- Back in 8th grade, my family was selected to be on the FOX reality series Trading Spouses. We sent in a small video clip of our family with NO real intentions of being selected. Who would have thought...
Marybeth might be my favorite mother from the whole show. She is so supportive and sweet at least from what they showed us.

I just wanna hug her. I hope she knows that she is frickin adorable and such a sweetheart and it could have been any person, and they’d of still acted that way. All distant n too kool for skool n what not :((((

I think we ALL would have LOVED to skate with Mary Beth. Those children were rude, disrespectful, and didn’t even TRY to make her feel welcome.
I can't skate worth crap on rollerblades but I would fall on my fat butt in public for her or if it was allowed strap on a pair of regular roller skates
I think if you all were raised with someone like Janet you would understand why those kids are so distant, it’s not that they don’t like Mary it’s just that there use to dealing with Janet loud overbearing presence, she doesn’t really talk to her kids so they pick up on that and naturally shut down it’s obvious Janet kids feel as though they can’t talk to her, Mary actually talks to them and make them feel like they matter, they would change over time if Marybeth was there
I literally was so sad watching that.
Although Marybeth may not particularly like tatts and piercings, she understands that encouragement opens up and motivates a child to follow their dreams and want to do well. I hope they really did keep in touch!
Plus if piercing and tattoos keeps that guy away from drugs, then I fully support it. I have no issues with it anyway, I have 4 tattoos and some piercings too.

This episode of Trading Spouses has really stayed with me over the years. Janet is just an awful, awful person. The way she treats Brian turns my stomach. That guy is so talented and unhappy. Janet is way too judgmental and she repeatedly hurt his feelings. She was the same way with all of her other kids, too. She is narcissistic enough to think that everyone around her loves and adores her but that is not the case at all. She's rude and too self involved to notice what's happening around her. Mary Beth is incredible. Just incredible. Her heart is big and open and she genuinely cares about people. I hope that everyone is doing okay ... but Janet can stay on her own planet for all I care. She is NOT a good person.
+Chelle Daniel I definitely agree with you. I had a mom similar to her in many ways. (Mainly the way she always puts down her kids hopes and dreams and always thinks that she knows best!) It made me cry to see the look on Brian's face when he got positive input from a mother for the first time in his life! It was amazing to see how the whole family was SO shut down emotionally all scared to share anything bc of the continual bullying they got from their mother. This also showed how much what you tell your kids effects them, though happily you can turn things around with just a few kind words of encouragement!

I wanted too agree with you, and I'm aware this is old, but purely I believe this woman does not like herself and that she honestly feels that she is entertaining with her obnoxious behavior. I really hope she has gotten a better grasp on things, because I have hope, as well as her children are not bad children (that I could tell from a tv show) so she's got some things right. And wether they would admit it or not... they love her. I for one do vote for MaryBeth. I love her positivity and kindred spirit. I know people like Janet and they all deserve love.

Unfortunately Mary Beth had a no win situation. That family is so divided and individualized it would take much longer than 2 weeks to get this family to communicate at any reasonably healthy level. The 50K should be spent 10K for a divorce attorney and 40K for the kids to get therapy.

I don't cry at anything, but that part where Marybeth looked inside Brian's room, just made me tear up and smile. I know these scenes can be set up sometimes, but that was just a beautiful moment.

It's all about her, and anything those kids do or say gets them yelled and screamed at, ridiculed, and shamed!!

Janet sucked the life out of them.
Janet could make a fortune renting herself out to fill in as a mother's replacement for a week. It would be a guaranteed way for mother's to be appreciated and adored by their children and husband's after having to experience Janet. Her ad could read something like "If your family thinks they have it rough, once they have to endure my lazy, negative, critical, mean spirited and loud mouthed self, they will appreciate you like you never thought possible!".

I just have to add that at the end of this episode, you can totally see how wonderful the Levy family is by how the older biological children stayed back while the adopted children rushed to their mother. It showed such unintentional compassion that they allowed their siblings who needed that motherly reassurance more than most to embrace her first & feel that relief that their mom was home & with them. I'm over her crying, watching this episode for the millionth time because I've gleaned so much from watching this tremendous family not take anything for granted & simply be wonderful people.
That's so perceptive-- what you said about the biological children letting the adoptive children greet their mother first. Totally missed that, and glad you pointed it out.
They were older, they let the younger ones go first, that’s it, not because they’re adopted…because they’re younger!!

The dog even turned away when she returned! I wonder if she will ever admit the truth to herself about how her children might love her but do not like her. I can't imagine how I would feel if I returned home to such a lack of caring. I would have to seriously reflect absolutely everything about myself and figure out what the heck I needed to change!

