I finally visited Lalibela towards the end of 2019. It was absolutely breathtaking and an experience that will remain with me forever. The mountainous landscape of Lalibela is also a natural spiritual wonder of its own. It is a very special place, and one day I hope to return and visit the ancient city of Aksum too. Lalibela is a small town in the Amhara region of northern Ethiopia. You have to take a short internal flight from Addis Ababa to get there. There are 11 awe-inspiring rock hewn churches dug out and carved from the mountains which are equally magnificent and majestic inside and out. I experienced a profound sense of peace as my guide showed me around and taught me the history of each structure. My guide also took me to the 11th century cave church Yemrahana Kristos, which is another extraordinary feat of architecture and engineering. It is a 40 minute drive out from the other churches and is constructed at the very top of a mountain but with it's foundations built on wooden platforms floating on top of a river. It was quite a challenging trek to get to the top, but it was completely worth it. Ethiopia is a real jewel of Africa and when this pandemic has passed I will definitely go back as a matter of priority. The people are so gracious and naturally regal, the food is amazing, and both the rustic traditional music and ethiopian jazz are out of this world.

Enlightening stuff, as ever. It is interesting, however, the propensity at which when attempting to amplify Africa, many - including here - champion, and-or highlight, practices and traditions that they purport to find odious in other instances: the numerous kingdoms, civilisations, and the abstracting intellectual traditions that they bared.
