Throughout that tournament, all opponents paid their attention to Ruud and Marco of course took advantages. Totally, considering all the season at club and national team, Gullit deserved to win it.
There is a strong argument to be made that Gullit is the most complete player ever. Right through his career, Gullit played as centreback, sweeper, defensive mid, as a number 10, as a winger (both on right and left!) and as centre forward AND was world class in each of these roles. He does not get the plaudits he deserves...and yes he had a better 1988 than Van Basten and deserved the ballon d'or (as much as it is a non-sense of an award (and in my opinion actually worthless). Only Maradona was better than Gullit that year.

van basten needed a playmaker, with man to man marking. Gullit versus van basten was non sense they played for each other.