Wannabe freaks. Glad they have found a way to entertain themselves. That woman called them "Professionals"? He said most of his equipment was made by himself? Yeah I'm sure this equipment is the product of a thousand years of ghost hunting spirit world professionals can create in their garage! Alert NASA and area 51 about these professionals and their discoveries.
Exactly, it is a hallway...pacing back and forth is sort of what it is used for.
Marybeth is not just an amazing mother but person, so selfless, caring and loving her children are all so lucky to have her.
It kind of makes me sad that Janet is so out of touch with reality. She was actually upset that she had to share the money with her KIDS? Really?! Wow.
I do feel a lot of pity for Janet, for sure. She thinks she's supportive of her son's art when she (very vocally) LOATHES his medium. She's jealous and upset that they thought Marybeth was wonderful when Marybeth woke up, took care of them, and spent every waking second trying to show an interest in the family - even when they weren't ready to be receptive. Janet is lazy and doesn't see the value in something as simple and easy as making a batch of muffins, ffs. I learned how to make muffins in 5th grade. It's really not that complicated.
She just doesn't understand... she doesn't even have to mimic Marybeth for her family to appreciate her. She just has to do SOMETHING worth appreciating. You get what you give... and if Janet wants that same kind of affection and adoration, well, she's got to find her own way of showing her family she loves them instead of just being critical and laying in bed all day.
I think all parents should strive to learn something from MaryBeth - you may not understand your kids passions but you should always support them and just give them unconditional love. The Farrell teens seemed like nice people, they had just been so overwhelmed and a little emotionally stunted by their mums loud and unpredictable nature.
The Levy family were so wonderful, such a fun and compassionate family. I think they handled the whole thing really well, especially considering that Janet came in and was so nasty to their friends.
Sooooo IS nobody gonna talk about how Brian bought such a lovely and meaningful gift for Mary Beth?? I literally started getting teary eyed when I saw that the man got a big and soft heart.
I don't blame that dude for not being excited when his mom got home. She is not very respectful or supportive of him.
Yes, Brian did become a tattoo artist and body piercer. We are all happy and doing well. Also love our mother, and the show did a great job with editing. Glad we were entertaining.

I legit cried when Brian gave Marybeth the present 🎁😭 she showed him so much genuine kindness! Tattoos are not looked down upon anymore- I am an artist and have thought about working in that industry as well. As a mom, one of the most important things you can do for your children is support their passion!

Mary Beth seems to be mother of the year in my book! She is so lovely and caring. What awesome parents they are. I had to laugh when the 'ghost hunter' told Janet she should pretty much be leaving the house. I feel so sorry for Brian and his family, Janet is a very blind lady. I hope Brian gets to make his dreams come true!
The good thing for Janets kids.... they are so close to being old enough to MOVE OUT!!! Her son is an incredible artist and for her not to support him is just shameful

I can't believe how depressing and repressed janets kids are...they are so put down that even when someone positive tries to interact with them, they are incapable of having fun or even speaking. Janet is a horrible person who should have never had children. I came from a broken home and I have still never seen such a beaten down group of kids. I have never seen a bunch of siblings so sucked dry of any sign of vitality, life, vibrancy, it's like they have exactly no idea how to even speak to each other, or to show affection from what I have seen and remember from the episode, it's just so dulled out, and the reason is because of Janet that I agree on, because I can't help but think of Janet was different, more loving, understanding, encouraging, more involved in a positive in a way it could've been different

i just think the kids have been so emotionally abused and neglected by that narcissistic mom janet, so when they speak their minds they're used to negative feedback. when you grow up with someone like that every day it'd be hard to have confidence and think it's safe to talk about their personal feelings since usually it doesn't mean a thing to their mom. This is the perfect example of how your children turn out when you have an active mother verses a non-active mother. Mother's are the glue to the household. Parents (BOTH) be active in your children's lives, daily !!!!

Mary Beth, is an amazing woman, she is kind, compassionate, and such a warm loving person. There is no more perfect people to be adoptive parents than the Levy parents. I want to hug them both! They are just amazing!
this has to be one of the most saddest episodes i have ever seen in regards to that horrible janet. i feel so sad for those children of hers. they were soooo not happy to have her home. so very sad. i wish those kids well and hope they are doing ok.

