Nimai is joined by vegan educator, public speaker, and content creator- Earthling Ed. With his experience in animal advocacy, Ed shares about compassion, shifting stereotypes, and the misinformation fed to us by the meat industry. Recognizing that we don't need a few perfect vegans, we need everyone to do their part- no matter how small- to reduce their contribution to this industry. Ed shares how he has shifted his approach to educating people on the truth, and how he uses his platform today as an empowering catalyst for change.

Fantastic podcast. So often I'm lithe to lose my way emotionally in conversation with non-vegans, but the best way is always to ease them into it and listen to what they think, understand their experience and go from there. I became vegan in 2006, after watching Earthlings also. I was a vegetarian before. And had no clue of the truly satanic cruelty and torture that animals go through. Never will I support any industry that treats another sentient, living being like this. Due to this change, I look younger than what I really am. Like 12 or 15 years younger. Now I also have excessive physical energy. I run 6.5 miles a day, and still feel hyper afterwards. I also try to lift some weights. But not too much, as I don't want to look like a guy. A vegan diet will give you longevity, energy, the best, healthiest quality of life, and make you a better human. Animals deserve to be loved, spoiled, and protected. Not abused and tormented. Besides my faith in God, as a Christian Seventh-Day Adventist, becoming vegan is the best decision I've made in my life. If humanity could go vegan, Earth would be more like paradise.

I'm currently on this journey so it's reassuring to hear that it's about always about going cold-turkey but that it can be a gradual process.
It reminds of when you ween a baby into eating solid foods. You wouldn't just go from a formula diet to a full course solid meal, you gradually introduce it to them. The same approach can be applied for transitioning to a more plant-based diet.

As a vegan for the last 40 years and healthy, the idea that somehow our diet is lacking and a problem is a constant scare story. So long as a vegan you don't have a junk diet - which is not unheard of in the UK and USA in the omnivore - most of us are just fine.
    I eat extremely well....
As to protein, this never ending concern from the omnivore about vegans is unnecessary, as we tend to eat grains, seeds, pulses and vegetables: the most protein in veg include broccoli, spinach, asparagus, artichokes, potatoes, sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts.
Last but not least the never ending worry we vegans don't get all our 8 essential amino acids. All 8 are in meat but in a vegan diet this will come in combining food. For example beans on toast and you have all 8 amino acids.
Of course people get sick .........I believe the 'average' Brit and American still eats an appalling diet, few eat the requisite '5 a day' of veggies, let alone the 10 that is now being recommended. So please stop worrying about us vegans and worry more about the Pizza, KFC and McDonald and take away diet that is so prevalent in the UK and USA.
And the SIZE of so many omnivores in the UK and USA boy oh boy! There is an epidemic of cancer and diabetes et al due to the average diet most eat. And now Covid-19 has shown that being Fat, Large or Obese is dangerous. Age you can't change but slimming down you can. Eat properly, eat plants of all sorts and see the results...... you'll like them.

I’ve seen you on Instagram and have always used you as an example when people use health as an excuse not yo be vegan, but I had no idea you had a podcast. I am a huge follower of Ed. I instantly subscribed as soon as I saw this and am excited to continuing watching all of your content! Great pod. 💚

Even as a vegan myself I never used to pay much attention to Ed Winters and thought he just perpetuated the stereotype of the overly sensitive soft spoken hippy type vegan.
I now realize I was totally wrong about him. Ed Winters is an extremely intelligent man and a wonderful speaker and he does marvels for the vegan movement.
I can't wait to get his book once its released!

I got into a vegan diet very slowly and in large part thanks to the content the vegan doctors put out. Years and years of watching vegan content and cooking vegan and vegetarian meals and noticing how I liked how it makes me feel. I was primed and ready to eat a vegan diet full time but never made the transition until I started dating an ethical vegan. While I enjoy not consuming animal products the ethics of veganism hasn’t fully sunk in with me. I’m in it for some combination of reasons and to be absolutely honest I feel like vegan ethics are second to my love of eating a whole plant based diet. I cheated on my diet in a moment of weakness, After Halloween I raided my kids candy and the guilt I felt was for how unhealthy the choice to eat that crap was. I wasn’t worried at all about the dairy cows who’s milk was in the chocolate. I don’t know if a strong belief in the ethics as represented in the definition of vegan are in my future or not. I still wear a leather jacket I’ve had since high school and wool socks my dad bought me recently. I’m still early on and have only been eating vegan for six months, lost 55 lbs by the way.

      Congratulations !
      Please do these four things.
      1) Eat enough calories.
      2) Eat the right amount of protein
      3) Eat a variety of plants
      3) Take vitamin B12 regularly
Otherwise, you will end up like stupid vegans who ruin their health.
      You can do it.

I tell people that we wouldn't be here today without animals. We've eaten them we've used them for farming, we've used them for protection, for pest control, for travel for transportation, clothing, tools and on and on. So then I tell people we no longer need to exploit animals for our survival. It's time we thank them and give them a break and stop exploiting them.

I got started with Veganuary two years ago, its online support and recipes delivered to your inbox. It helped to have community support to start off (even though on and off vegetarian for a decade;) I became vegan for health, but a few weeks in I had a strong and solid feeling of being aligned with my true values. It feels amazing, and I love being vegan. So the health perspective is VERY important to include and respect every newbie vegan that starts off there.
I also said to myself that I would eat eggs my next birthday😅 however, eggy tofu scrambles from rainbow plant life and chickpea omelette made eggs completely obsolete. In Norway, there are so much advertising from egg, dairy, meat and fish industries, and it is partly funded by the government and even sugary dairy products are deemed as «healthy».

He is a powerful and humble presence for the vegan community and the planet we have the privelege of residing on. I've almost finished listening to the audible version of his book and as always he has such a beautiful way with words to convey a critical message. On another note Nimai, I've just seen that we share the same birthday!! Thank you for sharing with us this interview with Ed.

If you eat the right way it’s better for yourself too. Look at Nimai right here, he’s a vegan bodybuilder so the stereotype of the sick, malnourished vegan isn’t true… only if you don’t eat enough. If you eat the right way on a vegan diet it’s much healthier than eating all the disease-causing foods that people eat all the time, every day.

One thing I see in some of my fellow vegans is a reliance on individual consumer choice. That's not enough, we need to organize, form boycotts, organize against lobbying interests, we need to vote out right-wing and centrist politicians. Simply "voting with your dollar" isn't remotely enough.

I'm Christian and I'm vegan, the animal cause is for everyone who has love and compassion for animals, we can all choose not to have cruelty and suffering in our meals.
It's not about religion, it's about compassion for animals, it's about not accepting the cruelty which animals are treated by humans, forcing animals to have a lifetime of suffering, exploiting, torturing and killing them in the most cruel ways for profits and greed and to satisfy human gluttony.
Regardless of our beliefs or religion, we must all fight against all kinds of cruelty that humanity commits to animals
