodes that the anime does. Unlike some though I actually like the filler episodes. In the anime Goku meets tien and chazou before the tournament and has a poor opinion of them. This arc Leads to the more serious arcs that led to what we see later in the z portion. I love the tournament arcs and og dragon ball is still a massive part of dragon ball and is essentially whether that's in manga or anime

I'm glad you liked it. When I first read this translation, I was confused by the names they gave Tien and Chiaotzu as well. We got one more arc until OG Dragon Ball is done, and that'll likely be released next week!