Mary Beth seemed to be just an incredible and loving person and a very caring Mother. This world could sure use more role models such as she is. I actually feel sorry for Janet because in the end all the terrible hateful things she says and does will come back and bite her eventually. She must be a very unhappy person. He deserves much better but to stand by AND let his wife abuse their children like she does!:(Janet DID NOT learning a thing! Psychologically speaking,Janet was probably picked on a child and thus led to her becoming a narcissist. When Mary Beth said how great an artist Brian was,Janet immediately rejected the idea,all praise and attention has to go to Janet constantly for her to survive emotionally.

Mary is possibly one of the sweetest people they've ever had on this show. She's so amazing. When she actually offered to let Brian stay at her home to check out the scene where she lives, I was just amazed.
She's living with this household of people who act like they want nothing to do with her and all she does is respond with love. Offering what is essentially a stranger into her home, just amazing.

Mary Beth is an absolutely wonderful, hard working, people oriented, family oriented woman who obviously loves her family and is a dedicated mother and wife. I love the fact that she is fun loving and cares for others, and is open to possibilities. The first few minutes of part two irked me. She wanted to go to the family fun center to connect with them and hopefully get them to loosen up, epic fail. Have Janet's family ever had fun as a family before?! Her feelings were hurt because it seems like all that she's doing isn't getting through. I'm surprised she got through to Brian. At the beginning of the episode it was mentioned that Brian was a bit of a trouble maker. It may have been because of the fact that his mother criticized everything that he did/does. Maybe he felt the only way he could express himself and get out his true feelings was to act out. He's very talented and when I saw his art work, I felt something deep in my soul. I hope he keeps it going and makes a living out of it.
For Janet to say that the Levy kids simply adored her made me see red for a moment. Brian was not excited to see his mother at all. He was not thrilled when Mary Beth left. When the younger son said he was not excited to see his mom it make me smirk. How rotten is Janet to the point were she'd rather have all that money to herself because she feels she deserves to "treat" herself. It seems to me that she treats herself enough. She is BEYOND selfish. To make it worse she's perhaps ticked off about sharing the money with her kids and now she's taking it out on her family. Her kids aren't happy and neither is her husband. I can tell that he just tolerates her. It looked like at the end Brian was was packing his bags and leaving. I don't blame him, but now the others have to suffer. At lease Janet was thoughtful of the Levy family's money.
From my amateur knowledge i would easily diagnose Janet with Narcissistic Personality Disorder maybe even comorbidty of paranoid personality (that whole ghost thing was ridiculous). A parent who is affected by narcissism i think is really common and anyone who sees their mom or dad in Janet should seek info online about it. I Seriously feel bad for her children. That being said I would love to know MaryBeth's life story and take on life and parenting. What a special lady!
I'd say the ghost thing was for her to get more attention rather than an actual belief. She was losing their attention so she made up some ridiculous thing for them to be forced to pay attention to her.
Or maybe the show producers made it up to get more action in there. Everything she did on the show definitely points to NPD.

I would kill to have had a mother like yours. Janet was a cold, narcissistic and obnoxious. I have never seen kids so happy for their mother to be gone. The way her kids treated your mom was horrible, but I can understand why they did it. I'd be quiet and walking on eggshells all the time too if I grew up in that house. I teared up when your mom went with brian to the tattoo shop. What she did for him was amazing and what a real mother would do. You guys got the short end of the stick with Janet for a week, but I bet she helped you appreciate your mom even more. Lucky bunch of kids you all are.
too many excuses for the teens own terrible behaviour, come on, they were old enough to know right from wrong, just too self-centred and nasty to realise they had a gem in their house

I loved when Marybeth went too see his work. She was so understanding and saw he truly is talented.
I didn't feel bad when maribeth didn't give Janets youngest son access to spend his money without his parents agreement. He should have opened up to her a bit, she tried so har to get to know those kids. Im sure they all appreciated her love and selflessness when she was gone.
I would like to see an update on both these families. I did not like Janet very much. And I do not think her own family likes her too much either...
Emma your families episode has always been one of my favorites of all time! Your mom is just amazing and is what every mother should aspire to be....especially with her concept of "I don't have to like what my kids doing but I should at least be encouraging and nurturing", that's how my mom was and how I would have been if I could have had children.

Also I feel so bad for Mary, my gosh. That woman put in a lot of effort & they were just not willing to give her the time of day. Just wanna put it out there I don't think Brian is the only one of Janets kids that has or does use drugs. The skinny daughter looks like she uses.
That part between Mary & brian, don't think Brian has ever heard a nice thing about what he's into from his parents. Mary Beth leaving has me almost crying, Janets family is so quiet because she makes herself the center of attention. Janet didn't even think her kids earned any money.
