I saw a crackhead and a Vietnam vet with a prosthetic leg get in a fight at 2am at Waffle House around 2003 or 2004. Wound up with the whole staff grabbing their weapons of choice when the crackhead somehow wound up behind the counter. A bit of a fight happened and then the linebacker looking cook literally picked him up and threw him out of the diner, then started to follow him out. His manager yelled “throw me the apron” at the same time big guy yelled “I quit”. He whooped crackhead’s ass in the parking lot, then came back in and said “can I have my job back?” Manager lady just handed him the apron and they started cleaning up. It was beautiful. I will always go to Waffle House for the free entertainment alone.

I once met a cook from South Carolina to correct the cooking of grits at the local Waffle House I was eating at. That's how seriously corporate takes employee training.
I was once served a trespass notice to remove myself from a Waffle House because a new waitress knew me and didn't want me there. No other reason, no outside issues. The cook continued to cook my meal that I had already paid for to go, since I had ordered it before that waitress arrived; but since she walked in, saw me, maced me, and went out and stabbed my tires, he called the cops. Even the cops don't disrespect Waffle House; her reason was, "His friend dumped me because _he_ said I was 'mentally unstable!'" No charges on her, I had to walk home, but I took my meal with me! Hard "No, fuck you, no," to not getting the food I paid for, officer!
She totaled that car, once I and the cop were both gone. Waffle House fired her and paid for repairs at their own request.

You didn't mention WHY they stay open! Story time: I worked at an airport here in SW Florida for years. After Hurricane Irma, 7 private jets showed up. 2 of them were full of executives and restaurant staff, the other 5 were full of water and supplies. Those jets flew in and out constantly for a week getting people and supplies in. I asked a guy (turned out to be a VP) why. He said so that the heros putting our town back together, firefighters, police, Linemen, DOT workers, all have a place to get some coffee and a hot meal." They don't do it for the money, they do it for the guys putting us back together. As much fuel as we put in those jets, they had to be losing money hand over fist. But they did it for principal and for community! Since that conversation, I've had a huge amount of respect for Waffle House.

Other little notes. I used to manage store 426 and was later a District Manager for Waffle House. Most Waffle House managers don’t have a key to the front doors. I had a sales associate that worked for me that had 250’000 dollars worth of WH stock. WH is a business cases study at Harvard. WH policy is all bills are to be paid in 24 hours, errors would be sorted out after payment was made. So vendors love the WH. Employees are paid in cash and with it receive their payroll stub. Christmas Day planning starts four weeks before Christmas. Working there is not an easy job, but the WH is amazing and was a wonderful experience. You will learn that please and thank you are the two most powerful things that you can say.

Stewart, GA my buddy and I rolled in to the Hinesville WH at some unknown hour of darkness having somehow made it back that far from Savanah. We struggled through staying awake to finish our food only for me to not be able to find my keys. A few hours later or so, I found them sitting on the edge of the table... holding the check down asking with fresh hot coffees. I don't remember her name, but I can tell you what she looked like. A living stereotype. A big happy Deep-South, always cheerful Black lady that you couldn't really put an age to but you knew she was everything, Grandma, Mama, Auntie - whatever. She was always working late night (or early morning I guess) and called everybody "baby" & "sugar". To this day I swear she slipped my keys away and just kept us busy until we passed out for a bit & sobered up.

I have had close friends that found themselves down on their luck and living out of their vehicle. The folks at waffle house were the only people who didn't judge. Treated them like human beings instead of trash. Like the rest of us treat the homeless. They not only gave support by feeding my friend. Even allowing them to sit at a booth on the coldest of nights. But they trained and hired my friend as an employee. Giving them the opportunity that no one else was willing to give. That was the launching board for turning their life around. So that they now have a home and a one yrld healthy baby boy. Waffle house basically saved my friends life. Helped them achieve a life worth living they are now proud of. Instead of likely dying cold on the streets from loneliness and hopelessness. Waffle House forever has my respect.

as much as people like to talk about how much this is all for the community and so on, I fucking guarantee you that Waffle Houses make bank from disasters. Either A : because they're literally the only place selling food for potentially weeks on end or B : because of the sheer good-will and habit-forming from people doing nothing but eating at Waffle House for weeks on end.
Pulling through when no-one else is is actually a great way to stay profitable. Steam and MySpace started the same year, one is an "unchallengable natural monopoly" and the other is Steam. It doesn't matter how strong you or anyone else thinks your position is, your business lives and dies by your customers.

