    Data logs would show he does NOT know what he’s talking about. Timing being pulled and knock correction constant while running 87 on a 93 tuned engine. Just because you don’t “Hear” knock, Does not mean there isn’t constant knock events going on while the engine is under load. I think engineers know more than the average joe with enough money and not enough brains.

    It would be best if you used a higher octane-rated fuel. Just because it runs and you don't hear the detonation doesn't mean it's not having knock. I used 87 in my old Chrysler 300C a few times when the manual said to use 89. I remember once having it serviced at the dealership to have a general overlook and fluids changed. They asked me if I ever heard the engine knocking. It confused me until they told me they saw a few knock events on their scan tool. If you are in higher elevations, you can get away with it, which is why they have 85 octane (not to be confused with E85), but the closer you are to sea level, the more you want to get to what the manufacturer specifies. If you drive hard, you should use the higher octane anyway, in my opinion, to avoid the potential of it happening. My Ram has a stock 5.7 Hemi, and it will ping if I floor it which is why I run 89. My grandfather used 87 in it when he was still around with no issues, but then again he didn't drive it like he stole it the way I do... hard to kick the speed habit when you've done it for so long in a 300. 🥴

  • @Cyberronnin
    @Cyberronnin 4 месяца назад +9

    The reason they recommend higher octane fuel is because of power and efficiency, so no you may not hear knock, or have an engine light on but he isn’t running his engine with optimal performance. Higher octane fuel also has more detergents to protect the engine, the little driving you guys just did really doesn’t show anything, if he commonly tracks his car he will for sure experience knock and lower performance under endurance driving.. there’s a reason 100 octane racing fuel makes a difference over 87

  • @Sean_C6.2
    @Sean_C6.2 4 месяца назад +5

    Long time mechanic here. Felt I needed to add some information here from experience. First of all, I highly suggest you use whatever octane gas your owner’s manual recommends you use. If it says premium only, that means the engine is tuned for premium. Yes the engineers have probably idiot proofed the tune but that doesn’t mean the engine will run just as good on regular nor not be susceptible to any detonation. Secondly, when it says “premium” on the pump, that’s not just some marketing BS, the fuel is actually of a higher quality. You would be shocked to see the difference between the inside of an engine that has only run regular vs premium. Regular fuel is NASTY and will leave your intake ports coated with a thick sticky carbon residue that’s very difficult to clean. A engine that’s only run premium fuel on the other hand will still look new on the inside even after 150,000 miles. I’ve seen a single tank of bad quality fuel wipe out a vehicles fuel pumps and injectors. These are expensive cars, you do not want to be cheeping out on stuff like that, if you’re going to do that, you might as well skip out on oil changes as well.

The owner manual even says it is acceptable but mid grade is recommended (at least in the rams, but it’s the same engine as an r/t so I don’t see why it’d be different). Also, the lifter/cam shaft issues are caused by oil not the gas used, which is why you shouldn’t idle them once the high idle passes. I saw a video from a mechanic saying swapping to a hellcat oil pump may help it be *less* of a worry for the 5.7 since it feeds more oil every cycle than the standard ones do.

My 6.4 gets 21 mpg all day long around town and 25 to 26 mpg on the highway. Now i also have a 2020 Ram pickup with a 6.4 L engine but unfortunately it doesn't get as good gas mileage and i also only run regular gas in that also. Now there another guy in my area that has a 6.4 L Challenger and he says his Challenger doesn't get very good gas mileage, at least that what he says. I would like to know what kind of mileage other people are getting with there 6.4 ?.

    Computer adjust for the lower octane, you will just have little less power 😮 older cars with no computer will knock

    I had a rdx I didn’t kno it needed premium at first but when I found out it needed premium and I started running it. I could definitely tell the difference in the power it was making in the way it responded. I’m driving Benz now a GL 63 and I refuse to put anything less than premium. I got the truck for power so I want the power.😂

    This why I said most these people be imposters.
    If they were to actually know the build of their car instead of just buying it, then they would know that the few dollars he saving in gas, is gonna equal thousands when he has to repair his engine.
    Certain gases are recommended because of combustion ratios.
    If your car don’t need premium do not put premium, your wasting your money.
    If your car needs premium use premium.
    My last Mercedes took premium as most of them do, yes there were some people who only did regular and had no issue, there were others who got the knock and came out of pocket thousands in repairs. It’s not like putting diesel in your tank, in most cases it’s not gonna be a automatic failure, but doesn’t mean that it can start knocking at anytime.
    Why take the chance.

    What happens is the ECM/ECU recalibrates the timing for the lower octane. My 2018 Mustang GT, My twin turbo BMW does it, most modern cars are capable of doing so. Do you all remember when they had gas shortage when you could only get 87? My cars ran and didn’t knock but this what happened: the gas burned out almost twice as fast and power was bit less. I believe if Ripper check compares zero to sixty times he will see a difference between premium and regular.

    • @georgepetrillo7316

      Your definetly right, To add a little food for thought; the higher octane burns at a slower rate than the lower octane fuels. Yes, the premium takes longer to consume; that's why it makes car owners think that the premium fuel lasts longer and yields better fuel economy.

    I put regular on my scat until like 8k miles when it was a lease, after purchasing I started using premium, i never felt any difference in power or engine knocking , at the end of the day it’s only like $4 or $5 more than regular and i think its worth it

    Well he might be fine running on that straight pump gas for now but he will lose HP and he may not get as good of gas mileage. But one thing is for sure he will have to have injectors changed out sooner than anyone else would who runs non ethanol. But if you are a person who doesn’t plan to keep the car long term and you don’t race it then why would you care if you gum up the works. Probably going to trade it in or sell it out right in another year or so.
