    Yes, the difference is incredible in solid hook ups. To this day I still have to fight it cause I do a LOT of trout fishing. I see guys strip in the salt but go back to trout set on bass. Great tip Alvin!

      So true when I’m messing around with bluegill and poppers I’ll some times do a trout set and sling those things right out of the water on to the bank probably because of using a 8W rod versus 3wt rod. Totally the opposite of missing a set, more like slinging a tuna. I’m definitely going to try a strip set. It sounds like you will also have a better connection with the strike oh and use a lighter rod when messing around with bluegill. 😁

    I've heard this dozens of times, and this may be the first time with a good explanation of why. Thanks!

    so i love to wade fish the Sabine river between texas and louisiana. i have found that a strip hook set on smaller bass (8-11 inches) doesnt work as well. but i found myself lifting the rod tip and strip setting. a combo of 50% of each but man i have had a ton of luck with that. that and my green and black dedeaux poppers. God bless

    Guilty, Been fishing for years and always lift the rod. I know about the strip set, but never used it much. Looks like it's time to practice up. Good video.

    Great tip Alvin. I also use 2 handed retrieve whenever I can, always in position to strike, and no way to yank the rod up when not holding it. Takes some getting used to but I’ve had good success with it..usually using one of Your flies. Works great for your popper also. Have a great week amigo. 👍👍👌🎣

    I went after redfish in south Texas last year and my guide said I get one trout set for free! After that I better have the strip set sorted out-- happy to say I landed some nice reds on spawning shrimp patterns. 🤙

    I still find myself doing this sometimes but my short bass mojo rod helps me get away with it somewhat

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing

      I bet the shorter stiffer rod is an advantage. Never thought about that.

    Strip striking requires discipline, especially on a big topwater strike.

    You have to strip strike with many species including carp. It's hard to remember sometimes!

    Rookie question, but how much drag do set set on your fly reel? Or do you do it the same as if you was using a bait caster?

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  3 месяца назад

      I usually just set it tight enough to not backlash when you give the line a good tug. You can always tighten it up while fighting a fish or just add some tension with the palm of your hand.

    I just bought an 8 weight fly rod. Can I use my 5 weight line until I am able to upgrade my fly line.

    • @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing
      @AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing  Месяц назад +1

      It's going to be really hard to load the rod, but it won't hurt anything.

      @@AlvinDedeauxFlyFishing I just bought a floating line in eight weight. The pond is small. The deepest part is ten feet deep. Lots of one to five feet. That’s where the bass seem to be. I figure I can use a weighted fly to go deep. Is my thinking right?