The secret sauce behind Waffle House's "chaotic-good" vibes is its private ownership. They don’t have to deal with stockholders whining about quarterly profits or some overly polished board of directors debating whether syrup counts as a health hazard. Instead, Waffle House answers only to its true master: late-night hunger.
This is why their employees get treated like humans rather than just “cost centers.” They can focus on flipping hash browns and keeping the jukebox alive instead of cutting corners to fund another yacht for some hedge fund guy. Waffle House thrives in its own lawless ecosystem, where the menu is sacred, the coffee is bottomless, and employee loyalty is as strong as their coffee stains.

I'm only awarding half credit. The issue isn't stockholders, it's the government-controlled monopoly of the stock market.
The issue with stocks is that they are *_always_* liquid, meaning you have no reason to prioritize long-term sustainability as a stockholder. (Including but not limited to, having good employee relations) The issue is that since the government thinks it owns everything the light touches and regulated the market into stagnation, there isn't any competing system that'd fix that problem. (For instance by applying some of the behaviours of bonds to stocks and letting companies mint stocks that "Mature" at different rates) If such a thing existed then you would see massive quantities of mid-long term investments that favour a business being well off *_decades_* into the future, rather than *_days_* into the future.
Such a system would mean more Steam, and less MySpace. (Which started the same year fyi.)

The worked once at the location I was trained at, which was a different one from the one I normally worked at, had one of the servers vanish for two hours without telling anyone right before the bar rush happened during 3rd shift, probably so she could go smoke weed or some shit. Also, I don't know why he's acting like there isn't another side to that menu, They serve dinner, like t bone steaks and stuff The chicken hashbrown bowl, no onions, lots of waffle house sauce was my go to, though the owners were super picky about workers not being home any food, though at least all meals while there were free, if you could find 5 seconds during your shift to sit down and actually eat. Also, they will threaten you to show up to work, like, if you work Christmas day, they will tell you that if you don't show up, you will be fired, and I can easily see that being said to employees during natural disasters.

I saw my favorite kpop group (Stray Kids) in Atlanta in March 2023. During the concert when they were interacting with the audience, they asked where they should eat. The enter venue, which was one of the biggest in Atlanta that wasn't a stadium, unanimously answered "Waffle House". The group was so confused but found it funny. People flamed the answer online, wondering why on earth people would say that due to its reputation. But every single person from the south just...got it. If you want something that's just so...southern? Waffle house.

Working in Georgia in a fairly small town there were 6 directions to head in when leaving the hotel. There was a Waffle House on everyone of those roads, the furthest was about ten minutes away and the closest was across the street. While checking out new restaurants can be fun, when you been working umpteen hours straight on 4 hours sleep the last thing you want is fun, I just didn’t have the energy to be entertained. I liked the fact that while the patrons could be unpredictable, the menu and service wasn’t, you knew exactly what you were in for, a solid affordable meal and off to the hotel for another 4-5 hours of work induced coma. Thank you for giving some unsung heroes their due and thank you Waffle House for being there.

Currently I work at Wendy's and stock and clean a bar, but on the app at Wendy's i answered "can answer upon interview" because it's a pretty long list of convictions. When I told the manager everything, she just asked me if I plan to rob the register. I said I didn't plan on it. I started 2 days later and have been there 4 years thru 3 different GMs. My point is, the older ppl in fast food are almost always more reliable and harder workers and generally they understand that those older workers have a questionable past.

ive met the founders Joe and Tom before while i was a server at a different type of restaurant in the Atlanta area. genuinely one of the nicest folks ive had the pleasure to serve. i had no idea who they were, just nice old guys who liked to have a good laugh. later on my manager told me who they were and i was surprised. their entire families from the kids down to the grandkids are all amazing.

