Where did May go?? Can't believe its already June guys! Happy pride month to everyone, we kind of wish we had a more colorful vehicle to upload today but the RAV4 Hybrid has been one of the most requested videos this year so we hope you enjoy! We call this the most gas efficient SUV in America because at 40 MPG combined, nothing else that uses petrol really matches it at the moment. The upcoming 2020 Escape Hybrid should be close, but at the moment, this is the best and even outdoes the diesel offerings from GM and Mazda. Props to Toyota for such impressive numbers on the RAV4 Hybrid, it is definitely much improved over the non-hybrid and the previous generation!

41.8 mpg driving 80 mph on the interstate is pretty darn amazing for an AWD SUV.

Test drove both the gas and hybrid version and it really is a no brainer. The hybrid accelerates quicker and has less road noise.
The gas 8 speed transmission is constantly shifting and in eco it is pronounced from gear to gear. Not a pleasant ride and at freeway speeds in the gas version you may as well turn off the radio.
I will not be surprised if the hybrid out sells the gas
Picked up the hybrid XLE with the convenience package in white.
    $30,707 out-the-door.
Summer sales are slow so salespersons will deal and Toyota is offering a $1,250 rebate if you finance through Toyota Financial Services. If you have excellent credit you can get 3.9 % for 60 months and 4.4% for 72 months.
If your credit is average you may want to refinance after you receive your first bill at a credit union because average credit using Toyota Financial Services will be 5.25% or higher.

When it comes to fog lights, they’re not there to increase lighting. They’re there to cut through fog. For that, the yellower the light, the better, and the more diffused the light, the better, so LEDs are fine, but only if they’re yellow and diffused. Otherwise you’re better off with the incandescent bulbs.
Also, a correction on the engine: the 2.5 comes with direct and port injection. It’s an important caveat because this type of engine is rare and eliminates the carbon build-up issues that all direct injection engines have.
Finally, a correction on the transmission: It does not have a CVT transmission. It has what’s called an eCVT transmission. Those are entirely different than your regular CVTs. They don’t have comes and pulleys and belts/chains. They work with planetary gears. Very reliable.
Also, the CX5 Turbo has been clocked with a slightly (less than 1 second difference) slower 0-60mph than this Rav4 Hybrid.

    • @drbatteries
      @drbatteries 5 лет назад

I think you mean slightly lower (not slower) both Alex on Autos and Car and Driver puts the CX5 Turbo at 6.2 seconds. I've driven both, and the CX5 turbo pulls a LOT harder probably due to having 300 lb feet of torque.

Yes, the engine noise under acceleration is bland. Essentially, the engine chooses one RPM and holds it. But for good reason. Max acceleration is best accomplished at peak horsepower. That is one of the best qualities of a CVT. Put the engine at peak horsepower, then continually vary the gear ratio. I have a 2012 Camry Hybrid and love it. On 2 lane roads, I rarely pull in from passing someone doing less than 80 mph. The new Rav4 Hybrid is definitely on my radar for my next vehicle.

I was eyeing the 2020 Outback with the turbo engine, but have concerns about the reliability... and the MPG isn't great on those either. The Hybrid Rav4 seems to be the best compromise on the market today; good enough acceleration and AMAZING fuel efficiency for a compact SUV.

Low band rumble to me is much less objectionable than higher frequencies at the same SPL level. White noise is easier on ears than sounds focused in a specific frequency range. I think this is why, despite the ubiquity of low cost SPL meters, few reviewers offer the data. Its just too subjective. You can get a simple app for your mobile device to take your own readings for comparisons sake. Maybe someone will figure out a standard thats meaningful.

Funny, we were looking at trading in the Lexus RX350h for their UX250h model (cutting costs but keeping quality) and we end up liking the looks + interior size + price + mileage and acceleration of their RAV4 Hybrid much more!
it just makes that much more sense and who cares about the badge when the company (+quality) is the same? Sure, some of the trim may not be "on par"; but, that's not too apparent, overall. And even the fully stoked "Limited" edition is cheaper than the equivalent Lexus UX250h.
Toyota was right to bolster the RAV model to keep up with competition, but they may have cannibalized some of it's Lexus siblings in the process (and I'm okay with that!!)
I liked how you got right to the point on everything and spoke quickly and concisely through the other vehicle comparisons you've experienced.
Thanks for making our choice that much easier - excellent review, Sofyan!
    Cheers!
    Rob
[small observation: correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you had it set to Sport mode, when you were doing all your acceleration testing on the highway... I believe it may have been a bit better than you experienced - I saw a "blue" dash, not "red"]

Why on earth would they NOT have a powered passenger seat. And NO HUD? Paying that much seems like a crime without features that are getting to be standard.

Great review as always. Just one comment about the noise when you floor it....I drive hybrid for about a year and most of the time I don’t have to floor it. You have to learn how to drive a hybrid and ecvt. Besides any car you floor will make a loud noise but hybrid most of the time is super quiet and that is beautiful:)

Looks nice but I keep thinking how this whole segment has gotten absurdly expensive. To spec out the higher trim Rav you’re talking over 40k without breaking a sweat. That’s Lexus ES, NX, or IS money, or an Acura RDX. Honestly if you don’t need awd then I think it’s better to have a decent sedan with winter tires and save some cash.

If you are looking for value for money, the Prius Prime currently has a $3k cashback, plus the tax credits... you'll be paying only $19k (after state and federal tax credits) for a very nice new car with incredible MPG. I'd buy one, but I actually use AWD on backroads and do a lot of driving in heavy snow... so prius low ground clearance is an issue. I've got my eye on this hybrid RAV4. 40 mpg for an SUV is awesome.

I just leased an XSE with 15,000 miles a year for a 36 month lease. I kept everything the XSE comes with but got rid of the panoramic sunroof and downgraded to moonroof also got rid of the 11 speaker system and downgraded to 6 speakers and the total cost of the vehicle dropped down to 35,600. Just with the sunroof and the 11 speakers the cost went all the way up to 39k. I can live without those 2 options for a whole lot less...

Freeway noise surprised me on the 19 rav4, my 15 Tundra is super quiet. Guessing its the extra door seals on the tundras. Not bad though just crank up the radio.