I worked at a legally distinct restaurant in Australia for the better part of a decade that was looking to copy the business model of waffle house, but they completely screwed up the "keep it small, stupid" part. We were seating up to 400 customers at once, on busy days there were always so many angry pissed off customers complaining it took half an hour to get their food not realising my team and I literally could not get orders out faster, we were maxing out every cooking surface and pan we had to try and meet the demand, it literally could not be done.

"Syrup flavored syrup..." That's all I needed to know. Being southern born and southern bred, waffle house is the ONLY breakfast spot. If a fight just happens to break out, well you'll have entertainment to go with your meal.

In 2005 after Katrina I volunteered with the Red Cross to go into New Orleans and help out. We lived off MRE's and Waffle House for 2 months. The Waffle House right by the motel we were in was open a day or two after we got there. The McDonald's across the street did not open until the last week I was there.

We have 11 in our county alone growing up on the WH way before Cracker Barrel’s shown up. Pre-Covid WH was in 4th gear at 160mph in there NASCAR on the business HWY them COVID happen and the wheels almost fell off the car.. it was an double wide trash bin Inferno going on… very bad is an understatement for sure .. then something happened in 2024 , people started to return .. menu pricing changed it was so different then in 2021, 2022, 2023.. So glad they got some new tires and crew working now.

True story. I flew in to Boynton beach FL to do a job. After my flight landed, i went to the local grocery store to buy me some beer and snacks. While i was at the store i was getting a really weird vibe. So when i got to the checkout i asked the cashier "is something going on?" She looked at me like i had three heads and said "there's a hurricane on the way."
Got to my hotel and checked the weather, and sure enough there was a hurricane scheduled to hit the next day. Why my job flew me into the teeth of a hurricane i'll never know. So i called the jobsite, and my POC told me "why are you even here, evacuate!" Could not book a flight out, no seats left.
So i had to iron man it out in a rental car. Sucked so bad, because traffic was insane. But i did make it.

WH always impresses me that they do all their dishes in a tiny little sink hidden under the counter you're sitting at. And they clean the grill with a LITERAL BRICK and the thick, dark grease from the grease trap. First time I saw that part of my brain broke trying to figure out if that's even hygienic, but then I realized my hashbrowns were getting cold.

I have walked 3+ miles to my closest Waffle House in the aftermath of a snowstorm when power was out and the roads were undrivable (at least for Southerners without tire chains). And there was a hot meal waiting at the end of my hike. Waffle House is awesome. I did envy my neighbors with 4x4's that day ... they made the same trip, ate their meal, and were probably back at home before I completed my outbound leg. And yes, there are two Waffle Houses within sight of each other at that location -- one on either side of the Interstate.

The last time I went to Waffle House it was in the middle of a blizzard after a twenty two hour day of work replacing automatic carwash equipment in the freezing cold with no breaks. I ordered so much food that the waitress brought it to my table piled high on two serving platters instead of plates, and I ended up eating it all and had to set my car's seat back a couple notches after getting in, drove home groaning in pain the whole time, and then passed out on my couch for three days in a food/exhaustion coma. When I finally woke up, I realized my car was parked sideways in the yard with the driver's side facing the front door. I'm pretty sure I left a hundred dollar tip.

They were the first place open to the public/military after Hurricane Katrina at their D'Iberville, MS location. The manager refused our money, so we gave our money to our servers. They were absolutely amazing, even though WH had lost their location on Biloxi Beach. The sign survived, though. Epic place. Don't get me started on their waffles and hash browns, or the best cup of coffee.

I work for a disaster response company. The most consistent thing when being deployed is that if you're going to the south, Waffle House will be open somewhere near you. Hurricane Beryl in Houston- they were open when the eye passed over.
When the EF-4 hit Clarksville, they helped feed responders & shelter residents.

I'm from Alabama. We have 3 in our small town. An employee told us that if weather is expected to be snowy or icy, real disaster in Alabama, they are put up in the local hotel. They told us that each house is placed next to a hotel with that in mind.
